Rod MacDonald rink wins PEI Credit Unions Senior Men’s title in Extra End

The Rod MacDonald rink from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside and the Charlottetown Curling Complex went undefeated in this year’s PEI Credit Unions Senior Men’s Curling Championship at the Montague Curling Club, sweeping all three modified triple knockout section finals, all against the Peter Gallant team from Charlottetown, to win the title without having to play a championship. The last game, the C final, took an extra end, with MacDonald scoring a single point for the 6-5 win.

MacDonald stole a deuce in the 1st end of the C final, but Gallant pulled ahead with a deuce and a stolen single. MacDonald responded with a deuce to lead 4-3 at the 4th end break. The fifth was blanked, and they traded singles in the next two ends to leave MacDonald one up coming home with hammer. gallant stole a single to force the extra, but couldn’t pull off another steal in the extra.

Other members of the MacDonald squad are Kevin Champion, Blair Weeks, and Mark Victor, while John Likely, Mark O’Rourke, and Mark Butler round out the runner-up Gallant team. MacDonald was runner-up in the event last year.

The Rod MacDonald rink, along with the women’s winner, the Shirley Berry team from Cornwall and Charlottetown, who won by default as they were the only entry in the women’s event, will advance to the 2015 Canadian Senior Curling Championships, March 21-28, 2015, in Edmonton, AB. Berry’s teammates are Sandy Hope, Shelley Ebbett and Arleen Harris, with coaches Butch McGee and Bill Hope. Six teams took part in the Senior Men’s event.

Hope out, MacDonald to face Gallant again in 3rd section final at Seniors. MacDonald could win title this afternoon

seniors

The Rod MacDonald rink from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside and the Charlottetown Curling Complex are just one win away from winning the PEI Credit Unions Provincial Senior Men’s Curling Championship at the Montague Curling Club.  As they have in the A and B section finals of the modified triple knockout draw, the MacDonald rink will take on Charlottetown’s Peter Gallant foursome in the C final, at 2 this afternoon. If MacDonald wins, he will take the title, as he would have won all three sections, making a championship round unnecessary. If Gallant wins, the teams will advance to the two game championship round at 10 am, and, if needed, 2 pm on Wednesday. MacDonald would take the title if he won either game, while Gallant would have to win both.

Other members of the MacDonald squad are Kevin Champion, Blair Weeks, and Mark Victor, while John Likely, Mark O’Rourke, and Mark Butler round out the Gallant team.

Gallant advanced to the C final with a 9-3 win over Bill Hope of Charlottetown in today’s 10 am draw, leading 5-3 after six ends, and taking four points in the seventh.

The Senior men’s champions, along with the women’s winner, the Shirley Berry team from Cornwall and Charlottetown, who won by default as they were the only entry in the women’s event, will advance to the 2015 Canadian Senior Curling Championships, March 21-28, 2015, in Edmonton, AB.

Cornwall curlers enjoying the 55+ Games

Cornwall curlers are getting lots of media coverage at the 55+ Games in Charlottetown, with Jean Anderson and Barry Craswell interviewed on CBC Compass last night, and Kimball Blanchard featured in The Guardian today! Thanks for all the kinds words for both the sport and our Club!

kimball2Kimball Blanchard says curling is a wonderful winter activity.

GUARDIAN PHOTO BY KAYLA FRASER

Here’s an excerpt from today’s story:

Kimball Blanchard curls in Cornwall and has been since the 1990s. He enjoys the friendships.

“I always enjoy the game, but probably with the group out in Cornwall, you enjoy primarily the people, and the game secondary, and you can get good exercise out of it as well.”

He said it keeps people active and involved.

“It’s just a wonderful, social activity. People are here to enjoy themselves and even though we’re older, we still have that little bit of competitive spirit too.”

Over 500 Islanders age 55+ are taking part in the Games in a variety of sports and activities.

Cornwall/Ch’town Bill Hope rink still in contention at PEI Senior Men’s, Shirley Berry rink wins women’s by default

Rod MacDonald rink wins both A and B qualifiers at the PEI Seniors

The Rod MacDonald rink from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club and the Charlottetown Curling Complex have now captured both the A and the B section finals of the modified triple knockout PEI Credit Unions Provincial Senior Men’s championships in Montague, winning both games against the same team, Peter Gallant of Charlottetown, and by the same score — 6-5. This will give the MacDonald rink, who were runners-up in the event, for curlers age 50 and over, last year, a “double life” in the two game championship round on Wednesday, as they will play in both championship games, taking the title if they win either game, while their opponent would have to win both games. If the MacDonald rink also wins the “C” final on Tuesday at 2 pm, they will become the Senior Men’s champs, and the championship round will not be played.

File photo: Rod MacDonald directs a rock into the house at the 2014 Seniors

Gallant took points in the first two ends in today’s game, but MacDonald tied it up with a deuce in four. Gallant took a single in five to lead 3-2, but MacDonald scored a triple in six for the lead. Gallant came up with a tying deuce in seven, but MacDonald took the win with a single in eight. Gallant advanced to the B final with a 5-3 win this morning over the Mel Bernard rink from Summerside, which includes three members of last year’s winning team.

Blair Jay and his Summerside rink were eliminated this morning, thanks to a 9-2 win by Bill Hope of Charlottetown in just four ends, with Hope breaking a 2-2 tie with five points in the third end, and then stealing a deuce in the next end to bring the game to a quick close. Hope then knocked out the other Summerside rink in the six-team field, Bernard, with a 7-2 win in six ends in the afternoon draw, following a fourth end triple with single steals in ends five and six.

This leaves only MacDonald, Gallant and Hope in the competition going into Tuesday’s final two knockout round games, with Hope taking on Gallant at 10 am, and the winner facing MacDonald in the C final at 2 pm. The championship round, if required, goes Wednesday at 10 am and, if needed, 2 pm. The Senior men’s champions, along with the women’s winner, the Shirley Berry team from Cornwall and Charlottetown, who won by default as they were the only entry, will advance to the 2015 Canadian Senior Curling Championships, March 21-28, 2015, in Edmonton, AB.

Cornwall area projects receive funding (PEI Gov’t)

Cornwall area residents will benefit from new investments made by the provincial government in cooperation with local groups, says Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development Minister Ron MacKinley.

“Government is pleased to partner with local community organizations to carry out projects that will benefit rural residents,” said Mr. MacKinley. “The projects improve economic and social opportunities, while contributing to making our communities more safe and secure.”

The Island Community Fund will contribute $11,522 towards a $28,806 project to re-surface the gym floor at the APM Centre in Cornwall. The floor at the multi-use recreational complex is 14 years old.

cornwallmackinley(Left to right) Jeff Taylor, Facility Chair at the Cornwall Curling Club; Carol Sweetapple, club member; Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development Minister Ron MacKinley; and Alan MacCormac, assistant ice technician at the Club, check out the curling stones following the announcement.

Mr. MacKinley said the department is also providing support to three other projects in the Cornwall area. The Cornwall Curling Club is reconditioning 64 curling stones at a cost of $13,760 with support from the department of $6,880. The North River Rural Community Fire Department will receive $7,777 towards a $14,554 expenditure to purchase new equipment. The Cornwall Lions Club is receiving $8,800 towards a $11,730 project to purchase and outfit a mobile unit to sell lobsters.

“Projects such as these have far-reaching benefits for residents of rural communities,” said Mr. MacKinley. “I commend the many volunteers who spend countless hours in community organizations that make rural areas stronger and better places in which to live and work.”

Since 2009, the Island Community Fund has invested nearly $20 million to support more than 400 projects across the province, with a total project value of more than $67 million.

Veronica Smith raising money for Schmirler Foundation by selling tickets on Storm game this Sunday

PEI Skip Veronica Smith throws during the first game at Juniors

My name is Veronica Smith I am a third year business student at UPEI. I have been a part of the UPEI Women’s curling team the past three seasons, and been successful in earning the right to representing UPEI at three CIS events. I have also represented PEI at the past three Canadian Junior Nationals.

I was very fortunate last May to be selected as (one of the six in Canada) a Sandra Schmirler Scholar. A Schmirler Scholar is a university student who is very competitive in the junior curling circuit. A requirement of this scholarship is to hold a fundraising event in our home province where we can raise funds and awareness about the Foundation.

The Sandra Schmirler Foundation is a foundation that helps babies who are born prematurely with giving funds to neonatal intensive care units across the country. The motto is “Champions start small”.  The link below will take you to their website where you can see what they have accomplished and some more information about the Foundation.

http://www.sandraschmirler.org/english/

For my fundraiser I am selling tickets for an Island Storm basketball game on Sunday Feb 22. The Island Storm will be playing St. John Millrats at 2pm. The tickets are $10 with 100% of the proceeds from these ticket sales will go to the Sandra Schmirler Foundation.

I would love to have the support of the curling community in my fundraising efforts, as I believe this is a worthy cause and a great opportunity. If you are not able to attend the game, but would still like to support me through raising funds for the foundation you can make a donation to foundation by clicking on this link.

Provincial Senior Men’s Curling Ch’ship starts Friday. Cornwall’s Shirley Berry rink wins women’s title by default

seniors

The PEI Credit Unions Provincial Senior Men’s Curling Championship, for curlers age 50 and over, will be held at the Montague Curling Club February 20-24, 2015. Six men’s teams are entered, and will play a modified triple knockout format with a two game championship round, unless a team wins all three knockout sections, in which case they would be awarded the title without the final games being played. The  Ted MacFadyen team from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside won the event last year. MacFadyen is not back, but the other three members of his team – Lou Nowlan, Earle Proude, and Pat Aylward, are, with Mel Bernard stepping in as skip. Bernard, Nowlan, and Proude won the Provincial Masters title, for curlers age 60 and over this year, with Alan Montgomery as lead stone.

Other teams in the experienced field are the Rod MacDonald team from the Silver Fox and Charlottetown curling facilities, the Peter Gallant and Bill Hope rinks from Charlottetown, the Blair Jay foursome from the Silver Fox, and the Donald Clarey squad from the host club. MacDonald is 2013 champ and last year’s runner-up. Hope is 2011 champ. Gallant and MacDonald played together on the 20 10 winning team. Bernard skipped with Jay at third  on the 2007 and 2009 winning teams, and won at third in 2006. Bernard skip Lou Nowlan won the event back in 1997 at third, and 1999 at skip. Clarey has national experience at The Dominion Curling Club Championship in 2010 and 2011.

End by end Curlcast results from the Senior Men’s will be available at CurlAtlantic.com/scoreboard

Championship round (Games Ch1, Ch2) scenarios:

(1) If  a team wins all three knockout sections, they will be the winners, without the championship round.

(2) If a team wins any two knockout sections, they will play in both championship round games Ch1 and Ch2 and win the title if they take either game, while their opponent, the winner of the other section, would have to win both.

(3) If there are three separate section winners, the one that played in the most section qualifier games (5, 12, 15) gets the bye to Ch2, while the other two would square off in Ch1, with the winner advancing to Ch2. If there is a tie in number of qualifier games played, the team who qualifies earliest gets the bye to Ch2.

Cornwall’s Stick curling provincial champs pleased with opportunity to play (Journal)

(by Eric McCarthy)

O’LEARY — Cornwall curlers Gloria Clarke and Ruth Stavert had no more than won their fifth P.E.I. Women’s Stick Curling Championship in six years Thursday when they both acknowledged last year’s provincial, the one they didn’t win, was their most memorable.

Gloria Clarke from left, and Ruth Stavert accept the Ladies Stick Curling P.E.I. Provincial Championship trophy from Clair Sweet, president of the host Maple Leaf Curling Club. The Cornwall duo beat out another Cornwall team to win their fifth provincial title in six years.

Clarke had just completed cancer treatment and Stavert was still recovering from hip replacement. Stavert relied on a specially made crutch just to support herself out on the ice. They finished third. Because one of the teams that finished ahead of them couldn’t go to the Maritime championship, they got to go and ended up winning the whole thing. The extra month of recovery time had helped, they agreed. They remained on a roll at this year’s provincial championship at Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary, scoring a deuce in the final end of their championship game against another Cornwall team Myrna Craswell and Etta Reid, for a 5-4 win and the title. But Clarke said the title is secondary. “I do this because I enjoy it,” she said.

The veteran stick curlers feel they complement each other. “When I have a bad end, she pulls me through; when she has a bad end, I pull her through,” Clarke commented. “We like to win, but we do it for fun,” she stressed.

Ferguson-Logan Funeral Home and Bob’s Stick sponsored the provincial women’s and open championships.

A Cornwall team also claimed Stick Curling Provincial’s Open Division. Sterling Stratton and Barry Craswell, needed an extra end to get by the Montague team of Gordon MacDonald and Floyd Stewart in the final. They scored a point with hammer after MacDonald and Stewart tied the game 4-4 with a deuce in six.

Provincial Open stick curling champions, Barry Craswell, from left, and Sterling Stratton from the Cornwall Curling Club, are congratulated by Clair Sweet, president of the host Maple Leaf Curling Club and Bob Leard of Bob’s Stick, one of the sponsors of the championship event. They defeated the Montague team of Floyd Stewart and Gordon MacDonald 5-4 in an extra-end championship final.

Cornwall teams sweep PEI Stick Championship divisions

Stick Curling PEI Logo

The 2015 PEI Stick Championship, sponsored by the Ferguson-Logan Funeral home in Montague, wrapped up this afternoon at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary, with teams from the Cornwall Curling Club winning both the Open (any combination of male/female) and Women’s divisions.

Ferguson FH

The Sterling Stratton/Barry Craswell duo edged Floyd Stewart and Gordon MacDonald from the Montague Curling Club 5-4 in the Open final. The two teams topped their respective round robin pools with 4-1 records, giving them byes into the semi-finals. Stewart/MacDonald edged their clubmates Bob Leard and Larry Dewar 5-4 in an extra end in the semis, while Stratton/Craswell stole a single in the fourth end, and deuces in five and six to beat the Blair Bernard/Dale Dennis team from the host club 7-2 to advance to the final. 12 Open Division teams were entered.

In the six team women’s division, the Gloria Clarke/Ruth Stavert rink edged their Cornwall clubmates Myrna Craswell and Etta Reid 5-4, stealing a point in the fourth end to give them the edge in the game. Reid was on last year’s winning team, while Stavert/Clarke won the previous four years. Craswell/Reid had a 4-1 round robin record, while Clarke/Stavert went 3-2. Clarke/Stavert beat the Audrey Thomson/Ann Barwise twosome 7-4 in the semi-final to advance to the final. Thomson/Barwise had a 4-1 round robin record.

The four open division teams in the semis (Laird/Dewar, Bernard/Dennis and the final (Stratton/Craswell, Stewart/MacDonald), along with the top two women’s rinks from this year’s event (Clarke/Stavert and Craswell/Reid) earn the right to compete in the Maritime Stick Curling Championships, March 11-13 in Amherst, NS.

The top two Open and Women’s division teams (the Women’s division, introduced when PEI hosted the event, is back this year) also earn the right to compete in the 2015 Canadian Open Stick Curling Championship, April 2-5 at the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club in Winnipeg, Manitoba. This is an “open” event, but reserves entries for the top two teams from each of BC, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and PEI.

In stick curling there are two curlers per team, who deliver their rocks with delivery sticks, with each team member delivering from opposite ends. Sweeping is allowed only from the hog line to the back of the house at the playing end. Two curlers, one from each team, alternately deliver 6 stones each per end, while their teammate skips that end. The roles are then reversed, and the partners deliver the stones back. No stone may be removed from play until the fourth stone of each end. Games are six ends and take about an hour to play. For more information on stick curling, including complete rules of play, visit www.stickcurling.ca.

Ladder League round 2 winners and round 3 pools set

Round two, sponsored by Murphy’s Cornwall Pharmacy, is over at the Wednesday evening ladder league, leaving only one (abbreviated) round (six weeks) to go. We’ve been lucky to bypass all the storms so far. Here’s the results from round two:

In the A pool, the Robert Thibodeau rink and the Paul Durant foursome both finished play with only one loss. The two teams met on January 21, with Durant coming out the winner, so he, and his team of  Danny Kneabone, Alan Acorn, Aaron Campbell, will win the sponsor prizes for the A pool this round. Durant came very close to a second place finish, as his last game came down to a draw to the button to break a tie, and his rock went about an inch further than the one thrown by Donald DeWolfe.

As for those descending the ladder to the B pool, the Paul Neima team with one win, and the Greg Groves rink with two will be making the trip. There were three teams with three wins – DeWolfe, round one B pool winner Bob Fowler, and Mark MacDonald.

Looking at head to head records, Fowler beat DeWolfe on Jan. 21, DeWolfe beat MacDonald on the 4th, Fowler beat MacDonald on the 28th. Since Fowler beat both of the other teams, he’s safe in the A pool, leaving DeWolfe and MacDonald. Since DeWolfe also beat MacDonald, he stays in the A pool and MacDonald takes the 3rd spot down the ladder to B.

Looking at the B pool, there are three teams at the top with five wins – Gord Peters, Kim Glydon, and Karen Currie. All of them will move up the ladder to the A pool. Finding a pool winner isn’t quite as easy though.

Glydon and Peters played on Jan. 7th, with Glydon winning 9-7. Peters and Currie met on Jan. 14th, with Peters winning 8-7. Glydon and Currie played on January 28, with Currie winning 6-4 So, nobody beat the other two teams. The rules state that we have to look at “the score differentials of the teams who are tied.” Peters got a total of  15 pts in the games between the three teams, while Glydon got 13, and Currie also earned a total of 13 points, so Peters, and his team of Hank Kamphuis, Gerald Dykerman, and Pat MacInnis wins the prizes for the B pool this round by a two point margin.

Here are the pools for Round 3:

Pool A

A1-Paul Durant, Danny Kneabone, Alan Acorn, Aaron Campbell
A2-Robert Thibodeau, Angus Kennedy, Joe MacKinnon, Ken Monaghan
A3-Devin Schut, Tyson Smith, Logan Maker, Mitchell Schut/Colin MacKenzie
A4-Bob Fowler, Carl Currie, Thane Thompson, Danny Young
A5-Donald DeWolfe, Avery Wells, Cameron Jenkins, Nick Johnston
A6-Gord Peters, Hank Kamphuis, Gerald Dykerman, Pat MacInnis
A7-Karen Currie, Valerie Acorn, Mark Perry, Leonard Gotell
A8-Kim Glydon, Morgan Kirkham, Tracy MacDonald, Krista Affleck

Pool B
B1-Mark MacDonald, Brad Gardiner, Wayne Dalziel, Wayne Goodwin
B2-Greg Groves, Winston Taylor, Donald Weeks, Marjorie Matthews|
B3-Paul Neima, Joe Callaghan, Ankur Deshpande, Alan Mason
B4-Kelly Watts, Cathy Handren, Paula Ling, Theresa Andrews
B5-Kristie Rogers, Elly Whitney-Coulter, Olivia MacPhail, Rachel MacLean
B6-David Younker, Kelli-Lynn Younker, Breanna Huntley, Ann Younker
B7-Ray Biagé, Derek Gallant, Rebecca Rolfe, Derek MacEwen
B8-Lew Black, Hans Wicki, Colleen Neily, Hans Anderegg

Now that we have the winners and the pools, we’ll get the draw ready as soon as possible!

The four open division teams in the semis and the final, along with the top two women’s rinks from this year’s event earn the right to compete in the Maritime Stick Curling Championships, March 11-13 in Amherst, NS.

Ron MacKinley leaving politics, proud of investment in local facilities such as our Club

Ron MacKinley announced today that he will not be reoffering in the next election, after 29 years as the MLA for Cornwall-Meadowbank. Mr. MacKinley has been a great supporter of our Club, both in the reconstruction project and in keeping us apprised of any grants and funding opportunities which become available. In his news release today, he said that he is “most proud” of “the new and expanded infrastructure for Westwood Primary School, Eliot River Elementary School and East Wiltshire Intermediate School;  as well as investments in our community facilities, namely the APM Centre, Cornwall Curling Club, Terry Fox Sports Complex and the North River Fire Department.”

Mr. MacKinley visited our Club many times to speak at banquets and opening ceremonies, and always had great things to say about our Club and its role in the community.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish him all the best in his future endeavors.

Stick Curling PEI Logo

The Provincial Stick Curling Championship, sponsored by the Ferguson-Logan Funeral Home, with Open and Women’s divisions, got underway today at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary, with twelve Open division (and combination of male or female) teams, divided into two pools, and six Women’s division two-person teams taking part in the round robin competition. After opening day, two Women’s division teams and one Open division team are still undefeated.

In the Women’s Division, the Gloria Thomson/Ann Barwise pair are 3-0, while the Gloria Clarke/Ruth Stavert twosome from Cornwall are 2-0. Only one Open team is still unbeaten – the Cornwall duo  of Sterling Stratton and Barry Craswell.

Play continues with six draws on Wednesday. Two person stick curling games are six ends, and take about an hour to play. The championship round goes Thursday, with the finals at 2:30 pm.

The four open division teams in the semis and the final, along with the top two women’s rinks from this year’s event earn the right to compete in the Maritime Stick Curling Championships, March 11-13 in Amherst, NS.

Team Schut GoPro curling video a hit in The O.C. (Orange Co. CA)!

We are delighted to have received this website comment from Sue Robinson-Cassidy from Orange County California regarding the video shot by Team Mitchell Schut (ages 11-13) using a GoPro camera, with many shots taken with the camera on the rock.

I showed this to our curlers here in Orange County California (we curl year round here, surf in the morning, curl in the afternoon!) and they loved it. You guys ROCK! I grew up in Borden, PEI, but didn’t curl ’til moving to Southern California. Wish I had known back then what I was missing. Great video guys.

Check out the O.C. Curling Club here: http://www.occurling.com/

In case you missed it the first time around, here it is again:

Thanks to our volunteers for introducing PEI newcomers to our favourite sport!

Curling, since its early days, has been mostly a sport for those of northern European origin, due to its Scottish origin and the need for a sheet of ice. The Cornwall Curling Club is pleased to have partnered with the PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada to introduce the sport, which now has more participants in Canada than everywhere else in the world combined, to a whole new audience — newcomers to our country from places like China and South America. With the help of our great volunteers, we taught the basics of the sport to dozens of Newcomers, over three weeks in January, and an extra night in February, and all indications are that they really enjoyed it. Who knows – maybe next season we’ll see some of them back here as members!

We also received some ice rental income for the Club on our mostly unused Sunday evening timeslot. Thanks to the Newcomers association, and also to the funding assistance we received from the Sport Partnership and Engagement Program, a project of the Sport Participation Bilateral which is jointly funded by the Province of PEI (Department of Health and Wellness) and the Federal Government (Canadian Heritage – Sport Canada).

Of course, the biggest thanks must go to our many volunteer instructors, including Vernon Chowan, Paula Ling, Paul Arsenault, Paul Durant, Donald Weeks, Myron and Diane MacKay (who didn’t get to go on because we had more instructors than we needed that night, but we thank them anyway!), Frank Martin, Brent Irving, Angela Sanderson, Frank Weiler, Bryan Sutherland, Krista Affleck, Ankur Deshpande, Carlene Peters, Edgar Coffin, Paul Neima, Joe MacKinnon, and anyone I forgot, too!

Cornwall’s Schut rink wraps up play at the Future Tankard

Cornwall didn’t field a team  in this year’s Curl PEI Tankard Provincial Men’s Curling Championship in Alberton, but the Devin Schut team took part in the Future Tankard, a new developmental event for male junior curlers who may one day go on to compete in the Tankard. They got to partner with a Tankard team during the event, play their games at the same venue at the same time, and join their older counterparts at the meal and the on-ice opening ceremonies.

This great photo in today’s Journal Pioneer includes Logan Maker, second on the Schut team at the back right, and lead Colin MacKenzie (back centre) on the next sheet to the Tankard B finalists – the Adam Casey and Jamie Newson teams.

Anson Carmody, left and Robbie Doherty, front end on the Adam Casey rink, get in line to watch as opposing skip, Jamie Newson calls for his sweepers during the teams’ B event final match-up at the Men’s Tankard curling championship in Alberton. Casey won the game. Both teams are still alive in the triple knock-out championship which will be decided Tuesday.
Eric McCarthy/Journal Pioneer

The Schut team, which also includes Tyson Smith at third, were playing their final game in the three team round robin, against the Leslie Noye rink from the host club. Noye picked up four points in the sixth end to win the game 8-4, putting the Western rink at the top of the standings, with a 2-0 record with Schut finishing second at 1-1, and Alex Gallant from Summerside going 0-2.

There were some close finishes at the first annual Glen Afton Golf Club Under 13 Funspiel, and added U14 division, on Saturday, here at the Cornwall Curling Club.  The event attracted 10 U13 teams and 4 U14.
