Schut-skipped Cornwall rink set to wear Island colours at Canada Games (Guardian/Team PEI)

CORNWALL, P.E.I. – It was 1991, on home soil, when P.E.I. won its first-ever team medal at the Canada Winter Games. The Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside saw head coach Gary Cudmore and team members Rob Newson, Paul MacCormack, Brian Matheson and [skip] Sean Matheson make P.E.I. history. The men’s curling team that year set the bar with a 4-3 victory over Ontario to secure the national bronze medal.

Fast-forward 27 years later, and Team P.E.I.’s men’s curling representatives will be heading to Red Deer, Alta., this February hoping to create some memories of their own. The Cornwall Curling Club team is led by head coach Lori Robinson and skipped by Mitchell Schut. Third Nick Johnston, second Liam Kelly and lead Colin MacKenzie, along with Schut and Robinson, are hopeful heading into the Games with expectations to qualify for the medal round where they know anything can happen.

Team P.E.I.’s men’s curling team is set for the Canada Games in Red Deer, Alta. The Games run Feb. 15-March 3 with curling taking place Feb. 25-March 2. Team members, from left, are skip Mitchell Schut, third Nick Johnston, coach Lori Robinson, second Liam Kelly and lead Colin MacKenzie. – Contributed

The group of athletes and Robinson have been competing together for more than a year now. They had a successful campaign en route to representing the Island in Red Deer by qualifying through a provincial playoff.

Part of their routine is working with Travis McIsaac at Synergy Fitness on two aspects of training, mental and physical. Their hard work will be put to the test come February, but Robinson knows if they stick to the game plan, they could turn some heads on the ice.
“We need to focus on the round robin in order to qualify for the medal round,” Robinson explained. “We’re confident in our ability to place ourselves in the competitions top six teams, and once you make it that far, anything can happen.”
Robinson herself represented Team P.E.I. in curling 32 years ago at the Canada Games held in Sydney, N.S. Her brother, during the same Games, was a member of the men’s curling team and now her nephew, Johnston, is competing in 2019. Curling is in the family’s blood, and Robinson looks forward to attending another Games, but this time, in a new role as a head coach.
Tournaments leading up to a major competition like the Canada Games are invaluable. This is why Nick, Liam, Colin and Mitchell competed in the under-18 national championships in St. Andrews, N.B., several months back. It was considered a learning experience for three of the four athletes who had yet to compete outside of Atlantic Canada. The tournament proved to be worth its weight in gold as it showcased a few Canada Games teams from other provinces who Team P.E.I. will likely face this February.
The final pre-Games competition before Red Deer will take place Jan. 11 and 12 as the Maritime provinces will face off on the mainland. It will be a great time to work out any kinks and set the tone for the big Games that lay ahead.
It may have been 27 years ago, but that bronze medal showed that a small province like P.E.I. can compete with the nation’s best. It will no doubt be on the mind of Team Schut as they approach the biggest competition in their careers.
For more information on Team P.E.I. and the 2019 Canada Winter Games, stay tuned for our Countdown to the Games articles and be sure to follow Team P.E.I. on Facebook and Twitter.

The Ebbett rink and the Kim Nicholson team were tied going into their final game, against each other, but Ebbett, and her team of Kim Pippy and Paulette Richard, helped out by Joe Callaghan who was sparing for Colleen Soltermann, were on their game this evening, and picked up the win. The Sanderson team were leading by a couple of games and had secured the B Pool top spot before tonight’s match. Other members of the team are Emma Coffin, Kaylee Stewart, and AnnaMaria MacDonald. 10 teams (7 from Cornwall) to compete in Ch’town for Pepsi Provincial Junior curling titles

The Pepsi Provincial Junior Men’s and Junior Women’s Curling Championships, for curlers in the Under 21 age category, take place at the Charlottetown Curling Complex from December 27-30, with six junior women’s and four junior men’s teams from three PEI curling clubs entered.  The Devin Schut junior men’s team, plus all six junior women’s teams, are from Cornwall, so we will definitely have a junior women’s champ from our Club again this year!

There will be new winning skips this year, as reigning PEI junior women’s champ Lauren Lenentine is now curling on the defending World Junior championship Kaitlyn Jones rink out of Halifax, with Breanne Burgoyne and Rachel O’Connor from last year’s team now curling with skip Annika Kelly, while last year’s junior men’s champion skip Alex MacFadyen has moved to second stone, and is on the foursome skipped by three-time PEI junior champ Tyler Smith. Last year’s junior women’s runner-up team, and 2019 Canada Games girl’s team, skipped by Lauren Ferguson, is back in its entirety, while Mitchell Schut, skip of last year’s runner-up junior men’s squad and the 2019 Canada Games boy’s team, is back as fifth player on his brother Devin Schut’s team.

As we noted, all six junior women’s contenders, including the Kelly and Ferguson teams, along with the Sydney Howatt team, with Sierra Clyke calling the game and Howatt throwing skip stones, plus the Clara Jack, Rachel MacLean, and Emily Sanderson rinks are from the Cornwall Curling Club, while the Tyler Smith and Chase MacMillan junior men’s teams are from the Charlottetown Curling Complex, the Braydon Snow team is from the Silver Fox in Summerside, and the Devin Schut rink curls out of Cornwall.

Teams in both the junior men’s and junior women’s sections will play a modified triple knockout format, where the winning team from each section also gets to compete in the next section. If a team wins all three sections, they will win the event without a championship round. If a team wins two sections, they will advance to a championship game against the winner of the other section and will take the championship if they win the game. If the other team wins, there will be a second championship game, with the winner of that game going to the nationals. If there are three separate section winners, the team that played in the most section finals will earn a bye to the second championship game where they will face the winner of a game between the other two finalists.

Live results from all Curl PEI provincial championships are available at PEICurling.com.

Previous PEI Junior Championship winners and websites are at: peicurling.com/pei-curling-history/history-menu/provincial-juniors-winners-and-past-event-websites/

The winning Junior Men’s and  Women’s teams will advance to the 2019 New Holland Canadian Junior Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships, to be played Jan. 19-27 in Prince Albert Saskatchewan, co-hosted by the Art Hauser Centre and the Prince Albert Golf and Curling Club.

Birt wins WFG Jim Sullivan Classic after defeating Cornwall’s Smith in semis

The annual WPG Jim Sullivan Curling Classic wrapped up Sunday afternoon at the Thistle St. Andrews Curling Club in Saint John NB, with PEI’s Suzanne Birt rink and Nova Scotia’s Kendal Thompson team taking the top cash prizes back to their home provinces.

Birt beat New Brunswick’s Andrea Crawford team 6-4 in the final, scoring three of those points in the final two ends while Thompson edged defending champ Jamie Murphy, also from Halifax, by an 8-7 score, fighting back from a 7-4 deficit by taking four points in the final two ends.

PEI’s Veronica Smith team, runners-up last year, went undefeated in the round robin and won their quarter-final, but lost in the semi-finals to Birt by an 8-6 score, when Birt stole the eighth end to tie the game and then stole a deuce in the extra end for the win.

The Melissa Morrow foursome from Summerside, runners-up in last season’s PEI Travelers Curling Club Championship, was the third PEI team in the event, finishing just out of the playoffs with a 2-2 win-loss record.

18 teams (none from PEI) took part in the men’s event with the following prize structure:
Total Prize Purse: $15,300
1st Place – $5,000
2nd Place – $3,300
Semi-finalists – $1,500
Quarter-finalists – $1,000

The women’s prize structure was based on 10 teams, but it was expanded to include 15, and the updated prize structure has not been provided.

Cornwall’s Veronica Smith rink goes undefeated to advance to WFG Jim Sullivan Classic Quarter-Finals

Two out of the three PEI rinks entered in the WFG Jim Sullivan Curling Classic at the Thistle St. Andrews Curling Club in Saint John NB have advanced to this morning’s 8:30 quarter-final round.

Team Veronica Smith

The Veronica Smith team, runners-up to Sylvie Robichaud in the event last year, went undefeated, while Suzanne Birt and her team finished second in the same pool, losing only to Smith, by a 7-1 score, and also advance to the money round. Moncton’s Robichaud is the only other undefeated team in the women’s event. PEI’s Melissa Morrow rink, PEI Travelers finalists last season, finished out of the playoffs at 2-2 win-loss with wins over Andrea Crawford and Shelly Graham, but losing to Robichaud and to a Saint John team skipped by Marin McLeod.

Cornwall’s Schut and Ferguson teams lead best of 5 series 2-1 going into Sunday play at Canada Games Finals

Three games have been completed in the best of five Canada Games Finals here in Cornwall for both the girls’ and boys’ divisions, with Cornwall’s Lauren Ferguson rink leading the girl’s series two games to one over their clubmates, the Sydney Howatt squad, and Cornwall’s Mitchell Schut  team leading the boy’s series, also two games to one, over Charlottetown’s Chase MacMillan foursome. This means that a win in either game on Sunday, at 10 am and 3:30 pm, would send the Ferguson or Schut teams to the Canada Games in Red Deer, while Howatt and MacMillan would have to win both of their games.

(L-R) Lexie Murray, Lauren Ferguson, and Alexis Burris

(L-R): Liam Barbrick, Chase MacMillan, Davis Nicholson

In Draw Two on Saturday morning, Team Ferguson moved to 2-0 on the girls’ side with a 4-3 win over Team Howatt while teams MacMillan and Schut were tied at a game apiece on the boy’s side following an 8-4 win by the Chase MacMillan team.

Both games came down to exciting finishes in Draw Three on Saturday afternoon.

Photo (L-R): Meghan Sherren, Sydney Howatt, and Madelyn Cantwell from Team Howatt

The Sydney Howatt team, with Howatt throwing final stones, and Sierra Clyke calling the game, was tied 5-5 after eight ends, with last rock advantage in the final end going to the Lauren Ferguson rink, who had a 2-0 lead in the series and would have advanced to the Canada Games in Red Deer with a win.  However, Howatt stole the end, for a 6-5 final score forcing game four on Sunday morning.

Photo (L-R): Mitchell Schut, Liam Kelly, Colin MacKenzie

The boys’ game, with the series tied 1-all, was also close, with the Chase MacMillan team, hot off a morning win over the Schut squad, leading 3-2 after six ends. Schut blanked the seventh to have hammer coming home, and took the win with a three-point eighth end and a 5-3 final score.

Paul had been resuscitated with the help of another Club member performing CPR until the paramedics arrived. As a result of that incident, the Club, with the help of monies raised by the Daytime Curlers and donated by Cornwall Physiotherapy and Sports Rehabilitation, purchased an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), and Club staff received training in CPR and use of the AED. A fundraiser, attended by many Club members, was held at the North Shore Community Centre, and raised $19,000 to assist with home modifications and other aspects of his recovery.

Cornwall’s Schut and Ferguson rinks win opening matches in Canada Games Qualifier Finals best of five series

The two teams who finished the PEI Canada Games Trials #1 in first place have won their openers at the Canada Games Qualifier Finals here at the Cornwall Curling Club, with Cornwall’s Mitchell Schut rink beating Charlottetown’s Chase MacMillan team 6-2 in the first game of the boys’ best of five series, and the Lauren Ferguson team beating their Cornwall clubmates the Sydney Howatt rink by a 3-1 score in the girls’. Game two in each series goes at 10 am Saturday, with Game three going at 2 pm. Games four and five, if necessary, go Sunday at 10 am and, if needed, 3:30 pm. The winning teams advance to the Canada Winter Games in Red Deer Alberta, February 15 until March 3, 2019.

(Skip-lead L-R): Mitchell Schut, Nick Johnston, Liam Kelly, Colin MacKenzie, Coach Lori Robinson

(Skip-lead L-R): David MacFadyen (coach), Chase MacMillan, Jack MacFadyen, Liam Barbrick, Davis Nicholson

Team Schut got off to a fast start in their game, using last-rock advantage to score four points in the first end, and then stealing a single in the second. MacMillan took singles in the next two ends to narrow the gap to 5-2 at the fourth end break. Schut was kept to a single in the fifth, with MacMillan blanking the next two ends to keep last rock advantage, but running out of rocks in the eighth.

(Skip-lead L-R): Lauren Ferguson, Katie Shaw, Alexis Burris, Lexie Murray
Back Row: David Murphy (coach)

(L-R): Sierra Clyke (calls the game, throws third), Sydney Howatt (throws fourth), Meghan Sherren (second), Madelyn Cantwell (lead), A.J. Campbell (coach)

The Howatt rink had opening hammer, blanking the first two ends, but Ferguson stole the third and fourth ends to lead 2-0 at the half. The teams traded singles in the fifth and sixth, and blanked the seventh, but Ferguson, leading 3-1 coming home, did not have to throw her final rock.

Engineering better sweeping!

Three UPEI engineering students paid a visit to the Club today to do some work on a school project.
You may know Leslie Noye from curling. Also in the group is  Hammad Ahmed, and Connor MacEwen.

Photo (L-R): Ahmed, MacEwen, Noye

They hooked up a device to a curling brush to determine the best speed to sweep, using WCF-approved heads. Their device, invented by them, looks like a heart monitor. They also measured the temperature of the ice with a digital thermometer and took heat sensitive pictures. At the fastest sweeping and hardest pressure, the ice warmed 3 degrees! They will be making their full report available, probably after Christmas.

Good time had by all at Murphy’s Ice Queens Women’s Funspiel!

Murphy’s Ice Queens Funspiel was held on December 1/ 2018  with 8 teams participating.

Matos Winery donated a basket with a bottle of red wine, balsamic vinegar, and other goodies; and there were door prizes on hand as well, including donated pot scrubbers from Shirley Berry.

Winning  Currie rink

Each team played  3 six-end games, round robin format. Winners of the event were Karen Currie (who skipped another winning team last year) as well as Joanne Durant, Irene Fraser and Jean Anderson (she was also on the winning team last year). These ladies will have their names inscribed on the  Murphy’s Ice Queens Trophy and each won a $40 Murphy’s gift card.

2nd place MacKay team

Second place $25 Murphy’s gift cards were awarded to Diane MacKay, Carlene Peters, Helen Smith and Lacey Gallant.

Enthusiastic photo booth participation winners

The final four $10 Murphy’s gift cards were awarded to Janette Fraser, Carolyn Crockett, Bernie Field and Ann Greybourn for their enthusiastic participation in the photo booth.

We also had Cornwall Curling Club gift certificates as prizes for the teams who won trivia (Kim Nicholson, Janice Murdoch, Lisa MacEachern, Paula Ling), and a brain teasers game (Myrna Sanderson, Angela Sanderson and Amanda MacIntosh).

The ladies were treated to lunch of soup and rolls followed by sweets; and a closing banquet was catered by Alan Carmichael who prepared a lovely turkey dinner with all the fixings. The meal was served by club members Darren MacKinnon and Doug Kelly and board members Chris MacDougall and Peter Murdoch.

This event could not have been so successful without the generosity of our sponsor, Murphy’s Pharmacies as well as the ongoing support we have had from Matos Wineries. We had lots of help from many members with such tasks as taking registration, selling tickets, providing food, kitchen duty, setting up, cleaning up etc.

Events at our club would not be so successful without the continued support of Bev, Lance, Ray and our bartenders, who for this spiel was Al.

We are very thankful to everyone who participated and helped out with this event!

Alberta Women, BC Men win Travelers gold, Cornwall’s Nancy MacFadyen wins Sportsmanship award (Curling Canada)

British Columbia captured back-to-back men’s titles while Alberta’s Morgan Muise won her first Travelers Curling Club Championship in three tries on Saturday at the Miramichi Curling Club in Miramichi, New Brunswick.

Team BC Men (Richmond Curling Club: (Skip) Vic Shimizu, (Third) Cody Tanaka, (Second) Trevor Bakken, (Lead) Mark Yodogawa) and Team AB Women (Calgary Curling Club: (Skip) Morgan Muise, (Third) Lyndsay Allen, (Second) Sarah Evans, (Lead) Sara Gartner) Gold medallists of the 2018 Travelers Curling Club Championship in Miramichi, N.B. (Curling Canada/Jordan Pinder photo)

The team from the Calgary Curling Club of Muise, third Lyndsay Allen, second Sarah Evans and lead Sara Gartner have curled together for seven years and left Miramichi on Saturday with their province’s second women’s title in eight years.

“This is what we came for. We lost the final in Kelowna two years ago so it feels pretty good to put in a lot of hard work over the last two years to get back and take advantage of another opportunity in the final,” Muise said after running Nova Scotia out of rocks in the eighth end.

“We started the game with a few more rocks in play than we’d normally play in the first end. There was a biter on the edge that the other team ignored thinking it was out and the measure was in our favour in the end,” Muise explained.

The Calgary team stole in the second end to take a four point lead and never looked back the rest of the game, en route to their 7-3 win.

Muise and her Alberta squad defeated Nova Scotia skip Michelle Williams, third Mary Porter, second Abby Miller and lead Kathleen Porter, who earned the silver medal.

Muise, 33, is the Curling Coordinator at the Spray Lake Sawmill Family Sports Centre and says her team is looking forward to their return to Alberta, “We have the bye in our league game on Tuesday night!” Muise said with a fist pump and cheers from her teammates.

In the men’s final, British Columbia became just the second men’s team to run the table, going 6-0 in the round robin and winning both playoff games in convincing fashion.

The team from the Richmond Curling Club was meticulous in their victory over Nova Scotia’s Kurt Roach.

“We’re so, so happy… to bring back the banner to the home club it means everything,” Coady Tanaka, who throws fourth stones for the B.C. team, said after the 8-3 victory.

Tanaka, skip Vic Shimizu, second Trevor Bakken and lead Mark Yodogawa were in danger of giving up three points in the second end but Roach’s final stone over curled, resulting in a steal and a 3-0 lead early in the game for B.C.

The 24-year-old ice technician widened the lead with a challenging draw to the four-foot in the fourth end.

“The ice was great and probably the easiest to read all week. I felt really comfortable with my draw weight and hits,” Tanaka said.

The young skip was named Most Valuable Player in the men’s tournament and his shot making in the final lived up to the award, including a flat double takeout in the third end to force Nova Scotia to a single point.

Roach with third Mark MacNamara, second Travis Stone and lead Robin Nathanson put pressure on the B.C. team in the sixth end. Facing two counters in the four-foot, Tanaka was able to find the button and gain full control in the Travelers Championship gold medal match.

Cornwall, Ont., skip Matthew Dupuis, third Terry Lichty, second Jonathan King and lead Charles Wert won the bronze medal after the team from the Cornwall Curling Centre executed a perfect six-foot tap to the button to defeat Saskatchewan 5-4.

For the second year in a row Ontario also claimed third spot in the women’s division. Oshawa Curling Club’s Stacey Hogan, third Suzanne Miller, second Mandy Aston, lead Amber-Dawn Duncan and coach Nathan Martin defeated Northwest Territories 5-4.

The skip from Yellowknife will not leave Miramichi empty handed. Sarah Stroeder was chosen as Most Valuable Player in the women’s division by Curling Canada’s onsite umpires.

Nancy MacFadyen (Curling Canada photo)

Sportsmanship awards were handed out on Saturday to players at each position for men and women. Chantelle Masson (Nunavut skip), Nancy MacFadyen (P.E.I. third), Tamar Vandenberghe (Yukon second) and Anneli Jokela (Northwest Territories lead) were chosen by their peers as sportsmanship winners in the women’s division. Jim Sias (Yukon skip), Mark MacNamara (Nova Scotia third), Devon Bouillon (Northwest Territories second) and Cameron Barth (Manitoba lead) were winners in the men’s event.

Teams competing on the ice in Miramichi helped give back to youth curling across Canada through the annual Travelers Championship silent auction and the team fundraising campaigns.

This year’s efforts raised just over $29,000 to support the Curling Canada Foundation. There was extra incentive for each team to raise money as every $400 raised earned that team a ballot for a grand prize raffle which included an all-expenses trip for four, including event passes, accommodation and flights, to the 2019 World Financial Group Continental Cup Jan. 17-20 in Las Vegas.
