Wednesday night – sponsor and prize updates

The prizes have all been reconciled, and sponsors adjusted for all nights.

As there is an extra round in our draw this year, we don’t have enough sponsorship to cover the A pool runner-up prize in the final round. Our apologies to the  Neima team for this – but at least they are already getting two other prizes, for winning the first two rounds in the A pool.

Here is the finalized list of prize winners and sponsors:

Round one, sponsored  by Howard Johnson Dutch Inn.

A Pool winner: Paul Neima, Kevin Arsenault, Mike Lafontaine, Dwayne MacNeil

B Pool winner: Joerg Soltermann, Lew Black, Hans Wicki, Dan Delaney

Round two, sponsored by Don Lowther Snow Clearing

A Pool winner: Paul Neima, Kevin Arsenault, Mike Lafontaine, Dwayne MacNeil

B Pool winner: Bob MacWilliams, John Berry, Roy Coffin, Jim Farquharson

Round three, sponsored by Clyde River Golf Course

A Pool winner (corrected): Gordon Peters, Hank Kamphuis, Gerald Dykerman, Pat MacInnis

B Pool winner: Bob Fowler, Paul Durant, Jamie Ballem, Alan Acorn

Round four, sponsored by Chandlers Cabinets and Mill Work and Royal Garden Chinese Restaurant.

Wednesday evening Ladder League wraps up with Fowler and Groves winning final round

The Bob Fowler rink won the fourth and final round, sponsored by Clyde River Golf Course, of the A pool of the Wednesday Night Ladder League, winning all their games in the  round. The Paul Neima rink were second, losing only to Bob’s team, by a 9-4 score on the final night. Both teams will receive prizes on May 11.

Three teams, skipped by Aaron Campbell, Ray Biagé, and Greg Groves, had three wins in the B pool, but Groves and Biagé had one more point, as the Campbell rink did not play one of their games. The Groves and Biagé rinks met on the last night, with Groves coming out on top of a very closely fought 9-8 battle, so they will win the round and the final prize.

It was also brought to my attention that I had the incorrect winner for round 3. I reported, incorrectly, that Karen Currie had beaten Gord Peters in their A pool encounter on Feb 8. I rechecked the result, and that was not the case – it was actually a 9-3 win for Peters, who will win the round (sorry Karen!), beating both second place teams, Currie and Bob MacWilliams, in their games.

Here is the complete winners list for the year (Team rosters as they were on the board. If they are not correct, let us know).

The winners of the A and B pools for each round, as well as the A pool runner-up in the final round, will receive prizes from our generous sponsors during our May 11 Annual General Meeting and Awards Night.

Round one, sponsored by Don Lowther Snow Removal, and Howard Johnson Dutch Inn.

A Pool winner: Paul Neima, Kevin Arsenault, Mike Lafontaine, Dwayne MacNeil

B Pool winner: Joerg Soltermann, Lew Black, Hans Wicki, Dan Delaney

Round two, sponsored by Murphy’s Cornwall Pharmacy

A Pool winner: Paul Neima, Kevin Arsenault, Mike Lafontaine, Dwayne MacNeil

B Pool winner: Bob MacWilliams, John Berry, Roy Coffin, Jim Farquharson

Round three, sponsored by Cornwall Pizza Delight

A Pool winner (corrected): Gordon Peters, Hank Kamphuis, Gerald Dykerman, Pat MacInnis

B Pool winner: Bob Fowler, Paul Durant, Jamie Ballem, Alan Acorn

Round four, sponsored by Clyde River Golf Links

A pool winner: Bob Fowler, Paul Durant, Jamie Ballem, Alan Acorn

A pool runner-up: Paul Neima, Kevin Arsenault, Mike Lafontaine, Dwayne MacNeil

B pool winner: Greg Groves, Winston Taylor, Donald Weeks, Frank Weiler

Thanks to everyone who participated in another great season of the Wednesday Evening Ladder League!

Leafs win the Stanley Cup at Countryview Golf Closing Spiel!

More than the ice was frozen over at the Cornwall Curling Club on Saturday, as the Leafs soundly defeated the Canadiens to win the coveted Stanley Cup, only the second time in eight months that the Cup was in Cornwall (click for previous Cup appearance), and the first time that the playoffs between these two Original Six teams were held at our Club, thanks to the assistance of our great sponsors Countryview Golf Course. Those of us who won the Friday night trivia know, of course, that the last time the Leafs beat the Habs for the Cup was 1967, so this was truly an historic occasion, as evidenced by the great joy shown by the winning team in the official photo:

20120414_105

;

As well, some of the players took the opportunity to hoist the cup in the air themselves:

20120414_96

The surprising victory by the Leafs became obvious by the third round of the playoffs, on Saturday morning, when the Leafs came from behind to tie two games, taking three in the last period to tie one, and a big five in the final frame to tie another. The carnage against the Habs continued for the rest of the day, with the Leafs taking 300 points, and the Habs only 189 over the two day playoff series.

As well as the on-ice activities, both teams participated in off-ice hockey/golf themed sports, including hitting a puck into a golf hole with a putter, putting a golf ball into the hole using a hockey stick, and using a mini-stick to hit a target with a poker chip. Both teams appeared to be very experienced in the sport of golf, and the off-ice activities resulted in a dead heat.

The awards night was held following the final games, with Bob Fowler filling in for Ron MacLean, who apparently had something else to do. All the Leafs got fabulous prizes, and sponsor Countryview even had a prize for each of the Habs!

20120414_93

Additional awards included a one-night “season pass” to the Cornwall Curling Club, won by former Hab fan Ray Biagé, who was seen wearing Leafs colours all weekend, and a big Panasonic LCD TV, won by Julie Mitchell (bartender Carol Sweetapple’s daughter, who lives in Halifax). There were also prizes throughout the day during the reverse draw for the pass, and door prizes after the main awards were given out.

The lavish awards dinner was catered by student chefs from the Culinary Institute of Canada, and included barbecued pork, baked potatoes, salad, coleslaw, rolls, and Two Bite Brownies for dessert.

Click to view a photo album of Saturday’s activities.

Thanks to the event organizers, including Rob and his new bride, Sherri, Karen, Carl, and Kris from our great sponsors Countryview Golf, trivia master Angus, MC Bob, anthem singer Debby, off-ice games coordinators including Jamie, the kitchen and cleanup crews, the Culinary cooks, the sixteen teams who took part, Manager Bev, bartenders Carol and Al, icemaker Lance, ice crew including Jeff, and everyone else who helped make our Leafs vs Habs closing bonspiel at great success!

The Cornwall Curling Club season wraps up with the Juniors pizza and skating party on Sunday, our Annual General Meeting and Awards night, May 11 at the Club beginning at 6 pm, and our annual golf tourney, June 9 at Countryview (now open for the season – book your tee-times at CountryviewGolf.com). Contact Carl or Karen at Countryview to sign up for the golf tourney. And curling is not over yet – don’t forget, the world’s best curlers are in Summerside starting Tuesday night for the Players’ Championship – don’t miss it!

Leafs gain early lead in series, but Habs not worried at Countryview Golf Closing

Leafs vs Habs

After the first day of the playoffs between the Leafs and the Canadiens, taking place this year at the Cornwall Curling Club, the Leafs are leading the series 104.5 to 75.5. The Habs, though, have won the championship the last two years, and are not at all worried, as they always come on strong in the final games (and, besides, the Leafs haven’t won the Cup since 1967!). The Habs are also winning in off-ice activity for the coveted Stanley Cup, with the Danny Kneabone line taking the round two trivia contest for knowing the most about the two teams (didn’t find out who won round one, but I’m sure they were red as well!).

Action gets underway this morning at 9:30, with four rounds today, followed by the awards ceremony.

Two new champs at The Dominion this year

The Alan Inman rink from the Crapaud Community Curling Club and the Nola Murphy foursome from Summerside’s Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club are the new “The Dominion” provincial curling club champions, winning their respective finals  this afternoon at the Montague Curling Club, and advancing to the national The Dominion Curling Club Championship, November 19-24 at the Scarboro Golf and Country Club in Scarborough Ont.

Both of this afternoon’s contests were close, with Inman and his rink of third Stephen Thomson, second Gordon Fall, and lead Tony Quigley edging the defending champion Donal Clarey team from the host club by a 6-5 score, and the Murphy team, with third Donna Arsenault, second Paulette Richard, and lead Elspeth Carmody, getting by last year’s runners-up, the Marie Ford team from Crapaud, by a 4-3 score.

Inman had a 5-2 lead after six ends, when Clarey tied it up with a triple in the seventh, but Inman had last rock advantage coming home and recorded a single for the win. The women’s game was low-scoring with three blank ends, with Murphy trailing 3-2 going into the final end, and scoring a deuce for the victory. Other members of the runner-up Ford team are Julie Mutch, Vivian Holm, and Heather MacRae, while Larry Richards, David Rice, and Steven MacLeod complete the Clarey foursome.

The Ford and Clarey teams earned byes to the finals by virtue of finishing round robin play Saturday in first place, with 4-1 and 5-0 records respectively, with the second and third place teams battling this morning to advance to the final. In the semis, Murphy eliminated the defending champion Lorianne Davies rink from Cornwall with an 8-1 win, opening with a three point first end and a single steal in the second end to build an early lead.  The men’s game was close in the first half, with Inman and his  team taking a 3-2 lead over Western’s Daryl MacDonald rink into the fifth end. The Crapaud squad took over the scoreboard in the second half, stealing a single in the fifth, a deuce in the sixth and another single in seven to win 7-2 and advance to the final.

In the round robin, which wrapped up on Saturday, the Inman rink placed second in the men’s section with a 4-1 record, while Western’s MacDonald foursome was third at 3-2.

Davies and Murphy both finished the round robin with 3-2 records. Murphy beat Davies 9-5 in their round robin encounter and was awarded second place.

Finishing out of the playoffs in the men’s section was Bob Fowler and his Cornwall rink at 2-3, Blair Jay and his Silver Fox team at 1-4, and the Pat Birtwistle team from Charlottetown, who did not manage to pick up a win in the event.

Gail Greene and her Montague rink and Rushell MacDonald and her Western team both ended play at 2-3 on the women’s side, with Cathy MacDougall of Charlottetown finishing at 1-4.

No repeat for Davies team at The Dominion

The 2 pm finals are set after semi-final action this morning at the provincial The Dominion Curling Club Championship at the Montague Curling Club. The Marie Ford team from Crapaud and the defending champion Donald Clarey foursome had previously earned byes to the women’s and men’s finals by finishing round robin play yesterday in first place, with the second and third place teams battling this morning to advance to the final. The Ford foursome will be playing Nola Murphy and her Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club team from Summerside, who eliminated the defending champion Lorianne Davies rink from Cornwall with an 8-1 win this morning, opening with a three point first end and a single steal in the second end to build an early lead.  The men’s game was close in the first half, with Alan Inman and his Crapaud team taking a 3-2 lead over Western’s Daryl MacDonald rink into the fifth end. The Crapaud squad owned the scoreboard in the second half, stealing a single in the fifth, a deuce in the sixth and another single in seven to win 7-2 and advance to the final. Other members of the Clarey team are Larry Richards, David Rice, and Steven MacLeod. Playing with Inman are Stephen Thomson, Gordon Fall, and Tony Quigley. Julie Mutch, Vivian Holm, and Heather MacRae round out the Ford foursome, while Donna Arsenault, Paulette Richard, and Elspeth Carmody complete the Murphy team.

Round robin play wrapped up Saturday evening, with the Clarey rink from the host club finishing in first place in the men’s section with a perfect 5-0 win-loss record, and the Ford team from the Crapaud Community Curling Club winning the women’s section with  a 4-1 win-loss record.

Davies gets birthday present: a win at The Dominion; both Cornwall rinks are at 1-2

Two rinks, the defending champion Donald Clarey men’s team from the host Montague Curling Club, and last years’s women’s runner-up rink, the Marie Ford rink from the Crapaud Community Curling Club remain undefeated following Friday play at the PEI The Dominion Curling Club Championship. The Clarey team includes third Larry Richards, second David Rice, and lead Steven MacLeod, while Julie Mutch, Vivian Holm, and Heather MacRae complete the Ford rink.

In the Friday evening draw, Clarey scored three points in the final end to hand the Alan Inman team from Crapaud their first loss with a 6-5 come-from-behind win to sit at 4-0, with Inman at 3-1. Clarey led 3-0 after 5 ends, but Inman took a triple in the sixth and stole a deuce in seven to bring a two point lead into the last end, but Clarey came back with the triple for the win. The Bob Fowler rink from Cornwall, the Blair Jay squad from the Silver Fox, and the Daryl MacDonald team from the Western Community club in Alberton all have one win against two losses, while Charlottetown’s Pat Birtwistle rink are winless in three starts.

The Ford foursome won 9-5 this evening over Rushell MacDonald and her Western team to go to 3-0 in the women’s division. The defending champion Lorianne Davies rink from Cornwall came from behind with 4 points in the final end to pick up their first win, by a 9-7 score, and hand the Gail Greene team from the host club their first loss tonight. Greene is tied with Nola Murphy and her Silver Fox rink for second place with 2-1 records, after Murphy blanked Charlottetown’s Cathy MacDougall team 8-0 tonight. Davies and MacDonald are 1-2, while MacDougall is 0-3.

Tiebreakers, if needed, go Sunday at 10, with the semi-finals between the second and third place teams going that afternoon at 2, and the finals, between the semi winner and the first place team from the round robin, taking place Sunday at 6 pm. In the event that no tiebreakers are required, the semis will move to 10 am and the finals to 2 pm.

The winning rinks will advance to the national The Dominion, November 19-24 at the Scarboro Golf and Country Club in Scarborough Ont.

Cornwall’s Berry finishes Canadian Seniors play with 3-8 record (CCA)

(by Danny Lamoureux)

Despite a few hiccups in the last draw of the round robin at the Canadian Senior Women’s Curling Championship in Abbotsford, BC, the playoff round is set to go this weekend.

Photography by Davina

Cathy King was upset 5-4 by Northern Ontario’s Darla Esch. The North Bay skip scored a well played three in the 9th end to break the game open. King had a chance to tie in the last end but her takeout rolled too far. King finished the round robin at 9-2 tied with Newfoundland & Labrador’s Cathy Cunningham. King had beaten Cunningham in the round robin guaranteeing her a place in Sunday’s championship final.

Cunningham defeated a stubborn Shirley Berry from PEI 8-6 for her ninth win advancing to Saturday’s semi final against Nova Scotia’s Nancy Delahunt. Delahunt finished her round robin with a 6-4 loss to Manitoba denying her the hammer in the semi final as her record is 8-3. The semi final tilt is set for 2:00pm Pacific on Saturday, March 24.

The remaining games had Quebec’s Odette Trudel stun BC’s Penny Shantz 8-6 with steals of one in the 8th and 9th ends to tie the game and then a steal of two in the 10th end.  Quebec had a relatively successful week at 5-6 emerging from the pre-qualifier a week ago Thursday. BC drops to 4-7.

Photography by Davina

The defending senior women’s champion, Heidi Hanlon of the Thistle-St. Andrews in Saint John, finished her week on a high note as she prepares to represent Canada next  month at the world seniors. After starting the event 1-4, she posted 6 consecutive wins, including a 6-5 win over Saskatchewan’s Darlene Gillies, to finish 7-4 and in 4th place one game out of the playoffs.

Joining Quebec at 5-6 are four other teams. Saskatchewan, Manitoba’s Laurie Deprez, Quebec, and Northern Ontario.

PEI finished at 3-8 and the NWT’s Ann McKellar-Gillis at 1-10.

The Canadian Senior Women’s champion will represent Canada at the 2013 World Senior Championships next April at a site to be announced.

After opening day action in the men’s section, defending champion Donald Clarey of Montague and Crapaud’s Alan Inman foursome are 2-0, while the remaining four rinks sit at 0-1. Inman stole a single in the second, and followed up a three point fifth end with a steal of another 3 in the sixth in an 8-2 win over Charlottetown’s Pat Birtwistle in the afternoon, and stole four points in the sixth end on the way to an 8-3 win over Cornwall’s Bob Fowler rink in the evening. Clarey and Inman will face each other in the 6 pm Friday draw.

In the women’s section, Crapaud’s Marie Ford rink, who were runners-up last year to the Lorianne Davies rink from Cornwall in a 9-1 final, beat the defending champions by a 7-1 score in the opening draw, following a fifth end single with a steal of two in the sixth. Ruth Stavert and Gloria Clarke win Maritime Stick Ch’ship!

Stick Curling

The Cornwall Curling Club team of Ruth Stavert and Gloria Clarke captured the women’s division of the Maritime Stick Curling Championship at the Amherst Curling Club on Thursday by defeating the New Brunswick team of Grace Donald and Diane Gallant. Also, in an earlier playoff game they scored a rare 6 ender. As there are only 6 rocks per end in stick curling, that is equivalent to scoring an 8 ender in regular curling. The Stavert-Clarke team also won the championship in 2010. The second PEI team of Audrey Callaghan and Janet Hackett were defeated in their semi-final game.

PEI teams also distinguished themselves in the open/men’s division as the Montague team of Floyd Stewart and Gordon MacDonald were runners-up after being defeated in the final game by the Bennett-Duggan team from Nova Scotia. The two Cornwall teams of Charlie Campbell – Barry Craswell and Sterling Stratton – Ernie Stavert made the playoff round but were defeated in the quarter finals.

The 2013 Maritime Stick Championship will be hosted by the Montague Curling Club in mid-March. Each of the three provinces is represented by 4 open teams and 2 women’s teams for the three day event.

Karen Currie and Bob Fowler rinks win Ladder League third round. Round 4 set.

Round three of the Wednesday night ladder league, sponsored by Cornwall Pizza Delight, wrapped up last night, with round four, sponsored by Clyde River Golf Links, running March 14 through April 11.

Three teams, skipped by Gord Peters, Karen Currie, and Bob MacWilliams, finished with 3-2 win-loss records in the six team A pool, with the Currie rink beating both of the other teams in their round robin encounters, so they will win the round. Peters, who beat MacWilliams in their game, will come second. Two teams will move down the ladder to the B pool for the final round. Three teams had two wins, with the Greg Groves rink losing a game by default, and thus have one point less, so they will be one of the teams. The other two teams were skipped by Paul Neima and Kris Currie, with Neima beating Currie in their game, so Neima will remain in the A pool, while Kris Currie will drop to the B. While MacWilliams will remain in the A pool for the final round, the team is able to play only the first two games in the final round (MacWilliams himself is available to spare after that), so there will be a bye in the last three weeks for the A pool, which will contain eight teams in the final round.

The Bob Fowler rink finished in first place in the B pool, managing to eke out wins in all of their games. The Angus Kennedy rink lost only to Fowler, and are second. The Kelly Watts rink lost only to Kennedy (they didn’t play Fowler), and are in third place. These three teams will move up the ladder to the A pool for the final round, as will the fourth place team. Three teams, skipped by Ray Biagé, Aaron Campbell, and Joerg Soltermann all had two wins. In round robin play, Biagé beat Campbell, and Campbell beat Soltermann, but Soltermann did not play Biagé, so we had to go to total points. Biagé had 30, Campbell had 27, and Soltermann had 32, so Soltermann will be moving up.

Wednesday Daytime and Evening draws this week – notes

Note that the regularly scheduled draw for the Daytime Competitive league will be played this week. Last week’s postponed draw will be moved to the end of the schedule (April 11)

The evening Ladder League draw is the one previously cancelled due to a storm, and the original times will stay. This means that the B pool will play at 6:30, and the A pool will follow at 8:30, same as last week. The B pool will have the first and last late draws in the next draw, which starts next week and runs through April 11.

Please note that there will be one less team for the last round in the Ladder League, as one of them is heading for points south. If there are any other teams who won’t be available for the final draw, which starts next week, please let me know.

Team PEI goes undefeated, and brings home Gold Medal at Special Olympics Winter Games

(SOPEI) Greg St. John, Phillip Chugg, Monique Gauthier, Chris MacPherson and John Anthony Laybolt have been curling together for a number of years.
Four years ago they lost their Provincial playdowns to Summerside and missed the chance to represent PEI at the 2008 National Games in Quebec City.
For most that might be the end. But not the story for the Charlottetown/Cornwall curling team.
“We decided we wanted to be at the next national games in 2012. We had a plan, we worked hard and here we are”, says head coach Dick St. John.
The team practiced at the Charlottetown Curling Club on Wednesdays and played in a league on Sunday nights in Cornwall.
They worked on the foundational curling skills and tactics. They enhanced their team with the help of Sport Psychologist, Tara Costello-Ledwell and they had a ton of fun doing this together as a team.
At the end of day 5 at the 2012 National Winter Games in St. Albert Alberta, the team sat undefeated in the D division with a 3-0 record.
On Saturday afternoon, they played Team Nova Scotia in the gold medal game, winning by a measure with a 6-5 score.
“We were so excited to be heading into the gold medal game with that record. I knew they could do it and I’m so happy their hard work is being rewarded”, said assistant coach Ann Doucette.

Kennedy and Sanderson win Cornwall’s 1st doubles competition

Teams participated in three six end games, scoring points for ends won in our first Doubles Team competition.  Coming in first was the team of Angus Kennedy and Myrna Sanderson, followed by Steven and Karen Montgomery,  with Bob Fowler and Tracy MacDonald coming in third.  Participants thought it was a lot of fun and a great way to sharpen your curling skills.  Off-ice games were provided by Angus Kennedy, and teams enjoyed watching the Scotties in our new lounge area.

Rumours are that there may be another event soon – possibly in conjunction with the Brier

Here are some pictures from the doubles event:

Cornwall’s Sterling Stratton/Ernie Stavert duo take men’s bronze game, Ruth Stavert/Gloria Clarke win women’s title at PEI Stick

Stick Curl PEI

There’s a new winner this year in the men’s division of the Ferguson’s Funeral Homes Provincial Stick Curling Championships, which wrapped up this afternoon at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside, with the Floyd Stewart/Gordon MacDonald duo from the Montague Curling Club edging the three-time defending champion Walter Callaghan/John Vincent twosome from the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton by a 5-4 score in the final. The Montague team trailed 4-3 after four ends, blanked the fifth, and scored a deuce in the final end for the come-from-behind win.

The men’s bronze medal game, between two-time stick champions Sterling Stratton and Ernie Stavert of Cornwall and Alberton’s Peter Larter and Eddy Bernard, was all but over in the first end, with the Stratton rink counting with five of their six stones. Larter scored a single in two, but Stratton blanked the third, and scored a triple in the fourth to end the game early with an 8-1 final score.

The women’s final was decided on Wednesday, with the final round robin draw, scheduled for this morning, not being needed, as the two-time defending champion Ruth Stavert/Gloria Clarke rink from the Cornwall Curling Club had a perfect 5-0 record, while the second-place team of Audrey Callaghan of the Western Community club, and Ann Barwise of the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary were at 3-2 and could not catch up to the winners in the final draw.  The rules specified that a final would be played only if the top two teams were tied.  The other two women’s teams, the Shirley Lank/Mary Plamondon team and the Karen Fisher/Elaine Hughes duo, both from Cornwall, were out of reach of the top two spots, with 1-4 records.

The top four men’s teams — Stewart/MacDonald, Callaghan/Vincent, Stratton/Stavert, and Larter/Bernard, and the top two women’s rinks — Stavert/Clarke and Callaghan/Barwise, all earn the right to compete in the Maritime Stick Curling Championships, March 13-15 at the Amherst Curling Club in Nova Scotia.

The top two men’s teams, Stewart/MacDonald and Callaghan/Vincent, may also compete at the 2012 Canadian Open Stick Curling Championship, April 3-5 at the Highland Curling Club in Regina.

In stick curling there are two curlers per team, who deliver their rocks with delivery sticks, with each team member delivering from opposite ends. Sweeping is allowed only from the hog line to the back of the house at the playing end. Two curlers, one from each team, alternately deliver 6 stones each per end, while their teammate skips that end. The roles are then reversed, and the partners deliver the stones back. No stone may be removed from play until the fourth stone of each end. Games are six ends and take about an hour to play. For more information on stick curling, including complete rules of play, visit www.stickcurling.ca.

Twelve men’s rinks and four women’s teams took part in this event, now in its sixth year.

Men’s semis set at PEI Stick, Cornwall’s Ruth Stavert/Gloria Clarke repeat as Women’s champs

The 10 am Thursday semi-finalists have now been determined for the Ferguson Funeral Homes PEI Stick Curling Championships at the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club in Summerside, with the winners advancing to the championship game, and the losers playing for third and fourth place in the bronze medal game, both at noon.

The three-time defending champion duo of Walter Callaghan and John Vincent from the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton, and the only other team to ever win the men’s event, the Sterling Stratton and Ernie Stavert twosome from the Cornwall Curling Club, who won in 2007 and 2008, finished in first place in their respective pools, both with 4-1 records, and earned byes to tomorrow’s semis, where Stratton/Stavert will take on the Floyd Stewart/Gordon MacDonald team from Montague, and Callaghan/Vincent will play the Peter Larter/Eddie Bernard team duo from Alberton.

In today’s semi-finals between second and third place teams, Stewart/MacDonald (3-3) beat the Charlie Campbell/Barry Craswell (3-3) rink from Cornwall 7-2, and Larter/Bernard (4-2) edged the Bazil and Sterling Higginbotham team (3-3) from Montague by a 3-2 score.

There is one draw remaining, at 10 am Thursday, in the women’s double round robin, but it’s not really required, as the defending champion Ruth Stavert/Gloria Clarke rink from the Cornwall Curling Club have already won the championship, as they currently have a spotless 5-0 record, with the next best team,  Audrey Callaghan of the Western Community club, and Ann Barwise of the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary, at 3-2, set to finish as runners-up. Even if Stavert/Clarke were to lose and Callaghan/Barwise were to win their remaining games, the defending champs would still be ahead, and be declared the winners, as the rules specify that the noon final game would be played only in the event that two teams are tied for first. The other two women’s teams, the Shirley Lank/Mary Plamondon team and the Karen Fisher/Elaine Hughes team, both from Cornwall are currently at 1-4, and cannot catch Callaghan/Barwise for the runner-up spot.

The top four men’s teams and the top two women’s rinks from this competition earn the right to compete in the Maritime Stick Curling Championships, March 13-15 at the Amherst Curling Club in Nova Scotia. The top two men’s teams may also compete at the 2012 Canadian Open Stick Curling Championship, April 3-5 at the Highland Curling Club in Regina.

Cornwall’s Berry wins her fifth Seniors title

Credit Unions

The Cornwall and Charlottetown rink of Shirley Berry, Sandy Hope, Shelley Ebbett and Arleen Harris, with coaches Bill Hope and Butch McGee, had to win both championship round games against the June Moyaert foursome from Montague in order to become the PEI Credit Unions Provincial Senior Women’s champions, and they succeeded, but by the narrowest of margins – taking their Monday game 8-7 in an extra end, and today’s match by one point as well, by a 6-5 score. It’s Berry and Harris’ fifth Seniors championship together, with Hope and Ebbett joining the team for their 2010 win.

Defending champion Moyaert, who won two out of the three triple knockout sections, and consequently would have taken the title had she won either of the two championship round games, got off to a great start today, stealing singles in the first three ends, but Berry came back with a single and a pair of deuces in the next three to lead 5-3. Moyaert tied the game with singles in ends seven and eight, but Berry blanked the ninth to retain last rock advantage coming home, and scored a single in the final frame for the win. Other members of the Moyaert rink are Sherren MacKinnon, Terri Thompson, and Kathy Clarey, with Marj Stewart filling in for MacKinnon after a Friday evening fall on the ice sent her to the sidelines.

The Shirley Berry rink will now join the Senior Men’s winners, the Charlie Wilkinson foursome from Charlottetown, at the Canadian Seniors, March 17-25 in Abbotsford BC.

Eight women’s teams and nine men’s teams took part in this year’s PEI Seniors, with the men’s event taking place at the Crapaud Community Curling Club, and the women’s championship being played at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton.

Cornwall’s Berry forces sudden death game with extra-end win over Moyaert

Seniors

The PEI Credit Unions Provincial Senior Women’s Curling Championship will now be decided with the 2 pm Tuesday draw. Four-time champion Shirley Berry and her Cornwall and Charlottetown rink forced the sudden death final with an 8-7 extra-end win over defending champion June Moyaert of Montague this afternoon at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton. The Montague team, who won two of the three sections in the triple knockout, could have wrapped it up this afternoon, while Berry, who won the A section, has to win both games in the championship round to take the title.

Berry and her rink of Sandy Hope, Shelley Ebbett, and Arleen Harris, with coaches Bill Hope and Butch McGee had a 7-3 lead after seven ends in this afternoon’s game, but Moyaert fought back with a deuce in eight, and stolen singles in nine and ten to tie the game at 7-all and force the extra, where Berry used last rock advantage to score a single for the win. Moyaert’s teammates are Sherren MacKinnon, Terri Thompson and Kathy Clarey, with Marj Campbell filling in for MacKinnon, who fell in the Friday evening draw.

The winners of tomorrow’s game will join the Senior Men’s winners, the Charlie Wilkinson foursome from Charlottetown, at the Canadian Seniors, March 17-25 in Abbotsford BC.

Moyaert edges Cornwall’s Berry to take B final at Seniors. Moyaert beats Rhodenizer, Baglole edges Berry to advance to C final

Credit Unions

Montague’s June Moyaert edged A final winner Shirley Berry of Cornwall and Charlottetown by a 7-6 score in the 11 am draw today to win the B section of the triple knockout Credit Unions of PEI Provincial Senior Women’s Curling Championship at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton. Moyaert, aided greatly by a six-ender, then went on to beat Cornwall’s Debbie Rhodenizer by a 12-8 score in the C semi-finals at 4 pm, while Berry lost to Paula Baglole of Summerside’s Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club, 8-7 in an extra end, in the other semi. Moyaert and Baglole now square off in the C final, Monday at 10 am.

A section winner Berry, B section winner Moyaert, and the C winner will then advance to the two game championship round, Monday at 3 pm and Tuesday at 2 pm. If Moyaert were to win the C flight, she would play in both championship games, and win the title if she took either.

The Senior Women’s champions will join the Senior Men’s winners, the Charlie Wilkinson foursome from Charlottetown, at the Canadian Seniors, March 17-25 in Abbotsford BC.
