Board members needed!

Like any community organization, the Cornwall Curling Club would not be able to function without volunteers.

And as we were reminded at the 40th Anniversary Celebration – the volunteer efforts of a great many Board members past and present have made our Club what it is today.

Current and former Board Members of the Cornwall Curling Club present at the 40th Anniversary Celebration – just a few of the many volunteers over the years!

To continue that strong tradition and pass it down to the next generations, we need to continue to have Club members step up and take a place of leadership on our Board of Directors – serving as the lead volunteers of the Club.

This year we have multiple Board members rotating off the Board and are seeking to find willing volunteers to fill those empty seats.

The Club bylaws state that: The affairs of the Club shall be conducted by the Board of Directors, composed of twelve (12) Directors elected by voting Members.

Any adult member in good standing is eligible to be elected and each director is elected to a three-year term.

The Board typically meets once a month on Sunday mornings at present for 2-3 hours, as well as being involved in communication via email and text occasionally.

They help guide and direct the affairs of the Club and give direction to the Club Manager and Ice Technician as needed.  They help deal with any situations or issues that arise and try to look to the future to help the Club continue to be sustainable and a place for social interaction and curling fun.

While many things are discussed/decided in the general meetings, the Board also has several committees, including:

  • Finance
  • Membership/Draws
  • Publicity
  • Facility
  • Bonspiels/Socials
  • Fundraising/Volunteers
  • Development Director
  • Seniors Committee
  • Nominating Committee
  • Bylaws

Committee assignments are ideally aligned with your interests and strengths as well as filling gaps/needs that exist within the Club and Board.

The Board has a President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer – and the immediate Past President serves on the Board as well.

If you would like more information about serving on the Board or like to put your name forward please reach out to either current President Shauna McGill, Club Manager Travis Jones, or any current Board member.

And we would also like to thank our current Board members for serving!

Shauna McGill – President & Bonspiels/Socials
Debbie Rhodenhizer – Vice-President & Facilities
Kim Nickerson – Secretary & Bylaws
Lisa I – Treasurer & Membership/Draws
Chris MacDougall – Past President & Fundraising
Nelson Dougay – Fundraising
Sharon Campbell – Bonspiels/Socials
Bill McGuire – Publicity & Development Director
Sue Pollard – Volunteers & Nominations
Bryan Sutherland – Daytime Representative

Adopt-A-Rock Sponsorship Program

In 2022, the Board of Directors or the Cornwall Curling Club approved a project to replace our aging curling rocks with a brand-new set of rocks. This is an exciting initiative for our Club which will improve the quality of the curling experience for all our members and guest for years to come! With a project of this magnitude come a significant financial commitment.  In addition to allocating a portion of our Building Fund to this expense, the Board is seeking additional sponsorship from members and other to offset a portion of the cost.

Introducing our Adopt – a – Rock Sponsorship Program

The Cornwall Curling Club is offering members and supporting businesses an opportunity to be part of the legacy of the curling club by sponsoring a rock handle.  As a rock handle sponsor you will have the opportunity to have your name, your family’s name, company name, or memorial message engraved on one or more rock handles.

The cost per rock handle will be $275 which includes the handle, engraving, and delivery or you can adopt a pair of rocks for $500.  We anticipate that these rock handles will remain in use at the Club for the next ten years.

Requests for rock handle sponsorships will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis as there are only 64 rock handles available to be engraved.  We would like to secure all rock sponsorships by May 1st so that the rock handles can be ordered, engraved, and installed over the summer prior to the start of our next curling season.

If you would like to adopt a rock simply fill out the information below and return it to the bar or Club Manager.  If you are not interested in having your name on a rock but would like to support the rock replacement program, please feel free to note that below as well. We thank you for your support of this important initiative.

Red & Blue Spiel/40th Anniversary Wrap Up

The Red & Blue Spiel/40th Anniversary weekend was a resounding success – with over 100 people involved in the curling and even more people attending the Anniversary Banquet.

The Red Team entered the weekend with a lead in the points, but for the second year in a row the Blue Team staged a weekend comeback to retain bragging rights for another year!

Final Standings:
Red Team: 385,000
Blue Team: 427,000

Those scores included not only the weekend games, but Monday’s Junior draw, Tuesday’s Novice draw, Wednesday’s Stick Curling round robin, and Friday’s U18 Learn to Curl draw.

The top five teams were:
1. Blue Team 2 (46,000): Annika Kelly, Barry Craswell, Travis Jones, Chuck Sawatasky, Karen Hardy, and John Dunsford.
2. Red Team 8 (44,000): Danny Kneabone, Angela Sanderson, Elric MacDonald, and Rob Shannon
3. Blue Team 9 (43,000): Joe Callaghan, Lee Nickerson, Nate MacRae, Derek MacEwen, and Clara Jack.
4. Blue Team 6 (40,000): Paul Neima, John Clark, Mike MacDonald, and Melanie Melanson.
5. Blue Team 7 (38,000): Donald Weeks, Norman Boswall, Bruce MacKenzie, Amy Duncan, Yvonne Barbour, and Sam Gagnon.

The Spirit Award went to Red Team 11.

The Banquet was a great experience as well! Once again, Al’s Catering provided a wonderful turkey dinner.

Door prizes, which had been donated by local businesses and Club members, were awarded during the banquet.

Joanne & Paul Durant – Paul was the lucky recipient of two rounds of golf as a door prize!

Speeches and recognition of the 40th Anniversary of the Club were given by Club President Shauna McGill, MLA Mark McLane, MP Heath MacDonald and Judy Herlihy, on behalf of the Town of Cornwall.

Several of the founding members and Board members were in attendance as was a special 40th Anniversary cake!

Club Founders!

The founding members and board of the Club deserve our gratitude for their hard work and dedication in founding the Club.  We also took a picture with every current and former board member in attendance at the event – the founding members got the Club off the ground and they have passed the torch on to successive groups of individuals who have kept it going.

Past and current Board of Directors members present at the banquet.

In addition to curling and the banquet, a great time was had socializing between draws.  One of the best parts of the Red & Blue Spiel is the coming together of so many of our members – many that don’t see each other regularly during the season since they curl on different nights.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

And the wrap up of the Red & Blue and 40th Anniversary wouldn’t be complete without many thanks to all those who helped organize it. Several of our founding members were involved in the planning, as were members of the daytime committee, the board of directors, and other Club members.  In addition we had well over 30 members and businesses donate door prizes.

Shauna McGill & Sharon Campbell lead the Spiel Committee for the Board of Directors and put in countless hours in preparation for these events!

Thank you to everyone who made the spiel and anniversary celebration a success!

Founders credit volunteers, town support as key reasons why Cornwall Curling Club succeeded

40th Anniversary of Cornwall Curling Club being celebrated Saturday during closing banquet

By Bill McGuire
Development, Publicity Chair,
Cornwall Curling Club

To say that the Cornwall Curling Club got off to a bumpy beginning just over 40 years ago is actually very close to the truth.

Rupert Sweetapple was applying the first ever flood on that long-ago Saturday morning when he thought he saw the building shake and things start to move about. He couldn’t believe his eyes.

At 8:53 a.m. on January 9, 1982, the largest earthquake ever recorded in New Brunswick, struck between Newcastle and Plaster Rock. Natural Resources Canada reported it was a magnitude 5.7, the upper end of a medium strength quake, and was felt by people all over New Brunswick.

It was also felt across much of P.E.I. as the new Cornwall club was shaken to its new foundation. The club shook off that rocky start, and although there were ups and downs along the way, the club has thrived and remains a recreational centrepiece for the town.

The earthquake was one of the vivid early memories as three original board members got together earlier this month to recall the beginnings of the club.

Cornwall Curling Club founders, from left, Roy Coffin, Rupert Sweetapple and Ernie Stavert display a commemorative plaque and original group photo when they got together recently to reminisce about the start of the club more than 40 years ago. The club is celebrating its 40th anniversary during a banquet Saturday at 1 p.m. as part of the Red and Blue Closing Bonspiel.

Sweetapple, Roy Coffin and Ernie Stavert were reminiscing about how the idea of a Cornwall Curling Club got started more than 45 years ago, when serious discussions began in 1978 to build a recreational and social centre in the village.

Later this week, the club is holding gala celebrations to mark the 40th anniversary of the first complete curling season in Cornwall.

There is a special Founders’ Commemorative Plaque hanging near the entrance to the ice surface, “honouring the contributions, the hard work and determination of the above group of individuals whose vision led to the foundation of the Cornwall Curling Club. Unveiled at the AGM May 2009.”

The names of the founders include Wylie Barrett, Robert Burns, David Burt, Gary Cameron, Roy Coffin, Don Gorveatt, Gordie Hermann, Bill McLaren, Al MacCormac, Robert Perrin, Ernie Stavert, Rupert Sweetapple and Rodney Walsh.

Many of the surviving founders and original board members will be on hand Saturday at 1 p.m. during special ceremonies celebrating the 40th anniversary. The banquet is being held in conjunction with the annual Red and Blue Closing Bonspiel, which will also include a number of special guests.

There are 15 curlers who were members 40 years ago and who are curling at the club this year. They got together for a photo opportunity earlier this month to help kick off celebrations.

Coffin, the first president of the board of directors in 1980-81, said the municipality has been on board from the start and is a major reason why the club has prospered and been so successful. The other key reason has been the time donated by hundreds of selfless volunteers over the past 40 and more years. Stavert and Sweetapple also served as board presidents, closely following Coffin.

First known as the Cornwall Regional Recreation Association, the organizing group looked for support from numerous outlying areas surrounding the village. The Cornwall Curling Club Inc. was formally established in the fall of 1980.

In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, the nearby Charlottetown, Belvedere and Crapaud curling clubs were all operating successfully, and for Cornwall to embark on building a new club was considered a somewhat perilous decision. But Stavert said a strong core of local curlers thought another club could survive and prosper. He credited Gordon Hermann as the driving force in getting the club off the drawing board and getting shovels in the ground.

Hermann was then a member of the famed Ted MacFadyen foursome out of Crapaud and had attended the Brier with him before spearheading the group dedicated to bringing a curling club to Cornwall.

“We all knew what we were getting into,” said Coffin, meaning the core group was well aware that fundraisers and finding dedicated volunteers were going to be their priorities for many years to come.

The initial plans were to renovate the ground floor of the Cornwall Civic Centre into a clubhouse, and construct a 160 ‘ x 70’ prefabricated steel building attached to the southern side of the facility. While the village was on board from the start, a number of nearby residents were not. Some feared a tax hike to pay for the club, while other residents and nearby churches were not happy about a licensed facility operating in the neighborhood.

Estimated costs ranged from $300,000 to $350,000, and by the time loans and interest were paid, that cost would reach $450,000. It was to be a multipurpose facility capable of holding dances, rentals and banquets. It was a daunting task some 40 years ago for a group of volunteers to take on that financial challenge.

The three founders remember that the earliest major fundraisers were two huge dances at PVI — both sellouts — after the legendary Tremtones were convinced to come out of retirement to play. What followed were more dances, lobster suppers, raffles and draws.

It was somewhat of a miracle that the recreation association could get a loan. Back then, interest rates were over 20 per cent and banks would not touch the loan application from the Cornwall club.

But David Burt, a Cornwall curling founder, was also manager of the Metro Credit Union which came through with a loan after the village backed the application, allowing for a lower interest rate from 21 to 17 per cent.

But even then, it took a $100,000 grant from the federal government to allow the final financial puzzle to fall into place, and for founders and members of the board of directors to pledge upwards of $1,000 each.

“None of us expected to get our money back and none ever did,” laughed Stavert.

Sweetapple recalls working as a bartender without pay and even turning the tips back in. “Every little bit helped.”

Sweetapple was also the first club manager — again without pay. All three original board members were quick to point out that everything back in the early years depended on volunteers. Stavert said no one was paid —  not the ice makers, the manager, bartenders or custodians.

Coincidentally, the club got its curling stones from a club in Cornwall, Ont. The new P.E.I. club was able to purchase almost new rocks for $10,000. But even then, the board had to back the loan. Today, that cost would be approaching $60,000.

The three said there are so many volunteers to thank. After Hermann, they credited Gordie and Shirley Lank for stepping up when things got tough at the club. Other key people over the years included Wendell Sentner, Lance Lowther, Benny Grant, Paul MacDonald, John Berry and Al MacCormac and others too numerous to mention. Longtime corporate supporters included Kenmac, Hyndman and Co., and O’Connor Glass.

“The town deserves a lot of credit,” said Coffin. “When things got tough, the town stepped up to assume more of the operational costs.” Today, there is a close, mutually beneficial relationship between town and club.

Coffin recalled that getting members to renew their memberships sometimes meant a personal call from a board member — a suggestion from Hermann — that has paid dividends over the years.

The upstart Cornwall club was quick to seize whatever opportunity came its way. For example, when the Scotties Tournament of Hearts was held at the Charlottetown Forum in 1984, the legendary Shorty Jenkins was brought in to make and maintain the ice for the women’s national championship. The newly opened Cornwall club sent in volunteers to assist Jenkins who was happy to have their help and he was more than willing to teach them the basics of good ice making which paid dividends at the club over the years.

When membership started to dwindle, the addition of daytime curling in 1998 added scores of new members and changed the whole dynamics in the club, bringing new life, more money and more members. Before 1998, the club largely operated during the evenings and weekends.

The added option of stick curling has offered the opportunity for many curlers to take up the sport and for many seniors to play longer.

The three founders also credited the longtime close co-operation with the Crapaud Community Curling Club in helping Cornwall get started — such as being able to borrow their neighbour’s equipment.

Cornwall made a point of reaching out to the community, and the welcome mat was rolled out to everyone — town residents, farmers, fishermen, firefighters, road builders and service clubs etc. The club promoted itself as a fun place to curl, willing to accommodate whoever came knocking.

More members was a good thing but it came with higher costs said Stavert.

As memberships increased, so did the need to have a full-time, paid manager and ice makers. The work done by volunteers started becoming paid positions or through honorariums. But even today, much of the organizing and work done inside the club is handled by dedicated volunteers.

They also singled out the support from the North River Fire Department which has always been on hand to support the club, supplying a tanker truck to help with the first floods. “It would take a long time with a garden hose,” joked Coffin.

There is still a sand floor after 40 years because of the high capital cost of installing a concrete base. The immediate capital goal for the current board is a rock replacement program which just completed its second year of a five-year timeline.

From its early beginnings with less than 100 members, last season the club had 420 fully paid members and more than 525 regular users — almost full capacity.

While the future looks stable and bright for Cornwall, the recent closure of the historic Charlottetown Curling Club — along with Belvedere’s shutdown — give cause for concern.

“More clubs and more curlers are obviously better for the sport,” said Coffin. “Everyone lost something when Charlottetown closed. It doesn’t do anyone any good to see a club close.”

The three agreed that any new club in the capital area must have a close working relationship with the municipality in order to succeed.

Groves and Callaghan teams win Wed. Ladder League final round

Despite having an undefeated team in each pool going into the final draw night, all teams were out in full force for the exciting conclusion of the Wednesday Evening Ladder League! We are pleased to report that we got a full three-round draw in this year, although one night featured four-end games as two sheets were unavailable due to ice issues.

In the “B” Pool, the previously-undefeated Greg Groves rink came out on the short end of a close and hard-fought battle, with the Doug Callin foursome pulling out the win, although team Groves took the round. Greg didn’t want a picture, as they were running with a couple of spares, so we have honoured his request. Regular team members were Greg, third Donald Weeks, second Cathy MacDougall, and lead Marjorie Matthews.

(L-R): Joe Callaghan, Clara Jack, Amber Robb, Terry MacCormac

Up the ladder in the “A” Pool, there were some very exciting games on the final night, including a game-winning hit through a narrow port for Mark MacDonald, but over on the next sheet, Joe Callaghan and his team stayed undefeated, sweeping their seventh win in a row, aided by a five-ender against the Boswall rink. This gives Callaghan and his squad of Clara Jack, Amber Robb, and Terry MacCormac pool wins in all three draws this year – the “B” pool in round one, and the “A” pool in rounds two and three!

It’s been another great season — hope to see everyone back in the fall!

Cornwall Curling Club’s 40th Anniversary celebrations to join with Red & Blue bonspiel

Shauna McGill, president of the Cornwall Curling Club’s board of directors, and former president Chris MacDougall, go over plans for the club’s 40th anniversary celebrations March 31-April 1. McGill co-chairs the anniversary committee with fellow board member Sharon Campbell. MacDougall, a board member this year, is also on the organizing committee.

CORNWALL – The Cornwall Curling Club is ready to throw a party more than 40 years in the making.

The club is planning a gala celebration to mark its 40th full season of operations during its traditional closing Red and Blue bonspiel March 31-April 1.

The first stones were thrown in Cornwall in late January 1982 after the club launched its tentative inaugural season in the fall of 1981 with a Sunday night curling schedule at the Belvedere Golf and Winter Club because the new club wasn’t quite ready to host operations.

The first full season in Cornwall was 1982-1983. Plans to hold earlier anniversary celebrations were derailed by Covid disruptions.

The 40th anniversary event is open to all Cornwall members, said club president Shauna McGill. More than 400 curlers are playing at the Cornwall club this season and McGill is hoping that many of them will compete in the closing bonspiel or attend the anniversary banquet.

“It’s going to be a big celebration to mark our anniversary season,” said McGill.

The Red and Blue is a single entry event where each team will play three, 6-end games with an entry fee of $40.

The signup sheet is expected to fill quickly and curlers are encouraged to get their name on it early to avoid disappointment, said McGill.

While the bonspiel can accommodate 24 teams and 96 curlers, more than 200 club curlers are expected to participate in the celebrations. Daytime, stick, junior and senior curlers will all be divided into Red or Blue teams with games throughout the closing week or so.

Points accumulate in each category and are added to the results of the Red and Blue teams playing in the closing bonspiel to determine the overall winner. Commercial and Sunday morning drop-in curlers are also eligible to play in the bonspiel.

McGill said the banquet at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 1 will include local dignitaries, original board members, founders and volunteers from 40 years ago. Club curlers unable to play in the 40th anniversary bonspiel are invited to the closing banquet where tickets are available for $20.

McGill and fellow board member Sharon Campbell are co-chairing the 40th anniversary committee.

“We’re hoping for a good splash to close out this milestone season,” said McGill. Awards will be presented at the close of play later Saturday.

“We hope our curlers will participate as much as they can by playing or attending the banquet in support of the club,” said McGill.

“It’s been a great season in Cornwall with no Covid-19 closures or issues.” Things went very smoothly after shutdowns and disruptions the previous three seasons, she added.

For more information about the 40th anniversary celebrations, contact club manager Travis Jones at 902-566-4427 or by email at cornwallcurling@eastlink.ca
