6th Annual Masters Plus Bonspiel set for Cornwall on Nov. 22/23

The Cornwall Curling Club is getting ready to host its 6th annual Masters Plus Bonspiel on Thursday November 22nd and Friday November 23rd. Masters Plus teams include three curlers age 60 and over, and one who is at least 55. This year there is again a full draw of 16 teams entered — representing four different curling clubs from all three Maritime provinces.  Off-Island teams are from CFB Halifax, Sackville, and Sackville/Moncton. Curling fans are invited to take in the action as many of the teams have curlers who have won provincial titles. There is no charge to watch the curling.

USA Ladies Friendship Tour – it (mostly) happened, after all!

Tuesday November 6th, although somewhat challenging for our Club, turned out to be a very rewarding one, with the USA Ladies Friendship tour cancelled, then “uncancelled” at the last minute.

Plans were made for 16 American ladies to curl at our Club at 10:00 a.m..  Due to travel conditions beyond their control, they were unable to arrive in Halifax at their scheduled time and the morning event at our club was cancelled with everyone being notified.

However, after being rerouted; arriving in Halifax at midnight, and numerous phone calls, a decision was made to meet these ladies for lunch at our Club on the 6th.  A mad dash was made to redecorate the Club to some extent and prepare lunch.  Phone calls were once again made to some ladies living nearest the club to help out.  Stick curlers who were curling at the time were also invited to join in.

These ladies came from numerous states:  Ohio, Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin, Maryland, Colorado, Washington, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.  Although their curling experience ranges from 3 to 44 years, they had never curled together.  Needless to say,  when Lance, our icemaker, announced that we could curl a few ends before the juniors’ practice, the US ladies were overjoyed!

Although we were unable to carry out our fully planned agenda, we were able to present each of the ladies with a lovely candleholder made from sea glass collected from our beautiful PEI beaches.

This event had been in the planning stages for many months, was cancelled at the last minute through no one’s fault, and rescheduled.  It could only go forward due to the dedication of our many club members/volunteers.   THANK YOU EVERYONE!!

In the Junior Women’s event, it was a battle of Halifax teams, with Team Cally Moore leading 4-3 after six ends in their game against the reigning World Junior Champion Kaitlyn Jones rink of Halifax, which includes Cornwall Curling Club member Lauren Lenentine at third stone. In the Junior Men’s final, Graeme Weagle and his host club team had a 4-0 lead after four ends, and held on to win 6-3 over Haligonian Mitchell Cortello.

Cornwall’s Rhodenhizer rink set to compete at the Travelers Curling Club Ch’ship in the Miramichi

The 2018 Travelers Curling Club Championship will be staged Nov. 19-24 at the Miramichi Curling Club in Miramichi, N.B., with fourteen men’s and 14 women’s teams from the 10 provinces, three territories and Northern Ontario taking part.

This will be the 10th edition of the Travelers Curling Club Championship. Cornwall was co-host of the national event back in its second season, and the Cornwall women’s team of skip Lisa Jackson, third Carolyn Coulson, second Melissa Morrow, and lead Jodi Murphy won the national women’s Travelers in 2015.

PEI will be represented this time by the Debbie Rhodenhizer rink from here in Cornwall on the Women’s side, and the Jamie Newson squad from the Silver Fox in Summerside on the Men’s. The Cornwall women had an amazing finish at the provincials, winning two tiebreakers, the semi-final, and then two final games, both in extra ends, to take the provincial women’s title.

There will be a lineup change on the women’s team, as lead Cindy Nicholson is out with a knee injury, and Karen Currie will be curling in her place. On the men’s side, skip Jamie Newson sat out the Canadian Mixed championship due to an ankle injury (he went instead as coach), but is currently scheduled to compete in the Travelers.  Andrew MacDougall will also be attending as an alternate for the team. Looking at the other teams, Alison Griffin, who was on PEI’s 2016 Travelers Women’s Championship team, is back at the national Travelers again, competing for Nunavut.

Photo (L-R): Cindy Nicholson, Sandra Sobey (2nd), Karen Currie (seated, lead), Nancy MacFadyen (3rd), Debbie Rhodenhizer (skip)

PEI Men’s representatives (L-R, skip to lead): Jamie Newson, Corey Miller, Patrick Ramsay, Adam Arsenault

The PEI women are leaving for the Travelers on Sunday 18th, Their first game is on Monday the 19th at 3 pm against the Yukon.

Note that, while many things are paid for at the Nationals, the PEI women have also been busy fundraising.  Each year all teams participating take part in the “For the Love of Curling” fundraiser, which creates opportunities for youth curlers across Canada. The PEI women had a booth at the Crapaud Tractor Pull Championships this past summer, selling baked potatoes, popcorn, water, and coffee, had a yard sale, and collected bottles. Debbie also knit mittens (some went as far as Yellowknife!). They also have to provide a silent auction item valued at $150, and may be doing some additional fundraising for that. You can also donate to the fundraiser on behalf of either team by clicking the link under their picture on the Team pages on the event website.

Here is the event schedule. Note that some games are planned to be livestreamed. We’ll have mfo on that as it becomes available. Live results will be available at Curling Canada’s website.

Buzzer timing change for late draws

The timing of the buzzer will be changing on the late draws on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings.  Because the games do not always start at 8:30 pm due to the time needed to clean the ice and prepare it for the late draw, the buzzer will now be activated at 10:25 instead of 10:15 pm.

When the buzzer goes, we ask you to finish up the end you are on, and then take the rocks back to the home end if necessary. In other words, you have to be in the hack throwing your first rock in your last end by 8:15 for the early draw, or 10:25 for the late draw in order to get all the ends in. In order to keep things fair, we use the buzzer on the late evening draw as well as the early draw, to ensure that everyone is treated equally and you aren’t here too late at night.

Sanderson/Kennedy team repeat as Cornwall Mixed Doubles Cashspiel overall winners

The duo of Myrna Sanderson and Angus Kennedy were once again the overall points winners at the Cornwall Curling Club’s annual Mixed Doubles Cashspiel, having taken that honour in most of the years the event has been held (and won their pool when they didn’t). This year, they amassed 39 points.

Finishing tied for second, with 35 points each in their respective pools were the duos of Melissa and Chris Creighton (who also won their pools in 2016 and 2017), and Meaghan Hughes and Ryan Giddens.

The junior team of Alexis Burris and Colin Roy MacKenzie were the winners of the fourth section, with 33 points, after coming out on the winning side of a very close third game, against Myrna and Barry Craswell.

This cashspiel, which fills up quickly with 16 teams every year, and also includes a meal, was once again organized by Myrna Sanderson, helped out by Angela Sanderson and Brent Irving, with others pitching in, too. Curlers from Cornwall, Crapaud, and Charlottetown took part.
