MacPhee, MacKenzie one win away from repeat Scotties, Tankard titles

The defending champion Robyn MacPhee and Eddie MacKenzie rinks from the Charlottetown Curling Club are both just one away from repeating as PEI Scotties women’s and Tankard men’s champions. They both captured their second modified triple knockout sections this evening, which means that a win in either of their two championship round games on Sunday at 2 and 7 pm will give them the repeat title, while their opponents, the Lauren Lenentine team from Cornwall and the John Likely rink from Cornwall and Charlottetown, who won one section each, would have to win both games to become champions.

MacPhee came from behind to beat last year’s runner-up, Veronica Smith from Cornwall, 8-5 in this evening’s women’s “C” final. MacPhee, playing with Sarah Fullerton, Meaghan Hughes, and Michelle McQuaid, had a 5-3 lead after eight ends, singles in nine and ten tied the game at 5, and a steal of three in the extra game MacPhee the win, and a “double life” in the championship round against “A” section winner Lenentine.

(L-R) Chris Gallant, Josh Barry, Eddie MacKenzie

On the Tankard men’s side, Eddie MacKenzie and his Charlottetown team of Josh Barry, Chris Gallant, and Sean Ledgerwood were ahead 3-1 after five ends in this evening’s “C” final against Cornwall and Charlottetown’s John Likely, who narrowed the gap to 1 point with a single in end seven. MacKenzie scored deuces in ends 8 and 9 to win the game with 7 -2 score. MacKenzie can now take the title with a win in either game Sunday against Likely, while Likely would have to win both.

The  PEI Scotties winning team advances to the national Scotties Tournament of  Hearts, January 27 to February 4 in Penticton BC, while the Tankard winner will play in the Tim Hortons Brier, March 3-11 in Regina SK.

MacPhee and Likely win B qualifiers – Scotties, Tankard will both go to Sunday

There WILL be a championship round on Sunday at the PEI Scotties provincial women’s and the PEI Tankard provincial men’s curling championships, as there are separate winners of the A and B sections of both events, with Robyn MacPhee and John Likely winning the B finals this morning. Had “A” winners Lauren Lenentine or Eddie MacKenzie won this morning, they could have wrapped up their event with the “C” final this evening at seven, as winning three sections would have given them the title without playing a championship round.

TANKARD

John Likely

In the PEI Tankard men’s championship, John Likely and his Cornwall/Charlottetown squad scored triples in ends two, six, and nine in a 10-8 win over Eddie MacKenzie from Charlottetown, who won the “A” event. Charlottetown’s Tyler Harris eliminated clubmate Phil Gorveatt with a 7-2 win this morning. Harris and MacKenzie square off at 2 pm, with the winner facing Likely at 7 pm in the “C” final. If either “A” winner MacKenzie (who would have to win this afternoon to advance) or “B” winner Likely win this evening, they would have to be beaten twice in the 2 and 7 pm championship round on Sunday, while their opponent would take the title with a win in either match.

Other members of Team Likely are Robert Campbell, Matthew Nabuurs, Robbie Doherty and alternate Mark O’Rourke.

SCOTTIES

Robyn MacPhee

In the Scotties B final, it took an extra end for the defending champion Robyn MacPhee team from Charlottetown to get by two-time reigning junior champion Lauren Lenentine team from Cornwall, who won the “A” event.  MacPhee scored a triple in the extra end for a 10-7 victory. Other members of Team MacPhee are Sarah Fullerton, Meaghan Hughes, and Michelle McQuaid.  Lenentine led 4-0 lead after two ends, and 6-2 after five ends, but MacPhee grabbed a deuce in six and stole singles in the next three ends to lead 7-6 after nine ends. Lenentine was kept to a single in 10 to bring the game to the extra end.

Last year’s runner-up, Veronica Smith from Cornwall, stayed alive with an 8-5 win over Charlottetown’s Lisa Jackson. Clubmates Lenentine and Smith now meet at 2 pm, with the winner advancing to the 7 pm “C” final against MacPhee. If either Lenentine (who first has to win this afternoon) or MacPhee win tonight’s game, capturing 2 of 3 modified triple knockout sections, they would have “double life” going into the Sunday championship round (with games at 2 and  7 pm) and would win the title if they won either game, while their opponent would have to win both.

The  PEI Scotties winning team advances to the national Scotties Tournament of  Hearts, January 27 to February 4 in Penticton BC, while the Tankard winner will play in the Tim Hortons Brier, March 3-11 in Regina SK.

PEI’s two-time reigning Junior champs, the Cornwall rink of Lauren Lenentine, Kristie Rogers, Breanne Burgoyne and Rachel O’Connor, remain undefeated, winning their third game in a row at the provincial Scotties Tournament of Hearts by defeating their host-club teammates, and last year’s PEI Scotties runners-up, the Veronica Smith rink, by an 11-2 score this afternoon to take the “A” section of the modified triple knockout draw. Team Lenentine, who recently repeated as provincial junior women’s champions, won both their games by an 8-5 score on Thursday, over Montague’s Tammy Dewar rink, and Charlottetown’s Lisa Jackson squad. Jackson did not play tonight, with third Carolyn Coulson moving up to skip, and alternate Aleya Quilty playing lead.

Veronica Smith

Smith, last year’s PEI Scotties runner-up, stole five consecutive ends in a 9-0 blanking of defending champion Robyn MacPhee of Charlottetown in the opening draw. MacPhee came back with a 7-3 win in eight ends over Montague’s Tammy Dewar in the next draw.

Defending men’s champ MacKenzie recorded a 10-9 come-from-behind win over Charlottetown and Cornwall’s John Likely in his opener. Likely had a 7-2 lead after six ends, but MacKenzie came back with a pair of triples to lead 8-7. The teams traded deuces in the last two ends. MacKenzie then took on clubmate Tyler Harris, who was playing with only three players. Tied at three after six, MacKenzie took control with a four-point seventh end and a deuce in the eighth to bring the game to handshakes with a 9-3 score.

Phil Gorveatt

Gorveatt had a bye in the first draw, defeating Crapaud’s Alan Inman 6-4 in draw 2 to advance to the A final.

The second Friday draw is at 7 pm, with the “B” finals coming up at 9 am Saturday.

Lenentine, MacFadyen looking forward to Canadian junior curling ch’ships (Journal)

Will represent P.E.I. in Shawinigan, Que.

O’LEARY – If she were to offer advice to the Prince Edward Island men’s team heading to the 2018 New Holland Canadian junior curling championships with her later this month, Lauren Lenentine said she’d tell them to enjoy the experience.

From left, skip Lauren Lenentine, mate Kristie Rogers, second stone Breanne Burgoyne, lead Rachel O’Connor and coach Pat Quilty is heading to the New Holland Canadian junior women’s curling championship for a second consecutive year. They defended their 2017 Pepsi P.E.I. title at Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary on Friday night, going undefeated (7-0) in the six-team modified triple-knockout championship.

“With all the teams from across Canada, you never know what you’re going to face, so having fun, meeting new people and enjoying the experience. That would be my advice. That’s what we did last year,” said Lenentine.

Skip Alex MacFadyen, from left, James Dalton, mate; Leslie Noye, second stone; Parker MacFadyen, lead, and coach David MacFadyen from the Silver Fox in Summerside won the team’s first Pepsi P.E.I. junior men’s curling championship at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary on Friday night.

And joining the Cornwall women’s team will be the Alex MacFadyen rink from the Silver Fox in Summerside. For MacFadyen, 19, his 17-year-old brother, Parker, who plays lead, and mate James Dalton, 20, this was their seventh year curling together in the P.E.I. Pepsi junior (under-21) championships. This year, second stone Leslie Noye, who had previously skipped his own team out of Alberton, joined Team MacFadyen.
“It feels wonderful,” the winning men’s skip said moments after a nail-biting win over the Mitchell Schut rink from Cornwall in the C event final of the four-team men’s modified triple-knockout championship.

The Canadian championship will be played on arena ice and club ice. MacFadyen is especially looking forward to trying out arena ice for only the second time in his curling career.
“It’s a nice change. Very consistent ice all the time,” he added. “It should be good to play on.”

It was a clean sweep at the Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championships at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary for both the defending champion Lauren Lenentine jr. women’s rink from the Cornwall Curling Club, and the Alex MacFadyen jr. men’s foursome from the Silver Fox in Summerside. Both teams went undefeated, capturing all three sections of the modified triple knockout draw, so that the event wrapped up with the “C” finals on Friday evening without playing the Saturday championship round.

The Lauren Lenentine rink, which includes third stone Kristie Rogers, second Breanne Burgoyne, and lead Rachel O’Connor, with coach Pat Quilty, beat Charlottetown’s Annika Kelly rink 11-1 in the A final, and went on to defeat the Lauren Ferguson rink from Crapaud, Cornwall, and Charlottetown 6-4 in the B, and 6-3 in the C final of the six-team field. Pepsi PEI Jr. Ch’ships could wrap up this evening

The  “C”  finals of the modified triple knockout draw of the Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championships go at 6:30 this evening at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary. Two teams, the defending champion Lauren Lenentine junior women’s team from Cornwall, and the Alex MacFadyen junior men’s rink from the Silver Fox in Summerside, have won the first two of the three sections of the draw, and a win by either of them this evening would book their ticket to the 2018 New Holland Canadian Junior Curling Championships, Jan. 21 – 28 in Shawinigan Quebec. Their opponents, the Lauren Ferguson team from Crapaud, Cornwall, and Charlottetown, and the Mitchell Schut foursome from Cornwall would have to win tonight’s game and two championship round games on Saturday at 9:30 and 2, in order to take the provincial title.

Lenentine beat Charlottetown’s Annika Kelly 8-5 while Ferguson got by Cornwall’s Sydney Howatt by the same score this afternoon to advance to the C final. Lenentine beat Ferguson in the A final, and Kelly in the  B, while MacFadyen got by Schut in both the A and B finals. Schut beat Charlottetown’s Chase MacMillan team this morning to advance to the junior men’s C final.

End by end results are available at PEICurling.com. Six junior women’s and four junior men’s teams began play on Wednesday.

Cornwall’s Lenentine wins 2nd section, and Mitchell Schut advances to C final at Pepsi Juniors

The defending champion Lauren Lenentine rink from here at the Cornwall Curling Club remains undefeated and is one step closer to repeating as Junior Women’s champion at the Pepsi Provincial Juniors at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary, after winning both the “A” and now the “B” finals of the modified triple knockout draw. This puts the team into both Saturday finals, where they will win the event if they win either game, while their opponent, the C finalist, would have to win both. If Team Lenentine advances to and wins the C event final at 6:30 this evening, they will be declared the champion at that point, and the championship round would not be played.

The Lenentine squad beat the Lauren Ferguson team from Crapaud, Cornwall, and Charlottetown by a 6-4 score in the B final this morning, stealing singles in the fifth through seventh ends. There were also two games in the C event this morning, with Annika Kelly of Charlottetown eliminating Cornwall’s Emily Sanderson team in a closely-fought 8-5 battle. Kelly got out of the gate fast with a three-point first end, but Sanderson scored a trio of singles to tie it up, and pulled ahead with a stolen single in the seventh. Kelly recovered with a deuce in eight and a pair of stolen singles to pull out the win. The other game saw Sydney Howatt eliminate her Cornwall clubmate Rachel MacLean with a 5-2 win. MacLean led 1-0 after the first five ends, with Howatt recording a triple in end six and a ninth-end steal for the win.

Lenentine plays Kelly, with Howatt facing Ferguson in the “C” semi-finals at 2 this afternoon, with the winners going to the 6:30 pm “C” final.

Meanwhile, in the Junior Men’s division, Cornwall’s Mitchell Schut team will be competing in their third section final, at 6:30 this evening. They will have to beat the Alex MacFadyen team from the Silver Fox three times – the C final, and both Saturday championship round games in order to win the championship, while a win in any of these games  would punch MacFadyen’s ticket to the 2018 New Holland Canadian Junior Curling Championships, Jan. 21 – 28 in Shawinigan Quebec.

Schut eliminated the Chase MacMillan team from Charlottetown with a 7-2 win this morning, after MacMillan sent Mitchell’s brother Devin to the sidelines with a 9-3 win on Thursday evening.

MacFadyen team one win away from Pepsi Jr. Men’s title, Lenentine vs Ferguson in Jr. Women’s B final

The Alex MacFadyen rink from the Silver Fox club in Summerside remains undefeated in the four-team junior men’s division, and needs to win just one of their next three games in order to become the Pepsi Provincial Junior Men’s champions. They captured the “A”  final on Wednesday, and the “B” final this evening, both against Mitchell Schut and his Cornwall team, winning this evening by a 9-4 score, after stealing a triple in the eighth end to bring the game to an early conclusion. This win puts the MacFadyen team into the “C”  final of the modified triple-knockout draw, as well as both games of the two-game championship round. A win in any of these games will give him the title, without having to play the subsequent games.

In the other junior men’s game this evening, the young Chase MacMillan rink from Charlottetown eliminated the Devin Schut team with a 9-3 win in eight ends, leading 6-0 at the fifth end break. MacMillan now takes on Mitchell Schut in the “C” semi-final at 9:30 am Friday, with the winner facing MacFadyen in the “C” final at 6:30 pm.

On the Junior Women’s side, the defending champion Lauren Lenentine rink from Cornwall, who won the “A” final, is still undefeated, and will play their clubmates the Lauren Ferguson rink in the “B” final at 9:30 am Friday. Lenentine led 7-0 after three ends in her “B” semi-final game this evening against clubmate Rachel MacLean, going on to win 9-3 in seven ends. The other Lauren (Ferguson) and her team from Crapaud, Cornwall, and Charlottetown downed Charlottetown’s Annika Kelly squad by an 11-3 score in only six ends, recording both a four and a five-point end.

The “C” event also gets underway on Friday morning at 9:30, with Cornwall’s Sydney Howatt and Rachel MacLean facing off in one “must win” game, and Emily Sanderson of Cornwall taking on Kelly in the other. The winner of Howatt vs. MacLean takes on Ferguson in one “C”  semi-final at 2 pm, with the winner of Sanderson vs. Kelly facing Lenentine in the other. The winners advance to the “C” final at 6:30.

The two-game championship round is scheduled for Saturday at 9:30 and 2 pm. If Lenentine, who won the A final, also wins the B and C finals, the championship round would not be required.

The eventual junior men’s and women’s winners advance to the 2018 New Holland Canadian Junior Curling Championships, Jan. 21 – 28 in Shawinigan Quebec.

Defending Junior Women’s champ Lenentine, from Cornwall, downed Charlottetown’s Annika Kelly foursome 11-1 in only six ends, helped out by a stolen triple in the third end, and a four point fifth end. Mitchell got by older brother Devin 7-5 in their previous encounter on Wednesday.

Lenentine and Kelly both drop down to “B” semi-finals at 6:30 pm. Kelly will play the winner of a 2 pm match between Cornwall’s Sydney Howatt and Crapaud, Cornwall, and Charlottetown’s Lauren Ferguson teams, while Lenentine awaits the victor of the 2 pm contest between her Cornwall clubmates Rachel MacLean and Emily Sanderson. The women’s “B”  final goes at 9:30 am Friday.

If a team wins all three sections, they will win the event without a championship round. If a team wins two sections, they will advance to a championship game against the winner of the other section and will take the championship if they win the game. If the other team wins, there will be a second championship game, with the winner of that game going to the nationals. If there are three separate section winners, the team that played in the most section finals will earn a bye to the second championship game where they will face the winner of a game between the other two finalists.

The winning Junior Men’s and  Women’s champions will advance to the 2018 New Holland Canadian Junior Curling Championships, Jan. 21 – 28 in Shawinigan Quebec.
