Top administrators to be recognized at awards banquet (Sport PEI)

Sport administrators in contention for annual award

Three leaders of sport will be in the spotlight April 11 when Sport PEI announces the winner of the prestigious ADL Volunteer Administrator of the Year award at its annual banquet in Charlottetown.
Derek MacEwen (curling), Stephen Murray (rowing), and Gordon Rogers (speed skating) have been named as finalists for this award, which recognizes the dedication and organizing abilities of individuals in sport.
Tickets for the awards banquet are available by contacting Nick Murray at Sport PEI, at 368-4547.
Derek MacEwen (Curling)
adminmacewen
Stratford’s Derek MacEwen is a long-time curling volunteer, most notably with the Cornwall club, and through his work on the Curl PEI website.
MacEwen’s work on the site has made it one of the very best sites for curling information in the country, serving the Island community with not just the latest home news but from around the country, and internationally. As soon as a championship is over, results and photos are on-line and social media is updated with the latest happenings. In addition to the main site, Derek also produces individual sites for the individual Curl PEI championships, as well as the Cornwall Curling Club.
A past-president at Cornwall, Derek is a dedicated volunteer in numerous capacities, whether it is drawmaster for the Wednesday Ladder league, running bonspiels, or serving on the board. He is a great asset to the sport in the province, and last summer was recognized with a Canadian Curling Association Volunteer of the Week award.
Stephen Murray (Rowing)
Prior to 2009 it would have been impossible to find any rowing in the province, but thanks to the efforts of Charlottetown’s Stephen Murray, the sport is thriving.
Networking with key Rowing Canada officials to obtain starter kits following the 2009 Canada Games, Murray and a few key volunteers set up home at the Charlottetown Yacht Club, offering Learn to Row programs that saw membership began to grow.
As well as spending hours in the water teaching and coaching, Stephen maintained the boats, arranged storage, and wore numerous hats both in the boats and in the boardroom as association president, where his efforts saw a steady increase in participants.
In 2013 rowing sent a team of 10 to the Sherbrooke Canada Games, the association has grown its number of boats, and the sport is proving to be extremely popular with participants of all ages and abilities.
Gordon Rogers (Speed Skating)
adminrogers
Speed skating in the province has been blessed with many fine administrators, and Charlottetown’s Gordon Rogers has done an outstanding job in his seven-year tenure as treasurer.
In addition to all the financials, Gordon takes on numerous other administrative roles including registrar, ice scheduler and overseeing internal communications for members.
He coordinates the annual awards banquet, provides assistance to the Canada Games program, and also takes on duties as a meet recorder or coordinator for the major events, as well as liaising with Speed Skate New Brunswick regarding competition schedules.
Gordon also helps out on the ice as a coach at all levels from Learn to Skate to competitive, and is a key individual in a sport which is doing very well on PEI.

For more on Saturday’s draws, here’s the CCA’s round robin wrapup story
(by Jean Mills)

The fourth day of round robin play for the 2014 CIS/CCA Curling Championships continued Saturday morning at 9 a.m. CST in Regina, Sask., at the Callie Curling Club.

Memorial University of Newfoundland Sea Hawks battled against the University of Alberta Golden Bears. Both teams were tied at a 3-3 record going into the game, and with a win by the Golden Bears, the Sea Hawks dropped down to fourth place sending Alberta onto the semi-final game against Wilfrid Laurier (6-1). Alberta took an early 4-1 lead after the fourth end. Memorial fought back and with a stolen point in the eighth end they were trailing Alberta 5-4. The Golden Bears secured a 7-4 lead after the ninth, leaving the Sea Hawks in a tough three point deficit going into the 10th end. At Memorial skip Colin Thomas’ rocks the Sea Hawks were sitting two. But with a freeze by Alberta’s Brendan Bottcher (skip), Thomas was left with no options and gave Alberta the win.

University of Manitoba Bisons (5-1) took on the host team University of Regina Cougars (2-4) in their final draw of the round robin. Manitoba was sitting in first placed tied with Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks. After four ends, Regina led 4-1, while Manitoba struggled to get points with hammer and trailed 6-3 after the seventh end. With a short draw attempt by Regina on their last rock in the eighth, Manitoba stole three to tie up the game 6-6. In the ninth end, Regina was able to take a one-point lead. In the 10th end with hammer, Manitoba skip Matt Dunstone decided on a double after Regina’s Catlin Schneider (skip) made a tough draw to the four foot to sit one. Dunstone’s hit was good, giving the Bisons three points and the win with a 9-7 final score. The loss for Regina gives them an eighth place finish in the 2014 championship. The win gives Manitoba a first place standing and a berth to the 2014 CIS/CCA Curling Championship men’s final Sunday at 5 p.m. CST.

In their last games of the championship, the Saint Mary’s University Huskies (2-4) were successful over the University of Toronto Varsity Blues (2-4). At the fifth end break, Saint Mary’s had an 8-1 lead after stealing three points in both the fourth and fifth ends. Toronto pushed back, stealing three points in the eighth and one in the ninth to trail 9-7. In the 10th end, SMU was able to take one point for the win. With a 10-7 final score, the Huskies finished the championship in fourth place with a 3-4 record, and the Blues in sixth place with a 2-5 record.

Brock University Badgers (2-4) went up against Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks (5-1) in their final draw of the round robin. Going into the game, Laurier was tied with the Manitoba Bisons for first place. The Golden Hawks had a 9-1 lead going into the fifth end break, and continued to dominate over the Badgers who shook hands after eight ends, trailing 11-3. With the loss, Brock finished the championship in seventh place with a 2-5 record. The win sends Laurier to the semifinal match Saturday night at 7 p.m. CST.

On the women’s side, the University of Alberta Pandas (5-1) took on host team University of Regina Cougars (2-4). Going into the game, the Pandas were tied for first place with the Carleton University Ravens and Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks. Tied 2-2 after the third end, Alberta took a 5-2 lead going into the fifth end break. Regina was never able to come ahead as the Pandas were sitting at an 8-4 lead after the ninth and ran the Cougars out of rocks in the 10th. With the 8-4 win, Alberta sits in first place with a 6-1 record and move onto the 2014 CIS/CCA Curling Championships women’s final on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. CST. The loss for the Cougars gives them a 2-5 record. Regina finished the championship in sixth place.

Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks (5-1) went up against the University of PEI Panthers (1-5). In a surprising upset, the Panthers defeated the Golden Hawks 7-4 in nine ends. Going into the game, Laurier was tied with Alberta and Carleton for first place. PEI led 3-1 going into the fifth end break, but held Laurier to only three points in the back half. The Panthers took two in the seventh and ninth ends to secure the win. The loss for Laurier means a spot in the semifinal match Saturday night at 7 p.m. CST. PEI finishes their 2014 championship run in seventh place with a 2-5 record.

Carleton pulled ahead early with a 4-0 lead after the third. Toronto rebounded with three points in the third end. The two teams traded ends and were tied 5-5 after the eighth. Carleton blanked the ninth, and with a two-point steal in the 10th, the Varsity Blues took a 7-6 win. The upset sends Carleton to the semifinal match against Wilfrid Laurier Saturday night at 7 p.m. CST. The win for Toronto gave them fifth place in the 2014 CIS/CCA Curling Championships.

Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack (3-3) dominated over University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds (1-5) in both teams’ final game of the 2014 CIS/CCA Curling Championship. After stealing in three ends, Thompson had a strong 6-0 lead after the fourth. New Brunswick was only able to come back with one point in the fifth and one in the seventh. With a five-point gain in the eighth end by the Wolfpack, the Varsity Reds shook hands and gave Thompson Rivers a 12-2 victory. The win gave TRU a 4-3 record and fourth place in the championship, and UNB finished in eighth place with a 1-6 record.

The semifinal games will see the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (6-1) take on the Alberta Golden Bears (4-3) on the men’s side and Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (5-2) against the Carleton Ravens (5-2) on the women’s side. PEI’s MacFadyen and Berry rinks win Maritime Masters

PEI’s two reigning Masters champs came out the winners at the Maritime Masters Curling Championships, which wrapped up on Sunday at the Cornwall Curling Club, and featured the provincial masters (age 60 and over) winners and runners up from around the Maritimes. The Ted MacFadyen rink from the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club in Summerside went undefeated with a 5-0 round robin record to win the men’s side. Bill Hope substituted for MacFadyen after the first two draws. Other members of the rink, who won the PEI Masters this year are Lou Nowlan, David Murphy and Alan Montgomery. Murphy was substituting for PEI Masters second Earle Proude in this event. MacFadyen also skipped the PEI Seniors championship team. Men’s runners-up were the Milt Larsen foursome from the Mayflower Curling Club in Halifax, who lost only to MacFadyen in the event, by an 8-6 score. Playing with Larsen were Jim Russell, Fred Lutes, and Ross Woodward.

New Brunswick was only to send one team in both the men’s and women’s divisions this year, as curlers were volunteering at the World Women’s in Saint John, so a third PEI team was added in each division.

The host committee of the Maritime Masters wants to extend a huge thank you  to the many volunteers who helped to make this bonspiel a success. Also, a special thank you goes to Bev McCormick and all the staff of the Cornwall Curling Club. The committee received many positive comments from participants in this Championship.

MacLean and Field defeated the Higginbothams in an all-PEI final to win the Open Championship. This is the first time in the 6 years of the event that it was not won by a Nova Scotia team. The Callaghan – Gavin duo finished their division play with a 5-0 record but were eliminated by the MacLean- Field team in the quarter-final.

The women’s division was won by Clarke –Stavert when they defeated a team from Yarmouth by stealing a point in the final end of the game. This marks the 4th win by Clarke- Stavert team in the 5 year history of the women’s division. PEI women remain undefeated in the championship games as the remaining year was won by the Shirley Lank and Audrey Callaghan duo. As a rookie team in the event, Hughes –Reid  finished with a respectable 2-3 record missing the playoffs when they lost a tie-breaker.

Maritime Masters starts this morning, here at the Cornwall Curling Club

Play gets underway this morning at 8:30 at the Maritime Masters Curling Championships, here at the  Cornwall Curling Club, who last hosted this event in 2005. The top age 60 and over winner and runner-up teams from the provincial Masters championships of the three Maritime Provinces are invited to compete in this annual championship, which rotates between the three provinces. All games are eight ends. New Brunswick, where many Masters curlers are volunteering at the World Women’s in Saint John, is only sending one team in both the men’s and the women’s events, so there is an additional host province team competing in each.

The men’s winner last year was the New Brunswick runner-up rink, also from the host Capital Winter Club, skipped by Dave Sullivan, who is not back this year. Cornwall Stick Curler Ruth Stavert finalist for Masters Award (Sport PEI)

Recognizing that sport can be a life-long endeavor, Sport PEI is pleased to announce the finalists for the Masters award, celebrating the achievements of those aged 35 and over who are still competing at the highest levels.

Finalists for this prestigious award, which will be presented at the annual awards banquet on April 11 in Charlottetown, are Michael Gaudet (distance running), Ruth Stavert (stick curling), and Paul Wright (cross country skiing).

Tickets for the annual banquet will be available from this Friday by contacting Nick Murray at 368-4547.

Michael Gaudet (Distance Running)

PEI has a tradition of producing outstanding endurance athletes, and one of the toughest is Charlottetown’s Michael Gaudet.

Formerly a marathon swimmer who can boast swimming around Manhattan Island, Gaudet concentrates now on distance running, and in 2013 he showed that he is one of the best in Canada for his age group.

At the BMO PEI Marathon Michael ran a personal best of 3:14:30, not just winning the 60-69 age division but finishing 15th overall. His time was 9th fastest in the country for his age group, and the fastest by a runner in Atlantic Canada.

Gaudet – who in 2012 ran 275km, tip-to-tip from Tignish to Elmira in 42 hours and 18 minutes – also had fine results at the Wascally Wabbit 80km Trail Run (completed in 9:47:21), the Age of Sail Marathon in Port Greville, Nova Scotia (1st overall in 3:32:54) and the Maritime Race Week-end at Fisherman’s Cove, NS (10th overall, in 3:32:17).

In 2012 Gaudet received the Ewen Stewart Inspirational Runner Award from the Roadrunners PEI.

Ruth Stavert  (Stick Curling)

Cornwall’s Ruth Stavert is the Jennifer Jones of the stick curling community, and in 2013 she won an unprecedented four titles, from provincial right the way through to a national championship.

A great advocate of this modified form of the game, Ruth has been stick curling since 2007 and has become its most skilled competitor.

Last year, with regular partner Gloria Clarke, Ruth won both the provincial title for a fourth time, and the Maritime championship in Montague, before Gloria had to take time away through ill health.

With new partner Eileen Blanchard, Ruth showed the country that she was one of the best, winning the 10-team women’s division on home ice at the Cornwall Curling Club. To round off the sweep, Ruth and Eileen also claimed the 55-plus Provincial Games title.

For her efforts, Ruth was recognized by Curl PEI by winning the Senior Female Athlete of the Year award.

Paul Wright (Cross Country Skiing)

Bedeque’s Paul Wright just keeps rolling along, and this inspirational athlete for whom age is just a number enjoyed another great season on the trails.

Highlight of Wright’s year was another double gold medal winning performance at the Canadian Championships in Huntsville, Ontario, where he won both the 10km and 20km classic events in the 55-59 age division. It was Paul’s second straight year for double gold, and his third in the last four years, and brought his total medal count as a masters athlete at the nationals  to 20.

In addition, Wright  was first overall at the Wostawea Loppet 20km in Fredericton, while in Gatineau, considered a world loppet event, he was 3rd in his age division in the 55km classic, behind competitors from Finland and Russia.

Cornwall hosting Maritime Masters, starting Friday morning

Practice goes Thursday from 2:30-4 pm, and play gets underway Friday morning at 8:30 at the Maritime Masters Curling Championships, hosted this year here at the  Cornwall Curling Club, who last hosted this event in 2005.

The 2013 event was held at the Capital Winter Club.in Fredericton, NB. The Women’s  winner was the New Brunswick runner-up team from the host club, Isabel Yeamans, third Helen MacDonald, second Joan Whitehead and lead Toni O’Brien, who are back this year with their team intact.

The runner-up women’s team last year was from this year’s host club, and was skipped by Carol Sweetapple, with Danielle Girard at 3rd, second Carlene Peters and lead Bernie Field.  Girard and Field are curling on PEI’s third women’s team at this year’s event, skipped by Myrna Sanderson. The PEI women’s contingent is led this year by current Masters champs, the Shirley Berry rink from the host club, and is rounded out by the Diane MacKay rink from Cornwall and the Charlottetown Curling Complex. Judy Burgess from Truro, and Louanne Labelle from the Dartmouth Curling Club are the Nova Scotia women’s entries.

The men’s winner last year was the New Brunswick runner-up rink, also from the host Capital Winter Club, skipped by Dave Sullivan, who is not back this year. Rod Aubé is skipping this year’s entry, also from the CWC. The 2013 PEI Masters champions, the Mel Bernard rink from the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club in Summerside were last year’s men’s runners-up. Other members of the team were third Ted MacFadyen (substituting for Blair Jay), second Lou Nowlan, and lead Earle Proude. MacFadyen, this year’s PEI champ, is back with Nowlan and Proude, along with Alan Montgomery. MacFadyen also skipped this year’s PEI Senior Men’s championship team, backed up by Nowlan. PEI’s second team is also from the Silver Fox, and is skipped by John Holmes, while the Brian Ellis foursome from the Crapaud Community Curling Club are PEI’s third team. Nova Scotia is sending the Milt Larsen foursome from the Mayflower Curling Club in Halifax, and the Haylett Clarke team from the Bluenose Curling Club in New Glasgow.

The teams in the men’s and women’s Maritime Masters play a round robin draw, with draws to the button used to determine the winners in the event of ties.

Men’s draws go Friday at 8:30 am and 2 pm, Saturday at 11 am and 4:30 pm, and Sunday at 8:30 am. The draw to the button, if necessary, and the men’s closing ceremonies are scheduled for 10:30 am, following the final men’s draw. The women’s event kicks off Friday at 11 am and 4:30 pm, continues Saturday at 8:30 am and 2 pm, and wraps up Sunday at 11, with the draw to the button, if needed, and closing ceremonies following the final draw, at 1 pm.

Cornwall’s DeWolfe, Lenentine, Rogers rinks advance to today’s ch’ship round play at O’Connor Glass U16

The boy’s and girl’s championship rounds are set for the O’Connor Glass Provincial Under 16 curling championships, which wrap up with the finals this evening at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton.Three Cornwall teams, skipped by Donald DeWolfe, Lauren Lenentine, and Kristie Rogers, have advanced to today’s championship round action.

IMG_8513The defending champion Alex MacFadyen rink from the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club in Summerside completed round robin play with a perfect 4-0 record, earning a bye to the boy’s final, at 6 this evening. Cornwall’s Donald DeWolfe rink, who are in second place, losing only to MacFadyen (12-5 Saturday morning), and the Alex Gallant rink from the Fox, who finished third, with a 2-2 win-loss record, will play in the 2 pm semi-final, with the winner facing MacFadyen in the championship game. Devin Schut of Cornwall ended play at 1-3, with Owen Collier of Montague going 0-4.

On the girl’s side, the Kaleigh MacKay rink from Crapaud and Montague had three straight wins in triple knockout play to qualify first for the Page round, at 10 this morning. Cornwall’s Lauren Lenentine team, the defending champions, lost the “A” qualifier, 8-5 to MacKay, but won the “B”, stealing ends 5 through 7 against Lauren Moerike of Charlottetown. MacKay and Lenentine now square off in the 10 am Page A vs B game, with the winner going directly to the 6 pm final, and the loser taking on the winner of the Page C vs D game in the 2 pm semi-final. The winner of the semi then advances to the final.

The Page C vs D game at 10 sees Kristie Rogers of Cornwall, who won the “C” qualifier with a come-from-behind win over clubmate Katie Worth, taking on Moerike, who also came from behind to capture  the final qualifying spot, with a 12-5 win over Karlie Lewis of the host Western Community club. Rogers was trailing 2-1 after 2, and took a single in three, stole a triple in end four, and then stole the next four ends for the win. Moerike was down 6-0 after the second end, but took four points in the third, and stole a triple in the 4th to lead 7-6 at the half. Lewis tied it with a single in five, but a four point sixth end, and a steal of one in the seventh gave Moerike the win. The winner of the 10 am Page C vs D game advances to the 2 pm semi-final.

Eight girls and five boys teams took part in the event.

Wed. Ladder League – A-Pool Draw revised

Hopefully this is the last change to Draw 3! When we eliminated the byes, I ended up with duplicate games, so, I redid it with a new eight team draw,  matched it up the already played week, and lined up the other weeks as closely as possible to what was previously scheduled. The new A pool draw is now on the Ladder League page at https://cornwallcurling.com/draws/wednesday-evening-ladder-league/

I have checked for duplicates, and I hope it’s good to go!

A few more fixes needed for Wed. night Ladder League A pool!

Looks like another round of corrections coming for the Ladder League A Pool!  I ended up with teams playing the same team on two different weeks when I eliminated the bye. Will send out another version soon, but the first week is fine!

Five Cornwall rinks off to Alberton this weekend for O’Connor Glass Under 16

O'Connor Glass

The Western Community Curling Club in Alberton is the scene for the 2014 O’Connor Glass / Curl PEI Provincial Under 16 Curling Championships, which begin Thursday evening. The 7 pm opening draw will also include four games at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary, with all eight girl’s rinks opening in O’Leary, and four of the five boy’s teams beginning play in Alberton. All games after the 7 pm Thursday draw will be at Western Community.

The girls play a triple knockout draw, qualifying four teams for a Page championship round, while the boys play a round robin, with the second and third place teams advancing to a semi-final, and the winner of the semi playing the 1st place team in the final..

Last year, the Rachel O’Connor rink from the Cornwall Curling Club went undefeated to win the girl’s section, while the Alex MacFadyen foursome from the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club in Summerside won the boy’s. MacFadyen and O’Connor are both back this year, with O’Connor playing third on the Lauren Lenentine rink. MacFadyen skipped last weekend’s winning team in the Under 18 event. His second from that event, Matthew MacDonald, is with him in this one as well, and he has picked up the runner-up skip from the U18, Tyler Smith as his third. and Ben Gardiner, from the Justin Campbell team as his lead.

Cornwall have five teams entered, including tthe Lenentine/O’Connor rink, and the Kristie Rogers and Katie Worth teams on the girl’s side, and the Donald DeWolfe and Devin Schut boys rinks.

Friday draws are at 10 am and 2 and 7 pm, with the opening ceremonies going at 1:15 pm. Saturday play is at 9 am, and 1, 5, and 9 pm. The girls’ Page round, where the 3rd and 4th qualifiers play off in one game, and the 1st and 2nd place teams square off in the other goes at 10 am Sunday, with the winner of the 1st vs 2nd game going directly to the 6 pm final, and the loser of that game playing the winner of the 3rd vs 4th place game in the semi-final at 2 pm. The winner of that game also goes to the final.

The boys’ round robin wraps up Saturday night, with tiebreakers, if needed, following Sunday at 10 am and, if required, 2 pm. The semi-final between the 2nd and 3rd place teams following the round robin and any tiebreakers goes at 2 pm if 0 or 1 tiebreaker, and 6 pm if two. The final goes at 6 pm. If two tiebreakers are needed, the final would move to 4:30 pm Monday.

Full schedule and draws, along with team rosters and live results are all available at the event website PEICurling.com/under16
