Jones (NS with Cornwall’s Lenentine), Smith (Ch’town) battle to wins in Draw 3, Cornwall’s Ferguson now 0-2, at New Holland Juniors (Curling Canada)

Nova Scotia skip Kaitlyn Jones may have her eyes on a second straight national Junior title but she had her hands full with a feisty Saskatchewan Host team in Draw 3 of the 2019 New Holland Junior Curling Championships in Prince Albert, Sask., on Saturday night.

Jones and her team of Lauren Lenentine, Karlee Burgess, Lindsey Burgess and coach Andrew Atherton stole a couple of points to lead 3-1 at the break over Skylar Ackerman of Moose Jaw. (Ackerman is the skip of a second Saskatchewan team added to the women’s draw to keep numbers even after Yukon did not send a women’s team to the championship.)

With the score 3-2 after eight, the defending champions stole three in the ninth to take a 6-2 win in their first game of the round robin.

In other Draw 3 women’s action, British Columbia’s Sarah Daniels notched her second win of the day, cruising to a 12-3 win over Ontario’s Thea Coburn.

B.C. third Kayla MacMillan is at her first national junior championship and she says the experience has been positive so far.

“This is my first Junior, and (lead) Sarah Loken’s as well,” MacMillan said after Saturday night’s game. “And it’s just been exactly what we hoped it would be. Our families are all here. it’s great playing in front of an actual crowd and the ice is great.”

MacMillan moved to B.C. from Ontario, so playing against her “home” team was fun.

“Calissa (Day) on the team – I actually won the Little Rocks championship with her, and Kaitlyn Jones from Nova Scotia, so there’s three of us now playing for different provinces,” she said.

The 2018 silver medallist, Laurie St-Georges, of Laval, Que., stole the first three ends on the way to a 7-1 win over Tyanna Bain of Inuvik, N.T.

In a tight battle, Manitoba’s Mackenzie Zacharias handed Saskatchewan’s Sara England her first loss. Leading 4-3 after seven, the skip from Winnipeg’s Elmwood Curling Club stole a deuce in the eighth and another in the ninth for an 8-3 win.

Steals also factored heavily in a 9-4 win for Newfoundland and Labrador’s Mackenzie Glynn over P.E.I.’s Lauren Ferguson.

In men’s action, 2018 champion Tyler Tardi and his B.C. foursome took complete control in a 14-1 win over Nunavut’s Javen Komaksiutiksak, while Manitoba’s JT Ryan won his second game of the day with a 9-2 score over Northwest Territories’ Sawer Kaeser.

A high-scoring ten-end battle between P.E.I. and Quebec ended with a 9-7 win for Tyler Smith of the Charlottetown Curling Club over Vincent Roberge of the Etchemin Curling Club

Rylan Kleiter and his team from the Sutherland Curling Club in Saskatoon kept the home-province fans happy with a solid 8-2 win over Ontario’s Samuel Steep of the Galt Country Club.

“Our team played solid and we were fortunate to get some misses (from Ontario), but I think we were expecting it to be a little closer, for sure,” said Kleiter after the team’s second win of the day. “Ontario always sends a strong contending team, and we were expecting them to play well so our mindset going in was just to stay with the process and take it shot by shot and try to grind out another win.”

“I thought our energy early on was up,” he said about the possible difference in the two teams’ approach tonight. “I thought we had a little bit more intensity, so yeah, our front end played well and we just tried to put the pressure on.”

The Saskatchewan foursome are earning some style points as well with their colourful curling pants.

“Five years ago when we brought Trevor (Johnson) on the team, he had the idea and showed us the website. We thought it was pretty cool. And back then it was a junior league kind of thing and we’ve stuck with them ever since,” said Kleiter. “And they do bring a little good luck. We found that they’d help keep the game a little loose. Just adds a little fun, for sure.”

The round robin continues on Sunday with three draws at 11 a.m., 4 p.m., and 9 p.m. AT.

New Holland Canadian Juniors underway in Prince Albert – Cornwall’s Ferguson rink loses opener to NB (Curling Canada)

British Columbia’s Tyler Tardi kicked off his campaign to win a third straight national title as the 2019 New Holland Canadian Juniors got underway today in Prince Albert, Sask.

Tardi and third Sterling Middleton have two consecutive national and world championships behind them, and this year they’ve brought a new front end to help keep the streak alive. Matthew Hall, playing second, joins the team after relocating from Ontario – Hall skipped the Ontario team that lost to Tardi in the 2017 gold-medal game. Alex Horvath takes over the lead position, with Paul Tardi, Tyler’s dad, as coach.

In the opening draw, the B.C. foursome had no problem overpowering Trygg Jensen of the Yukon, scoring four in the eighth to cruise to a 10-2 win.

Also in the win column in the opening draw was Northern Ontario’s Tanner Horgan, making his sixth consecutive appearance at the national Junior championships. Horgan, who lost the final to Tardi last year, needed a deuce in the final end to defeat Graeme Weagle of Chester, Nova Scotia, 7-6 in the opening draw. Weagle, the gold-medallist at the 2018 Under-18 Nationals, is taking his first crack at an Under-21 national title.

The 2018 bronze medallist, Manitoba’s J.T. Ryan, backed by third Jacques Gauthier and a new front end of Jordan Peters and Cole Chandler, also started the round robin with a win, defeating Quebec’s Vincent Roberge, 6-3.

In women’s action, the 2018 bronze medallist from New Brunswick, Justine Cormier, got off to a slow start in the opening draw with a 7-3 loss to Quebec’s Laurie St-Georges in a rematch of last year’s women’s semifinal. But Cormier and her Fredericton team of Emma Le Blanc, Brigitte Comeau, Keira McLaughlin, alternate Erica Cluff and coach Tim Comeau bounced back on Saturday afternoon with a 9-5 win over Prince Edward Island’s Lauren Ferguson.

Also in women’s Draw 2 action, British Columbia’s Sarah Daniels, hoping to improve on her 2016 silver medal, started strong by winning her first game 14-0 over Nunavut’s Sadie Pinksen. Selena Sturmay led Alberta to a 10-3 win over Northern Ontario’s Kira Brunton, the 2018 Under-18 champion. Saskatchewan’s Sarah England, daughter of famed Canadian curler Sandra Schmirler, skipped her Saskatchewan foursome to a 10-5 victory over Newfoundland and Labrador’s Mackenzie Glynn.

Action continued in men’s and women’s play on Saturday (9:30 p.m. AT) at both the Art Hauser Centre and the Prince Albert Golf & Curling Club.

Smith team, including Cornwall member Ryan Abraham, and Cornwall’s Ferguson rink ready for Canadian junior ch’ships (Journal)

SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. – Two P.E.I. curling rinks will take different levels of experience onto the national stage in Saskatchewan.

Tyler Smith, 20, will skip a veteran and experienced men’s rink out of the Charlottetown Curling Complex, and the Lauren Ferguson-skipped women’s team from the Cornwall Curling Club will be making its debut in the New Holland Canadian junior championships, which begin Saturday and run through to Jan. 27, in Prince Albert.

From left: Robbie Doherty, Ryan Lowery, Alex MacFadyen, Ryan Abraham, Tyler Smith

“All of these guys on my team have been to at least one (national), if not two,” said Smith, who is attending his fifth Canadian juniors and third as a skip after playing third for New Brunswick in 2018. “We all have the knowledge of what it takes to be a top three, four, five team.”

“We understand how much training goes into it, how much work you have to put towards it and the amount of focus you need out there. You also need to have a good time, and you have to have that happy balance.

Smith’s teammates are third Ryan Abraham, 19; second Alex MacFadyen, 20, and lead Ryan Lowery, 18. Smith does not hide the fact the Robbie Doherty-coached squad has high goals.

“Our primary goal is to finish top five, and our secondary goal is to make the playoffs.”

First time

The Canadian juniors start a busy stretch for the Ferguson rink, which recently earned the right to represent P.E.I. in women’s curling at the 2019 Canada Games in February.

Left to right: Lauren Ferguson, Katie Shaw, Alexis Burris, Lexie Murray

Although this will be the Ferguson rink’s first time at the junior nationals, the team members have previous experience at a Canadian championship. They posted a respectable 3-3 record at the 2018 Canadian under-18 event in St. Andrews, N.B.

“We know there will be a lot of really good teams out there,” said Ferguson, a 16-year-old Grade 11 student at Kensington Intermediate-Senior High School.

Other members of the youthful Ferguson rink, which is in its second year playing together, are third Katie Shaw, 16; second Alexis Burris, 17, and lead Lexie Murray, 16.

“The big thing for us will be going to experience it and be able to use that experience in the future and at the Canada Games.”

COUNTDOWN TO THE GAMES: Cornwall’s women’s curling team gearing up (Guardian)

P.E.I. squad has busy few weeks before representing province at Canada Games in Alberta

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – The flight to Red Deer, Alta., is fast approaching for Team P.E.I.’s women’s curling team.

The Lauren Ferguson-skipped rink from Cornwall, Crapaud and Charlottetown will represent the Island at the 2019 Canada Games in Red Deer, Alta. Team members are, from left, Ferguson, third Katie Shaw, second Alexis Burris, lead Lexie Murray and coach David Murphy. – Contributed

With about five weeks before they hit the ice against the rest of the country, skip Lauren Ferguson and her teammates are prepping almost every day. Alexis Burris, Lexie Murray and Katie Shaw, along with Ferguson, went 2-1 in Moncton during the weekend in their latest installment of pre-Games action.

They also represented P.E.I. at the under-18 nationals in St. Andrews, N.B. in April. The tournament showcased several teams Team P.E.I. will see at the Games, which provided a level of confidence heading into the recent pre-Games tournament in Moncton.

Coach David Murphy is optimistic about the next several weeks, knowing all the hard work from the last two years will start to pay dividends.

While at the Games, the team’s clear goal is to qualify for the playoff round. If successful in achieving this feat, the group knows anything can happen. Murphy describes the team morale as a significant part of their optimistic chances at the Games.
“They are very upbeat, confident and supportive of each other. It’s a team sport, and they are very aware of that.”
He talked about how the parents have led by example, providing an immense amount of support to the team.
“We wouldn’t be here without the team (member’s) parents.”

We are very lucky to have Kenmac Energy as our sponsor for this annual event. Their generosity is very much appreciated by all who participate! And we encourage all Cornwall Curling Club members to consider Kenmac for all their home heating needs, as well as Mel’s, Country Style and Thai Express for their gas and snacking.

Big thanks to many of our members for the help with lots of tasks such as taking registration, announcing, scorekeeping, selling tickets, providing/prepping food, kitchen duty, setting/cleaning up etc. Also thanks to Bev our club manager, Lance the “Ice Man” along with Danny and Brent for doing an amazing job keeping our ice in great shape! And a huge thanks as well to Ray, our custodian and our bartenders for the weekend, Kelley and Al. All these things help make the Kenmac Energy Mix Funspiel a very successful event!

Cornwall’s Lauren Ferguson rink, plus Lauren Lenentine on defending champ. NS team, in New Holland Canadian Juniors, starting Sat. (Curling Canada)

Three players will head to Prince Albert, Sask., with a chance to make history at the 2019 New Holland Canadian Junior Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships.

Both gold-medal teams are back from the 2018 event to attempt to defend their titles at the 2019 New Holland Canadian Juniors. And Tyler Tardi (back row, left), Sterling Middleton (back row, second from left) and Karlee Burgess (front row, third from left) have a chance to become the first three-time Canadian junior champions. (Photo, Curling Canada/Michael Burns)

The Canadian Under-21 Championships kick off Saturday at the Art Hauser Centre and the Prince Albert Golf and Curling Club.

Tyler Tardi and Sterling Middleton of the B.C. men’s team, and Karlee Burgess of the Nova Scotia women’s team, can become the first players in the history of the championships to win three times, with Tardi and Middleton having the opportunity to win all three in succession, after winning in 2017 at Victoria, B.C., and last year in Shawinigan, Que., while Burgess’s victories came in 2016 at Stratford, Ont., and last year in Shawinigan.

All three players ended last season as world champions with their victories at the 2018 World Junior Curling Championships in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Tardi and Middleton, the skip and vice-skip respectively for the B.C. team representing the Langley and Victoria Curling Clubs, are joined by a new front end this season, with second Matthew Hall having moved from Ontario, and Alex Horvath taking over at lead (Paul Tardi, Tyler’s dad, remains at coach). Hall’s Ontario team lost to Tardi’s B.C. team in the 2017 gold-medal game in Victoria.

Burgess, meanwhile, is at her familiar second position on the Nova Scotia team from Halifax skipped by Kaitlyn Jones, with Burgess’s cousin Lindsey at lead. New vice-skip Lauren Lenentine replaces the aged-out Kristin Clarke. Karlee Burgess and coach Andrew Atherton are the hold-overs from the 2016 Nova Scotia team, skipped by Mary Fay, that won Canadian and world junior gold.

[Besides Cornwall Curling Club member Lenentine, PEI will be represented by the Lauren Ferguson team, also from Cornwall, and the Tyler Smith rink from the Charlottetown Curling Complex. Summerside’s Alex Gallant is on the New Brunswick junior men’s team, skipped by Jack Smeltzer out of the Capital Winter Club in Fredericton.]

There will be no shortage of championship experience in Prince Albert; Tanner Horgan’s Northern Ontario team (Sudbury), which lost to Tardi in the final last year, and to Manitoba’s Matt Dunstone in the 2016 final, with a 2017 bronze medal in between is back; his younger brother Jake, who throws third rocks, skipped Northern Ontario to the 2017 Canadian Under-18 title.

The gold-medallist at the 2018 Under-18 Nationals, Nova Scotia’s  Graeme Weagle (Chester), is taking his first crack at an Under-21 national title.

On the women’s side, 2017 Canadian U-18 winner Kira Brunton (Sudbury) is in the field representing Northern Ontario, as is 2018 U-18 runner-up Skyler Ackerman, who is skipping the Saskatchewan Host team from Moose Jaw.

B.C.’s Sarah Daniels will be back, looking to improve on the silver medal she won at the 2016 Canadian Juniors, where she lost the final to Nova Scotia’s Fay team.

And for good measure, the Saskatchewan champion women’s team skipped by Sara England (Regina; daughter of 1998 Olympic gold-medallist Sandra Schmirler) is coached by 1983 Canadian Junior Men’s champ Jamie Schneider.

For the first time, selected round-robin games from the New Holland Canadian Junior Championships will be streamed live at Curling Canada’s Facebook page, which you can access by CLICKING HERE.

Fourteen men’s and 14 women’s teams will compete for Canadian titles, separated into two seven-team pools per gender for an initial round robin, followed by a Championship Round (top four in each pool) leading to the playoffs. The top team advances to its respective final on Sunday, Jan. 27, while the second- and third-place teams meet in a semifinal on Saturday, Jan. 26, to determine the other finalist.

TSN/RDS2 will carry complete live coverage of the semifinals (women at 1 p.m. [all times CT], men at 7 p.m.) on Jan. 26 and finals (women at 10 a.m., men at 3 p.m.), held at the Art Hauser Centre.

The winning teams will then represent Canada on home ice at the 2019 World Junior  Championships, Feb. 16-23 in Liverpool N.S. Canada has won a leading 19 world junior men’s titles since 1975 and a leading 12 women’s crowns since 1988.

The 2019 New Holland Canadian Juniors also is notable for the number of past recipients of the Curling Canada Foundation For The Love of Curling Scholarships — 17 over the past three years:

2018 — Tanner Horgan (Northern Ontario), Kaitlyn Jones (Nova Scotia), Ryan Lamswood (Newfoundland/Labrador), Dustin Mikush (Alberta), Kate Sherry (Northern Ontario), Selena Sturmay (Alberta)

2017 — Kira Brunton (Northern Ontario), Sarah Daniels (British Columbia), Sara Guy (Northern Ontario), Sarah Hoag (Saskatchewan), Megan Smith (Northern Ontario), Mackenzie Zacharias (Manitoba)

2016 — Karlee Burgess (Nova Scotia), Jessica Humphries (B.C.), Sterling Middleton (B.C.), Tyler Tardi (B.C.), Maxime Blais (Northern Ontario)

Saskatchewan will have three teams in the field with the added Host team on the women’s side due to the Yukon not sending a team. On the men’s side, Saskatoon’s Rylan Kleiter team will be carrying the home-province hopes. Saskatchewan has won 14 Canadian junior men’s titles (behind only Alberta with 16), the latest by Braeden Moskowy in 2011 at Calgary. Saskatchewan women’s teams have won a leading 11 gold medals, the most recent by Trish Paulsen to complete a Saskatchewan sweep in 2011.

Teams that don’t qualify for the Championship Pool will compete in a Seeding Pool to determine rankings for the 2020 New Holland Canadian Juniors (dates, location, TBA). Curlers on all non-playoff teams will participate in a mixed doubles competition on the final weekend.

The Canadian Junior Men?s Championship has been contested annually since its inception in 1950 at Quebec City. The first Canadian Junior Women?s Championship was played in 1971 at Vancouver.

Cornwall teams finish with 2-1 win-loss records at Maritime Pre-Canada Games event in Moncton

PEI’s representatives at the 2019 Canada Games, skipped by Lauren Ferguson and Mitchell Schut from the Cornwall Curling Club, along with New Brunswick’s Erica Cluff team from the Woodstock Golf and Country Club, finished play with 2-1 win-loss records at the Pre-Canada Winter Games event which took place Saturday and Sunday at Curl Moncton, featuring the junior men’s and women’s Canada Games teams from the three Maritime provinces. The other three teams in the event finished at 1-2.

Both PEI teams lost their only game to Cluff (each team plays one team of the opposite sex, and Schut happened to play Cluff, losing 7-6 in an extra end). Schut beat the Ethan Young team from Halifax 8-3 and scored a deuce in the final end to get by New Brunswick’s Emmanual Porter team 6-5:

Ferguson doubled New Brunswick’s Cally Moore 6-3 in her opener, but struggled with the ice on Saturday morning, losing 9-2 to Cluff, but went on to score a triple in the final end of her afternoon game to edge the Ethan Young junior men’s team from Halifax 7-6.

Birt claims her 10th PEI Scotties, team will represent PEI in Sydney NS (Journal)

ALBERTON — The year was 2003 when Suzanne (Gaudet) Birt first skipped a team to the P.E.I. Scotties provincial women’s curling championship title. On Sunday the veteran women’s skip, and 2001 world junior curling champion, skipped a team to the P.E.I. Scotties title for a tenth time.

Skip Suzanne Birt, standing left, and her mate, Marie Christianson, look on as Veronica Smith directs her sweepers. Birt downed Smith 10-4 in the championship final of the P.E.I. Scotties provincial women’s curling championship Sunday afternoon at the Western Community Curling Club.

Birt and her Mitchell O’Shea coached team of Marie Christianson, mate; Meaghan Hughes, second, and Michelle McQuaid, lead, from the Charlottetown Curling Complex downed the Veronica Smith rink from the Cornwall Curling Club 10-4 in a game conceded after eight ends.

Jane DiCarlo, Sabrina Smith and Whitney Jenkins round out the runner-up rink from the modified triple knock out championship event which got underway at the Western Community Curling Club Wednesday during a snowstorm.

On Sunday afternoon, Birt opened with a first-end single. After Smith tied it in the second, Birt responded with back-to-back deuces. She led 5-2 at the fifth-end break. She scored three in the sixth and stole two in the seventh to go up 10-2, and Smith conceded after scoring a pair in the eighth.

Birt said she couldn’t take the early lead for granted. “Every end, you have to keep on your game. With the five-rock rule, you know any team can score a big end and get right back into it.”

“It’s been a great week,” said Birt during the presentations. “A lot of good curling, a lot of great teams here.” She thanked her team for their hard work and for making it fun.

“Congratulations to Team Birt, you’re going to do awesome,” said Smith who also acknowledged her own team for playing hard throughout the five-day event.

Birt said the Alberton ice with its limited curl proved challenging but she felt her team managed it well.

She’s optimistic as she prepares for the Scotties Tournament of Hearts where her team will represent P.E.I. in Sydney, NS from Feb. 16 to 24.

“You know what, if we play like I think we can play, we’ll have a very good week in Sydney and we should be there at the end of the week.”

Suzanne Birt beats Cornwall’s Veronica Smith 10-4 to win her tenth Scotties

The Suzanne Birt rink from the Charlottetown Curling Complex, which includes two members of her 2016 winning team, third Marie Christianson, and second Meaghan Hughes, along with lead Michelle McQuaid, captured the PEI Scotties Provincial Women’s Curling Championship Sunday afternoon at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton, with a 10-4 win over Cornwall’s Veronica Smith foursome. This is Birt’s 10th provincial women’s championship — she won her first in 2003. Hughes and McQuaid were also on the 2017 and 2018 winning teams, skipped by Robyn MacPhee.

Smith won the “A” Qualifier of the modified triple knockout draw, with Sarah Fullerton winning the “B” and Birt capturing the “C”. Smith had a bye to the final by virtue of playing in all three section qualifiers, so Fullerton and Birt played off in the Sunday morning semi-final, with Birt, helped out by a three-point fifth end, winning 7-6.

In the final, Birt stole a single in the first end, and kept Smith to one point in the second. Birt scored a deuce in the third, and stole another pair in the fourth end for a 5-1 lead, with Smith taking a single in the fifth. Birt came out strong after the 5th end break, taking a triple in the sixth and stealing a deuce in the seventh end for a big 10-2 lead. Smith took a deuce in the eighth, but it was handshake time with a 10-4 final score.

The winning Suzanne Birt rink will now advance to the national Scotties in Sydney NS:

John Likely wins Tankard PEI men’s title, Suzanne Birt to play Cornwall’s Veronica Smith in 2 pm Scotties final

There’s no need for a 2 pm game in the PEI Tankard, as John Likely and his team from Charlottetown and the host Western Community curling club in Alberton were able to steal a 10th end single to edge defending champion Eddie MacKenzie and his Charlottetown team by a 6-5 score this morning to win the provincial men’s championship. As Likely had won two of the three modified-knockout draw sections, a win in either game today would have given him the title, while MacKenzie would have needed to win both. The Likely squad, who were runners-up last year, includes third Anson Carmody, second Steve Burgess and lead Robbie Doherty, with alternate Matthew Nabuurs. Third Tyler MacKenzie, second Christopher Gallant, and lead Sean Ledgerwood round out the Eddie MacKenzie finalist team, which is coached by Philip Gorveatt.

Meanwhile, Charlottetown’s Suzanne Birt will get a chance to compete for her 10th PEI Scotties women’s title, as she takes on Cornwall’s Veronica Smith, who is seeking her first Scotties trophy, in the provincial women’s final at 2 pm. Smith who won the A section of the modified triple knockout round, earned a bye to the final by virtue of playing in all three section qualifiers, while the other section winners, Birt, and Sarah Fullerton from the Charlottetown and Silver Fox clubs, squared off in this morning’s semi-final, with Birt winning 7-6, aided by a 5th end triple.

Cornwall’s Veronica Smith rink advances to PEI women’s final, as Sunday Scotties/Tankard playoffs begin

There will be three teams competing in the PEI Scotties women’s championship round on Sunday at 9 am, and 2 pm at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton, and two rinks in the Men’s round at the same time.

The Veronica Smith team from Cornwall, who won the A Qualifying game of the modified triple knockout draw, has earned a bye to the 2 pm final game of the Scotties, having played in the A, B. and C Qualifying games, The B Qualifier winner, Sarah Fullerton and her team from the Charlottetown Curling Complex and the Silver Fox Curling Club in Summerside, along with the C winner, Suzanne Birt of Charlottetown, who beat Smith 9-7 in the Saturday evening C Qualifier, will square off in the 9 am game, with the winner advancing to the  2 pm final against Smith.

On the men’s side, last year’s runner-up John Likely, who lists Charlottetown and Western as his team’s curling clubs, will play in both playoff games, having two chances to win the Tankard, as, having won the A and the C Qualifiers, he can win the event if he takes either game, while his opponent, B section winner and defending champion Eddie MacKenzie, has to win both. Likely only needed six ends to dispose of Summerside’s Darren Higgins rink and capture the “C” Qualifier on Saturday evening.

Play gets underway at 5 this afternoon and continues on Sunday as PEI’s games teams, skipped by Cornwall’s Mitchell Schut and Lauren Ferguson, take on their New Brunswick and Nova Scotia counterparts at Curl Moncton in a Pre-Canada Games event.

The purpose of this event is to prepare each province’s respective teams in advance of the Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alberta. With that in mind, they will be trying to mimic as much of that event as possible. Each team will have three games using the five-rock rule. Games will be eight ends with 30 minutes of thinking time. Cornwall’s Smith to face Morrow in PEI Scotties “A” qualifier after long day of curling for both teams (Journal)

ALBERTON — It will be Veronica Smith and her team from the Cornwall Curling Club who will face Melissa Morrow and her Silver Fox Curling Club rink in the “A” Qualifier of the P.E.I. Scotties Provincial Women’s Curling Championships, Thursday at 2 p.m

Skip Veronica Smith reacts as her rock nears the house. She stitched together a pair of wins Wednesday, the opening day of the P.E.I. Scotties. – Eric McCarthy

Smith downed the Sarah Fullerton team from the Charlottetown and Silver Fox clubs 7-5 Wednesday night at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton.

It was the end of a very long day for the two teams who played in the opening draw at 9 a.m. and then waited through storm delays before meeting each other in Draw 3 at 9 p.m.

Fullerton went up 2-1 after four ends before Smith rebounded with one in the fifth and a stolen deuce after the break. Fullerton cut the lead to 4-3 in the seventh and then the teams traded deuces over the next two ends, leaving Smith with hammer heading home and clinging to a 6-5 lead.

CURL PEI – 2018/19 Curling Club Championships Eligibility Requirements

We trust that all participants will respect the intent of this championship for curling clubs to engage their members to participate and represent their curling club at a regional competition which leads to the provincial / territorial championship and ultimately the national curling club championships.
The event was created for true club-based teams. The objective is to support the development of grassroots curling across Canada.

With this objective in mind, here are the eligibility requirements for events leading to the November 2019 national curling club championships. Curling Canada reserves the right to exclude any team that violates the spirit and intent of this event as it pertains to the rules below:

1) The curling club represented by each team, must be affiliated with Curl PEI, must be in good standing with all applicable dues paid in full.
2) Players of any club team must be members in good standing of the affiliated curling club.
3) Any competitor is not required to be a Canadian citizen.
4) All four (4) members and any alternates must be bona fide residents within PEI unless granted an exception by Curl PEI.
5) Any player can be a member of more than one affiliated curling club, but must declare one “home club” for this competition.
6) Curl PEI is limiting the number of teams qualifying from each club to one per gender.
7) Teams must qualify under one of the following conditions:
   (a) Regular league players, or;
   (b) A club championship process, or;
   (c) A designated Curling Club Championship event within the club;
   (d) In each of Rule 7) (a)(b)(c), teams must have three (3) or more players who have played together in a sanctioned club league during the current curling season.
   (e) Clubs that only have mixed or open leagues (i.e., no men’s and / or women’s set team leagues) may be granted an exemption to Rule (6)(d) by written request to Curl PEI.
8) The use of the delivery stick by any or all four players (and any alternate) IS acceptable subject to the Curling Canada rules under Rule 19. Curling With A Delivery Stick.
9) Once a four-person team enters the club championships playdowns, a maximum of one (1) replacement player from the club is allowed.
10) The replacement player must play the lead position (throwing & sweeping) and must be an active member in good standing of the affiliated curling club.
11) Teams who play exclusively in a major / super league – where teams from more than one club compete – are ineligible for the Curling Club Championships unless the team competes in another eligible league in an affiliated club.
12) Each four-person team is allowed one (1) player:
   (a) Who has played in any named Curling Canada event* in any season (regardless of finish) or,
   (b) Who has played in a Tier 1 Grand Slam event in any season (regardless of finish).
For example: Craig Savill plays in a Wednesday night league with three friends but he also represented Ontario last season at the Brier with his elite team. Craig and his Wednesday night team of friends would be eligible for the Curling Club Championships;
However, the other three (3) team members of Craig’s Wednesday team cannot
have played in the following:
(i) Any Tier 1 Grand Slam event in the current season and the past two (2) seasons.
(ii) Any Canada event* in the current season and the previous two (2) seasons.
* Curling Canada events include: Canada Cup, Juniors, Tournament of Hearts, Brier, Seniors.
*NOTE* In 2019/2020 Curling Canada events will include: Mixed, Canada Cup, Juniors,
Tournament of Hearts, Brier, Seniors, Mixed Doubles, University, College, and Under 18.
13) Alternate players at the Brier, Tournament of Hearts or any Curling Canada event are considered
as having not to have played in those events.
14) Players who won the 2018 Curl PEI Curling Club Championships are ineligible to compete this
season at any level.
15) Each team is comprised of a minimum of three (3) players that are a minimum of 19 years of
age or over as of June 30th the year prior to the national championship. For example, a player
must be 19 years of age on June 30th, 2019 for the November 2019 National Curling Club
Championship.
16) Any team is allowed one (1) player under 19 years of age whom shall be considered a “minor” and must be accompanied by a legal guardian (or a chaperone identified by the legal guardian) for the duration of the event including departure from home and return to their home. A legal guardian can be a parent on the team. The team is responsible to cover all costs associated with legal guardian who is not a team member.

Cornwall’s Lauren Lenentine wins PEI Curling Hall of Fame bursary

Two junior men’s student-athletes from Summerside, and three junior women’s curlers from Cardigan, Crapaud, and New Dominion have been announced as the 2018 winners of PEI Curling Hall of Fame and Museum bursaries. The bursaries, which are provided by an anonymous donor, are awarded annually to PEI residents enrolled in a full-time post-secondary institution, who are eligible to participate in provincial junior playoffs, and who demonstrate a genuine financial need. Other criteria include curling achievements, passion for the sport, and community involvement.

On the junior men’s side, Parker MacFadyen from Summerside, who is attending UNB, received a $1000 bursary, while his brother Alex, a UPEI student, received $500.

A decision was made to split the $1000 junior women’s bursary this time, so there are three $500 recipients — Danielle Collings from Cardigan, and Taya-Ray Crossman from Crapaud, both attending Holland College, and Cornwall Curling Club member Lauren Lenentine from New Dominion, who is attending Dalhousie University.

Our club championships are coming up on the 18th, 19th: notes, eligibility rules

Our Club Championships to determine our Men’s and Women’s teams for the provincial Curling Club Championships (Feb. 22-26 in O’Leary) are coming up January 18 and 19.

2018 national Curling Club Championships PEI Women’s Team, skipped by Debbie Rhodenhizer (left).  (Curling Canada/Jordan Pinder photo)

Here’s what we know about the rules and the event.

– The sponsorship deal with Travelers Canada was scheduled to end on December 31.
– As far as we know (they’ve worked on eligibility rules) Curling Canada intends to hold a national Curling Club Championship for the 2019 season. These championships have always been held in November. No dates or venue have yet been announced.
– Depending on sponsorship, these may (or may not) be additional expenses to go to the national event, compared with previous seasons.

Here are the eligibility rules for PEI.

CURL PEI – 2018/19 Curling Club Championships Eligibility Requirements

Cornwall’s Lenentine on winning Nova Scotia junior championship rink

The reigning world junior champion Kaitlyn Jones rink from Halifax, which includes Cornwall Curling Club member Lauren Lenentine at third stone, has repeated as Nova Scotia Junior Women’s champions, beating the Isabelle Ladouceur rink from Sackville 10-3 Sunday evening in the first of two possible finals. Because Jones had won both the A and C divisions of the modified triple knockout draw, she only needed to win the first game to be declared champion.

Team Jones. Lauren Lenentine is 2nd from left

The NS Junior Men’s championship has come down to one deciding game at 8:30 this morning between the Matthew Manual squad from Halifax and the Graham Weagle foursome from Chester. Weagle won two of the three modified triple knockout sections, and could have wrapped up the series with the first championship game last night, but lost 8-4, to force this morning’s sudden-death final.

In New Brunswick, PEI’s Alex Gallant plays lead on the winning Junior Men’s team, skipped by Jack Smeltzer out of Fredericton’s Capital Winter Club, who beat Team Liam Marin from Saint John 9-6 in the final. Smeltzer had won two of the modified triple knockout sections, and wrapped things up Sunday afternoon by winning the first game.

It took an extra end, but Team Justine Comeau of Fredericton are headed to their 4th Canadian Junior Championships with a Sunday morning win over Team Erica Cluff of Woodstock. Comeau won all three modified triple knockout sections, so a championship round was not needed.

Ferguson and Smith teams are each one win away from Pepsi Junior titles

The Lauren Ferguson junior women’s rink from the Cornwall Curling Club, and the Tyler Smith junior men’s team from the host Charlottetown Curling Complex remain undefeated following Saturday play at the Pepsi Provincial Junior (U21) curling championships, and can win their respective championships with a win in any one of their three games on Sunday – the  9 am “C” final and the playoff round games at 2 and 7 pm. Their opponents, the  Annika Kelly rink from Cornwall and the Chase MacMillan foursome from Charlottetown, would have to win all three to be declared champions.

In “C” semi-final play this evening, Ferguson was trailing clubmate Emily Sanderson by one point after eight ends, but scored a triple in the ninth and ran Sanderson out of rocks in the 10th for a 7-5 final score. Kelly advanced to Sunday play with a 9-2 win over Cornwall clubmate Rachel MacLean, while Smith beat Summerside’s Brayden Snow squad 8-2 in six ends. Chase MacMillan advanced to the “C” final by edging Cornwall’s Devin Schut 8-7 this afternoon, coming from behind with a 10th end triple.

The PEI champions will advance to the 2019 New Holland Canadian Junior Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships, to be played Jan. 19-27 in Prince Albert Saskatchewan, co-hosted by the Art Hauser Centre and the Prince Albert Golf and Curling Club.

The Smith foursome from the host club won the junior men’s “A” qualifier with an 8-1 victory in six ends over the Brayden Snow foursome from the Silver Fox in Summerside, while the Lauren Ferguson squad were tied with their Cornwall clubmates the Rachel MacLean team after seven ends, but a steal of  four in the eighth gave Ferguson the advantage, and she went on to win 7-4.

Teams determined for A section qualifiers at Pepsi Juniors

Two draws are in the books following opening day on Thursday at the Pepsi Provincial Junior (U21) Curling Championships in Charlottetown, with the finalists determined for the 9 am Friday “A” section qualifier games to pick the first junior men’s and junior women’s teams to advance to the Sunday championship round.

Photo: Rachel MacLean

In the Junior Women’s section, where all six teams are from the Cornwall Curling Club, the Rachel MacLean team beat the Emily Sanderson rink 9-5 in their opener, and went on to record a lopsided 15-2 win over the Clara Jack foursome.

Photo: Lauren Ferguson (centre) with Lexie Murray (left) and Alexis Burris (right)

PEI’s Canada Games representatives, the Lauren Ferguson team, stole deuces in ends 7 and 8 to beat the Sydney Howatt squad 9-3 in their opening game, and then went into an intense come-from-behind battle with the Annika Kelly rink, where they trailed 6-3 after eight ends in the ten end contest. Ferguson took a triple in the ninth, and then stole a single in the 10th for a 7-6 win and a ticket to the “A” final.

Photo: Tyler Smith

On the men’s side, the Tyler Smith team from Charlottetown, who had a bye in the first draw, took control early in their game against their younger clubmates the Chase MacMillan rink, scoring five points in the first end, and went on to a 13-3 victory in six ends.

The young Brayden Snow rink from the Silver Fox in Summerside were the first team to grab a spot in the A finals, beating the Devin Schut team from Cornwall 8-4 in the afternoon draw.

With the modified triple-knockout draw, section winners drop down to compete in the other sections. The section winners advance to the Sunday playoffs, unless one team wins all three sections. In this case, they will be the champions and a playoff won’t be needed. The winner of two sections would have to be beaten twice in the championship round against the winner of the other section.

Other draws on Friday are at  2 and 7 pm, with the B and C finals going Saturday and Sunday at 9 am, respectively. Full schedule is on the event web page at: http://peicurling.com/juniors20182019/

10 teams (7 from Cornwall) begin Pepsi Provincial Junior play this afternoon in Ch’town

The Pepsi Provincial Junior Men’s and Junior Women’s Curling Championships, for curlers in the Under 21 age category, take place at the Charlottetown Curling Complex from December 27-30, with six junior women’s and four junior men’s teams from three PEI curling clubs entered.  The Devin Schut junior men’s team, plus all six junior women’s teams, are from Cornwall, so we will definitely have a junior women’s champ from our Club again this year!

There will be new winning skips this year, as reigning PEI junior women’s champ Lauren Lenentine is now curling on the defending World Junior championship Kaitlyn Jones rink out of Halifax, with Breanne Burgoyne and Rachel O’Connor from last year’s team now curling with skip Annika Kelly, while last year’s junior men’s champion skip Alex MacFadyen has moved to second stone, and is on the foursome skipped by three-time PEI junior champ Tyler Smith. Last year’s junior women’s runner-up team, and 2019 Canada Games girl’s team, skipped by Lauren Ferguson, is back in its entirety, while Mitchell Schut, skip of last year’s runner-up junior men’s squad and the 2019 Canada Games boy’s team, is back as fifth player on his brother Devin Schut’s team.

As we noted, all six junior women’s contenders, including the Kelly and Ferguson teams, along with the Sydney Howatt team, with Sierra Clyke calling the game and Howatt throwing skip stones, plus the Clara Jack, Rachel MacLean, and Emily Sanderson rinks are from the Cornwall Curling Club, while the Tyler Smith and Chase MacMillan junior men’s teams are from the Charlottetown Curling Complex, the Braydon Snow team is from the Silver Fox in Summerside, and the Devin Schut rink curls out of Cornwall.

Teams in both the junior men’s and junior women’s sections will play a modified triple knockout format, where the winning team from each section also gets to compete in the next section. If a team wins all three sections, they will win the event without a championship round. If a team wins two sections, they will advance to a championship game against the winner of the other section and will take the championship if they win the game. If the other team wins, there will be a second championship game, with the winner of that game going to the nationals. If there are three separate section winners, the team that played in the most section finals will earn a bye to the second championship game where they will face the winner of a game between the other two finalists.

Live results from all Curl PEI provincial championships are available at PEICurling.com.

Previous PEI Junior Championship winners and websites are at: peicurling.com/pei-curling-history/history-menu/provincial-juniors-winners-and-past-event-websites/

The winning Junior Men’s and  Women’s teams will advance to the 2019 New Holland Canadian Junior Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships, to be played Jan. 19-27 in Prince Albert Saskatchewan, co-hosted by the Art Hauser Centre and the Prince Albert Golf and Curling Club.
