Tyler Smith, Cornwall’s Lauren Lenentine rinks sweep Pepsi Juniors. Ch’ship round not required

Both the Tyler Smith junior men’s rink from the Charlottetown Curling Club, and the Lauren Lenentine junior women’s team from the Cornwall Curling Club continued their winning ways this afternoon, going undefeated and sweeping all three sections of the Modified Triple Knockout draw to win the Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championships, without having to play the two game championship round that was scheduled for Friday.

The Smith rink, which includes third Christopher Gallant, second stone (and Cornwall Curling Club member) Noah O’Connor, and lead Brooks Roche, with coaches Peter Gallant and Kevin Smith, won their first section final on Wednesday morning, 10-4 over Cornwall’s Devin Schut rink, their second on Wednesday evening, also against the Schut team, by a 7-3 score, and their third this afternoon, with a 6-0 shutout over the Dylan Lowery squad from Montague and Summerside. The Schut team, which includes third stone Owen Collier, second Tyler Garnhum, and lead Alec Huestis, with coach David Parker are awarded the runner-up position, as they competed in the first two of the three section finals. Lowery stole a deuce in the extra end to get by Schut in the “C” semi-final this morning and advance to “C” final. The rules state that if a team that sweeps all three knockout sections, a championship round is not required, so Smith takes the title.

Junior Men’s winners (L-R): Tyler Smith, Christopher Gallant, Noah O’Connor, Brooks Roche, coach Peter Gallant

Junior Men’s runners-up (L-R): Devin Schut, Owen Collier, Tyler Garnhum, Alec Huestis, coach David Parker

Team Lenentine, with third stone Kristie Rogers, second Breanne Burgoyne, and lead Rachel O’Connor, with coach Pat Quilty, beat the Kaleigh Mackay team from Charlottetown and Montague 9-4 in the “A” final, 9-5 in the B, and 9-5 as well in the “C” event, eliminating the need for a championship round. Other members of the runner-up Mackay foursome are third Danielle Collings, second Alyssa Wright, and lead stone Kaleigh Peters, with coach Tammy Dewar.

Mackay stole the last end to win the “C” event semi-final this morning, 8-7 over the young Lauren Ferguson rink from Cornwall, who finished with an impressive 3-3 record in their first Pepsi Juniors.

Junior Women’s winners (L-R): Lauren Lenentine, Kristie Rogers, Breanne Burgoyne, Rachel O’Connor, coach Pat Quilty

Junior Women’s runners-up (L-R): Kaleigh Mackay, Danielle Collings, Alyssa Wright, Kaleigh Peters, coach Tammy Dewar

This year’s winners, teams Smith and Lenentine, advance to the 2017 Canadian Junior (Under 21) Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships,  Jan. 21-29 at the Archie Browning Sports Centre in Esquimalt (a suburb of Victoria) BC, using the facility’s hockey arena and six-sheet curling rink to decide which teams will represent Canada at the 2017 World Junior Curling Championships in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Ten teams – 5 junior men’s and 5 junior women’s took part in this year’s PEI championship, for curlers under age 21.

Cornwall’s Lauren Lenentine along with Tyler Smith win 1st 2 sections of Pepsi Juniors and have big advantage going into Thurs. play

The Lauren Lenentine junior women’s foursome from the Cornwall Curling Club, and the Tyler Smith junior men’s rink from the Charlottetown Curling Complex, have both won the first two of three sections of the Modified Triple Knockout draw, and now have a big advantage at the Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championships at the Montague Curling Club. If one or both of these teams should also win the third section final, at 3:30 pm on Thursday, they will win their respective junior men’s or women’s championship without the Friday championship round. If they don’t win the third section final, they will have a “double life” in the two game championship round on Friday, winning the title if they take either game, while their opponent, the winner of the third section, would have to win both.

Team Lenentine, with third stone Kristie Rogers, second Breanne Burgoyne, and lead Rachel O’Connor, with coach Pat Quilty, beat the Kaleigh Mackay team from Charlottetown and Montague 9-4 in the “A” final, and 9-5 in the B.

Photo (L-R): Christopher Gallant, Tyler Smith, Noah O’Connor

The Smith rink, which includes third Christopher Gallant, second stone Noah O’Connor (who is a Cornwall Curling Club member), and lead Brooks Roche, with coaches Peter Gallant and Kevin Smith, won their first section final on Wednesday morning, 10-4 over Cornwall’s Devin Schut rink, and their second on Wednesday evening, also against the Schut team, by a 7-3 score.

The sudden-death “C” event wraps up on Thursday, with the Devin Schut squad taking on Dylan Lowery and his Montague/Silver Fox rink at 11 in the junior men’s section, with the winner facing Smith in the “C” final at 3:30. If Smith wins that game, he takes the championship. Lowery advanced to the “C” semi-final with an 11-4 win over Leslie Noye and his combined Western/Silver Fox/Cornwall team Wednesday evening. Noye doubled the young Mitchell Schut foursome from Cornwall 6-3 on Wednesday afternoon to advance to the game against Lowery.

On the women’s side, it’s the young Lauren Ferguson rink from Cornwall taking on the Kaleigh Mackay foursome from Charlottetown and Montague Thursday at 11, with the winner meeting Lenentine in the “C” final at 3:30. Lenentine will win the championship if she takes that game. Ferguson came up on the winning side of two very close games on Wednesday, eliminating Cornwall clubmate Meghan Ching with a 6-5 score in the afternoon draw, stealing the last end when Ching’s final stone wrecked on a rock at the top of the house, and then went on to edge out another young Cornwall team, skipped by Alexis Burris, by an 8-7 score in the evening draw.

If either Lenentine or Gallant lose the “C” final, there will be a two-game championship round on Friday at 11 am and, if needed, 3 pm, with the “C” final winner playing off against either Lenentine or Gallant, and having to win both games to take the title, while Lenentine or Gallant would take their respective title if they won either game.

This year’s winners advance to the 2017 Canadian Junior (Under 21) Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships,  Jan.

Cornwall’s Lauren Lenentine and Devin Schut rinks playing in this morning’s A Finals at Pepsi Jrs

Two draws and the opening ceremonies took place today at the Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championships at the Montague Curling Club, and the junior men’s and women’s finalists for the first of three modified triple-knockout sections have been determined from the field of 5 junior men’s and 5 junior women’s teams. The “A” finals go at 9:30 am on Wednesday, with the Tyler Smith rink from the Charlottetown Curling Complex, which includes Cornwall member Noah O’Connor at 2nd stone, playing the Devin Schut team from Cornwall and Montague in the men’s section final, and the Kaleigh Mackay rink from Charlottetown and Montague playing the Lauren Lenentine foursome from Cornwall in the women’s “A” final.

Smith advanced with an 8-2 win over Leslie Noye, and his combined Western, Silver Fox and Cornwall team, while Schut doubled Dylan Lowery and his Montague and Silver Fox team 6-3. Mackay doubled Cornwall’s Lauren Ferguson team 12-6, while Lenentine beat Cornwall clubmate Meghan Ching 7-4 to advance.

Also squaring off this morning are Cornwall’s young Alexis Burris and Lauren Ferguson rinks, who both have a win and a loss after yesterday’s action, with Ferguson scoring a pair of triples as she won against Burris by an 8-6 score, and Burris stealing the extra end for a 7-6 win over Cornwall’s Meghan Ching in a very closely fought battle. It looked like Burris had the game sewn up in the 10th end, but her final rock slid just out of the rings, to force the extra.

The men’s B event game this morning sees the Dylan Lowery team play the Leslie Noye rink, which includes Cornwall’s Donald DeWolfe.

With the “modified” triple knockout format, teams that win the A or B sections drop down to compete in the next sections, with the section winners advancing to a two-game championship round on Friday. If a team wins all three sections, they take the championship immediately. If a team wins two sections, they have a “double life” in the two game championship round on Thursday, and win the title if they take either game, while their opponent, the other section winner, would have to win both.

The “B” finals go Wednesday at 6:30 pm, with the C finals taking place Thursday at 3:30 pm.

Live end-by-end results at: peicurling.com/scoreboard/#!/competitions/2185 and on the main page of PEICurling.com.

Visit PEICurling.com for photos from opening day.

Admission to watch the games: $3.00 per draw, or buy a Full Event Pass for $20.

The opening ceremonies took place between today’s two draws, with the teams marching in to bagpipe music, and Master of Ceremonies – Montague Club president Scott Annear introducing a number of guests, including representatives from the Town, Curl PEI, and area Member of Parliament Lawrence MacAulay.

This year’s winners advance to the 2017 Canadian Junior (Under 21) Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships,  Jan.

Island Stick Curling Tour report from the wild west!

Stick Curling
Since many of you in the central/eastern end of the province are snowbound, I thought I would send you the results of our little bonspiel yesterday.

Hope you all have power! Our precipitation was mostly in the form of rain.

The Cornwall Curling Club team of Ruth Stavert and Mary Plamondon ran away with first place, capturing 32 of a possible 34 points! I guess if we had been alert, we could have sent your winnings home with you, Mary and Ruth–there was no catching you!

Meanwhile, the Hometown Hogans–Victor and Dianne–accumulated an impressive 27 points to take second place honors.

It was a saw-off for third between Walter Callaghan and his partner Eddie Bernard vs.the Cornwall foursome of  Sterling Stratton and Barry Craswell. Don’t spend your winnings all at once fellows!

Thanks to all the curlers and we hope to see you all again soon,
– Bill Glydon

Murphy’s Ice Queen’s Women’s Funspiel wrapup

img_1274

Murphy’s Ice Queens Funspiel was held November 25th & 26, with 12 teams participating. We had one guest team from Souris and the rest of the teams were from our own club.

Matos Winery donated a beautiful basket with a bottle of chardonnay, balsamic vinegar, and some other goodies. Tickets were sold for this and we did the same as last year with a flip on “Chase the Ace” we chased the “Queen of Diamonds”’, with the lucky winner being Carol Sweetapple!!

A round-robin style schedule was used with each team playing 3 six-end games over the weekend. This lead up to an exciting finish with a tie in points between the Sweetapple and the Rhodenhizer teams. The tie was broken with a count of overall game points scored in all three games, leading to the 1st place victory for the Rhodenhizer team consisting of Debbie Rhodenhizer, Cindy Nicholson, Christine Richardson and Diana MacKay. These ladies were presented with our new Murphy’s Ice Queens Trophy and gift cards from our sponsor Murphy’s Pharmacies. Second place gift cards were awarded to the Sweetapple team consisting of Carol Sweetapple, Carolyn Crockett, Pam Sweetapple and Rebecca Rolfe. The funspiel showed its true colors by awarding the last place team with the lowest points gift cards too. Recipients of this award went to Carlene Peters, Marg Stewart, Janice Murdoch and Helen Smith. This was a fun twist that was graciously accepted by all, showing that its not always about winning!

The ladies were treated to a closing banquet catered by Alan Carmichael who prepared a lovely roast beef dinner with all the fixings. This was served to the ladies by club members Alan Mason, Angus Davies, Brent Irving, Dean MacEachern and Wade Deaken,  who all did a super job!

This event could not have been so successful without the generosity of our new sponsor Murphy’s Pharmacies, and a special thank you to Heather MacLean who let the ladies experience the Body Composition Analyzer — a great addition to the weekend. A big thank you to all those who helped out  by providing food, volunteering in the kitchen, setting up, cleaning up, and doing many other jobs. As usual, a job well-done by all!!!

Events at our club would not be so successful without the continued support of Bev our Club Manager, Lance the Iceman, Ray our Custodian , and our bartenders who for this spiel were Kelly and Debby.

Wed. Evening Ladder League Round 1 Results, Round 2 Draw/Sched

ladder2

Round One of the Wednesday Evening Ladder League, sponsored by Lowther’s Snow Removal, wrapped up last week. The Joe Callaghan rink went undefeated to win the A Pool, while the Angus Kennedy team had just one loss to capture the B pool. These teams will both receive prizes.

The Donald DeWolfe foursome with only one loss, and the Gord Peters squad, with two, are safe in the A pool, while the Ray Biagé and Lauren Ferguson rinks are going down the ladder to pool B.

The Kennedy team, along with the Greg Groves rink with 2 losses, will be moving on up to pool A. The Rachel MacLean team may have had two losses as well (neither they nor their opponents marked their score the last week), but they lost to Groves in their game, so they would stay in B either way. Kelly Watts and her team, who had three losses, along with the Rob Gallant team will remain in B as well.

Two new teams are joining us this round. They played off in a Qualifier Game on Wednesday, with the Greg Robertson team winning, and going to the A pool, while the Dave Younker rink will be in the B. The addition of two extra teams will eliminate the need for the weekly crossover game between the pools and we will use three sheets at both 6:30 and 8:30.

To recap, the A pool for next round will have the following rinks:

A1-Joe Callaghan, A2-Donald DeWolfe, A3-Gord Peters, A4-Angus Kennedy, A5-Greg Groves, A6-Greg Robertson

The B pool teams will be:

B1-Ray Biagé, B2-Lauren Ferguson, B3-Kelly Watts, B4-Rachel MacLean, B5-Rob Gallant, B6-Dave Younker

The B pool have the 6:30 timeslot on Nov. 30, as B had the late slot last week.

We will continue to use only sheets 1-3. I moved some games around for this draw to try to ensure that a team doesn’t play too many games on the same sheet, but it’s impossible to make it even for everyone with three sheets of ice.

Here is the Round Two draw, sponsored by (Pool A) Griffin’s Auto Service
and (Pool B) Cornwall Auto and Tire

Confused about curling brushes? Here’s the scoop!

Curl PEI, Curling Canada, and the World Curling Federation have recently come out with rulings and interpretations in response to the so-called “BroomGate”. Basically, it boils down to this:

Unless you are competing in a designated event, you can use any curling brush or pad that you wish. On PEI, those designated events are:

  1.       PEI U18 Championships
  2.       PEI Pepsi Juniors Championships
  3.       PEI Scotties Tournament of Hearts Women’s Championship
  4.       PEI Tankard Men’s Championship
  5.       PEI Seniors Championships
  6.       PEI Mixed Championship
  7.       PEI Travelers Curling Club Championship
  8.       PEI Mixed Doubles Championship (starting in 2017)

For normal club play and for other PEI events not specified above (or otherwise noted), you can, and may want to, use a conventional brush pad or pad cover.  The material is less expensive, will last longer, and may work better for sweeping too. If you are competing in off-Island events, be sure to check for any restrictions.

The new designated sweeping material (“Mustard Yellow Oxford 420D”) comes in yellow only, is more expensive, wears out faster, and comes with an imprinted registration number that identifies it to curling officials at the designated events.

Titre du rapport génerique

Our Pro Shop has a wide variety of brush pads, and Hardline brush pad covers for regular and for designated event play. Of course, if you are sweeping with an older brush, you may not be able to find a compatible brush pad compliant with the designated events. You may also have to replace the  brush head or even buy a new brush. Our “Performance” brush pads are compliant with most recent heads from other companies such as Goldline and Balance Plus, but may not fit older models. We also have brush heads that will fit on almost any handle. The Hardline brush heads come with an adapter sleeve to fit “fatter” handles.

Best thing to do is bring your brush to the Club to find the best solution to your needs.

By the way, to save on wear and tear, our Club brushes are designated for rental use only, and we charge a small fee for their use in the 2nd half of the season. Our Club members are expected to have their own brushes. If you have been using a Club brush, be sure to ask Santa for a brush of your own for Christmas. We feature quality, Canadian-made products from great companies such as Hardline, Performance Brush, and Balance Plus. If we don’t have it in stock, we can bring it in for you.

Murphy’s Pharmacies Ice Queens Funspiel wraps up with dinner, prizes

The Ice Queens Women’s Funspiel, with 12 teams and new sponsor Murphy’s Pharmacies, wrapped up late this afternoon with a banquet and the presentation of prizes. Here’s a photo of the handsome servers for the banquet:

Now on to the prizes.

Carol Sweetapple (left) took home the door prize of a basket of wine (and other goodies) from Matos Winery, only ten minutes from the Club, at 3156 West River Rd, in St. Catherines. Organizer Lisa MacEachern is on the right.

The curling prizes started with something called the “Legend Losers” award. No explanation was provided, so I’ll leave that to your imagination. The “winners” of this prestigious honour were the team of (L-R): Margaret Stewart, Helen Smith, Carlene Peters, and Janice Murdoch.

Next up: the runners-up. The silver medals (or white envelopes!) go to the team of (R-L): Carol Sweetapple, Carolyn Crockett,: Pam Sweetapple, and Rebecca Rolfe.

Finally, it was time to announce the winners. Taking home the crystal trophy (and more white envelopes) were the rink of  (L-R) Debbie Rhodenhizer, Cindy Nicholson, Christine Richardson, and Diana MacKay.

Thanks to the 12 teams who participated, to bonspiel committee chairs Lisa MacEachern and Darlene Howlett, to the many others who helped out, including Angela and Kimberley from the Board, to the men who helped with serving and cleanup, to Club staff and volunteers, and a special thanks to Heather MacLean and title sponsor Murphy’s Pharmacies, as well as others, including Matos Wineries, who donated prizes. If you missed out on this fun event this year, mark it on your calendar for next fall!

N. Ont. wins gold at 2017 Canadian Mixed Ch’ship, Cornwall’s Veronica Smith finishes 4th in Seeding Pool with 3-6 overall record (Curling Canada)

It was a result that skip Trevor Bonot didn’t plan for, but it was a result that, for all intents and purposes, put a Team Canada jacket on the 31-year-old skip from Thunder Bay.

With Manitoba counting first and third shot and Bonot’s Northern Ontario foursome holding last rock in the fifth end of the 2017 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship gold-medal game Saturday at the Mariners Centre in Yarmouth, N.S., Bonot unfurled a big-weight outturn, hoping to score two and possibly three — anything more was cross-your-fingers territory.

When the dust settled, Bonot and his teammates — vice-skip (and sister) Jackie McCormick, second Kory Carr and lead Megan Carr — from the Port Arthur Curling Club saw four of their yellow stones counting to break open what had been a tight game for four ends.

It was more than enough to propel Bonot and Co. to a 5-2 win over Manitoba’s Braden Calvert to claim the 2017 national championship and give Northern Ontario its fourth Canadian mixed crown, and first since Chris Johnson’s 1997 triumph in Kindersley, Sask.

“As long as we got the right drag effect (from the way the rocks collided with each other), the fourth point was there,” said a happy Bonot after the final. “The fourth point was a bonus, but it was definitely make-able. It’s a crucial turning point; when you’re in a final against such a great team, and you have a shot like that to make the momentum come your way, it’s a game-changer.”

Northern Ontario finished round-robin play with an 8-2 record, and dispatched Saskatchewan’s Brady Scharback 5-4 in the semifinal earlier on Saturday.

Manitoba, meanwhile, had reached the final with a 4-2 win over previously unbeaten Wayne Tuck Jr. of Ontario in the other semifinal and, based on shooting percentages over the first half of the game, had the hotter hand going into the decisive fifth end.

But, as Bonot proved, timing is everything in the sport of curling.

“Actually, the goal in the fifth end was to get a blank (and have hammer likely in the sixth and eighth ends), and a couple of misses from both teams and something came from it,” he said. “It’s surreal; it still hasn’t sunk in yet. We came here hoping to have a good week and some good games, and we’ve had an amazing week and some amazing games.”

As a result, the Northern Ontario team will now become Team Canada for the 2017 World Mixed Curling Championship, Oct. 6-14 in Champéry, Switzerland. Canada will be looking for its first trip to the medal podium after falling short in the first two editions of the World Mixed.

“You play a lot of games and take a lot of knocks over the years, losing some provincial finals and not quite getting there, and life happens,” said Bonot. “To have a chance to get to a national championship with my sister at third and my best friend playing front end with me means a lot. I never thought it would happen.

“It’s a dream come true to be Team Canada. I’d be very happy to bring a world championship back to Thunder Bay.”

It was a silver medal for Calvert, third Kerri Einarson, second Kyle Einarson and lead Jennifer Clark-Rouire, representing the Gimli Curling Club.

In the bronze-medal game, Team Ontario (Tuck, vice-skip Kimberly Tuck, second Jake Higgs, lead Sara Gatchell) scored two in an extra end for a 6-4 win over Saskatchewan.

The Seeding Pool wrapped up on Friday afternoon, with Robert Smallwood (Yukon), Wes Craig (B.C.), and Evan Asmussen (Alberta) taking the top three spots, followed by Veronica Smith (Prince Edward Island), Ed MacDonald (Nunavut) and Donovan Arey (Northwest Territories). PEI finished play with a 3-6 cumulative win-loss record in the Round Robin and Seeding Pool.

Another season of Stick Curling underway on PEI (CBC)

Stick curling — a variation of curling that has players use a stick that attaches to the handle of the curling rock — continues to gain traction in P.E.I.

“We are doing pretty good for the little old Island, we do damn good,” said stick curler Bob Leard from Montague. “It’s great exercise for us older guys who like to curl.”

“To stick curl is just as hard as to regular curl, because as … you have to think all the way through the game. It’s a two-man team and that’s it. I feel that it’s more of a challenge,” he said.

‘The competitive part is a bonus’

This week, stick curling teams from Alberton, O’Leary, Cornwall and Montague all met in Montague for a one hour game.

“We have some teams that are quite competitive and we’ve won Maritimes championships and actually won a national championship,” said Ernie Stavert, president of Stick Curling P.E.I.

“The purpose is to keep people in the game as a recreation, but the competitive part is a bonus.”

More players wanted

The number of people playing the sport on P.E.I. has been increasing slowly over the years, but the numbers fluctuate year over year at the different curling clubs.

Cornwall always seems to come out on top, with the number of stick curlers increasing steadily.

The popularity of stick curling continues to grow in P.E.I. (Randy McAndrew/CBC)

“Hopefully it will increase as people age, and try to stay active. Hopefully there’s a positive future for stick curling.”
