Free Curling School, new members registration pushed back one night due to plant problem

A faulty ice plant part has caused delays in our ice production. The part has now been replaced, and the plant is now operating at the proper freezing temperatures. Because of this, we will have to delay our Free, No Obligation Adult Curling School/Open House/New Registration by one night. It will now run Wednesday Oct. 14 through Friday Oct. 16. from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Come any or all nights – we will have curling instruction at various levels each night, so you can continue to learn.

Daytime curlers please note that, due to the need to accelerate ice production, the ice will not be available for daytime curling on Tuesday or Wednesday Oct. 13-14.

Club member Sterling Stratton inks his 7th book! (Guardian)

(by Dave Stewart)

Sterling Stratton’s pen is a key that opens doors in Charlottetown.

For the past 12 years, he’s been taking Islanders back in time.

sterling2015

Charlottetown resident Sterling Stratton is getting set to publish his seventh pen and ink sketch book.

Using pictures he takes of historic buildings across Prince Edward Island, Stratton creates detailed pen and ink sketches that impress even professional architects.

He presents a sketch to each home owner.

The door opens, a warm invitation is extended and the story begins.

Stratton compiles it all and puts it a book.

He’s about to publish his seventh book, entitled “Majestic Homes of Charlottetown”, 1865 to 1900, featuring 32 homes.

Stratton is proof that it’s never too late to pick up a new hobby.

He didn’t draw his first pen and ink sketch until he was 65 years old.

If you are interested in any of Sterling’s books, he can be reached at sstratton@eastlink.ca or 902-367-5150.

It was a warm 24C  day, and the ice-making uniforms included shorts, as the first flood was applied today inside the steamy Cornwall Curling Club ice house.

On duty were head icemaker Lance Lowther, along with Bob MacWilliams, Al MacCormac, and Jeff Taylor. We’ll keep you up to date as ice-making progresses! See it for yourself during Returning Member Registration night on Oct. 7,  and curl on it starting Oct. 13!

Our reconditioned rocks are back in the house!

We are pleased to report that our Club’s curling rocks have made it back from being reconditioned in Ontario, with running surfaces and striking bands brought back to original specifications. Thanks to everyone involved in making this happen, from raising money, to packing them up, to the reconditioning process. We just need to put the handles back on, install some ice for them to run on, and we’ll be ready to rock!

Cornwall membership rates same as last season!

rates

The Cornwall Curling Club Board of Directors met on Tuesday evening, and, after reviewing finances, voted to maintain last season’s membership rates. If you are comparing rates with other facilities, note that ALL our curling memberships allow practice time when ice is available, allow you to participate (at extra cost) in provincial championships. Curling is a very reasonably-priced sport – curl one night all season for about the same price as two rounds of golf at a high-end course.

Payment terms for adult memberships:  1/2 due on registration and 1/2 due on December 1. A $10.00 service charge applies to payments received after Dec 1. Youth memberships are due at registration. Memberships may be paid with Debit, Visa, Mastercard, cheque, or cash.

Note that HST (14%) and a  Canadian Curling Association/Curl PEI fee (was $15 last season – this season’s fee to be confirmed) will be added to the following rates:

ADULT MEMBERSHIPS:

  • One Evening Draw per week $210
  • Two Daytime sessions per week $210
  • Adult Unlimited Night only $320
  • Adult Unlimited Daytime only $290
  • Adult Unlimited (Day and night) $350
  • Couple Unlimited $600
  • Full-time Student (19+) unlimited $230
  • Commercial League (Monday at 8:30 pm): $650/team

YOUTH MEMBERSHIPS:

  • Little Rockers (ages 6-7):
    • One session Oct-Dec or Jan-Mar $50
    • For both sessions $85
  • Novice (8-12) & Juniors (13-20) full season $125
  • Junior membership, plus one evening draw $230

OTHER:

  • Social Memberships – attend club events, curl in club spiels (at extra cost): $40
  • Non-Members “walk-on” fee per draw (if space available, or called as a spare). HST Included.
    • Junior $5
    • Daytime/Nighttime $10 or 10 passes for $80.
  • Locker Rentals (may be shared) $30 for season.

Drop-in Policy

We welcome “drop-in” (non-member) curlers, particularly in our 10 am weekday draws, where teams are made up as players arrive, and also as spares in our other draws. If your spare is a Club member, they don’t have to pay anything extra, but, if your spare is not a member, they are required to pay a “drop-in” fee (just like at a golf course or health club where you don’t have a membership, you are required to pay when brought in as a substitute for a member)

If you don’t have the time to curl here regularly as a member (or are just in town for a few days), and show up before a draw, there is always a chance that we can find a spot for you. If you are able to curl for one entire single-entry draw session (six or seven weeks), we may be able to fit you in, too, as sometimes a member may know in advance that they will be absent for a particular draw – contact the Club Manager. In all these cases, “drop-in” curlers (or their skips who contacted them) are required to pay the drop-in rate at the bar before going on the ice, and skips are required to let the bartender know that a drop-in spare is being used.

Drop-in rates are $10 per game for ALL adult curlers for both evening and daytime draws  or $5 for juniors, taxes in. For those who “drop-in” frequently, a pack of 10 drop-in fees is available at a discounted rate of $80. Drop-in fees DO include the HST.

The 10 am daytime draw, where teams are made up each day as players arrive, is a special case. Club members regularly in the draw have discs that they drop in a cup labeled with the position that they want to play. Drop-in (non-members) for this draw are required to obtain a chit for this purpose from the office by paying the  drop-in fee. It will have their name on it, and will be turned in by the drawmaster to the office after it is used.

Ice Booking Policy

Open ice can be booked for use by members, regardless of type of membership purchased, without additional cost, on a first come first served basis. Open ice can also be booked for use by non-members for a standard rental fee on the same first come first served basis. Members are encouraged to book early to avoid disappointment and asked to notify the club if a change of plans prevents you from keeping your booking.

Ice and facilities rentals

Book our ice and/or hall facilities for your next office party, family bonspiel, or fun time with friends!
Renting one sheet of ice for 8 curlers for two hours is a bargain at under $10 a person taxes in (it’s cheaper than adult bowling, the movies and many other activities!). We provide the renters with curling brushes, and sliders – just bring clean sneakers, and wear stretchy or loose pants. We can also provide basic curling instruction, and bar services are available, too!
We can seat up to 100 people in our clubhouse area. Facilities are also available for rental in the upstairs Civic Centre hall. We have a number of catering options available, or you can use our kitchen facilities at no additional cost.

Here are our ice rental prices (HST will be added). Contact us for hall options or different number of sheets or rental times.

1 sheet for 2 hours: $70

4 sheets for 2 hours: $170

4 sheets for 4 hours: $275

4 sheets for 8 hours: $485

Call us at 902-566-4427 to book, or for different sheet quantities, catering or additional hall options.

Commercial League

Our Commercial League is a great way to get together with your co-workers (outside of work) or friends on a weekly basis. It runs Monday nights from 8:30-10:30. Cornwall Jr. member does Heritage Fair project on Sandra Schmirler

Jack MacFadyen, a Cornwall Curling Club Junior Curler, did a Heritage Fair project at his school, on the life journey of Sandra Schmirler. His project is in the November 2014 issue of the Sandra Schmirler Foundation Newsletter. Click to read newsletter.

Here is the story, reprinted from the newsletter:

GRADE FOUR SCHOOL PROJECT

jackheritageschmirler

“Hi, my name is Jack MacFadyen. I’m nine years old and in grade four at Sherwood Elementary School in Prince Edward Island. I love the game of curling so much that I decided to do my Heritage Fair Project on the life of Sandra Schmirler, the QUEEN OF CURLING.

During my presentation my class clapped three times for all the information I was telling them about Sandra’s love of family and her passion for curling. I explained to them how Sandra, in grade seven, became interested in curling and over the years she curled in Provincial, Canadian, and World Championships and last but not least earned a Gold Medal at the Nagano Olympics. Everyone in my class was very sad when my presentation came to the part where she died from cancer in March, 2000.

I also told them about the Sandra Schmirler Olympic Gold Park built in her home town of Bigger, Saskatchewan to honour her curling achievements and because of Sandra’s love for family and children a nonprofit Foundation for “Champions Start Small” was created by her family and friends after her death. The funds collected are used to care for premature babies and critically ill infants. Our own Queen Elizabeth Hospital in PEI has benefited from the Foundation. The nursery received a camera that helps test premature babies eyes and equipment for the care of the hearts and lungs of newborns.

Thank you Sandra for being such an inspiration to me.”

Tie-breaking finish for 15th annual Golf Tourney at Countryview

The weather was perfect – sunny with a high around 21 degrees, and a light breeze, as around 55 participants teed off with a “shotgun” (sounded more like an air-horn!) start for the 15th annual Cornwall Curling Club 9 hole best-ball golf tournament at beautiful Countryview Golf Club.

Here’s Bill Hope,  Shelley Ebbett, and Edgar Coffin showing off their long drive skills:

The long 9th hole had some special rules, with the golfers having to alternate 9 iron shots until the green, and then use a curling broom to putt. Six seemed to be the  popular score for the par four hole using these rules. Here’s organizer Bob Fowler showing how to putt with a curling broom:

z

After playing their 9 holes, each team headed back to the clubhouse for a burger and a drink.

Some even took the opportunity for a team photo.

It was time for the prizes, with Bob, and co-organizer Jim Orr taking to the stage (deck).

The first prize of the day went to the “Most Honest” golfing team, of Brent Irving, Sandy Hope, Rebeca Rolfe, and Lester Callbeck (they won beer cozies).

Gord Peters was a double winner, taking home both the Men’s Closest to the Pin and the Men’s Longest Drive honours.

For the third year in a row, no-one was able to put the ball on the green for the ladies’ Closest to the Pin award, so a draw was held, with Cathy MacDougall getting the prize. The ladies’ Longest Drive was hit by Kim Glydon.

Next was a new prize this year, with Donald Weeks winning the coveted “Shortest Drive” honours.

Now it was time to announce the winning team. But wait, there’s a tie, with official scorekeeper Paul Durant confirming that the Brad Gardiner and Len Gotell teams both finished with a score of 35. Fortunately, there are rules for tiebreaking, something called “retrogression”, where the team with the highest score on the last hole wins (don’t ask me why it’s not the lowest score – this is what the rule states!). The Gotell team had a 5 on that hole, while the Gardiner foursome recorded a six, so the Brad Gardiner team were awarded the trophy.

Congratulations to Brad. along with teammates Krista Affleck, Tracy MacDonald, and John Berry!

Next up were the door prizes, with each winner drawing a number for their prizes, which included T-shirts, glassware, Curling Club gift certificates, Countryview green fees (even course owner Carl Currie won one, but he managed to swap with someone else!), golf balls, and lots of other prizes.

Organizers Bob Fowler and Jim Orr thanked everyone for coming, and invited them to have some carrot cake, in honour of 15 years of hosting this event by sponsor Countryview Golf Club. They also thanked the event sponsors, including Marg Stewart, KFC, Prebilt Steel, Eastern Auto Supply, PEI Storm basketball team, Kenmac Energy, the Cornwall Curling Club, Traction Heavy Duty Parts, and Countryiew Golf Club.

IMG_4808

On behalf of the Cornwall Curling Club Board of Directors, Derek MacEwen thanked Bob and Jim, along with everyone else who helped out (Paul Durant, Karen Currie and the rest of the Currie family), along with the event sponsors and Countryview, for their long term hosting of this event.

That concludes the Cornwall Curling Club’s activities for the 2014-2015 season. Enjoy your summer, and we’ll see everyone (and our newly reconditioned rocks) back at the Club on Oct. 7 for returning members registration night!

Here is the “shotgun” start (all teams start at once, from separate holes) draw for the Cornwall Curling Club’s 15th annual golf tournament at Countryview Golf Club, Route 19 in Fairview. All players are required to be there by 8:30 am this Saturday, June 20, to review the rules and allow time to make your way to your respective tees by 9 am start time. Current forecast for Saturday is for sunny skies and a high of 21C – perfect for golfing!

By the way, Countryview is offering a special rate for those who would like to rent a power cart – just $10 (only $5 per person if you share with a teammate). Call Countryview in advance to reserve.

Hole #6: Gord Peters, Cathy MacDougall, Mary Plamondon, Eric LeBlanc|

Hole #7: Tom Dunn, Kim Glydon, Jean Anderson, Greg Groves

Hole #8: Paul Durant,, John Dunsford, Bryan Sutherland, Carol Sweetapple
Hole #9: Bill Hope, Shelley Ebbett, Derek MacEwen, Edgar Coffin

Here are the tournament rules:

This is a 9 hole  “best ball” scramble format, which means you have to use two tee shots from each player before you reach the 9th hole. Each player will tee off, and you will then decide whose shot to use for that hole. Following the tee shot, each player will hit from where the “best” ball from the team landed, and you will continue to do this until a ball is in the hole.

Special 9th hole rules:

Since it is the “9”th hole, you will only be using a 9 iron until it’s time to putt. When you reach the 9th hole, you will have to choose which player will hit off the tee (with a 9 iron). Players will then shoot in turn (with 9 irons) until you are on the green. Once you are on the green, you will go back to the best ball “scramble” format. When putting, you are required to use the designated putter, which is a curling broom! You must putt with the broom brush side down. Please leave the broom at the side of the green for the next team.

As well as overall winners and door prizes (you have to be present at draw time to win these) there will be prizes for closest to the pin, longest drive, and (for the 1st time, I believe) shortest drive.

CLOSEST TO THE PIN FOR LADIES WILL BE HOLE # 2
CLOSEST TO THE PIN FOR MEN WILL BE HOLE # 8
LONGEST DRIVE FOR LADIES IS HOLE # 7
LONGEST DRIVE FOR MEN IS HOLE # 4
SHORTEST DRIVE FOR EVERYONE IS HOLE # 6
Above all, remember, this is a fun tournament, so don’t take things too seriously – it’s not the Canadian Open!

Thanks to our volunteers, the Road Builders dinner was a big success!

The Cornwall Curling Club is fortunate to have many volunteers, who are willing to help out whenever we put on a big event. For the second year in a row, those volunteers came out in force for our catering of the PEI Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association’s annual lobster and steak dinner. This year’s event went like clockwork, and everything was ready and served in jig time. This event is a great fundraiser for our Club.

lobstersroadbuildersPhoto: Lobsters on the plate ready to be served

Thanks to Barry Craswell for taking on overall management of the event, to our lobster cutters, including Joe MacKinnon, Bryan Sutherland, Ray Biagé, Roy Coffin,  to our barbecue crew, including Derek MacEwen, Paul Field, Grant Crockett, to our setup crew, including Ken Praught, Kimball Blanchard, Frank Martin, and Lew Black, to our food prep and serving crew, headed up by Carlene Peters, and including Helen Smith, Carol Sweetapple, Myrna Craswell, Myrna Sanderson, Carolyn Crockett, Elaine Hughes, Bertha Praught, Ruth Stavert, Darlene Howlett, Hélène LaPalme, Bernie Field, Cathy MacDougall, Arleen Harris, Jessie MacPhail, Pat McCardle, Paula Ling, Phyllis Cole, Val MacLean and her friends Valerie and Marina. Note that there was also lots of overlap, with people stepping up to do more than one of these tasks. Thanks also to Bev McCormick and Al MacCormac, who kept the bar lines short, and helped us find everything, too!

A special welcome to the Praughts, who have recently moved to Cornwall from Summerside.  Ken is planning to be a member in the fall.

By all reports, the Road Builders were very pleased with the event!

Next up: our annual Golf Tourney on the 20th!

AGM Wrapup

A good crowd was on hand last evening at the air-conditioned Cornwall Curling Club for our Annual General Meeting. President Frank Martin and the Board of Directors members who chaired the various committees reported that it was another excellent season at the Club, with highlights including a large number of winning teams and curlers at the local through national levels, a huge Junior program (possibly the largest on the Island), and full weeknight and daytime draws. The weekends were packed with rentals, which showed a 23% increase in revenue from last year, Club bonspiels, which were all quite successful, and four Sunday nights where PEI Newcomers were introduced to curling, thanks to a provincial grant and a rental by the Newcomers Association of PEI. Also successful, even with some inclement weather, was the Friday night Drop In sessions, with a high of 30 curlers, many of them new to the Club,  attending on the final night. Catering the lobster and steak meal for the Road Builders Assoc. was also a success, raising about $1700, so it was decided to do it again this year (June 4).

Membership was on par with the previous season, which is no small feat, as enrollment has declined in many curling facilities across the country. The Club’s rocks have been sent to Ontario for refurbishment thanks to financial assistance provided by a provincial grant, a successful “Cornwall Rocks!” fundraiser, a donation from the Daytime Curlers, and a loan from the Town of Cornwall. Biggest capital expense last year was around $1000 to replace rusted burners in the ice house propane heaters. Summer renovations planned by our landlords, the Town of Cornwall, include replacing the ice shed walkway, which is getting weak, and carpets, by the windows.

Financially it was a good year, despite a shorter season due to an early Easter, and some lost days due to snowy weather, with a net income of $1700, up about $700 from the previous year.

President Martin thanked  the Board Members, staff, volunteers, and all Club members for another great season. He gave special thanks to the four Board members who have finished their terms on the Board – Krista Affleck, Leonard Gotell, Joe MacKinnon, and Paul Neima, along with Lew Black, who was appointed by the Daytime Curlers as their representative. Four new Board members were acclaimed: Colleen MacDonald, Kim MacDonald, Lisa MacEachern, and Alan Mason, with the Daytime Curlers selecting Jim Orr as their representative on the Board. The new Board will meet June 15 at 6:30 pm at the Club.

There were no items discussed during the Open Discussion period at the conclusion of the meeting.

Volunteers needed to help out with Road Builders dinner

roadbuilders

As a fundraiser for the Club, we have again agreed to prepare and serve a lobster (with steak option) dinner for the PEI Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association, this time on Thursday June 4, and need volunteers to help out with preparation and serving. We are contacting those who helped out last year, but can always use more volunteers. The Road Builders are the same group who have a bonspiel and a BBQ steak lunch at our Club every winter. They have a reception at 6:30, and dinner at 7:30 pm, at the Club and the upstairs area. Click for details on the Roadbuilders website.

If you can lend a hand, please email me at derek@derekmacewen.com, let me know what you are interested in volunteering for, and we will add you to the list.

Based on last year’s event, the greatest need is for servers of the meals. Unlike the winter event, this is a sit-down meal, with the food brought to the tables (along with extra food later, if they want).

We estimate that we need volunteers for the following:

Cutting and preparing previously-cooked lobster (downstairs) at 1:30 pm:

Food prep (downstairs) at 3 pm:

Food prep (downstairs) at 4 pm:

Setting up upstairs tables and place settings (upstairs) at 4 pm (or earlier if space is available)

Working the barbecues (6:30 pm)

Serving the tables, cleanup – 7 pm (meal starts at 7:30 pm)

Teardown and cleanup – following the meal.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

The Cornwall Curling Club is looking for an assistant icemaker

Our icemaker for many years, Lance Lowther, is, understandably, getting tired of 7 day work weeks during the curling season, and would like some help starting in the fall. He currently has a number of people who provide assistance as needed, but we are seeking someone who would like to take on some of the icemaker duties, under his tutelage, and might be interested in taking on the job full time if required in the future. Experience is always an asset, but is not required. We would prefer someone who lives near the Club, as some of the work is done early in the morning when the roads may not be optimal, and work may require several trips to the Club each day to prepare the ice between draws. Hours and salary to be determined, based on experience, qualifications, and requirements, but would likely be a couple of days a week to start. This is NOT a 9-5 job. Icemaking work goes seven days a week during the curling season, depending on events scheduled, and can be very demanding during provincial, regional, and national championships that may be hosted from time to time. The work can at times be physically demanding, involving lugging hoses, carrying water in a back pack, etc. Work begins each year in early October, and wraps up in early April.

If you think you may be interested in this challenge, or would like more info, get in touch with Club President Frank Martin, at (home) 628-1920, (work) 368-4130 or email flmartin@edu.pe.ca

The men’s and women’s teams from the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton picked up big wins this afternoon at the Travelers Curling Club Championship at the Crapaud Community Curling Club, with the Freddy Fraser foursome edging out Charlottetown’s John Desrosiers team 7-6 in an extra end to win the men’s championship, and the Iva Griffin rink stealing the final end in the women’s championship round to hand Cornwall’s Lisa Jackson team their first loss of the event, and force a deciding game between the two teams at 7 pm.

Fraser, whose team includes Daryl MacDonald at third, second Blaine Hutt, and lead John Ellsworth, was trailing 4-3 after five ends, when they picked up a triple in six. The Griffin team, who had lost 9-6 to Jackson in their previous encounter, were trailing 4-0 after the first end this afternoon, with the teams trading singles in the next two ends, but narrowed the gap to 5-4 with a fourth end triple. Jackson was kept to a single in five, with Griffin scoring a tying deuce in six. Jackson blanked the seventh to have last rock advantage coming home, but gave up a steal of 1. Final score: Griffin 7, Jackson 6.  The rules for this event dictate that if a team loses the first championship round game after going undefeated in round robin play, there will be a second “sudden death” game to decide the champion. That game goes at 7 pm. Playing with Griffin are Bobby-Jean MacMillan, Wendy Fraser, and Alison Griffin, while Carolyn Coulson, Melissa Morrow, and Jody Murphy round out the Jackson squad.

The Freddy Fraser team and the women’s winner will advance to the national Travelers Curling Club Championship, November 23-28, 2015 at the Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club, in Ottawa Ontario.

Skins format PEI Brewing Company Closing spiel a big success!

Judging from all the positive comments, the PEI Brewing Company Closing Skins Spiel, held this weekend was a success!! Although there were a few curlers, or maybe it was just one (Carlene), who had a difficult time comprehending the ‘hammer’ rule, many curlers suggested the same format for next year’s closing spiel.

The Red Team won the most skins with a total of $145,000.00, while the Blue Team had a total of $143,000.00. GO RED TEAM GO!! For those members who were not present at the event, please don’t get excited, as this was only Monopoly money!
