Veronica Smith picks up win over defending champ Heather Smith at Curl Atlantic Ch’ship

Cornwall’s Veronica Smith junior team played a great game this morning to pick up a win against defending champ Heather Smith of Halifax at the Curl Atlantic Championship at the CARI Complex in Charlottetown.

vsmithlivestreamScreen shot from BellAliant Livestream

Veronica stole a single in the opening end, a deuce in the third, and a single in the 4th to build up a 4-0 lead. Heather got on the board with one in the 5th. Veronica ran into trouble with a couple of heavy draws in the 6th end, and Heather picked up a triple to tie things up. Veronica picked up a deuce in the seventh to lead 6-4 coming home without hammer.

Lying 1 in the final end, Veronica made a great draw to freeze between and outcount two Team Heather Smith rocks in the 12 foot that were lying 2 and 3. Heather was light with her 1st shot. Veronica came in with a great guard which was also counting #3, leaving Heather with no way to score a deuce with her final shot, so it was handshake time, and will go in the books as a 6-4 win for Team Veronica Smith.

Welcome to another season – curling starts mid-October!

We’re busy getting prepared for another season of curling here at the Cornwall Curling Club. Our Club, which emphasizes the social and recreation aspects of the sport (although we have some winning teams on the competitive side, too!) had the largest membership of any curling facility on PEI last season, but are always looking for new members. We have a huge daytime curling membership, both in single entry morning curling where teams are made up as players arrive, and in our competitive daytime team curling league, along with a very successful junior program (our junior women’s team are two-time PEI champs), and a full slate of single entry and team curling evening leagues as well. Our afternoon two-person stick curling teams have won Canadian championships in this exciting new sport that almost everyone can play!

frankmartinPhoto: President Martin delivers a rock in last season’s closing bonspiel

Registration for returning members: October 8

Curling School: October 14, 15, 16 – free evening adult curling lessons – come any or all nights. No obligation. Registration for new members will also take place at this time.

Daytime Curling start date: October 14

Evening curling start: Oct 19

Drop-In Curling Nights: Oct 17,  Nov 7, Jan 9,  Feb 20 (anyone can come – will be a drop in fee for non-members)

Gord Peters team wins annual Club golf tourney

The weather could only be described as “variable”, with everything from sunshine, to rain, to north winds, to dark clouds, and even a little sleet, but the rain mostly held off and, although it was quite cold for the first day of summer, the Cornwall Curling Club’s annual golf tourney at Countryview Golf Club went off without a hitch.

The big hit of the day was Countryview’s beautiful new clubhouse (we’ll see more of it later):

DSC08887

We got our scorecards and event rules (9 hole scramble, with special rule on number 9 – use 9 irons only until green) and headed out onto the course.

Here’s Jim Orr hitting a long drive, straight as an arrow down the fairway (sure looks like a contender for the men’s long drive prize!):

DSC08893

On the way by, we took a peek at the new powercart garage, put up this week (there’s a couple more big doors, not in the picture)

DSC08891

After we completed our nine holes, everyone headed back to the clubhouse for a drink or two, and a burger and sausage on a bun.

DSC08890

Most stayed inside, but a few hardy soles braved the outdoor deck.

DSC08896

Everyone listened intently as Bob Fowler and Rick Doiron got ready to announce the winners. Bob started out by thanking everyone for attending, Countryview for hosting, and the many sponsors for donating prizes, including: Countyview Golf , Clyde River Golf, Rustico Resort Golf, Prebilt Steel,  Traction Heavy Duty Parts, Island Storm basketball team, Kenmac Energy, Eastern Auto Supply, KFC, the Cornwall Curling Club, and YoungCo Manufacturing.

DSC08903

By the way, the new clubhouse is nice and bright, but the sun came out at the wrong time, so the pictures of the winners have too much light in places.

DSC08900

The men’s Closest to the Pin winner was Paul Durant:

DSC08905

The men’s Long Drive honours did, as predicted, go to Jim Orr:

DSC08906

The women’s Long Drive prize went to Krista Affleck:

DSC08907

As was the case last year, no female player was able to hit the green for the Closest to the Pin contest, so a draw was made, with Tracy MacDonald taking home the prize.

DSC08908

The prize for most “Honest” golfers went to the team of Tom Dunn, Val MacLean, and Lee Nickerson, who had a quite respectable score of 40.

Finally it was time to announce the winning team, who had a score of 33, four strokes ahead of the second place team (Len Gotell). The winners were the three person team of Gordon Peters, Dan Hughes, and Karen Fisher.

DSC08910

Photo (L-R): Dan Hughes Karen Fisher, Gordon Peters

The day wrapped up with drawing for the remaining prizes on the prize table. As usual, very few went home empty-handed.

Thanks to all the organizers, sponsors, Countryview management and staff, and participants for another great event.

On the way out, I snapped a few pictures of the decks and the amazing locker room downstairs, which features huge 32″ lockers, and an automatically opening door to get your stuff outside, and a card access entry with 24/7 access to get your gear and pullcart back in (BTW, Danny Young and YoungCo made the fancy fasteners on the locker doors).

If you missed the tourney and would like to take a look at Countryview’s new digs, they’re having an open house, in honour of 15 years of business, on Wednesday June 25th from 6 – 9 pm, with free munchies, live entertainment, and special drink and green fee prices!

Cornwall’s Veronica Smith wins $5000 Spirit of Sandra Scholarship from Sandra Schmirler Foundation!

OTTAWA – The Sandra Schmirler Foundation today announced the successful applicants for the 2014-2015 Spirit of Sandra $5,000 junior curling scholarships. “Once again, we were thrilled with the applicants and had a very difficult time selecting just 6 scholars”, said Theresa Breen, Foundation Chair. “Last year’s scholars all enjoyed success both at school and on the curling ice. They also all held highly successful fundraising events and showed a wonderful commitment to building Sandra’s legacy and awareness of the Foundation’s mandate”

veronica

PEICurling.com Photo: Veronica Smith

This is the second year for the $5,000 scholarships which will be funded from crowd sweeps at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Montreal, the Tim Horton’s Brier in Kamloops and Roar of the Rings in Winnipeg. “The Foundation is indebted to the Canadian Curling Association and the entire curling community for providing this opportunity for competitive curlers to engage with fans at these major curling events and collect money to fund these scholarships,” stated Breen.

The 2014 Spirit of Sandra Scholars are: Kristen Streifel from Clavet, Saskatchewan; Katherine Doerksen from Morden, Manitoba; Corryn Brown from Kamloops, BC; Veronica Smith from Breadalbane, PEI; Renelle Humphreys from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; and Jestyn Murphy from Mississauga, Ontario.

World Champion curlers Jon Mead and Cathy Overton-Clapham will once again volunteer as mentors to the scholars. “Cathy and I are honoured to continue to mentor these young competitive curlers and help them however we can to realize their own dreams”, declared Jon. Added Cathy, “Jon and I thoroughly enjoyed working with last year’s scholars and look forward to meeting and getting to know this new multi-talented group. We hope that together we can help them to build their competitive skills while balancing curling with school”. The 6 Scholars will join Cathy and Jon in August for a 2-day training session.

Each of the Scholars has committed to organizing a fundraiser in their local community to build awareness and raise money to support the mission of the Sandra Schmirler Foundation, which is to donate to Newborn Intense Care Units (NICUs) in hospitals across Canada for the purchase of life-saving equipment for babies born too soon, too small or too sick.

About the Sandra Schmirler Foundation:

The Sandra Schmirler Foundation was created in January, 2001 as a legacy to three-time world curling champion and Olympic gold medalist Sandra Schmirler, in recognition and celebration of her love of family. The Foundation raises and donates funds across Canada for the care of premature and critically ill babies recognizing that all “Champions Start Small”. The Foundation has now donated over $2.5 million to 34 newborn intensive care units in hospitals across the country.

Cornwall’s Aleya Quilty and Veronica Smith awarded Joyce Myers Trust Fund scholarships

CurlAtlantic-Logo_CMYKJoyce Myers Trust Fund curling scholarships and grants announced

The trustees of the Joyce Myers Trust Fund, established under Curl Atlantic from profits from the 2003 Brier and the 2005 Roar of the Rings curling events in Atlantic Canada, has announced the 2014 recipients of its Student/Athlete Scholarships and Curling Club Capital Works and Curl Atlantic Member Association Program Initiatives grants.

The 2014 Joyce Myers Scholarship recipients are:

Prince Edward Island ($500 each): Dylan Lowery, Aleya Quilty, Veronica Smith

Nova Scotia ($500 each): Brittany Black, Michael Brophy, Karlee Jones

Newfoundland and Labrador ($500 each): Sarah Ford

New Brunswick ($500 each): Jamie Ward, Shelby Wilson, Andrew Burgess

The 2014 Joyce Myers Capital Grant recipients will each receive $1500.  The successful curling centres are:

Doaktown Curling Club, NB

Charlottetown Curling Complex, PEI

Sydney Curling Club, NS

Caribou Curling Club, NL

The 2014 Program Initiative grant will be used to license the “Rocks and Rings” elementary school program throughout Atlantic Canada. “This joint initiative between Curl Atlantic and the four Atlantic associations appears to fit well with the intent of junior curling development of the Joyce Myers Trust Fund and with Curl Atlantic”, said Gary Wilson, Chair of Curl Atlantic. “The Rocks and Rings program is a great way to introduce and bring curling to the school setting. The program has received much attention during the televising of the CCA’s championship events, and is hugely popular across the country and in great demand.”

Backgrounder:

The Joyce Myers Trust Fund is an Atlantic Canada initiative to foster the development and promotion of the sport of curling throughout Atlantic Canada.

The Trust Fund, which was established from profits from the 2003 Nokia Brier and 2005 Tim Horton’s Roar of the Rings, provides funding for the development of curling in Atlantic Canada through grant opportunities for Curling Club Capital Works projects, Student/Athlete Scholarships, and Curl Atlantic Member Association Program Initiatives.

The trustees of the Joyce Myers Trust Fund announced plans for future investments in the sport of curling for Atlantic Canada and released its first grants during the 2009-2010 curling season.

Joyce Myers was inducted into both the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame and the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame as an athlete and a builder. Joyce’s accomplishments as an athlete, administrator, coach and official made her one of the most versatile and impacting persons in Nova Scotia sports. Her passion for sport and the countless hours she contributed to many individuals and events has left a lasting impression. Joyce was a true inspiration and mentor to many.

Capital Acquisition Grants

The Trustees of the Joyce Myers Trust Fund created the Capital Acquisition Grants as a means to assist member curling clubs within Atlantic Canada with capital projects. Expenses that are of a special and/or extraordinary nature will be eligible for funding. In other words, programs and initiatives that are both unusual and occur infrequently; they are not part of the regular, day-to-day operation of the club. Listed below are a few possibilities:

The repair, replacement, purchase or construction of a curling facility or part of a curling facility. For example, the repair or replacement of a curling club roof;

The repair, replacement or purchase of a plant asset or piece of equipment. For example, the repair or replacement of ice making equipment.

The purchase of special curling equipment. For example, the purchase of little rocks for a junior curling program;

Exempt from funding are any expenses of an operational nature. For example, membership dues, utility and tax bills do not qualify.

Scholarships

Curl Atlantic has implemented a scholarship to curlers who have enrolled in full time studies in a post-secondary institution. The intention of these awards is to allow talented athletes to devote primary sources of time and energy to training, rather than extensive employment in order to fund post-secondary education. Recipients will be expected to devote a full-time, shared commitment to sport and education exclusively. This award is not intended to reward past achievements but rather a means to pursue further achievements that surpass the current level of performance. Priority will be given to athletes attending Atlantic universities, colleges or vocational schools.

$1500 is allocated per province, with up to three recipients receiving $500 each.

Great job by Club volunteers and staff yesterday at the Road Builders dinner!

The Cornwall Curling Club did a fantastic job yesterday putting on the lobster/steak dinner for the PEI Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association. Preparations ran ahead of schedule, helped out by a beautiful day, which meant we could get into the upstairs hall an hour early, as the daycare kids who normally use it went outside. By all reports, everyone was extremely pleased with the meal, and it sure looked like everyone from the Association had a great time.

“We appreciate all the work that everyone working at the Cornwall Curling Club did to ensure our Annual Lobster (or Steak) Dinner was a success.  We were very pleased.  Thank you very much.”

-Stella Keliher, PEI Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association

Thanks to Joe MacKinnon for organizing the dinner, which will generate some additional revenue for our Club, and all the volunteers, including some, including Ray, Carlene, Helen, Dick, Bryan, who were here most of the day, the lobster cutters, the food prep crew,  the setup crew, the barbecue crew, the food platers and servers, the cleanup crew, to Bev for handling many details, and Bev and Al for keeping up with the bar service.

A special thanks to Joe Murphy, Stella Keliher and everyone else at the PEI Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association for choosing us to cater their event!

Here’s a picture from the speeches after the meal.

DSC_0225

Junior Female Athlete of the Year– Veronica Smith

Veronica Smith of Breadalbane, who curls out of the Cornwall club, and is a business student at UPEI, had another very busy season, for the second year in a row skipping teams at two national championships and, for the first time, playing in a major international cashspiel, and also organizing a major curling recruitment event on PEI.

Her team again won the provincial Pepsi Junior women’s championship, going through round robin play undefeated, and making a clutch last-rock draw in the final end to win the final, against the Amanda MacLean team, who they also faced in the previous season’s final.

Veronica and her team then advanced to the Canadian Juniors, where they finished round robin play with a 2 and 4 win-loss record. Although they did not advance to the Championship round, they finished at the top of the seeding division with a 5-4 record.

At the nationals, Veronica was selected to give the English “Thank you” on behalf of the players at the banquet. She is an excellent speaker, and her thank-you was very well received.

She was given a special award from guest speaker Colleen Jones for being the Loudest Yeller. This award was voted on by a show of hands by all who attended the National Banquet.

Teaming up, as she did the previous year, with three members of the MacLean team, Veronica came from behind with a deuce in the ninth and a single steal in the 10th end to win the B final of the Atlantic University Curling Championships, and repeat as a representative at the CIS/CCA Canadian University Curling Championships, where they finished with a 2-5 record.

The Smith team was one of 16 women’s rinks participating in the 20th annual edition of the JSI-OVCA international Junior SuperSpiel, at a number of clubs in the Ottawa area. They finished with a 3-3 record.

As a business student at UPEI, Veronica took on the task of organizing the RBC Sports Day in Canada “Try Curling” sessions, with all seven PEI curling clubs taking part, and a number of new curlers taking up the sport as club members.

She also volunteered at the 2014 Players Championship Grand Slam of Curling event in Summerside, and participated as a rower at the 2013 Canada Summer Games.

Junior Male Athlete of the Year– Brooks Roche

Montague’s Brooks Roche, who plays third for the Tyler Smith junior team out of Montague and Crapaud, is a student athlete who excels both on and off the ice.

The Smith team made the finals at both the Pepsi Juniors and the O’Connor Glass Under 18 Championships this year, with Brooks receiving the men’s Fair Play Sportsmanship Award at the Juniors. This award is voted on by all the teams at the event, and presented annually to a player who demonstrates sportsmanship and fair play both on and off the ice.

The team won the Under 21 men’s division of the 14th annual Codiac Maritime Junior Bonspiel in Moncton in October, stealing the second extra end to outlast a Halifax team in the final.

The Smith team also won one of the two PEI men’s Training Teams spots for the 2015 Canada Games, winning a see-saw tiebreaker over the Leslie Noye team from the Western Community Club in Alberton in the selection trials.

He also excels in soccer, where he was Captain of the Provincial Champion U-16 Boys First Division Eastern Eagles, and played AAA High School Soccer with the Montague Vikings.

Brooks maintains a rigorous training regime both on and off the curling ice, and spent time in the month of September on the ice at Crapaud, and after school in Montague throughout the winter. He also participated in league play on two teams in Montague. Off-ice, he always places at the top of the physical testing for the Canada Games training teams, and, despite a broken leg in March, which necessitated an aggressive rehabilitation program, he has returned to being a very active participant in the Canada Games training program. Brooks also participated in the Whitecap Curling Camp in August 2013, and attended the Grand Slam of Curling exhibition matches for the Canada Games training teams in Summerside in April, although he was unable to curl in the event due to his injury.

Brooks also excels academically. He was the Top Academic Aggregate Student in Grade 10 at Montague Senior High in 2012-13, and was the Atlantic Spokesperson/Ambassador for the IWK Molly Appeal for Medical Research in 2013. He was elected to attend and lead sessions at the 2013 Canadian Student Leadership Conference, and was selected to attend the 2014 Canadian Student Leadership Conference in BC. He was also a Grade 11 Student Council Representative at his school.

Senior Female Athlete of the Year – Kim Dolan

In the 2013-2014 season Charlottetown’s Kim Dolan made her tenth appearance, representing her province in each of the past four decades, at the national women’s championship, and has now played over 100 games at the national event. At the provincial event, her team, which includes Rebecca Jean MacDonald, her daughter Sinead, Jackie Read, and alternate Michala Robison, beat the Kathy O’Rourke rink by a 6-4 score in an extra-end final to advance to the national Scotties. Kim holds the record for the most provincial women’s championship wins.

Kim also won a cashspiel in Charlottetown this past season, beating a field which included both men’s and women’s rinks.

Kim is a longtime member of the Charlottetown Curling Complex, joining as a Junior in 1974 (and advancing to the national Juniors her first three years), and continues to be involved in club activities, including serving on a sub-committee of the Board of Directors on the promotion of the Complex.

Kim is a PEI curling Hall of Fame member, being inducted in October 2012.

Senior Male Athlete of the Year – Eddie MacKenzie

Charlottetown’s Eddie MacKenzie made his fourth trip to the Brier, and his second in a row, this past season, improving on the previous year’s record to finish with a 4-7 win-loss record. His team placed near the top of the Charlottown Curling Complex’s Super League, and also took part in the Curl Atlantic Championship, where Eddie was also an organizing committee member. He won the event in 2012.

Eddie’s busy season also included serving as Past President of the Charlottetown Curling Complex, as well as travelling to a number of off-Island curling events, including the Challenge Casino de Charlevoix cashspiel in Clermont Quebec.

Coach of the year – Pat Quilty

Pat Quilty of Charlottetown coached Cornwall’s Meghan Ching and Lauren Lenentine rinks during this past season, with the Ching team coming second in the O’Connor Glass Under 18 event, and tieing for sixth spot in the Pepsi Juniors Under 21 championship, while the Lenentine foursome were runners-up in the O’Connor Glass Under 16 provincials. He also coached the Ching team to a tie for first place in the Future Scotties event, and a third place finish in the Canada Games Selection Trials.

Pat was the recipient of the girls’ team coaching award at the O’Connor Glass Under 1 event, while his daughter, Aleya, won the same award for the boys’ teams. These awards are voted on by their coaching peers.

Pat is a very dedicated coach, holding three, two hour practices each week, and also coached the team at multiple off-Island tournaments, and coached at the Whitecap Curling Academy last summer as well.

Pat is always supportive, motivational, encouraging and energetic when it comes to curling. He puts full effort into making sure his teams are as prepared as possibl for all of their tournaments, and he is always available to help out around clubs in any way he can – he even volunteered to coach teams that were not his own while still coaching his own girls team (during the same tournament) , just to help out young teams who are still looking for coaches.

Volunteer of the Year – Shelley MacFadyen

Over the last three years, Summerside’s Shelley MacFadyen has been instrumental in revitalizing the junior curling program here at the Silver Fox, with yearly membership increases through her leadership and commitment.

Shelley has evolved the Little Rock and Intermediate programs to a point where the young Little Rockers are forming teams and competing in provincial and recreational events, including the KFC Provincial Under 13 championship and funspiel, comprising four of the 16 teams entered, a testament to her dedication. She also coached all the Fox entries at the events, and two of her teams placed 1st and second in the championship.

Her administrative skills were brought into play again at the Grand Slam of Curling Players’ Championship event at Credit Union Place, where she arranged to have the junior curlers involved in the opening ceremonies, marching the teams into the event, building interest in the sport by having the juniors involved with the greats in the sport. Silver Fox juniors were also well represented at the Junior Rockstarts program held during the final morning of the event, giving the young curlers experience on championship arena ice, and some TV exposure, with clips from the event being shown on national TV.

On the provincial side, Shelley has worked closely with Curl PEI to provide events and developmental opportunities at the Silver Fox, and has travelled with the curlers to other clubs to support their events.

From the first slide of the season, to the final moments of the closing banquet, Shelley makes sure that each child is engaged through a careful blend of skills development, competition, and fun. Everyone is thankful that Shelley chooses to donate her valuable time to the kids of the junior program.

Team of the Year – Alex MacFadyen rink

The Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club team of Skip: Alex MacFadyen, Third: James Dalton, Second: Matthew MacDonald and Lead: Parker MacFadyen, with coach Dave MacFadyen , are this year’s team of the year, capturing first place in the men’s division at this year’s O’Connor Glass provincial Under 18 curling championships, and, playing in the higher Under 21 age category, finishing in fourth place in the eight team field at the Pepsi Juniors. The team, who beat the Tyler Smith rink from Montague in the Under 18 final, advanced to the Atlantic Under 18 championships in Oromocto New Brunswick, where they finished third.

The MacFadyen rink were also the first of the two teams to qualify for the two men’s training spots to be the 2015 Canada Games representatives for PEI, going through round robin play at the Selection Trials with a perfect 5-0 record. MacFadyen and the other qualifying men’s rink, skipped by Tyler Smith, will now square off in a best of three series in November, with the winning rink advancing to the Canada Games in Prince George BC from February 13—March 1, 2015.

Umpire of the Year – Cliff Poirier

Summerside’s Cliff Poirier is a CCA Level 3 umpire who is conscientious and hard working and can always be relied on to do a great job, whether at a provincial, a national, or an international “Grand Slam” event.

Cliff was Chief Umpire at several Provincial events this year and handled each in a professional manner. He is well respected by the players at all age and ability levels. Cliff is always fair and makes any necessary decisions only after a thorough evaluation of the situation. He is not afraid to ask for assistance, if required, which itself is an admirable trait.

On the regional level, he was a volunteer at the Curl Atlantic Championship, an event featuring Atlantic Canada’s top curlers.

Cliff was also an umpire at the Canadian Juniors in Liverpool this season, lending his skill and expertise to this national event.

He was also in charge of on-ice volunteers at the Grand Slam of Curling Player’s Championship in April, a televised event featuring some of the best teams from around the world. He oversaw the umpires, timers and scorekeepers and did the scheduling, re-scheduling and other duties extremely well. He also was the supervising umpire at every draw, a very time-consuming and, no doubt exhausting, role.

Cliff also sits on the Curl PEI Board of Directors as the representative for the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club, and represents Curl PEI on the Curl Atlantic board. He was also a finalist for Official of the Year at the Sport PEI Awards, and taught new officials at a Level I Officiating course.

Cliff gives a lot of hours as a volunteer to help the sport of curling and is extremely deserving of the Umpire of the Year award

Marion Dockendorff Scotties Appreciation Award Winner– Nancy Cameron

This year’s winner of the Marion Dockendorff Scotties Appreciation Award is Charlottetown’s Nancy Cameron.

Nancy has been on six winning PEI women’s championship teams over the years, and has also been to the nationals a number of times as a fifth player. This year, she changed her role from curling in the Scotties to coaching in it, serving as the coach for the Kim Dolan rink at the national event in Montreal.

Nancy also volunteers as a coach with the PEI Special Olympics Curling Program.

She still curls, on Monday evenings at the Charlottetown Curling Complex, and is lucky to have her daughter curl with her.

Nancy was introduced to curling at an early age by her father Doug, a member of the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame. He played in the first national Schoolboy championship in 1950, while she took part in the Canadian Junior Women’s in 1980.

Volunteers needed to prepare and serve food for PEI Roadbuilders supper on June 5

roadbuilders

As a fundraiser for the Club, we have agreed to prepare and serve a lobster (with steak option) dinner for the PEI Roadbuilders and Heavy Construction Association on Thursday June 5, and need volunteers to help out with preparation and serving. This is the same group who have a bonspiel and a BBQ steak lunch at our Club every winter. They have a reception at 6:30, and dinner at 7:30 pm, at the Club. Click for details on the Roadbuilders website.

As well, we have a meeting planned this Sunday May 25 at 6:30 pm at the Club to iron out the details. Please feel free to attend and lend your suggestions on what is needed to put on a quality event for our client. Whether or not you plan to attend on Sunday, please let Joe MacKinnon know by email at mackinnonsplumbing@pei.aibn.com if you can help out, and in what capacity. See estimated timeslots and duties below.

We estimate that we need the following volunteers:

5 people at 4 pm to work at banquet setup, tossed salad prep, and cooking of baked potatoes.

2 people at 4:30 pm to cut up 80 cooked lobster and put in trays.

2 people at 5:30 to get 22 steaks and condiments ready to barbecue

5 people at 7 pm to serve the dinner.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

Annual General Meeting highlights

agm-logo

The Cornwall Curling Club’s Annual General Meeting was held tonight. Club President Paul Neima reported another successful season, with membership increasing from 272 last year to 294 this year – the only club on PEI to report a membership increase, and for the first time, the PEI club with the largest membership.  Club revenues increased over $10,000 over last season, even though membership rates and bar prices were not increased. A number of capital improvements were realized, with the assistance of an Island Community Fund grant, including a new Ice King scraper, new boot cleaners, a sofa. larger viewing monitors for the ice area, a laptop computer for live scoring and other purposes, a new ice cube maker, and new club brooms.

A number of successful bonspiels were held, along with new Friday night drop-in curling events, which brought new curlers into the Club. Club members had considerable success of the provincial, regional and national scene, with provincial Juniors, Masters, Stick, Under 16, and Junior Mixed winners at the provincial level, along with winning most of the curling and stick curlingcategories at the 55 Plus Games. Regionally, UPEI’s Veronica Smith rink, comprised of Cornwall Club members, won an AUS berth in the CIS/CCA championships, and Cornwall teams won both Maritime Stick championship divisions, while the Shirley Berry rink won the Maritime Masters Women’s Division. Cornwall’s Chloé McCloskey and coach Bill Hope won a silver medal in the Canadian Juniors Mixed Doubles event. Derek MacEwen won Sport PEI Amateur Sport Awards administrator of the year while the UPEI women’s team won two awards at the CIS/CCA championships.

One of the biggest issues facing the Club this season was the renegotiation of our rental agreement with the Town of Cornwall for our new Clubhouse and our ice shed. A price was negotiated which, although an increase, is considered to be reasonable. A members’ survey was conducted with over 90 members responding, which will help determine the direction for the Club to take next season.

Brent Irving was acclaimed as a new Board member.

Cornwall curlers named UPEI Panther Athletes of the Week

(UPEI) UPEI Athletics and Recreation have announced that the Women’s Curling Team; skipped by Veronica Smith, and Brian Ofori, Men’s Basketball, are the UPEI Panther Athletes of the Week for the week of December 30 – January 5. UPEI Athletics and Recreation showcases these talented athletes to recognize their hard work and dedication to their respective sports throughout the season. UPEI Athletes of the Week are also nominated to Atlantic University Sport and Canadian Interuniversity Sport for possible recognition in the region and/or country.

smithpanthersPhoto (L-R): Veronica Smith, Jane DiCarlo, Emily Gray, Aleya Quilty

The UPEI women’s curling team won the “B” pool final at the Atlantic University Curling Championships hosted by UNB on January 3–5. The Veronica Smith-skipped team earned the right to represent the Atlantic region at the CIS University Curling Championship in Regina, Saskatchewan on March 19–23. In the championship game, UPEI took two in the 9th and then stole one in the 10th for the win. The team finished with a 3–1 record. Team members include business student and skip Veronica Smith of Breadalbane; science student and third Jane DiCarlo of Charlottetown; science student and second Emily Gray of O’Leary, and science student and lead Aleya Quilty of Charlottetown. All members are enrolled in their second year of study at UPEI.

UPEI (and Cornwall’s) Veronica Smith steals win to advance to CIS/CCA nationals!

The Veronica Smith-skipped UPEI Women’s Panthers, who are all members of the Cornwall Curling Club, will be returning to the CIS/CCA curling nationals, following a come-from-behind win this afternoon in the B final at the Atlantic University Curling Championships at the Capital Winter Club in Fredericton New Brunswick. The UPEI team was trailing 7-5 after seven ends, after their opponents, the Sara Spafford team from SMU, picked up five points in the fourth end. Smith blanked the eighth, scored a deuce in the ninth to tie the game at 7, and stole a single in the final end for an 8-7 win.

Smith lost a close 4-2 decision to the Saint Mary’s team in their low-scoring opening game on Friday, which the UPEI team described as “a nail-biter ’til the last rock”. UPEI was scheduled to play against the loser of a game between UNB and DAL Saturday, but DAL withdrew from the tournament, and the Panthers were given a bye in that game, and advanced to the another nail-biter, the B semi-final game this morning against Acadia, skipped by Micayla Dorey, which UPEI came from behind to win on a measure in an extra end by a 7-6 score. Smith was trailing 4-2 after five, but took a single in six, and stole the next three ends to pull ahead. Dorey tied the game with a deuce in the tenth, and Smith won the game on the measure in the extra.

UNB, skipped by Jennifer Armstrong, won the “A” final Saturday evening, stealing five points in the 9th end in an 11-4 victory over SMU.

Blues win PEI Brewing Co. Closing Spiel by a large margin

The “insignicant” lead that the Blue (Jacobs) team had over the Red (Jones) rink had on Friday night became much more significant on Saturday, with the Blues winning most of the games, and ending up winning by the widest v margin in the history of our closing spiel, with a final point count of 267.5 to 157.

Even a visit from J Jones herself could not spur the Reds onto victory!

Also in attendance for our closing spiel were Murdoch and Muirhead from Scotland, making an early appearance in PEI to scout things out before they compete in the Players’ Championship, later this month in Summerside:

The Blue team, obviously better at curling than at math, rallied their troops, even though their win was a fait accompli by that time.

dsc08431

Meanwhile, the Reds were fueling up on burgers and sausages, hoping for a miracle to occur in the afternoon.

dsc08439

Unfortuately, it didn’t, and the most successful Red winner all day was Lorianne Davies, who won the reverse draw for a free one-draw membership next year. Her husband Angus (Blue), along with Danielle Girard (Red) and Dean MacEachern (Blue) won Balance Plus brooms in the same draw.

During the afternoon, Jeff Taylor (who bears some resemblance to J Jones) kept the quarters flying with some trivia (even though Alanis Morissette it NOT the youngest  number 1 Grammy album of the year winner – it’s Taylor Swift!)

dsc08445

Jeff (sorry about the focus – it’s hard to shoot pictures and toss quarters at the same time!)

Finally, it was meal time, and everyone enjoyed a delicious supper of lasagna, garlic toast and caesar salad, with Skor bar trifle for dessert, served up by Trent DeRoche catering.

dsc08448

dsc08449

dsc08451

After supper, it was time for the wrapup and winners’ circle (and the agony of defeat for we Reds!). Master of Ceremonies Bob Fowler took to the mic (although he really doesn’t need one!)

dsc08452

Photo: Bob Fowler

He thanked all the event sponsors, including PEI Brewing Company, Country Style donuts for the morning coffee, and Countryview Golf Club for gift certificates.

Club Vice President Frank Martin then presented principal bonspiel organizer Carlene Peters with flowers as a token of appreciation for all her work, which even included getting flowers and making medals for the event winners, as well as rounding up all the prizes.

Carlene thanked everyone who helped out, including Ray and Barb who worked on the draw, and even yours truly for publicizing the event (although it sounds like she found my Friday night update a bit biased towards the Reds!)

dsc08457

Photo: Frank, Carlene

Finally, the big moment was at hand. Carlene loaded up her flowers, and, with the help of Reds Angus Kennedy and Lorianne Davies, got ready to hand out the medals and let the Blue teams, in order of points earned, choose their prizes from the tables.

Top Blue team was the Lester Callbeck rink, which included Joe Callaghan, Ann Greyborn, and Dean MacEachern

As a grand finalé, all the Blues posed with their trophy and medals for a group shot.

This year’s event was a huge success, with a full draw, and wrapped up another successful season at the Cornwall Curling Club. In closing, Bob reminded everyone about the annual golf tourney at Countryview, coming up on June 21 (email the club at cornwallcurling@eastlink.ca if you’d like to sign up). We’ve also got our Annual General Meeting coming up (more info as it approaches). We hope to see everyone back here in mid-October for our next season!

Ray Biagé and Paul Neima rinks win Wed. Ladder League Final Round

The third and final round of the season for the Wednesday evening Ladder League wrapped up last night, with the Ray Biagé  rink winning the A pool, and the Paul Neima team taking the B. Sponsor for this round was Clyde River Golf Links. The winning teams from both pools will be receiving prizes for winning the round.

The Biagé rink, which included third Mark MacDonald, second Rebecca Rolfe, and lead Derek MacEwen, had only one loss in the five week round – the same record as the Paul Durant team, but they beat Durant in their round robin encounter and take first place.

The Neima team won all four of their games in the round (they had one bye). The Donald DeWolfe rink were runners-up, with one loss and a bye. The Joe Mackinnon foursome had the same record, but lost to DeWolfe in their game. The Neima rink includes third Dwayne McNeill, second Joe Callaghan, and lead Ankur Deshpande

Here is a summary of this season’s winners. Great to see that we are sharing the prizes around, with no team winning twice!

Round One A pool: Emily Keen, Kayla Schut, Jessica Watts, Jenny Mutch
Round One B Pool: Robert Thibodeau, Angus Kennedy, Dave Hunt, Des Nantes

Round Two A pool: Karen Currie, Valerie Acorn, Mark Perry, Leonard Gotell
Round Two B pool: Paul Durant, Jamie Ballem, Danny Kneabone, Alan Acorn

Round Three A pool: Ray Biagé, Mark MacDonald, Rebecca Rolfe, Derek MacEwen
Round Three B pool: Paul Neima, Dwayne McNeill, Joe Callaghan, Ankur Deshpande

We missed four weeks this season due to inclement weather (which always seemed to arrive on Wednesday!) and had an extra week off at Christmas due to Christmas and New Year’s days being on Wednesday, and wish to thank everyone for sticking with us, with these issues to deal with.  See you again next season!
