Cornwall’s Berry picks up win in last draw at the Canadian Seniors (Curling Canada)

While the match-ups for the semifinals have yet to be determined, the four teams who will play in those semifinals has been decided at the 2015 Everest Canadian Senior Men’s Championship at the Thistle C.C. in Edmonton.

Alberta’s Glen Hansen and Manitoba’s Randy Neufeld will play tonight to determine the number one seed and will play Québec’s Ted Butler in one semifinal.  The loser of that game will meet New Brunswick’s Wayne Tallon, the 2014 World Senior champion, in the other semifinal.

Tallon and Butler squared off earlier today. The two skips are well-acquainted with each other from Tallon’s days in Ottawa. Tallon had to win this game otherwise his fate was in the hands of Nova Scotia’s Wayne Sangster. Had Tallon lost, Sangster would have had to defeat Ontario’s Jeff McCrady since the Ottawa team held the tiebreaker against New Brunswick because of a 5-4 win earlier in the week. The game was not as critical for Butler, as he would advance to the final four regardless of the outcome since he owned the tiebreaker over McCrady. And use that tiebreaker he did, as he managed only one point against a relentless New Brunswick team. Butler had a chance to steal in the sixth end to the score, but Mike Kennedy, fourth stone thrower for New Brunswick, made a perfect raise-takeout for two and took full control of the game. The final score was 6-1, conceded in the seventh when Tallon stole two more points.  Tallon finished at 5-2 while Butler is 4-3.

The other men’s championship pool game this afternoon, featured B.C.’s Wes Craig against Saskatchewan’s Glen Despins. Though neither team had a chance to make the playoffs, they curled an interesting game with good shotmaking. Tied coming home without last stone, Despins needed to bump his stone two feet to the button and into a pocket of B.C. stones. He was just a touch light, ending the game without Craig having to play his last stone. The final score was 5-4. B.C. and Saskatchewan will finish seventh and eighth overall.

The seeding pools closed out their play this afternoon as well with P.E.I.’s Rod MacDonald finishing tied for first with Northern Ontario’s Al Hackner and Northwest Territories’ Glen Hudy each at 4-5. The records between the three teams was 1-1, therefore the tie for ranking was decided by the draw shot distance for games in the seeding pool. P.E.I. finished ninth overall, Northern Ontario 10th and N.W.T. 11th. In this draw, P.E.I. defeated Yukon’s Walter Wallingham 5-2, Hackner beat Glen Goss of N.L. 7-3 and Hudy’s Yellowknife team beat Nunavut’s Ed Sattelberger 5-2. N.L. finishes 12th, Nunavut 13th and the Yukon 14th for next year’s seeding.

In one last game for the women’s seeding pool, P.E.I.’s Shirley Berry won 13-1 over Nunavut’s Robin Manoll. The five team seeding pool finished with Ontario’s Kathy Brown (4-0) ranked ninth for 2016 followed by New Brunswick’s Shelly Graham (10th), N.W.T.’s Debbie Moss (11th), P.E.I.’s Shirley Berry (12th) and Nunavut’s Robin Manoll (13th).  Yukon will be seeded 14th for 2016 since they did not play this year.

Cornwall women 1-0, men 0-2 after Travelers opening day

Three draws are in the books after opening day action at the provincial Travelers Curling Club Championship at the Crapaud Community Curling Club.

In the men’s division, with representatives from all seven PEI dedicated curling facilities, the Alan Inman foursome from the host club and the John Desrosiers rink from the Charlottetown Curling Complex are 2-0, while the Barry Cameron team from the Silver Fox, the Freddy Fraser team from the Western Community club in Alberton, and the Donald Clarey team from Montague all have a 1-1 win-loss record. Wednesday evening Ladder League season wrapup

The Wednesday Evening Ladder League had another great season, thankfully missing last season’s weather problems, at least until the final round, when we missed two of the six weeks in the already-shortened round.

The A pool in the last round was won by the Paul Durant rink, who also won round two. This time, the Durant foursome won all four games played, the only team to do so.

The B pool was more complicated, with four teams, skipped by Mark MacDonald, Greg Groves, Paul Neima, and Ray Biagé, winning three of the four games. The MacDonald rink only managed to field two players for the final game (the rules require three players to avoid a default), which would give them zero instead of 1 points, so they would be eliminated from the results, leaving three teams (the MacDonald rink aren’t going home empty-handed, though, having won a previous round).

Looking at head to head results, Groves beat Biagé but lost to Neima. Neima beat Groves, but did not play Biagé. Biagé lost to Groves, and did not play Neima. Since the three teams did not all play each other we cannot look at the head to head results or the score differentials against each other, and have to go to total scores against all the teams they played.

Biagé total score: 29, Neima total score: 32, Groves total score: 32 (for the record, MacDonald had 28). It’s a points tie between the Groves and Neima rinks!  Since Neima beat Groves in their round robin encounter, we’re awarding the prize to the Neima rink.

Here are the sponsors and winning teams for all three rounds.

Round three A Pool, sponsored by New Glasgow Lobster Suppers (gift certificates not yet avail. – to be mailed out):
Paul Durant, Danny Kneabone, Alan Acorn, Aaron Campbell

Round three B Pool, sponsored by Royal Garden (Gift. cert.) and Gass’s General Store (ball caps) – prizes available – will be handed out at closing spiel.
Paul Neima, Joe Callaghan, Ankur Deshpande, Alan Mason

Round two A pool, sponsored by Murphys Cornwall Pharmacy (gift cards – already presented))
Paul Durant, Danny Kneabone, Alan Acorn, Aaron Campbell

Round two B pool, sponsored by Griffin’s Auto Service (gift certificates not yet available – will be mailed out):
Gord Peters, Hank Kamphuis, Gerald Dykerman, Pat MacInnis

Round One, both pools sponsored by Lowther Snow Removal. Prizes (Club gift certificates) have already been handed out.

A Pool:
Mark MacDonald, Brad Gardiner, Wayne Dalziel, Wayne Goodwin

B Pool:
Bob Fowler, Carl Currie, Thane Thompson, Danny Young

Thanks to our great sponsors, and to all 16 teams who took part this season. See you in the fall!

The provincial curling championship season comes to a close with two events this weekend — the Travelers Curling Club Championship, for men’s and women’s teams who have won their respective club championships, and the Advantage Communications / Curl PEI Junior Mixed, for mixed (two male, 2 female players) teams under the age of 21. Cornwall has both a men’s and a women’s team in the Travelers, and representatives on four out of the five junior mixed teams.

The Travelers takes place at the Crapaud Community Curling Club from Friday through Monday, while the Junior Mixed will be played at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside from Friday through Sunday. Live results from both championships will be available at CurlAtlantic.com/scoreboard.

The Provincial Travelers Curling Club Championship, for winners of the men’s and women’s Travelers championships from PEI curling facilities, will be held at the Crapaud Community Curling Club March 27-30 2015.  The provincial Travelers will use a round robin format with a Draw Scoring System instead of tiebreaking games. Games are eight ends. Men’s teams are entered from all seven PEI curling facilities, while there are five women’s rinks entered, from Western, the Silver Fox, Crapaud, Cornwall, and Montague. Winning teams will advance to the national Travelers Curling Club Championship, November 23-28, 2015 at the Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club, in Ottawa Ontario.

Event website: peicurling.com/travelers20142015/

A team based Draw Scoring System will be done after the first game. Each team, starting with the lead, will deliver a draw for points. Total score will be used to break ties at the end of the round robin. (same as National) (5 for button, 4 for 4ft., 3 for 8ft., 2 for 12ft., 1 for free guard zone)

Round robin draws go Friday through Sunday at 11 am, 3 pm, and 7 pm. The championship round goes Monday with the second and third place teams from the round robin squaring off at 11 am. The winner will face the first place team from the round robin at 3 pm. In the event that a team goes through the round robin undefeated, and then loses the 3 pm game, an extra game will take place between the two finalists, at 7 pm.

They won their two playoff games against NB and NS and claimed the Championship. This was the 5th Maritime championship for Gloria and Ruth in the 6 year history of the event.

The 2016 Maritime Stick Curling Championship will be hosted by PEI in March at a site to be determined later. Stick Curling in PEI is sponsored by the Ferguson Logan Funeral Home, Kinkora Enterprises (Maureen Callaghan), and Morley Annear Limited.

Cornwall’s Lenentine rink win berth in Atlantic U18 Ch’ships

The Curl PEI Provincial Under 18 Curling Championships are over at the Crapaud Community Curling Club, with the four rinks who will advance to the Atlantic Under 18 championships from April 3-5 in Montague decided.  Because PEI is the host province, there will be two women’s and two men’s teams advancing this year. The women’s and men’s divisions of the provincials both had four teams entered.

The women’s division was decided on Sunday, with the Kaleigh Mackay foursome, who have recently competed in the Canada Games, and curl out of the Crapaud, Montague, and Charlottetown clubs, sweeping all three sections of the modified triple knockout round to win the U18 title without playing the Monday championship round. The Mackay rink won the A section final 5-3 over Lauren Moerike and her Charlottetown squad, and beat the Lauren Lenentine rink from Cornwall in the other two section finals, winning the B by an 8-4 score, and the low-scoring C final by a score of 3-2, in a game with four blank ends, where neither team scored more than a single point in an end. The Lenentine rink is awarded the runner-up position and a berth in the Atlantics because they won two of the three sections.

Rounding out the runner-up Lenentine foursome are third Meghan Ching, second stone Rachel O’Connor, and lead Breanne Burgoyne. The team is coached by Pat and Aleya Quilty.

The men’s championship was won on Monday morning, with the Leslie Noye rink from the Western Community Curling Club, who won two of the three modified triple knockout sections, beating the Alex MacFadyen rink, who won the other section, by a 5-2 score in the championship game, with Noye stealing ends six and seven, and running MacFadyen out of rocks in the 8th end.

Noye won the A final 5-4 over Donald DeWolfe of Cornwall, and the C,  7-4 over MacFadyen, while MacFadyen won the B – beating MacFadyen 7-3.

Curling with Noye were third Jacob Wilkins, second Dylan Vincent, and lead Alex Gallant, with coach Roger Gavin. Completing the runner-up MacFadyen team were third James Dalton, second Matthew MacDonald, and lead Parker MacFadyen. The team is coached by Dave MacFadyen.

Men’s winner and runner-up photos are not yet available.

The MacKay, Noye, Lenentine, and MacFadyen rinks now advance to the Atlantic Under 18 Curling Championships, April 3-5 at the Montague Curling Club.

Looking for organizers for annual golf tourney

As most of you know, we have an annual 9 hole, best ball, golf tourney and barbecue every year at Countryview Golf Club. Bob Fowler, who has been organizing it for many years, would like to step away from it, and let someone else do the organizing.
countryviewclubhouse(no, this picture was NOT taken today!)

The good thing about organizing this is that the event has regular sponsors for most of the prizes, and  the golf course management and staff know the event and many of our club members well, and are willing to provide advice, too. If you could like to help out, get in touch with a Board of Directors member, or Bev our manager.

Cornwall’s Mitchell Schut rink goes undefeated to win Provincial KFC Under 13 curling title

The Mitchell Schut team from the Cornwall Curling Club went undefeated this weekend at the Montague Curling Club to win the KFC Provincial Under 13 Curling Championship, beating the Alexis Burris rink from the Crapaud Community Curling Club by a 5-2 score in this afternoon’s final.

Schut, who also won the event two years ago, and finished third last year, was playing with third Liam Kelly, second Michael MacEwen, and lead stone David Drake, with coach Nancy Yeo. The Schut rink, after finishing first place in their pool, played the second place team in the other pool, another Cornwall rink skipped by Rachel MacLean, in the semi-finals Sunday afternoon, scoring a triple in the final end for a 6-3 win. The Burris team, which includes third Sydney Howatt, second Meghan Sherren, and lead Madelyn Cantwell, with coach Phyllis Stretch, finished second in their pool with a 3-2 win-loss record, and beat the Cruz Pineau rink from the Silver Fox in their semi.

In the final, Burris took a single with hammer in the first end, with Schut hitting for a deuce in the second. Burris was facing three Schut counters in the third end, and hit for a single point to tie the game at 3-3 going into the third end break. Schut drew for a pair in the fourth, and stole a single in the fifth when Burris’ draw was a few inches light. This gave Schut a 5-2 lead coming home, but without last rock advantage. In the final end, the Schut rink hit everything they could, and ran the Burris team out of rocks.

Unbeaten Cornwall rinks square off Sun. morning at KFC U13 ch’ship, MacFadyen and Mackay rinks win U18 B sections

kfcsogood

There will be no unbeaten teams remaining following the last round robin draw at 10 am on Sunday morning at the KFC Provincial Under 13 Curling Championships at the Montague Curling Club, as the two teams with perfect records, the Mitchell Schut and Rachel MacLean teams, both from the Cornwall Curling Club, will play each other. The top two teams in both pools, based on a points system, will then advance to the semi-finals, with 1st place in the A pool playing 2nd place in the B pool in one semi, and 1st place B taking on 2nd place A in the other. The winners then advance to the 5 pm finals.

As it sits now, Schut is first in the A pool with 51 points, followed by Alexis Burris of Crapaud with 27.5, Hayden Ford of Cornwall with 19, and Sam Shaw from Montague with 10. In the B pool MacLean has 31.5 points with 1 game left, Jordan Dunphy-Condon from Summerside has already finished round robin play with 24 points, while  Cruz Pineau, also from Summerside with 22 points and Emily Sanderson from Montague with 14 both have one game remaining in round robin play.

The 10 am games see Schut take on MacLean, Burris face Sanderson, Ford play Pineau, and Sam Shaw battle Katie Shaw.

Meanwhile, at the Curl PEI Under 18 championships in Crapaud, the defending champion Alex MacFadyen rink from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside have captured the men’s B section final in the modified triple knockout draw, beating the Leslie Noye foursome from the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton by a 7-3 score in the B final. Noye won the A final on Friday, beating Cornwall’s Donald DeWolfe team. The C semi-final goes Sunday at 10 am, with DeWolfe playing Noye. The winner then plays Alex MacFadyen in the C final at 2 pm. The section winners then advance to the championship round Monday at 10am and, if necessary, 2 pm.

The U18 women’s A and B finals were both won by the Kaleigh Mackay team from Crapaud, Montague, and Charlottetown, recently back from the Canada Games in Prince George BC. They won the B final today 8-4 over the Lauren Lenentine squad from Cornwall. The C semi-final at 10 am Sunday sees Lenentine play Lauren Moerike from Charlottetown, with the winner advancing to the 2 pm C final against Mackay.

The winners of the 3 modified triple knockout section finals then advance to the two game championship round Monday at 10am and, if necessary, 2 pm. If Mackay wins all three section finals, she will win the title, and the championship round will not be played. If either Lenentine or Moerike win the C final, they will take on Mackay in both section finals, but have to win both to take the title, while a Mackay win in either will give them the championship.

The winners and runners-up from the Under 18 men’s and women’s championships will advance to the Atlantic Under 18 Championships, April 3-5 in Montague.

Cornwall’s Katie Fullerton among 4 PEI curlers at the Mixed Doubles Trials, starting Wednesday in Ottawa (Curling Canada/Curl PEI)

Canada’s best mixed doubles curling teams, including four curlers from PEI,  return to the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club March 11-15 for the 2015 Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Trials.

Among those competing are the winners of the PEI trials in December — the duo of Kyle Holland and Katie Fullerton from the Charlottetown Curling Complex and the Cornwall Curling Club, respectively. Also taking part are PEI Tankard (men’s) champion skip Adam Casey, competing with Nova Scotia’s Marie Christianson, and PEI Tankard lead Robbie Doherty teamed with Patty Wallingham from the Yukon. These two entries are among 16 teams from open invitations decided by the Order of Merit of the curlers as of Dec. 31, 2014. The Order of Merit is based exclusively on the CCA’s Canadian Team Ranking System (CTRS).

A total of 32 teams (one man, one woman) are competing in this year’s Trials, with the teams divided into four round-robin pools of eight, with the top two from each pool and the next four best round-robin records moving onto the 12-team single-knockout playoff round. Here are the teams and pools:
http://cloudfront10.curling.ca/2015mixeddoubles/files/2015/02/pool-assignment-final-version3.jpg
The 32 participating teams in Ottawa were determined by the following:
1.    Each of the 14 provincial/territorial curling associations selected one team.
2.    The winning four-player team at the 2015 Canadian Mixed Championship in North Bay, Ont., received two entries.
3.    The balance is composed of open invitations, with each team’s participating status decided by Order of Merit.
The Hunt Club hosted the highly successful 2014 edition of the Trials, which will determine Canada’s representative for the 2015 World Mixed Doubles Championship in Sochi, Russia in April.

The Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club will play host to the 2015 Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Trials. (Photo, courtesy Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club)

It will be the third edition of the Trials; the CCA recently approved a motion to extend a two-year trial for the event to a third year as efforts are ongoing by the World Curling Federation to have the discipline included as an Olympic medal sport, as soon as the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

“We’re optimistic that the International Olympic Committee will see the benefits of adding another curling medal to the program, and we’re doing our part as an association to show that we’re behind that push,” said Greg Stremlaw, Chief Executive Officer of the CCA. “We’ve had nothing but positive feedback from the first two Canadian Mixed Doubles Trials, and we know the Hunt Club will do another superb job in hosting in 2015.”

“We had great, positive feedback from the curlers and officials after we hosted the 2014 Canadian Mixed Doubles Trials,” said Bill Duck, curling co-ordinator for the Hunt Club. “We were eager to bring the event back, and we know curlers and fans will be treated to first-class conditions and a first-class event.”

At the 2014 Trials, the husband-and-wife pairing of Wayne and Kim Tuck of Ilderton, Ont., claimed gold, beating Alberta’s Kalynn Park and Charley Thomas 8-5 in the final. The Tucks went on to finish with a 7-1 round-robin record at the 2014 World Mixed Doubles Championship in Dumfries, Scotland, but lost in the first round of the playoffs to Austria’s Claudia Fischer and Christian Roth to finish ninth overall.

At the inaugural 2013 Canadian Mixed Doubles Trials, in Leduc, Alta., the Quebec pair of Robert Desjardins and Isabelle Néron won the title, and went on to finish 10th at the World Mixed Doubles Championship in Fredericton, N.B.

Previously, Canada’s teams for the World Mixed Doubles Championship comprised two members of the winning team at the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship. In 2008, Canada (Susan O’Connor and Dean Ross) finished fifth while in 2009, Canada earned a bronze medal with a third-place finish by Sean Grassie and Allison Nimik (still Canada’s only medal at the World Mixed Doubles). In 2010, Canada did not compete because the Icelandic volcanic ash caused the temporary cancellation of air travel which prevented Mark Dacey and Heather Smith from arriving in time for the competition.

In 2011, Canada’s Rebecca Jean MacDonald and Robert Campbell, from Charlottetown P.E.I., finished 12th, while in 2012, Canada’s Chantelle Eberle and Dean Hicke were sixth.

The Mixed Doubles game format is played over eight ends (instead of the usual 10). Each team has only six stones and one of those stones from each team is prepositioned on the centre line before every end of play. One player delivers the first and last stones of the end while the other player throws the second, third and fourth stones. If they choose to, the two players may swap positions from one end to the next. Both team members are also allowed to sweep.

The women’s A section winner was Kaleigh Mackay and her Crapaud, Montague, and Charlottetown combined team. They were trailing Lauren Moerike of Charlottetown 3-2 after six ends, but scored a deuce in seven and stole a single in eight for the win.

Two six-enders (Stick equiv. of 8 ender) scored by Cornwall stick players at 55+ Games!

Two six-enders were scored in Stick Curling at the Vogue Optical 55+ games held in Charlottetown last week. Since there are only six rocks thrown per team per end in 2 person Stick Curling, a Six-Ender is the equivalent of an Eight-Ender in regular curling. The Six-Enders were scored by Gloria Clarke and Ruth Stavert, and by Alva Clarey and Bryan Sutherland. Both duos are from the Cornwall Curling Club, who swept all the medals in Stick Curling at the Games.

Good news for Olympic curling fans! Summerside hosting Pre-Trials in 2017

(Curling Canada) The road for Canada’s bid to become the first country to repeat as men’s and women’s Olympic curling gold-medallists will go through Summerside PEI and Ottawa, it was announced today by Curling Canada.

Ottawa’s Canadian Tire Centre will play host to the 2017 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings from Dec. 2-10, while the final qualifying tournament for that event, the Road to the Roar Pre-Trials, will take place Nov. 6-12 at Credit Union Place in Summerside.

cupCredit Union Place will play host to the 2017 Road to the Roar Pre-Trials.

It will be the first time Summerside’s Credit Union Place has hosted a Curling Canada Season of Champions event. The 4,228-seat arena is home to the Summerside Western Capitals of the Maritime Junior A Hockey League. [The arena has hosted Grand Slam of Curling events in the past].

It will be the first time a major curling event has been staged at the Canadian Tire Centre, the 19,153-seat home of the National Hockey League’s Ottawa Senators. But the city has hosted numerous curling events over the years, and will play host to the 2016 Tim Hortons Brier, March 5-13.

“We received an amazing response to the Request for Proposal we put out to host these events, and it was an extremely hard decision that came right down to the wire,” said Greg Stremlaw, Curling Canada’s Chief Executive Officer. “All of the candidate cities put in superb bids, and once we got to our shortlist, we knew that we had nothing but winning proposals on our hands. It’s a testament to the popularity of our sport, and these events, that there was so much interest in hosting them, and we know Ottawa and Summerside will put on terrific shows in 2017.”

The process for determining the competing teams for both the Road to the Roar and the Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings, as well as the formats for both events, will be announced before the end of this curling season. The winner of the Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings will represent Canada at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

This will mark the fourth time that Tim Hortons has sponsored the Trials, following the 2005, 2009 and 2013 editions; that’s in addition to one of North America’s leading quick-service restaurant chains being the title sponsor of the Tim Hortons Brier.

“The commitment Tim Hortons has shown to the sport of curling speaks for itself,” said Stremlaw. “Tim Hortons has repeatedly gone above and beyond to demonstrate its passion and enthusiasm for making our events special and memorable, and they continue to play a significant role in raising the profile of our sport.”

TSN/RDS2, the official broadcast partner of Curling Canada’s Season of Champions series, will provide complete draw-by-draw coverage of both events, the first time the Road to the Roar Pre-Trials has been broadcasted from start to finish.

“Our partners at TSN have demonstrated time and time again that their passion and dedication to the sport of curling has no match,” said Stremlaw. “We’re ecstatic that TSN will be showing curling fans unprecedented coverage of the events that will decide our teams that will play in Pyeongchang.”

Already qualified for the Road to the Roar Pre-Trials are the winners of the 2014 Home Hardware Canada Cup, presented by Meridian Manufacturing — men’s champ Mike McEwen of Winnipeg and women’s champ Val Sweeting of Edmonton. Also in the Pre-Trials field is recently crowned Scotties Tournament of Hearts champion Jennifer Jones of Winnipeg, while the winner of this week’s Tim Hortons Brier, presented by SecurTek Monitoring Solutions, in Calgary also will earn a Pre-Trials berth.

It was Team Jones and the Brad Jacobs team from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., that prevailed at the 2013 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings in Winnipeg to qualify for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, where they produced double gold for Canada — the first time one nation has swept the Olympic curling competition. While Team Jones pre-qualified for the Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings, Team Jacobs needed to come out of the Road to the Roar Pre-Trials in Kitchener, Ont., to have the chance to play for Olympic gold.

Canadian curling teams have reached the podium in every Olympic curling competition since the sport was re-introduced as a medal sport in 1998 at Nagano, Japan.

The first men’s and women’s direct qualifiers for the 2017 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings will be decided at the 2015 Home Hardware Canada Cup, Dec. 2-6 in Grande Prairie, Alta.

Cornwall’s DeWolfe rink repeats at U16 boy’s winners, Doyle team comes on strong at end to win girl’s

The Curl PEI Provincial Under 16 Curling Championship concluded this afternoon at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary, with the Donald DeWolfe team from Cornwall repeating as champs in the three team boy’s division, while the Maria Doyle rink from the Silver Fox club in Summerside, who went 0-3 in the four team girl’s round robin, came on strong in the championship round to win the girl’s event.

DeWolfe who finished round robin play in first place, with a 3-1 win-loss record, beat the Alex Gallant rink from the Fox by an 8-3 score in the boy’s final, scoring a triple in the third end, and deuces in ends five and seven. Gallant and Cornwall’s Mitchell Schut  were tied at 1 win and two losses going into the morning draw, but a five point fifth end was a key factor Gallant’s  9-7 win over the young Schut team, and advanced them to the final.

Other members of the winning DeWolfe team are third Jacob Wilkins, second Logan Maker, and lead Nick Johnston, with Lori Robinson taking on the coaching duties. The Rod MacDonald and Wendy Gallant-coached Gallant squad includes third stone Connor Lilly, second AJ Cahill, and lead Luke Arsenault.

The girl’s semi-finals this morning saw the undefeated (3-0) first place team from Cornwall, skipped by Kristie Rogers, taking on the last place Doyle rink, with Doyle, down 5-1 after three, tying the game with deuces in ends four and five. The sixth was blanked, and the teams traded deuces to go into an extra end, which Doyle won by a single point for a 7-6 final. The other semi saw second place Lauren Moerike and her Charlottetown/Cornwall team (2-1) down Crapaud’s Sierra Clyke rink (1-2) by a 10-3 score, taking 5 points in the first end, then stealing 1 and 2 points to lead 8-0 in a game that lasted only until the fifth end.

This set up the Moerike vs Doyle final, with Moerike taking a first end deuce with hammer, but Doyle responding with a single and steals of 3 and 1 point to take a 5-2 lead at the 4th end break. Moerike then took the lead with four points in the fifth end, but Doyle took singles in the next three ends for an 8-6 victory.

Rounding out the winning Maria Doyle team are third Maddison Moore, 2nd Gabrielle Gallant, and lead Abbie MacDonald, with coach Don Vickerson.  Lauren Lenentine, Tati Kelly, and Rachel O’Connor, with coach Kevin Moerike, complete the runner-up Moerike foursome.

Cornwall Rocks! bonspiel now accepting team entries

It has come to our attention that members appear to be more interested in a team registration format for Cornwall Rocks on March 6 & 7th. In an effort to encourage members to participate in this important fundraiser, we will now accept team or single registration. As a result, we will extend registration until Tuesday, March 3, 2015 at 5:00pm as the last possible deadline. If you have registered individually and wish to register as part of a team, please scratch your name off the single registration forms; however members who wish to remain as a single entry will be placed on a team. Anyone registered prior to Wednesday, Feb 25, will be given preference if we exceed total registration.
