The  Lorianne Davies rink from the Cornwall Curling Club, along with club member Donna Butler,  who curls with the defending champions Kyle Stevenson rink, are among the fourteen entries in this weekend’s  M&M Meat Shops Provincial Mixed Curling Championship, just down the road at the Crapaud Community Curling Club. Playing with Lorianne, who throws third, are fourth stone Rob Young, second Mark MacDonald, and lead Melody Beck.  The Davies foursome were runners-up in this event in 2008. Playing with Butler are skip Kyle Stevenson, second Doug MacGregor, and lead Tricia Affleck.

Play gets underway Thursday at 4.

Complete draw and results at peicurling.com/mixed.

Cornwall’s Veronica Smith team are competing in the M&M Meat Shops 15 and Under championships, which get underway Friday at 1 pm at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton. Other members of the Smith rink are Katie Fullerton, Sabrina Smith, and Chloe McCloskey, with coaches Paul Smith and Sarah Fullerton. Jonathan Schut, who normally plays with Cornwall’s Jeff Taylor team, is playing on the Kyle Hughes rink for this event. Cornwall’s Ruth Stavert/Gloria Clarke win inaugural PEI Women’s Stick title

The defending champion duo of Walter Callaghan and John Vincent from the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton edged the Gordie MacDonald/Floyd Stewart twosome from Montague by a 5-4 score this afternoon to win the men’s and mixed section of the Ferguson Funeral Homes Provincial Stick Curling Championship, at the Crapaud Community Curling Club. Ruth Stavert and Gloria Clarke from Cornwall got by the Shirley Lank/Ruth Walsh pair from Cornwall and Crapaud by a 7-5 score to win the women’s section, a new addition this year. In the men’s and mixed consolation game, Edwin Walker and Clifford Picketts from Summerside’s Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club beat Grant Laird and Vernon Chowan from Cornwall by a 5-2 score. The winners and runners-up earn the right to compete in the 2010 Canadian Stick Curling Championship, April 9-11 at the Fort Garry Curling Club in Winnipeg.

It took two extra ends for Callaghan/Vincent to get by Leard/Chowan by a 5-4 score in one men’s and mixed semi-final, while MacDonald/Stewart blanked Walker/Picketts 7-0 in the other. Stavert/Clarke beat the Audrey Callaghan/Gail Jenkins team from Alberton and Charlottetown 7-2 in the women’s semi.

In stick curling there are two curlers per team, who deliver their rocks with delivery sticks, with each team member delivering from opposite ends. Sweeping is allowed only from the hog line to the back of the house at the playing end. Two curlers, one from each team, alternately deliver 6 stones each per end, while their teammate skips that end. The roles are then reversed, and the partners deliver the stones back. All games are six ends.

Eleven men’s and mixed teams, and five women’s rinks took part in this fourth annual PEI stick curling championship.

The combined Cornwall/Charlottetown rink of Shirley Berry, Sandy Hope, Shelley Ebbett, and Arleen Harris, with coach Butch McGee, beat the Karen MacDonald foursome from the Charlottetown Curling Club by a 9-1 score this morning to win the Credit Unions of PEI Senior Women’s Curling Championship at the Charlottetown Curling Club. As Berry had won two of the three sections of the triple knockout draw, she could win the championship by taking either Monday game, and she did with the first one, following a triple in the second end with a stolen deuce, and four consecutive stolen singles. Playing with runner-up MacDonald were Paula Creamer, Kay Atkinson, and Karen Hardy.

On the men’s side, Peter MacDonald and his Charlottetown Curling Club team had also won two triple-knockout sections, and also won with the first championship game, against defending champion Mel Bernard of Summerside’s Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club, by a 7-5 score.
MacDonald opened with a deuce in end one. Bernard blanked the second, and took a single point in the third end. MacDonald recorded a deuce in end four, and Bernard settled for a single in five to give MacDonald a 4-2 lead at half time. Bernard stole a deuce in the sixth end. MacDonald took one in the seventh, and stole another in the eighth. Bernard took one in the ninth, giving MacDonald a 6-5 lead and last rock advantage in the final end, where he picked up a single for the win. Other members of the winning MacDonald rink are Peter Gallant, Rod MacDonald, and Doug MacGregor, with Blair Jay, Douglas Simmons, and Earle Proude rounding out the runner-up Bernard foursome.

The winning Shirley Berry and Peter MacDonald rinks will now advance to the Canadian Seniors, March 19-28 at the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club.

Eleven men’s and seven women’s teams took part in the PEI Seniors championships, for curlers age 50 and over.

Carol wins, Roddie doesn’t, in PEI Masters finals

The Clair Sweet rink from the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary beat the Roddie MacLean foursome from the Cornwall Curling Club twice today to win the men’s section, while Carol Sweetapple beat Cornwall clubmate Diane MacKay in the final  to win the women’s division at  The Medicine Shoppe PEI Masters Curling Championships, for curlers age 60 and over, at the Crapaud Community Curling Club.

Sweet, with teammates Bob Matheson, Cliff Poirier, and Wayne Arsenault, handed the MacLean rink their first loss of the tournament this morning, with an exciting come-from-behind  8-7 extra-end decision in the “B” final of this double-knockout event. Sweet trailed 7-3 after five ends, but took a single in the sixth, and stole a single, a deuce, to tie the game, and another single in the extra end for the win. The two teams met again in the championship game, with Sweet taking four points in the first end, stealing a pair in the second,  taking another four in the sixth, and stealing another four-pointer in the seventh for a 14-4 victory. Both winner Sweet and runner-up MacLean will advance to the Maritime Masters, February 14-17 at the Beaver curling club in Moncton. Sweet can also compete in the Canadian Masters, March 28-April 4 in Saint John. Other members of the MacLean rink are Ron Giggey, Edgar Coffin, and George Younker. Eleven men’s teams took part in the PEI Masters.

In the four team women’s section, Diane MacKay of Cornwall eliminated six-time defending champion Jeanne Duffenais from the Silver Fox in the “B” final this morning, with an 8-4 win, taking a triple in the third, and stealing a deuce and a single in the final two ends. Val MacLean, Eileen Blanchard, and Marilyn Diamond round out the MacKay team.

MacKay then met “A” division winner and clubmate Carol Sweetapple in the final. MacKay grabbed an early lead, stealing  a deuce in the first end, and a single in the second. Sweetapple, playing with Marie MacDonald, Danielle Girard, and Karen Fisher, tied the game with a triple in the third, and stole the next two ends for a 5-3 lead. The teams both picked up a deuce and a single over the next four ends, for a final score of 8-6 for Sweetapple. Both rinks will advance to  the Maritime Masters, February 14-17 at the Beaver curling club in Moncton, with the winning Sweetapple team also earning the right to compete in the Canadian Masters, March 28-April 4 in Saint John.

Cornwall’s Roddie MacLean, Carol Sweetapple advance to Masters finals

The Roddie MacLean and Carol Sweetapple teams from the Cornwall Curling Club have earned byes to tomorrow’s finals in the men’s and women’s divisions respectively of The Medicine Shoppe Provincial Masters Curling Championships, for curlers age 60 and over, being played at the Crapaud Community Curling Club.

In the eleven team men’s section, MacLean, with teammates Ron Giggey, Edgar Coffin, and George Younker, scored four points in the final end this morning to beat Lou Nowlan of Summerside, a five-time Masters champion, by a 9-6 score in the “A” section final of this double-knockout event. MacLean then beat Bob Acorn of Charlottetown by a 7-3 score to advance to the B section final, 10 am on Thursday. In that game, he’ll be playing Clair Sweet of O’Leary’s Maple Leaf club, who edged Louis Walsh of the Silver Fox 6-5 in an extra end this morning, and doubled Nowlan 6-3 this afternoon.

If Sweet wins the B final, he’ll face MacLean again in the 2 pm championship final. If MacLean is the winner, the final will not be necessary, and his team will be declared the champion. Playing with Sweet are Bob Matheson, Cliff Poirier, and Wayne Arsenault.

In the four team women’s division, Carol Sweetapple got by Cornwall clubmate Ruth Stavert by a 6-4 score to win this morning’s “A” final, but did not advance to the B final, losing this afternoon to six-time defending champion Jeanne Duffenais of the Silver Fox by a 7-1 score. Rounding out the Sweetapple rink are Marie MacDonald, Danielle Girard, and Karen Fisher.

In the other qualifier game for the B final, Stavert lost out to another Cornwall clubmate, Diane MacKay, by a 9-3 score. MacKay scored five points in the fifth end en route to the win. So it’s Duffenais vs MacKay in the B final, Thursday morning at 10. The winner of that game will then play Sweetapple in the 2 pm final. Other members of the Duffenais rink are Georgie Coulson, Marg Nowlan, and Pat Barrett, while Val MacLean, Eileen Blanchard, and Marilyn Diamond complete the MacKay foursome.

Men’s and women’s winners and runners-up advance to the Maritime Masters Championships, February 14-17 at the Beaver Curling Club in Moncton.  Winners may also participate in the Canadian Masters, March 28-April 4 in Saint John.

Cornwall business owner gives $1,500 to curling club for defibrillator (Guardian)

DAVE STEWART
The Guardian

A Cornwall business owner is donating $1,500 towards the cost of an automated external defibrillator (AED) for the Cornwall Curling Club.
Ralph Manning, who operates a physiotherapy business in the town, read a story in The Guardian last Thursday about a Charlottetown man suffering a heart attack on one of the ice sheets Monday night.

Club buys Defibrillator, with aid of generous donors

Last Monday evening at the beginning of the early draw, one of our members, Paul Horne, was beset by what appears to be a severe heart attack. We understand Paul’s condition is serious and our hopes and prayers are with him and his family at this time. We wish to thank all those who took an active role in the response to this emergency and in particular we thank Krista Affleck whose active and prompt participation in CPR until paramedics arrived, was probably crucial in saving his life.

As a result of this incident and a recent similar one at the APM Center, the subject of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) quickly surfaced as a necessity at our club. The subject was “fast tracked” and management quickly looked at various options for the purchase of one. The club’s Seniors offered to pay for approximately one half the costs. As a result of an article in the Guardian, Cornwall Physiotherapy & Sports Rehabilitation, owned by Ralph Manning, generously offered to donate $1500 towards the purchase of the unit. Unanimous Board approval was obtained and it is my pleasure to announce that the unit has already been purchased and will be installed at the club shortly.

It is important to note that training in the use of the AED and in CPR is required. Staff will be trained in its use and a training session has already been booked for Sunday  February 21st at 1 pm, the earliest convenient date available. The training of volunteers in the use of the AED will be required to complement the staff however, we are not certain how many can be accommodated. This will depend on the number of persons and costs, etc. Please register your name with Bev if you are interested in participating in this course. Thank you.

Fullerton, Gallant end play at Canadian Juniors

(PEICA/CCA) The hope that the Brett Gallant rink would repeat as Canadian junior curling champions was dashed this afternoon, as they lost an 8-3 battle to Ontario (Jake Walker of Kitchener), as the two teams fought it out for the third and final playoff spot, entering the match with 8-3 records.

Manitoba (Alex Forrest of Manitoba) had already clinched a berth in Sunday’s final at 8:30 pm Atlantic, live on TSN, finishing with a 10-2 mark. Saskatchewan (Braeden Moskowy of Regina) earned a berth in Saturday evening’s semi-final at 8:30 pm Atlantic after defeating Manitoba this morning, 7-4, completing the round robin with a 9-3 record.

On the women’s side, PEI’s Sarah Fullerton rink, already out of contention, lost to 12-3 to undefeated Rachel Homan of Ottawa, finishing tied for 6th place with Manitoba with a 6-6 win-loss record. Northern Ontario finished second at 9-3, with Sask. ,  BC, and Alberta tied for the final spot at 8-4. That will necessitate two tiebreakers, one at 10:30 am and one at 3:30 pm AT on Saturday, meaning the women’s semi-final would go at the same time as the men’s on Saturday night…8:30 pm.

Cornwall Curling Club thinking ‘seriously’ about buying defibrillator

DAVE STEWART

The Guardian

The president of the Cornwall Curling Club says the volunteer board is giving serious thought to purchasing an automated external defibrillator after a Charlottetown man suffered a heart attack at the club Monday night.
“It’s definitely on the agenda,” John De Luca said Wednesday. “We’re talking to people. We might even try to fast-track it. We’re talking seriously about it.”
A Charlottetown man, said to be in his late 50s, suffered a heart attack on one of the ice sheets Monday around 7 p.m.
Benny Grant, former fire chief with the North River fire department, said firefighters arrived on the scene within minutes. Grant credits those at the club with helping save the man’s life.
“There was a lady at the time when we got there who was performing CPR on him,” Grant said. “We got there with our defibrillator and we were going to put the paddles on him when the ambulance came along. It took a little while. They shocked him a couple of times. After a while he came to and started breathing on his own.”
A similar incident occurred recently when Gordon Crozier of Cornwall suffered a heart attack at the APM Centre. That facility has a defibrillator which was used after the man went into full cardiac arrest. Crozier’s family has publicly thanked Communities 13 Inc. management, which runs the APM Centre, for purchasing a defibrillator.
“I think it’s a good idea,” said Grant. “It’s a cheap piece of equipment to have around. You may never use it but at least it would be there.”
Grant says he knows the man who suffered the heart attack on Monday night at the curling club.
“He’s not out of the woods yet. He’s got a ways to go yet. It’ll take time. Doctors don’t like to call it a massive heart attack. They call it a significant heart attack.”
Defibrillators cost approximately $2,500. A cost-sharing program with the Department of Health and Wellness gives rinks $1,000 to put towards the purchase. Anyone interested in buying one can do it by submitting an application to Recreation P.E.I.
De Luca says the incidents at the APM Centre and curling club also draws attention to another important fact — the need for people to get CPR training.
“The first people who treated him had just taken courses on CPR and knew what to do and that was really critical. I think a lot more people should be taking those courses.”
The curling club president said that doesn’t take away from the importance of having automated external defibrillators on scene in the event something happens.
“We are serious about it, it is on the agenda and we are looking at putting it on the fast track. The (curling) season ends by the end of March. We don’t know whether we’ll have one before that time but we’re looking at even that possibility.”

How to operate AED:

— Regardless of which brand of AED is used, the only knowledge required to operate it is to press the “ON” button.
— Once the AED is turned on, it actually speaks to you in a computer-generated voice that guides you through the rest of the procedure.
— You will be prompted to place a set of adhesive electrode pads on the victim’s bare chest and, if necessary, to plug in the pads’ connector to the AED.
— The AED will then begin to automatically analyse the person’s ECG rhythm to determine if a shock is required. It is critical that no contact be made with the person while the machine is analysing the ECG. If the person is touched or disturbed, the ECG may not be accurate.
— If the machine determines that a shock is indicated, it will automatically charge itself and tell you when to press the button that will deliver the shock.
— Once the shock is delivered you will be prompted to resume CPR.

Fullerton rink 2-2 at Cdn. Jrs. after loss to BC in final two ends

Ontario women, Saskatchewan men lead at the Juniors

SOREL-TRACY, January 17 (CCA)…Ontario (Rachel Homan of Ottawa) is the only unbeaten women’s team at the 2010 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, while Saskatchewan (Braeden Moskowy of Regina) tops the men’s standings after two days of play at Colisée Cardin and Club de curling Aurèle-Racine.

Ontario had a bye Sunday evening but leads its 12 rivals with a 3-0 mark.  Northern Ontario and Saskatchewan are at 3-1, while Manitoba, British Columbia and Alberta are deadlocked with 2-1 records.

In Draw 6 results Sunday evening, Saskatchewan (Trish Paulsen of Saskatoon) beat up on Northwest Territories (Amanda Moizis of Hay River), 13-3; Alberta (Nadine Chyz of Calgary) proved a 6-3 winner over Nova Scotia (Tara LeGay of Bridgewater); British Columbia (Dailene Sivertson of Victoria) stole one in the ninth and four in the 10th end for a 9-5 shocker over Prince Edward Island (Sarah Fullerton of Cornwall) and Northern Ontario (Kendra Lilly of Sudbury) had no trouble with New Brunswick (Jessica Daigle of Saint John), 9-2.

On the men’s side, three teams have yet to taste defeat – Saskatchewan at 4-0, followed by idle Manitoba  (Alex Forrest of Winnipeg) and Ontario (Jake Walker of Kitchener) at 3-0.  New Brunswick is next at 3-1.

Saskatchewan’s Moskowy roared back from a 6-2 fifth end deficit to trim Northwest Territories (Colin Miller of Yellowknife), 8-6.   New Brunswick (Josh Barry of Rothesay) fell from the unbeaten ranks, losing to Northern Ontario (Christian Tolusso of Thunder Bay), 9-6.  Nova Scotia (Scott Garnett of Halifax) stole one in the 11th end after taking two in the 10th to hand Alberta (Brendan Bottcher of Edmonton) its first loss as well.

In the other game, Prince Edward Island (Brett Gallant of Charlottetown) set a Juniors
record of 42 career wins (round robin and playoffs) as a skip, defeating British Columbia (Tyler Klymchuk of Langley), 7-4, eclipsing the 41 game-won mark held by Quebec’s Martin Crête.  Gallant, the defending Canadian champion, is also making a record-tying sixth Juniors appearance, equalling Brad Gushue of St. John’s.

The victory moved Prince Edward Island to 2-2, tied for sixth with Nova Scotia.

Round robin play continues through Friday, after which the first place teams will advance directly to Sunday’s finals, live on TSN.  The second and third place teams will meet in semi-finals on Saturday.

The two winners will then represent Canada at the 2010 World Juniors in Flims, Switzerland.

Fullerton beats Manitoba to go to 2-1, Gallant loses to drop to 1-2 at Juniors

SOREL-TRACY, January 17 (CCA)…Manitoba’s Alex Forrest of Winnipeg won a big one this afternoon, an 8-7 extra end squeaker over defending Canadian champion Brett Gallant of Charlottetown in Draw 5 action at Colisée Cardin.

Not only did the victory keep the Deer Lodge Curling Club team undefeated, but its 3-0 record is good enough for a share of top spot at the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, along with New Brunswick, Ontario and idle Saskatchewan (Braeden Moskowy of Regina).

The win also denied Gallant another chance to set a record for career wins as skip at the Juniors.  He’s currently tied with Quebec’s Martin Crête, at 41 wins, in his record-tying sixth appearance.

Down 5-3 at the fifth end break, Manitoba took deuces in the sixth and ninth ends to go up 7-6, before Prince Edward Island, which dropped to 1-2, forced the extra with a single in the 10th.    Gallant  was in a position to steal in the 11th end before Forrest cleared out his opponent’s counter with his first rock.

“We had a tough start but we fought back and never gave up,” explained Forrest, making his national debut.  “I made sure, knowing how the ice was, that I was tight with my first one (in the extra end) to at least hit something to our benefit.

“I lost the (provincial) final playing third two years ago.  Last year, we didn’t do so great.  This is half a new team.  We’ve just clicked pretty good all year, having a real good year.  We’re off to a good start, no complaints right now.”

In other men’s results, New Brunswick (Josh Barry of Rothesay) doubled up on Quebec (Kevin Rivest of Montreal), 6-3; Ontario (Jake Walker of Kitchener) disposed of Yukon (Thomas Scoffin of Whitehorse), 6-2  and Nova Scotia (Scott Garnett of Halifax) edged Newfoundland and Labrador (Kelly Schuh of St. John’s), 6-5, in winning its first game.

On the women’s side, Manitoba (Breanne Meakin of Winnipeg) fell from the unbeaten ranks, losing to Prince Edward Island (Sarah Fullerton of Cornwall), 11-4.  That leaves Ontario (Rachel Homan of Ottawa) as the only undefeated team at 3-0, after a tough 9-5 battle with Yukon (Sarah Koltun of Whitehorse).

With the loss, Manitoba dropped to 2-1, tied with four others for second place: New Brunswick, Saskatchewan (Trish Paulsen of Saskatoon), Prince Edward Island and Northern Ontario (Kendra Lilly of Sudbury).

New Brunswick (Jessica Daigle of Saint John) edged Quebec (Camille-Marie Lapierre of Otterburn Park), 5-4, while Newfoundland and Labrador (Jen Cunningham of St. John’s) also won its first, 9-2 over Nova Scotia (Tara LeGay of Bridgewater).

Play continues with Draw 6 tonight at 8:00 pm  Atlantic at both Colisée Cardin and Club de curling Aurèle-Racine. PEI men and women are  playing BC in this draw.

Fullerton, Gallant split Juniors openers

Ontario leads women; New Brunswick, Ontario and Saskatchewan top men after Day 1 at Juniors

SOREL-TRACY, January 16 (CCA)…Ontario’s Rachel Homan admits that she has some unfinished business at this year’s M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, which got underway Saturday at Colisée Cardin and Club de Curling Aurèle-Racine.

Last year in Salmon Arm, British Columbia, her Ottawa Curling Club team finished first after the round robin with a 10-2 mark, but lost the national final to Manitoba’s Kaitlyn Lawes, 7-4.

This year, she’s returned with two of last year’s teammates, third Emma Miskew and lead Lynn Kreviazuk, but has a new second, Laura Crocker, replacing over-age Alison Kreviazuk.

The pre-tournament favourite is off to a perfect start, a 2-0 mark, after a 13-2 pasting of Newfoundland and Labrador (Jen Cunningham) in Saturday evening’s third draw, good enough for sole possession of first place.   Ontario won its first game earlier in the afternoon, defeating Northern Ontario, 9-4.

“We’re playing well,” said the 20-year-old Homan.  “The ice changed, it was a bit different for the two draws. so it’s challenging, but it’s the same for both teams.

“Yes, we definitely have (some unfinished business).  We’re happy to be back.  Last year wasn’t a good experience (losing the final)  but we’re looking forward to this one. We’ll see how far we can take this.

Homan has been touted for the last few years as a rising star in curling and her team has certainly held its own on the women’s tour.  They also competed in the pre-Trials competition last November in Prince George, when trying to qualify for the Tim Hortons Canadian Curling Trials in Edmonton in December.

They made it to the C semi-finals, but lost to Marie-France Larouche and were eliminated.

“When we can play in the top 12 in Canada for a spot in the Trials, we’re doing something right.  It was a really good experience, especially playing in an arena.  The more you can play on arena ice, the better.   So hopefully  we can carry that along at the nationals and maybe more.”

Right behind Ontario, all with 1-0 records, are British Columbia (Dailene Sivertson of Victoria), Manitoba (Breanne Meakin of Winnipeg) and Quebec (Camille-Marie Lapierre of Otterburn Park), all of whom were idle Saturday night.

In other women’s games in draw two,  New Brunswick (Jessica Daigle of Saint John) was a 10-5 winner over Prince Edward Island (Sarah Fullerton of Cornwall), while Saskatchewan (Trish Paulsen of Saskatoon) whipped Nova Scotia (Tara LeGay of Bridgewater), 8-2.

In the women’s opening draw, Northern Ontario (Kendra Lilly of Sudbury) defeated Saskatchewan (Trish Paulsen of Saskatoon), 6-3, with steals of one in the eighth end and two in the 10th, Nova Scotia (Tara LeGay of Bridgewater) also stole her way to an 8-6 win over New Brunswick (Jessica Daigle of Saint John), swiping singles in the ninth and 10th ends, while Prince Edward Island (Sarah Fullerton of Cornwall) handled Newfoundland and Labrador (Jen Cunningham of St. John’s), 7-4.

In men’s play, Prince Edward Island’s Brett Gallant, the defending Canadian champion, missed a chance to enter the record books when he lost to New Brunswick (Josh Barry of Rothesay), 10-4.  Gallant currently has 41 career wins as a skip, knotted with Quebec’s Martin Crête, in his record-tying sixth appearance at the Juniors.  With the loss, Prince Edward Island dropped to 1-1.

The result put New Brunswick into a tie for top spot at 2-0 with two others –  Ontario (Jake Walker of Kitchener), which defeated Newfoundland and Labrador (Kelly Schuh of St. John’s), 7-4 and Saskatchewan (Braeden Moskowy of Regina), an 11-8 winner over Nova Scotia (Scott Garnett of Halifax), after stealing two in the ninth and 10th ends.

Alberta (Brendan Bottcher of Edmonton), Manitoba (Alex Forrest of Winnipeg) and Quebec (Kevin Rivest of Montreal) are at 1-0 after evening byes.

In his opening draw, defending men’s champion Prince Edward Island, skipped by Brett Gallant of Charlottetown, got off to a good start, beating Newfoundland and Labrador (Kelly Schuh of St. John’s), 8-4.

Gallant won last year’s championship in Salmon Arm, British Columbia before earning a silver medal at the World Juniors in Vancouver.

The 19-year-old is making a record-tying sixth appearance at the Juniors, equalling Brad Gushue’s mark, and with this victory, tied Quebec’s Martin Crête for most number of career wins as skip, now at 41.

In other men’s draw one action, Saskatchewan (Braeden Moskowy of Regina) bested Northern Ontario (Christian Tolusso of Thunder Bay), 6-3, while New Brunswick (Josh Barry of Rothesay) edged neighbour Nova Scotia (Scott Garnett of Halifax), 5-4.

Round robin play continues on Sunday through Thursday, with draws at 11:00 am, 3:30 pm and 8:00 pm AST.

After Friday’s final two round robin draws at 9:00 am and 1:30 pm, the first place teams advance to their respective finals, while the second and third place teams meet in semi-finals on Saturday, following any required tiebreakers.

The finals take place Sunday, January 24, live on TSN, at Colisée Cardin.

Fullerton rink taking simple strategy to nationals (Journal)

P.E.I. women taking simple strategy to nationals
JASON SIMMONDS
The Journal Pioneer

CHARLOTTETOWN – Coach Brenda MacMillan has a simple strategy for the P.E.I. women’s entry at the 2010 M&M Meat Shops Canadian junior curling championships.
“The No. 1 goal is we want to go and have fun, but we also want to try and do well,” said MacMillan. “If we finish in the top half we will be happy.
“If it’s more than that, it will be icing on the cake for us.”
Skip Sarah Fullerton, 18, third stone Michelle McQuaid, 18, second stone Sara MacRae, 18, and lead Whitney Young, 19, of the Cornwall Curling Club will be competing in their first national junior championship in Sorel-Tracy, Que.
The rink earned P.E.I.’s berth by defeating the Anita Casey rink from the Charlottetown Curling Club rink 9-2 in the provincial final in O’Leary.
“The girls right now are pretty excited,” said MacMillan.
Familiarity is not an issue with the Fullerton foursome. MacMillan, who started coaching the rink last season, added Fullerton, McQuaid and McRae have curled together for approximately nine years.
The Fullerton rink, which also represented P.E.I. at the 2005 Canada Winter Games, won last year’s Atlantic 18-and-under championship in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Thus, this rink does have some big-game experience and enters the nationals enjoying a very successful year.
“We’ve really done well so far this season on the cashspiel circuit,” noted MacMillan.
They won in Summerside, Cornwall and finished second in Sackville, N.B. MacMillan said the rink curled well in the Charlottetown Super League as well.
“The biggest turning point for this team was Halloween weekend,” she said. “We went to Ottawa to the big OVCA Superspiel, a major junior cashspiel up there and there’s teams from the States and sometimes teams from Europe come over.”
Overall, the rink went 1-4.
“They felt it gave them the edge to work harder to win the provincial (championship),” said MacMillan.
As is the key in any round-robin format, MacMillan agrees a good start is important.
“We’d like to win our first couple of games and get us rolling,” she said. “But I told the girls to take it one rock and one end at a time.
“Don’t look at it that after 10 ends I want to be the winner. If something happens that the rock doesn’t do what you want it to do, go on to the next one. Don’t dwell on it.”

(Those who played together in a mixed event in the current or previous year are eligible to play together in this event)

3 – Each team will be allowed a maximum of 2 players between the ages of 15 and 20, as of December 31st of the year prior to the Canadian championship. Curlers under the age of 15 are not eligible to compete.

Team must advise event coordinator (Ray Biagé) of any roster changes prior to game.

5 – Curlers from the former Intermediate championship and the Stick curling championship, and from championships not conducted by the PEICA, may compete, regardless of placement in those events, and provided that all team members belong to the same curling club.

Entries must conform to the official eligibility rules for the provincial and national events:

Dominion Rules
We trust that all participants will respect the intent of this championship.  The event is formulated for true club curlers, not elite, past or present.  We want to support ordinary curlers and the development of curlers across Canada.  As we set our eligibility and on-ice rules, including the CCA Rules of Curling for General Play, keep this objective in mind.  The Dominion reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to exclude any team that violates this spirit and intent.

1.                  The curling club represented by the team must be affiliated with its Provincial / Territory Association.

2.                  Each club will declare a women’s team and a men’s team of four players that played together, regularly, in a sanctioned club league in the most recent season, excluding major/super leagues, to represent the club as the men’s and women’s club champions.  How the club declares this team is up to the individual club.

3.                  Each team will be allowed one player who has played in a Men’s, Women’s or Seniors provincial event in the current or previous year, or participated in a Grand Slam event in the current or previous year. *

4.                  All games will be eight (8) ends with ties being decided by a full extra end.

5.                  A maximum of 2 replacement players from the club can play any position except skip, but cannot play in any position than the position being filled.

6.                  Each team will be allowed a maximum of 2 players under the age of 20, as of December 31st of the year prior to the championship (minimum age of 19 as of December 31st). **

*Provinces/Territories with open provincials/territories will be permitted 1 player who has placed top 4 in a Men’s, Women’s or Seniors provincial/territory event in the current or previous year, or participated in a Grand Slam in the current of previous year.

**Individual curling associations may adopt a more restrictive criteria, if they choose.

Butler loses C final. Carmody vs Dewar for Scotties title

The Charlottetown Curling Club’s Erin Carmody foursome will play the Tammy Dewar rink from the host Montague Curling Club in the two game championship round, Tuesday at 2 and 7 pm, as the Scotties Tournament of Heart Provincial Women’s Curling Championship wraps up in Montague.

Carmody took the C title in the triple knockout competition tonight, beating Cornwall’s Donna Butler rink by a 7-5 score. As Carmody also won the A section, she has a big advantage in the championship round, as, by winning two sections, she will take the championship if she wins either game, while Dewar, who won only the B section, must win both to take the title.

In tonight’s game, Butler was ahead 4-2 after stealing a deuce in the seventh end, but Carmody took four points in the eighth. The teams traded singles in the last ends, to give Carmody the win by a two point margin.

Other members of the Carmody rink are third Geri-Lynn Ramsay, Kathy O’Rourke, who throws second stone, but calls the game, and lead Trisha Affleck.

The Butler rink includes Carolyn Coulson, Melissa Andrews, Lori Brine, and fifth player Leita Chisholm, along with coach Kathie Gallant. The Dewar team includes June Moyaert at third, Darlene London at second stone, and Gail Greene in the lead position. Moyaert was on the Jennifer Ramsay rink, the last team from Montague to win the women’s championship, in 1988.

The PEI Scotties winning team will advance to the national Scotties, January 30 to February 7 in Sault Ste. Marie Ont.
