Two rinks, the defending champion Donald Clarey men’s team from the host Montague Curling Club, and last years’s women’s runner-up rink, the Marie Ford rink from the Crapaud Community Curling Club remain undefeated following Friday play at the PEI The Dominion Curling Club Championship. The Clarey team includes third Larry Richards, second David Rice, and lead Steven MacLeod, while Julie Mutch, Vivian Holm, and Heather MacRae complete the Ford rink.
In the Friday evening draw, Clarey scored three points in the final end to hand the Alan Inman team from Crapaud their first loss with a 6-5 come-from-behind win to sit at 4-0, with Inman at 3-1. Clarey led 3-0 after 5 ends, but Inman took a triple in the sixth and stole a deuce in seven to bring a two point lead into the last end, but Clarey came back with the triple for the win. The Bob Fowler rink from Cornwall, the Blair Jay squad from the Silver Fox, and the Daryl MacDonald team from the Western Community club in Alberton all have one win against two losses, while Charlottetown’s Pat Birtwistle rink are winless in three starts.
The Ford foursome won 9-5 this evening over Rushell MacDonald and her Western team to go to 3-0 in the women’s division. The defending champion Lorianne Davies rink from Cornwall came from behind with 4 points in the final end to pick up their first win, by a 9-7 score, and hand the Gail Greene team from the host club their first loss tonight. Greene is tied with Nola Murphy and her Silver Fox rink for second place with 2-1 records, after Murphy blanked Charlottetown’s Cathy MacDougall team 8-0 tonight. Davies and MacDonald are 1-2, while MacDougall is 0-3.
Round robin play wraps up on Saturday, with draws at 10 am and 2 and 6 pm. Tiebreakers, if needed, go Sunday at 10, with the semi-finals between the second and third place teams going that afternoon at 2, and the finals, between the semi winner and the first place team from the round robin, taking place Sunday at 6 pm. In the event that no tiebreakers are required, the semis will move to 10 am and the finals to 2 pm.
The winning rinks will advance to the national The Dominion, November 19-24 at the Scarboro Golf and Country Club in Scarborough Ont.
