Call for volunteers to help out with our Junior Instruction Program

Hello Everyone,

This note is to let you know the Junior Instruction Program is off to a great start.  The young curlers are enjoying their learning about the great sport of curling and are quickly catching on to the importance of safety, while having tons of fun.

While that is great news there is one need that isn’t being met just yet and that is the need for help on ice.   The program is being supported by some great on ice helpers now but there is a need for more , especially on Tuesdays between 4 – 5 o’clock.  The program is growing, and while that is really great, it is important that we provide the best learning experience we can.

The Little Rocks, ages 6 – 9 or so, are on ice on Sunday from 3:30 – 4:15 and the Novice between the ages of 9 – 12 are on the ice on Sunday 4:30 – 5:30 and on Tuesday 5 – 6 o’clock.  There’s about 15 instruction weeks left, depending on the weather and unforeseen schedule changes.

Individual junior curlers and teams have volunteered to work with the young curlers in the past and have received Community Service Bursaries at the rate of $5.00 an hour.  Here is the website where you can get more information on that benefit:  https://www.princeedwardisland.ca/en/information/workforce-and-advanced-learning/community-service-bursary

If you are available to help with the young curlers, please contact me using the information below.

Have a great year of curling!

Currie rink edges Berry team on overall game points to win Murphy’s Ice Queens Funspiel

Murphy’s Ice Queens Funspiel was held November 17th & 18th, with 10 teams participating. We had two guest players, and the rest of the teams were from our own club.

A round-robin style schedule was used with each team playing 3 six-end games over the weekend. This lead up to an exciting finish with a tie in points between the Currie and the Berry teams. The tie was broken with a count of overall game points scored in all three games, leading to the 1st place victory for the Currie team consisting of Karen Currie, Marg Stewart, Pat McCardle and Jean Anderson. These ladies were presented with our Murphy’s Ice Queens Trophy and gift cards from our sponsor Murphy’s Pharmacies.

(L-R): Jean Anderson, Pat McCardle, Marg Stewart, Karen Currie

Second place gift cards were awarded to the Berry team consisting of Shirley Berry, Linda Fairhurst, Marjorie Matthews and Marlene Proude.

(L-R) Shirley Berry, Linda Fairhurst, Marlene Proude, Marjorie Matthews

The funspiel showed its true colors by awarding the lucky number 7th place team gift cards too. Recipients of this award went to Janette Fraser, Carolyn Crockett, Bernie Field and Ann Greyborn. This was a fun twist, showing that it’s not always about winning!

(L-R) Ann Greyborn, Janette Fraser, Carolyn Crockett, Bernie Field

Matos Winery in St. Catherines donated a beautiful basket with a bottle of Chardonnay, along with balsamic vinegar, and some other goodies. Tickets were sold for this, with the lucky winner being Karen Currie!

The ladies were treated to a closing banquet catered by Alan Carmichael who prepared a lovely turkey dinner with all the fixings. This was served to the ladies by club members Peter Murdoch, Gordon Matthews, Adrien Clarke and Paul Field, who all did a super job!

This event could not have been so successful without the generosity of our sponsor, Murphy’s Pharmacies. A big thank you to all those who helped out by providing food, volunteering in the kitchen, setting up, cleaning up, and doing many other jobs. As usual, a job well-done by all!!!

Events at our club would not be so successful without the continued support of Bev our Club Manager, Lance the Iceman, Ray our Custodian and our bartenders, who for this spiel were Al and Debby.

Donovan edges Abraham in extra end, Kelly blanks Burris to win Fall Fling Jr. Cashspiel

The 11th annual Fall Fling Junior Cashspiel, with a full draw of 24 teams representing all four Atlantic provinces, wrapped up this afternoon at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside.

In the junior men’s division, two “Mainland” teams, both with Island connections, went undefeated through the round robin and semi-final and met in the final, with the Michael Donovan foursome from Curl Moncton, which is coached by Summerside native Daryell Nowlan, and includes his sons Josh at third, and Jacob as alternate player, edging the Ryan Abraham squad from the Halifax Mayflower Curling Club, which includes third stone Brooks Roche from Montague, by a 10-9 score in an extra end.  The teams were tied at 3-3 going into the 5th end, where Donovan scored five points. Abraham fought back with deuces in ends six and eight, and single steals in nine and ten to tie the game, but Donovan had hammer in the final end, scoring the winning single.

Team Abraham edged the Liam Marin foursome from the Thistle-St. Andrews club in Saint John 6-5 in their semi-final game. The Marin rink includes Crapaud’s Tyler Smith at third. Team Donovan stole a single in the 5th and a deuce in the final end in a 10-6 win over the Alex MacFadyen rink from the host Silver Fox club in the other semi.

In the women’s final, the Annika Kelly squad blanked their Charlottetown Curling Complex clubmates the Alexis Burris team, by a 9-0 score (some Burris members are also Cornwall members). A steal of five points in the sixth end brought the game to an early conclusion.  Lauren Ferguson was skipping Team Burris, as Burris was sidelined by an injury.

In the women’s semi-final round, Team Burris, who finished round robin play with a 3-2 record, handed the  Kaylee Nodding rink from the Bridgewater Curling Club their first loss in the event, by an 8-6 score, while Team Kelly, also 3-2, got by Team Brianne Batherson from the Lakeshore Curling Club in Lower Sackville NS,  who had only one round robin loss, by a score of 8-5.

Ch’ship round set at Silver Fox Fall Fling

Round robin play wrapped up Saturday night at the 11th annual Fall Fling junior cashspiel at the Silver Fox in Summerside, with the semi-finals going at 9 this morning, and the junior men’s and junior women’s finals following at 1 pm. 12 junior men’s and an equal number of junior women’s teams took part, with representatives from all four Atlantic provinces.  Sunday games are 10 ends in this event (Friday and Saturday games were eight).

Two junior men’s teams – the Michael Donovan foursome from Curl Moncton, which is coached by Summerside native Daryell Nowlan, and includes his son Josh at third, along with the Ryan Abraham squad from the Halifax Mayflower Curling Club, which includes third stone Brooks Roche from Montague, finished round robin play with a perfect 5-0 win-loss record in their respective pools, and earned two of the four semi-final spots. The other two teams in the semis had 4-1 records, with Abraham taking on Liam Marin of Saint John’s Thistle-St. Andrews club, whose rink includes Crapaud’s Tyler Smith, while Donovan faces the Alex MacFadyen rink from the host Silver Fox club.

There was only one undefeated team after round robin play on the junior women’s side – the Kaylee Nodding team from Bridgewater NS. They’ll be taking on Charlottetown’s Alexis Burris rink, who finished the round robin with a 3-2 record, in the 9 am semi-final round. Team Brianne Batherson from the Lakeshore Curling Club in Lower Sackville NS had only one loss in the round robin, and will face the Annika Kelly rink from Charlottetown, who had 3 wins and 2 losses in the round robin. Teams MacLean from Cornwall and Reeves from Berwick NS also had 3-2 records in the A pool, but Team Kelly got the spot in the money round after tiebreaking rules were used.

Cornwall’s Sydney Howatt rink undefeated after opening day play at Fox Fall Fling

Two Junior Men’s, and two Junior Women’s draws are in the books following day one action at the 11th Annual Fall Fling Junior Cashspiel at the Silver Fox in Summerside. 12 Junior Men’s and an equal number of Junior Women’s teams are taking part in the event, which includes rinks from all four Atlantic Provinces, and seven teams from the Cornwall Curling Club.

There are only two undefeated teams in the Junior Women’s division, with the Sydney Howatt rink from Cornwall winning a close 5-3 game over the Alexis Burris team from Charlottetown, followed by a win against their Cornwall clubmates the Emily Sanderson rink. In the other round robin pool, the game that would determine the only other undefeated team went into an extra end between Kaylee Nodding from Bridgewater, and Annika Kelly from Charlottetown. Nodding scored 1 point with hammer for the 6-5 victory.

On the Junior Men’s side, four teams are still undefeated with 2-0 records: the Ryan Abraham rink from the Halifax Mayflower Curling Club, which includes Montague’s Brooks Roche at 3rd stone, the Alex MacFadyen squad from the host club, the Michael Donovan team from Curl Moncton, coached by Daryell Nowlan (son of Summerside’s Lou and Marg Nowlan), and the Liam Marin team from Saint John, which includes PEI Junior Champion skip Tyler Smith.

5th Annual Masters Plus Bonspiel set for Cornwall on Nov. 23/24

The Cornwall Curling Club is getting ready to host its 5th annual Masters Plus Bonspiel on Thursday November 23rd and Friday November 24th. Masters Plus teams include three curlers age 60 and over, and one who is at least 55. Curling fans are invited to take in the action as many of the teams have curlers who have won provincial titles. There is no charge to watch the curling.

Home Hardware Road to the Roar Pre-Trials underway Monday in Summerside (Curling Canada)

Some of Canada’s best curling teams will have a chance to take a significant step toward their gold-medal dreams when the 2017 Home Hardware Road to the Roar Pre-Trials gets underway Monday at Credit Union Place in Summerside, P.E.I.

Former Olympic medallists Shannon Kleibrink, left, and John Morris will be skipping teams at the 2017 Home Hardware Road to the Roar in Summerside, P.E.I. (Photos, Curling Canada/Andrew Klaver (left), Michael Burns (right)

Fourteen men’s and 14 women’s teams will be playing off in Summerside, pursuing the final two berths available to each gender into the 2017 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings, Dec. 2-10 in Ottawa.

That’s where Canada’s men’s and women’s four-player teams for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, will be decided — the teams that will attempt to defend the gold medals won by Team Jennifer Jones and Team Brad Jacobs at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi.

The 2017 Home Hardware Road to the Roar kicks off with a two rounds of competition on Monday — at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. (all times Atlantic). Then, from Tuesday through Friday, it will be four round-robin draws per day — at 8 a.m., noon, 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The Pre-Trials teams will be seeded one through 14 based on their 2016-17 CTRS rankings, and then split into two pools of seven for the round-robin competition.

The top three teams from each pool will advance to the playoffs beginning on Saturday, Nov. 11, with the first- and second-place teams crossing over to meet each other in the first round of the A-side. The winners will then meet for the first Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings berth.

The first-round losers, meanwhile, will drop to meet the third-place teams in each pool in the first round of the B-side. The winners of the two games will then meet, with the winner taking on the A-side final loser for the second Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings berth.

Two former Olympic medallists are in the field in Summerside. On the men’s side, John Morris, who won gold playing third for Kevin Martin in 2010 at Vancouver, is skipping his team from Vernon, B.C., while on the women’s side, Shannon Kleibrink of Okotoks, Alta., a bronze-medallist skip in 2006 at Torino, Italy, is looking for her fourth trip to the Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings.

Morris also participated in the 2013 Road to the Roar, and along with Jacobs qualified for the Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings in Winnipeg. Those teams would meet in the Roar of the Rings final, with Jacobs coming out on top.

Four-time world men’s champ Glenn Howard of Etobicoke, Ont., meanwhile, has had to make a late lineup change in advance of the Home Hardware Road to the Roar; knee problems forced vice-skip Richard Hart to step aside and assume coaching duties for the team, with Adam Spencer moving from the alternate to vice-skip slot.

Wednesday Ladder League Round One Draw/Schedule

Following Qualifier Night, the A and B pools have been determined for the first round of the Wednesday evening Ladder League, sponsored by Lowther’s Snow Removal (A Pool) and Sam’s Cornwall Restaurant (B Pool). I put the teams in random order within each pool for the first round.

A Pool teams

  • A1-Rachel MacLean
  • A2-Paul Neima
  • A3-Emily Sanderson
  • A4-Bill Hope
  • A5-Greg Robertson

  • B2-Greg Groves
  • B3-Peter Joostema
  • B4-Rob Gallant
  • B5-Gord Peters

As we have an odd number of teams (7) in each pool, we will have a crossover game each week against a team from the other pool, which will always be scheduled at 6:30 pm. It is very important that you pay attention to this, as your pool may have the 8:30 draw on a particular week, but you may be in the crossover game at 6:30 (and you don’t want to miss it!).

The “A” pool (plus the crossover game) gets the early draw the first week, as they had the late draw for the last week last season.

We will be using all four sheets and an 8 team, 4 sheet draw from Curling Canada (http://17962-presscdn-0-57.pagely.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Round-robin-draws-5-8.pdf) eliminating the game against “Team 8” at 8:30 (there will be one sheet available for rentals and practices), and pitting the team in the early draw that was to play “Team 8” against the late draw  team of the same number.

No Wednesday morning Drop-in curling this season

Please note that, for the first time ever, we have a full sixteen teams signed up for our Wednesday Daytime Team League, sponsored by The Iceman (Lance Lowther). Because of this, we will be using all four sheets at both 10 am and 12:30 pm. Consequently, the morning Daytime Drop-In draw, where teams are made up as players arrive, will be offered only on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

By the way, non-members are welcome to come out any of these four mornings — $10 drop-in fee, or $80 for 10 drop-ins.

  3. Teams are responsible for marking their score when they come off the ice. Players are strongly encouraged to play all 6 ends regardless of score.  If a team does decide to retire early the other team will be awarded 2 points for the remaining ends.
  4. Coaches / Chaperones can go out to the ice when they see an opportunity to teach their team. The spirit of the rule is to allow the coaches to help their teams think about different possibilities and learn, not just call the shots for the team. Other reasons may include helping their teams with etiquette, speeding up play or perhaps interpreting the rules.
  5. Have FUN and Good Curling!

Cornwall hosts PEI Curling Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

Photo (L-R): Robert Campbell, Mark Butler, Leanne Gallant (representing her husband, Peter), Kathy and Mark O’Rourke

Kathy O’Rourke won six PEI Women’s Curling Championships, three PEI Mixed Curling Championships, and one Canadian Mixed Curling Championship, along with a second place finish at the national women’s championship, only the second PEI skip to accomplish this feat. The four male inductees, Robert Campbell, Peter Gallant, Mark O’Rourke (a member of the Cornwall Curling Club), and Mark Butler, all played on the same team for PEI Tankard wins in 1991, ’93, ’95, ’97. and ’99, with each also having Tankard victories in other years with different team combinations, along with multiple PEI Mixed wins. Campbell also won the Canadian Mixed twice, with Gallant and O’Rourke also winning that event.

The evening, sponsored by PEI Ford Dealers, Beaton’s Wholesale Dry Goods, Phillips Feed Service, the Town of Cornwall, and the Consolidated Credit Union, started with the inductees, led by Hall of Fame chair Jerry Muzika.

Master of Ceremonies Paul H. Schurman then welcomed everyone to the event, and introduced a number  of dignitaries, including  who offered greetings to the attendees and the inductees, including Bush Dumville, MLA for District 15: West Royalty – Springvale, Cornwall Deputy Mayor Gary Ramsay, Curling Canada Governor Angela Hodgson, Curl PEI President Andrew Robinson, and Gary O’Sullivan, President of the Cornwall Curling Club. Robinson, who curled with and against the inductees, joked that his losses to them undoubtedly contributed to their Hall of Fame inductions.

The five inductees were then called to the stage, where they were presented with pins and certificates by a Hall of Fame Board Member. followed by the unveiling of their portrait, drawn by Board Member Wayne Wright. Each inductee then took the opportunity to thank their families, their teammates, their coaches, their sponsors and everyone else involved with advancing their curling careers over the years. Peter Gallant, who coaches the Korean Women’s team, was unable to attend, with his wife Leanne collecting the awards, and his son, Christopher reading this thank-you message.

How to find our Draws schedules

This is just a quick note about our draws schedules. You can find the latest schedules in the Draws section of CornwallCurling.com. We also send a daily schedule to The Guardian each evening for the Sports Notes section of the morning paper. We can’t guarantee it always gets published as we don’t pay for the service.

Whenever the draws change (after 7 weeks for most draws), we will send out the new draws via our News system to CornwallCurling.com, our emailing system, and to our Twitter and Facebook feeds, as well as putting them in the Draws section. And, of course, they are also up on the Draw Boards at the Club.

Cornwall’s Veronica Smith rink are runners-up at Lady Monctonian

Two Island rinks were in the playoffs at this weekend’s $9000 15-team Lady Monctonian Invitational Spiel, a World Curling Tour event at Curl Moncton, with Cornwall’s Veronica Smith rink making it to the final game, but losing 8-1 to the Theresa Breen foursome from Halifax in six ends. Smith got by previously-undefeated Robyn MacPhee and her Charlottetown team in an extra end in the quarter-final round, and kept on winning in the semis to advance to the championship match.  The runner-up  Smith rink includes third Jane DiCarlo, second Sabrina Smith, and lead Whitney Young.

Following Qualifier Night, we will then play three seven week rounds, with each team playing the other six teams in their pool, plus one crossover game, where they play a team from the other pool. The A and B pools will alternate between 6:30 and 8:30 pm draws times on sheets 1 through 3, with the crossover game always taking place on sheet 4 at 6:30. The A pool will get the early draw the first night, as they had the late draw the last game last season. The A and B pool winners from each round will receive prizes from our generous sponsors. At the end of each round, the bottom three teams from the A pool will drop down to B, while the top three teams from B will move on up to the the A pool, so there will be lots of movement between the pools.

Looking at the calendar, Draw One will go on Nov, 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29, plus Dec. 6 and 13. Draw Two will run Dec. 20,  Jan. 3 (if no conflict with the Tankard and Scotties),  10, 17, 24, and 31, and Feb. 8. Round three will go Feb. 14, 21, and 28, March 7, 14, 21, and 28. April 5 is also available if Jan, 3 is not, otherwise it could be used as a storm makeup day..

Here we go with the Random Draw for Qualifier Night, using Random, org.

Rules (credit: some come from the Ottawa Curling Club’s Ladder League)

  • Open semi-competitive league. Any player can play any position, and you can change from game to game.
  • 3 game points for a win, 1 game point for a loss, 0 game points for a loss by default. Mark this and your team’s points scored (“score points”) on the scoresheet. In the case of a default, award one score point per end to the winning team. In the case of a tie, award an additional score point for the draw to the button winner. If your score is not marked and you win, you will get one score point more than the losing team. If you lose, you will receive zero score points.
  • In the event of a default, the non-defaulting team will receive one score point for each scheduled end.
  • To break ties at the end of the round between teams with the same record, the tied teams are ranked by applying the following rules in order until one tie is broken. If a one or more ties remain, the rules are applied to each tie starting from rule 1. The process continues until all ties are broken and all teams are ranked.
    1. The teams are ranked using their head-to-head record against the other teams in the tie.
    2. The teams are ranked using the point differential for their games in the round against the other teams in the tie.
    3. The teams are ranked using the point differential for all the games in the round against all teams.
    4. The teams are ranked using their initial ranking in the round.
  • Ties: Decided by skip’s rocks with sweeping (by your team only).
  • Avoiding defaults/using spares: At least one regular team member (and three players in total) must be present for the game to count, or else a default is posted.  Spares should not play a higher position than the player replaced.
  • Storms: Any games cancelled due to storms, etc. either be moved to the end of the draw, if time permits, or NOT played. All subsequent weeks will remain where they were, and any draws missed will be added to the end of the round, if there are enough spare weeks in the season to play them, or cancelled. Any changes to this will be posted on CornwallCurling.com.
  • Teams may reschedule games to a different date and /or time by mutual consent. but ice time is often hard to find.
  • The buzzer will be used to ensure the teams are off the ice within the 2-hour time period.  If the buzzer sounds, teams will complete the current end in play to finish  the game. If tied, the standard draw to the button will then take place.

Wendy’s Sat. morning U16 league starts Oct. 28. Room for more teams

The Saturday Morning Under 16 Junior Development League, sponsored by Wendy’s Restaurants, starts on October 28 at the Cornwall Curling Club. Teams from all Island curling facilities are welcome. Seven teams have signed up so far, and there is room for more. The league is designed for teams of age to compete in the 2019 Canada Winter Games i.e. born on July 1 2000 or later.

Please ensure your team and team contacts are listed on the Junior League sign in sheet.

The league will be playing a round robin format beginning Saturday, Oct 28th.

The tentative dates are:

Oct 28, Nov 4, Nov 11, Dec 9, Dec 16, Dec 23, Jan 20, Jan 27, Feb 10, Feb 17, Mar 10, Mar 24 (if needed)

Please let us know of potential conflicts with the above dates. Due to the busy schedule of some teams, it will be impossible to handle all requests, and some teams may need to schedule make-up games.

The entry fee per player is $40.00 + HST. (A $17 Curl PEI/Curling Canada  fee will also be collected if not already paid at a PEI club this season)

The complete schedule and score sheet will be available on the first day of play (Oct 28).

For more info, contact the Cornwall Curling Club at (902) 566-4427 or cornwallcurling@eastlink.ca

Rules:

1. Round Robin format

2.  6 end games

  1. If eight teams or fewer, games will start at 9:30 Saturday Morning on the dates indicated. If nine teams or more, there will be 9 and 10:30 am draws. The 10:30 draws will go on the first available sheets from the earlier draw.
  2. Score will be tabulated as follows:  5 points for a win; 2.5 points each for a tie; 2 points for each end won; 1 point each for blank ends.

Here are photos from last year’s league, taken by Marci White.

Cornwall teams make the semi-finals in action on the mainland this past weekend

On the Atlantic curling scene, Cornwall’s Veronica Smith team, with Jane DiCarlo at third, Sabrina Smith at second, and lead Whitney Young, lost in the semi-finals at  the Capital Cup in Fredericton NB. They’re busy the next two weekends, too, competing at the Lady Monctonian in Moncton, NB, followed by the Dave Jones Spiel in Halifax,

In Junior action, 28 teams from five provinces, including seven from PEI, were taking part in the CCE Maritime Junior Spiel at Curl Moncton. There was only one age category, so many of the younger teams were there mainly to gain competitive curling experience. The PEI women’s rinks were skipped by Lauren Ferguson, PEI Junior champ Lauren Lenentine, and PEI U13 champ Clara Jack, all out of Cornwall, plus a new Charlottetown rink skipped by Annika Kelly, with New Brunswick’s Cynthia Pearson, attending school on PEI, playing third, Annika’s sister Tati Kelly at second, and Meghan Ching playing lead.

The PEI  junior men’s rinks included the Mitchell Schut team out of Cornwall, the Chase MacMillan foursome from Charlottetown, and the Alex MacFadyen rink out of the Silver Fox in Summerside. Also at the event were reigning PEI Junior champ Tyler Smith, now playing third for the Liam Marin rink out of the Thistle St. Andrews club in Saint John NB, and Brooks Roche, who was on Tyler’s Junior championship team, and is now playing third for the Ryan Abraham rink out of the Halifax Mayflower club.

The Lenentine team went 3-0 in the round robin to advance to the semi-finals in the women’s division, losing a close 6-5 decision to Cally Moore of CFB Halifax, when Lenentine’s final rock was just a touch heavy. Lenentine  then played in the game to determine third and 4th place, again losing 6-5, to the Erica Cluff rink from the Woodstock and Thistle St. Andrews clubs in NB. Moore took on Kaitlyn Jones of Halifax in the championship game, with Jones winning 6-3.
PEI’s Kelly rink finished round robin play with a 2-1 record, losing their game against eventual winner Jones, and then took on Lenentine in the quarter-finals, losing 6-3.
Cornwall’s young Clara Jack team won their Consolation game 7-5 over Kate Paterson of the Carleton Curling Club in Saint John, to finish with a 1-3 win-loss record.
Their clubmates the Lauren Ferguson rink won two of their three round robin games, but lost 4-1 to Vanessa Roy of the host club  in their Consolation game to finish with an even 2-2 record.

The junior men’s event was won by the Owen Purcell rink from Chester NS, who defeated the Ryan Abraham foursome from the Halifax Mayflower club, which includes PEI’s Brooks Roche at third, by a 4-3 score in the championship game. The Marin rink, which includes Tyler Smith, lost 8-5 to Vincent Roberge from the Etchemin club in Quebec in their quarter-final game.

PEI’s MacFadyen rink beat the younger MacMillan team in their round robin encounter. Both teams recorded losses to event runner-up Abraham, and to third place finisher Roberge to go to their consolation games. MacFadyen won his 9-5 over Layton MacCabe from the host club. MacMillan lost his to Michael Donovan from Curl Moncton .
The Mitchell Schut team lost three fairly close round robin games, but went on to pick up a  7-1 win over Brennan LeBlanc of the host club in their consolation match.

Many of the teams of eligibility age for the 2019 Canada Winter Games will be competing in a warmup spiel this coming weekend at the Gage Curling Club in Oromocto NB. Also coming up is a U21 and Canada Games age spiel Nov. 3-5 in Saint John, and the Fall Fling U21 spiel in Summerside, Nov. 17-19.

Cornwall to host Provincial Men’s, Women’s, and Under 13 Ch’ships this season

The PEI championship curling schedule will be announced officially at this evening’s Curl PEI Annual General Meeting in Charlottetown, with Cornwall set to host both the Provincial Tankard Men’s Championship and the Scotties Women’s Championship, both running from January 3-9, 2018. This will be a busy time at our Club, with the two premier events happening at the same time, and will undoubtedly bring in some extra revenue. It will also require some regular draw cancellations, and LOTS of volunteers, so we will be calling on you for your support.

We will also be the site where our youngest provincial champs will be selected, with the Under 13 event going from March 16-18, 2018. Cornwall’s Clara Jack rink are last year’s champs.

Here is the full championship schedule for this season:

Looking ahead, Cornwall is scheduled to host the Canada Winter Games selection finals (dates to be announced) in advance of the February 2019 Games, and the U18, Feb. 22-26, 2019. The 2018-2019 season schedule is still a draft, and subject to change.

Cornwall to host PEI Curling Hall of Fame induction ceremony upstairs on Oct. 23

Note: Mark O’Rourke has been curling in our Tuesday night league in recent years.

The Prince Edward Island Curling Hall of Fame and Museum is set to host its eleventh annual induction ceremony on Monday October 23, 2017 at the Cornwall Curling Club in Cornwall, PEI.

Five inductees from the Charlottetown Curling Club, Mark Butler, Robert Campbell, Peter Gallant, Mark O’Rourke and Kathy O’Rourke, are being honoured for their achievements and contributions to the sport of curling:

Each of the inductees has excelled in their sport:

Mark Butler

Mark Butler has had a stellar career as a competitor with one provincial junior curling championship, six provincial men’s curling championships and eight PEI Mixed Curling Championships. Mark will be inducted into the PEI Curling Hall of Fame as a curler.

Robert Campbell

A curling career that began more than 35 years ago has seen Robert achieve one provincial Junior Men’s Curling Championship, eight provincial Men’s Curling Championships, three provincial Mixed and two Canadian Mixed Curling Championships, as well as several all-star awards at national events throughout the years — an impressive career worthy of induction into the Prince Edward Island Curling Hall of Fame as a curler.

Peter Gallant

Peter Gallant’s curling career has taken him from PEI and Canadian competitions to those on international ice. Outstanding as a curler and a coach, Peter has nine Provincial Men’s curling championships, four Provincial Mixed, a Canadian Mixed title where he posted an 11 -1 record; and one provincial Senior Men’s title, during a 28-year curling career.  At national events, he won several all-star awards as a curler. He has considerable coaching experience, having coached some of the best teams in the world, and his success coaching South Korea’s Team EunJung Kim as they prepare for the Olympics indicates that this part of his story is not over yet.  Peter will be inducted into the PEI Curling Hall of Fame as a curler/builder.

Kathy O’Rourke

Kathy O’Rourke has excelled as a curler in Women’s and Mixed competition.  In all, Kathy has six PEI Women’s Curling Championships, three PEI Mixed Curling Championships, and one Canadian Mixed Curling Championship. Two silver medal wins at Canadian Curling Championship events – one at the Scotties and one at the mixed – as well as nine provincial runners-up placings are also part of her incredible curling career. Kathy will be inducted into the PEI Curling Hall of Fame as a curler.

Mark O’Rourke

Mark O’Rourke been a strong competitor for more than 40 years, with an impressive tally of wins, with one provincial Junior Men’s Curling Championship, ten PEI Men’s Curling Championships, two provincial Senior Men’s, three provincial Mixed, and one Canadian Mixed curling title. Mark has shown that he is one of the most talented and most-winning curlers to come out of Prince Edward Island. Mark will be inducted into the PEI Curling Hall of Fame as a curler.

“Recognizing the accomplishments of curlers and builders who have dedicated their time and energy to the sport of curling is important, not only to them and their families and friends, but it is also an important component of our curling history”, says Jerry Muzika, Chairman of the PEI Curling Hall of Fame and Museum. Muzika notes that this is the eleventh annual induction ceremony, and he invites everyone to come out and honour the inductees.

Curling Canada Board of Governors member Angela Hodgson says that she is very pleased that the PEI Curling Hall of Fame and Museum is continuing its work to recognize curlers and builders, and looks forward to attending the event.

The main objectives of the Curling Hall of Fame and Museum are to recognize, honour and pay tribute to individuals or teams on the basis of playing ability, as an amateur or a professional (“Curler” category), and to individuals who have given distinguished service and have made major contributions to the development of curling on Prince Edward Island (“Builder” category).

The event, with host Paul H. Schurman, gets underway at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10.00 and are available at the door.

This year’s ceremony is sponsored by PEI Ford Dealers, Beaton’s Wholesale Dry Goods, Consolidated Credit Union Ltd., and Phillips Feed Service, and the Town of Cornwall.

Here are the full biographies of the inductees:

Mark Butler

Mark started to curl at the Charlottetown Curling Club at an early age and soon was active competing for provincial championship titles.

In 1984, he won the Prince Edward Island Junior Men’s Curling Championship playing third with skip Alan Brown, second Mike Dillon, and lead Phillip Gorveatt.

Mark won six Prince Edward Island Men’s Curling Championships. The first was in 1991, with skip Robert Campbell, third Peter Gallant, second Mark O’Rourke, with Mark playing at lead stone.

With the same team lineup as in 1991, Mark won again in 1993, 1995, 1997, and 1999.

His last win was in 2001, playing lead for skip Peter MacDonald, third Peter Gallant, and second Mark O’Rourke.

He was runner-up in 2016.

Mark won eight Prince Edward Island Mixed Curling Championships, all with skip John Likely and third Susan McInnis, with Mark at the second stone position each time.  Gail MacNeil played lead twice in 1991, due to the change in the provincials play downs, and again in 1992, 1993 and 1996. In 1999, Nancy Cameron replaced Gail at lead.  In 2000, Krista Cameron replaced Nancy, but in 2001, Nancy Cameron came back to play the lead position.

With a stellar career as a competitor with one provincial Junior curling championship, six provincial Men’s curling championships and eight PEI Mixed Curling Championships, Mark Butler will be inducted into the PEI Curling Hall of Fame as a curler.

Robert Campbell

Photo: Robert Campbell

Robert started his curling career at the Charlottetown Curling Club in 1980.  Soon after, he was competing at the provincial level.

Robert won the Prince Edward Island Junior Men’s Curling Championship in 1985 playing third for skip Kent Scales, with Andy MacDonald at second and Phillip Gorveatt at lead. The Scales foursome lost the final of the Canadian Junior Men’s Curling Championship to Kevin Martin, however all four members of the Prince Edward Island rink were named to the All-Star team. The Scales foursome was also named 1985 Sport PEI Team of the Year.

Robert won eight Prince Edward Island Men’s Curling Championships. His first trip to the Canadian Men’s Curling Championship was in 1991, skipping his team of third Peter Gallant, second Mark O’Rourke, and lead Mark Butler. As a rookie skip at the Brier, Robert and his team achieved a winning record of 6-5.

He won the provincial Men’s title in 1993, 1995, 1997, and in 1999 with the same team. Notably, in 1995, the team finished round robin play at the nationals with a 7-4 record.

Playing third for John Likely in 2002 brought another provincial men’s curling title to Robert. Erik Brodersen at second stone and Jeff Smith at lead rounded out the team.

In 2003 he picked up another Tankard win as he skipped his team of Kevin Champion at third, Phillip Gorveatt at second, and Mike Dillon at lead.

In 2007, Robert played lead for Peter Gallant when they won the Prince Edward Island Men’s Curling Championship. Playing third was Kevin Champion, and second was Mark O’Rourke.

Robert won the Prince Edward Island Mixed Curling Championship in 1989, skipping the team of third Angela Roberts, second Mark O’Rourke, and lead Kathy O’Rourke. They went on to win the 1989 Canadian Mixed Curling Championships in Brandon, Manitoba. Robert was named to the All-Star team (skip). The Campbell foursome was nominated for Sport PEI Team of the Year.

Twenty-one years later, in 2010, he again won the Prince Edward Island Mixed Curling Championship and went on to a second Canadian Mixed Curling Championship title at the 2011 Canadian Mixed Curling Championships held, again in Manitoba. Robert skipped his team of third Rebecca Jean MacDonald (née MacPhee), second Robbie Doherty, and lead Jackie Reid. Robert was again, named to the All-Star team (skip). The Campbell foursome was nominated for Sport PEI Team of the Year.

Robert and Rebecca Jean then represented Canada at the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championships in St. Paul, Minnesota where they went 4-3 before losing their second tie-breaker game.

In 2013, Robert won the Prince Edward Island Mixed Curling Championship and made a third trip to the Canadian Mixed Curling Championships, to Quebec in 2014, skipping the same team of Rebecca Jean MacDonald, Robbie Doherty and Jackie Reid.

He was runner up in the Prince Edward Island Men’s Curling Championship twice, once in 1990 (playing third for Peter Gallant) and again in 2010 (as skip).

In 1991 and 1992, he was runner up in the finals of the McCain SuperSpiel . Ed Werenich beat him in 1991, and Russ Howard beat him in 1992. The Campbell rink finally broke through in 1996, winning the McCain SuperSpiel East against Don Westphal.

Robert was fifth player at the Canadian Men’s Curling Championship twice, first in 2001 (with the Peter MacDonald rink) and again in 2015 (with the Adam Casey rink).

In addition to Robert’s on-ice curling achievements, he has also served on the Board of Directors at the Charlottetown Curling Club. He has helped coach several teams over the years and has volunteered his time for many curling clinics that have been held at the club.

A curling career that began more than 35 years ago has seen Robert achieve one provincial Junior men’s, eight provincial men’s, three provincial mixed and two Canadian Mixed Curling Championships. It is interesting to note that Robert played all positions except second.

Robert’s stellar career is certainly worthy of induction into the Prince Edward Island Curling Hall of Fame as a curler.

Peter Gallant

Peter started to curl at the Charlottetown Curling Club in 1971, while attending Birchwood Junior High School.  This was the beginning of a curling career that has taken him from local and Canadian competitions to those on international ice.

Peter won his first Prince Edward Island Men’s Curling Championship in 1982, playing second with skip Peter Jenkins, third Doug Weeks, and lead Roy Rodd.

His second win came in 1991 with skip Robert Campbell, Peter, at third, Mark O’Rourke at second, and Mark Butler as lead.

In 2001, again at the third position, Peter was in the winner’s circle with Peter MacDonald skipping, Mark O’ Rourke at second, and Mark Butler at lead.

His next win was in 2007, when he threw skip rocks for the team, with Kevin Champion at third, Mark O’Rourke at second, and lead Robert Campbell.

His ninth provincial men’s curling championship was won in 2008, skipping his own team of Kevin Champion at third, Mark O’Rourke at second and John Desrosiers at lead.

He won the Prince Edward Island Mixed Curling Championship in 1986, with Kathie Gallant at third, Barrie Stevenson at second, and lead Marion MacAulay.

In 1987, skipping his team of third Kathie Gallant, second Phillip Gorveatt, and lead Simone MacKenzie, he again won the Prince Edward Island Mixed Curling Championship.  The team went on to win the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship held in Summerside, posting an 11 and 1 record. Peter received the all-star skip award.

His fourth Mixed win was in 1991, skipping the team, with Kathie Gallant at third, Phillip Gorveatt at second, and Leslie Allen at lead.

Peter also won a Provincial Senior Men’s Curling Championship in 2010, playing third for skip Rod MacDonald. Peter MacDonald was the second and Doug MacGregor played lead. Peter won the second team all-star third award at the Nationals.

As well as impressive curling accomplishments as a player, coaching has played a large part of Peter’s involvement with the game.

Peter coached his son Brett Gallant’s team, when they won the Prince Edward Island Junior Men’s Curling Championship in 2009 and 2010. In 2009, the team went on the win the Canadian Junior Men’s Curling Championship in Salmon Arm, B.C. They went on to be the Silver Medalists at the Worlds Junior Men’s Curling Championship in Vancouver.

Peter coached the Mike Gaudet team at the Canadian Men’s Curling Championship in 2012 and also coached the Brad Gushue team at the Brier in 2013 and 2014.

He coached the Tyler Smith rink, which included Peter’s son Christopher, to their championship win at the 2017 Prince Edward Island Junior Men’s Curling Championship in Montague.

In the winter of 2016, Peter joined Team EunJung Kim in South Korea as their coach.  Since then, the team has gone on to win the 2016 Korean National Championship, and the 2017 Pacific Asia Championship, which enabled them to play at the 2017 World Women’s Championship in Beijing. As well, the team was successful in winning the 2017 Korean National Championship, giving them the right to represent Korea at next year’s Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.  Peter is currently working with the team in preparation for the Olympic games in February.

Outstanding as a curler and a coach, Peter has won nine Provincial Men’s curling championships, four Provincial Mixed, a Canadian Mixed, and one Senior Men’s title during a 28-year curling career.  He has considerable coaching experience, having coached some of the best teams in the world and his success in South Korea indicates that this part of his story is not quite yet over.

Peter will be inducted into the PEI Curling Hall of Fame as a curler/builder.
