Cornwall’s Butler rink advances to 7 pm C final at Scotties

It’s down to three teams and a maximum of three games at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts Provincial Women’s Curling Championships in Montague. This afternoon, A final winner Erin Carmody from the Charlottetown Curling Club eliminated five-time PEI women’s champion Suzanne Birt in an 8-7 decision, while Cornwall’s Donna Butler rink beat the host Montague Curling Club’s Tammy Dewar team, winners of the B final, by a  7-4 score. Butler and Carmody now face off in the C final of this triple-knockout event, set for 7 pm.

Butler, with teammates Carolyn Coulson, Melissa Andrews, Lori Brine, and fifth player Leita Chisholm and coach Kathie Gallant, got off to an early start in her game, picking up a triple in the first end, and stealing a single in the second. Dewar narrowed the gap to 5-3 after eight, but Butler took a deuce in the ninth, and ran the hometown favorites out of rocks in the final frame.  Carmody and Birt were tied at three at the half,  but Carmody took a deuce in the sixth, and a triple in the eighth to build up an 8-4 lead.  Birt fought back with a deuce in the ninth, but a steal of one in the tenth left her one short of the tie.

The winners of all three finals will then advance to the championship round, Tuesday at 2 and 7 pm. If Carmody wins this evening, she will have a big advantage, as, by winning two of the three finals, she will play in both Tuesday games, and win the title in she takes either. If Butler wins, she will play Dewar in the 2 pm game, with the winner facing Carmody in the 7 pm match.

The PEI Scotties winning team will advance to the national Scotties, January 30 to February 7 in Sault Ste. Marie Ont.

Cornwall’s Fullerton rink win Pepsi Jr. Ch’ship!

Sarah Fullerton rink

The Sarah Fullerton foursome from the Cornwall Curling Club won their first Pepsi Provincial Junior Women’s Championship this evening at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary with a 9-2 victory over the Anita Casey team from the Charlottetown Curling Club. Fullerton, and her rink of Michelle McQuaid, Sara MacRae, and Whitney Young, with coach Brenda MacMillan, had won two of the three sections in the triple knockout draw, giving them the ability to take the Juniors title by winning either of the two championship round games, but only the first was needed. Fullerton, with hammer, scored a single in the first end. Casey blanked the second and took a single point in the third end. Fullerton pulled ahead with a deuce in the fourth, and built up a sizable lead with a stolen triple and single in the next two ends. Casey, and her rink of Abby Burgess, Hillary Thompson, and Jessica van Ouwerkerk, with coach Jeff Wilson, picked up a single point in the seventh, but shook hands after Fullerton recorded another deuce in the eighth end.

The winning Fullerton rink, who were the PEI Canada Games representatives in 2007, and won three of the last four provincial 17 and Under championships, will join the Brett Gallant foursome, who won their fifth consecutive Junior Men’s title earlier on Monday, at the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, January 16-24 in Sorel-Tracy Quebec, where the Gallant rink will be looking to defend their Canadian title.

Gallant makes it 5 in a row, Fullerton vs Casey in Pepsi Jr. Women’s

The Brett Gallant rink from the Charlottetown Curling Club, which includes third Adam Casey, second Anson Carmody, and lead stone Alex MacFadyen, with coaches Kathie and Peter Gallant, have won their fifth consecutive Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championship, with a 9-1 victory over the Matthew MacLean foursome from the host Maple Leaf curling club.
Gallant beat MacLean in the A, B and C finals of this triple-knockout event, making the two game championship round unnecessary.

In the C final, Gallant followed up a triple in the opening end by stealing a single in the second, and a deuce in the third. MacLean got on the board with a single in the fourth, but a Gallant triple in the fifth brought the game to a speedy conclusion.

Other members of the runner-up MacLean foursome are Marshall Smallman, Kevin Gallant, and Alan MacLean, with coaches Glen MacLean and Shannon Smallman.

The Gallant rink will now look to defend their Canadian title at the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, January 16-24 in Sorel-Tracy Quebec. They were also silver-medallists at the World Juniors last season. Jamie Danbrook played lead on the Gallant team last year, but long-time lead MacFadyen returned to the Island and the team this season. Gallant, skipping a different team, also won the provincial title in 2004.

Meanwhile, Anita Casey and her Charlottetown Curling Club rink shaded Amanda MacLean from the host O’Leary club by a 5-4 score in the Junior Women’s C final. Casey now faces Cornwall’s Sarah Fullerton rink in the two game championship round. Fullerton won both the A and B sections, and will take the title if she wins either game, while Casey would have to win both games. The championship games go at 6 pm and, if needed,  Tuesday at 3 pm. Playing with Fullerton are Michelle McQuaid, Sara MacRae, and Whitney Young, with coach Brenda MacMillan, while Abby Burgess, Hillary Thompson, and Jessica van Ouwerkerk, with coach Jeff Wilson complete the Casey rink.

Fullerton, Gallant both one win away from Pepsi Junior titles

After Sunday play in the triple-knockout Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championships at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary, the Brett Gallant rink are in the driver’s seat on their journey to their fifth consecutive junior men’s title, winning the B section, and advancing to the C finals. As they won the A section on Saturday, a win in any of their next three games – the C final, or the two championship round games, will give them another trip to the M&M Canadian Juniors, where they are the defending champions, and last year’s World silver medallists.

On Sunday, Gallant, and teammates Adam Casey, Anson Carmody, and Alex MacFadyen, with coaches Kathie and Peter Gallant, defeated the Matthew MacLean rink from the host club by a 9-2 score in the B final, scoring two four-enders in the process. The A final on Saturday was also against MacLean, with Gallant winning by an 11-2 score, aided by a six-ender. Gallant then recorded an 8-6 win over Charlottetown clubmate Spencer Pitre to advance to the C final, Monday at 1 pm against MacLean, who edged Maple Leaf clubmate Parker Clements by a 5-4 score to advance.  Should Gallant win the C final, he will take the championship without the two game playoff round, scheduled for Monday at 6 pm, and Tuesday at 3 pm.  Should MacLean win, he would also have to win both championship games,  to take the title, while Gallant would repeat as champ if he won either.

In the Junior Women’s section, Cornwall’s Sarah Fullerton rink won the B section, doubling Charlottetown’s Anita Casey rink 8-4, aided by a stolen ninth-end deuce. Fullerton, with teammates Michelle McQuaid, Sara MacRae, and Whitney Young, and coach Brenda MacMillan, had won the A final on Saturday, 6-5 over Amanda MacLean of the host Maple Leaf Club.

Fullerton did not advance to the C final, after suffering her first loss, by an 8-4 score, to MacLean, who will now face Casey in that game, Monday at 1 pm. Casey advanced with a 9-8 win over Tiffany Sweet of the Maple Leaf. The championship round games go Monday at 6 pm, and, if necessary, Tuesday at 3  pm.

Since Fullerton won two sections, she will play in both championship games against the C winner, and take her first Junior championship if she wins either, while the C winner would have to win both.

The winning  junior men’s and women’s rinks will advance to the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Championships, January 16-24 in Sorel-Tracy Quebec.

Fullerton advances to B finals

The second of the three section finals will be decided on Sunday at the Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championships at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary.

The Sarah Fullerton rink from Cornwall, who won the junior women’s A section, will play the Anita Casey foursome from the Charlottetown Curling Club at 10 am on Sunday, while the men’s A winner, four-time defending champion Brett Gallant, will again face Matthew MacLean from the host club, in the 1 pm Sunday B final.

In the B section playdowns, Gallant took a five-ender in his 10-2 victory over Sam Ramsay’s combined Charlottetown/Silver Fox team, while MacLean doubled Spencer Pitre and his Charlottetown rink by a 4- 2 score.  Fullerton also recorded a 10-2 victory, over Tiffany Sweet of O’Leary. while Casey beat A section runner-up Amanda MacLean of the host club by a 6-3 score.

The C finals go Monday at 1 pm. If a team wins A, B, and C sections, they will win the juniors title without the two game championship round. If a team wins two sections, they will play in both championship games, and win the championship if they take either game. Otherwise, the B and C winners will square off, with the winner playing the A section winner in the final game. The championship round, if needed, goes Monday at 6 pm, and Tuesday at 3 pm.

The  junior men’s and women’s champs will advance to the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Championships, January 16-24 in Sorel-Tracy Quebec.

Fullerton, Gallant, win A finals at Pepsi Juniors

The Brett Gallant rink from Charlottetown, and Cornwall’s Sarah Fullerton foursome have won their respective “A” section finals at the triple-knockout Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championships at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary.  This advances them to the two-game championship round. Should either team win all three sections, they would win their championship without the need for the playoff round. Should a team win two of the three sections, they would play in both championship games, and win the title should they take either game.

The Gallant team, who are reigning Canadian champions and World Silver Medallists, and are looking for their 5th straight PEI Juniors title, took six points in the eighth end in an 11-2 victory over Matthew MacLean of the host club, while MacLean’s sister Amanda lost a close 6-5 decision to Fullerton.

Other members of the Gallant rink are Adam Casey, Anson Carmody, and Alex MacFadyen, with coaches Kathie and Peter Gallant. Rounding out the Fullerton team are Michelle McQuaid, Sarah MacRae, and Whitney Young, with coach Brenda MacMillan.

Cornwall council split over timing on Civic Centre (CBC)

Cornwall town council is split over how soon renovations should begin on its aging civic centre.

About $2 million has already been set aside for improvements to the 40-year-old building through the Build Canada Fund, but council recently decided behind closed doors to wait a little longer.

Mayor Patrick MacFadyen said it would likely be the spring of 2011 before construction begins.

That doesn’t sit well with Coun. Irene Dawson. She believes the renovations should start as soon as possible.

CIVIC CENTER RENOVATION PROJECT

Dear Sir:

We thank you for the very informative meeting of last Thursday, November 10th, 2009, in which you addressed many of our concerns.  We are pleased with your reassurance that the project, albeit delayed, was still in the planning.  Whilst a delay is not our first choice, we do appreciate the need for a thorough planning process and we look forward to participating in it in the near future.  There is a sense that our membership is okay with a slight delay but, as requested at the meeting, a written confirmation of the project timing will be appreciated.  Also, as mentioned to you at the meeting, the Curling Club has no confidence in the “Ice Plant” and is particularly anxious that it be renewed prior to next season.

As indicated to you at this meeting, a petition was circulating at the time and it was decided to attach it herewith for your attention. Approximately 150 persons have signed this petition representing Club members and citizens of the Town of Cornwall. They will remain forceful in wanting to maintain this project on track. Thank you for your consideration.

Yours truly,

Cornwall and Ch’town to welcome The Dominion Curling Club Championship

The Dominion announcement

Photo (L-R): Shirley Lank (President, PEI Curling Association), Leigh Armstrong (The Dominion),  Susan McInnis (local organizer)

Leigh Armstrong of The Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company was in Charlottetown today to officially announce that the City of Charlottetown and the Town of Cornwall will co-host The Dominion Curling Club Championship, Canada’s first-ever national championship for club curlers, from November 23-28 2010 at the Charlottetown and Cornwall curling clubs.

This will be the event’s second year, following last month’s inaugural competition in Toronto, which welcomed twenty-eight men’s and women’s teams representing each of the country’s provinces and territories, along with a guest list that included World Champion curler Glenn Howard and 1998 Olympic silver medallist Mike Harris. The 2010 event will continue the format over four days of tournament play, followed by playoffs to declare new men’s and women’s Canadian Champions.

All profits from The Dominion Curling Club Championship go to the Canadian Paraplegic Association, and to curling initiatives in communities across the country. On hand for the announcement were Charlottetown Deputy Mayor Stu MacFadyen, Wayne Long, City Events Development Officer, Tourism Charlottetown President Doug Newson, and Suellen Clow of Tourism Charlottetown, along with Susan McInnis of local “The Dominion” representatives Peake and McInnis Insurance, who will be coordinating the event on PEI, and Shirley Lank, President of the PEI Curling Association. Also in attendance were members of the 2009 PEI teams at The Dominion, the Vanessa Hamming and Louis Walsh rinks, and Cornwall Curling Club President John Deluca.

While on PEI, Armstrong will be touring the two clubs, and finalizing the event details.

The 2010  ”The Dominion” provincial championship will take place March 18-21 in Cornwall.

Defending junior men’s champ Brett Gallant will be looking for his fifth consecutive title, and his sixth overall. Gallant, who also won the Canadian championship and the world silver medal last season,  is back with long-time teammates Adam Casey, Anson Carmody, and Alex MacFadyen. Other contenders include host club favourites Parker Clements, and Matthew MacLean, winner of the 15 and Under championships last year, and a participant in the recent PEI Canada Games Trials. Also in the running are Shawn and Spencer Pitre, from the Alberton area, with Spencer skipping a team out of the Charlottetown Curling Club, and Shawn skipping a team from the Western Community club.  Summerside’s Sam Ramsay, last year’s runner-up, is back with a combined Charlottetown/Silver Fox team. Last year’s runner-up, Anita Casey, is back, with a new team out of the Charlottetown Curling Club, including former New Brunswicker Abby Burgess at third, Hillary Thompson of Charlottetown at second, and Jessica van Ouwerkerk, who was formerly with the Carmody rink, at lead stone. Cornwall’s Sarah Fullerton rink, three time 17 and Under champs, are entered, along with last year’s PEI women’s representatives at the CIS/CCA university championships, the Sarah Clow rink, also from Cornwall.  The Tricia Sanderson rink rounds out the Cornwall entries. The host Maple Leaf club has two teams entered on the Junior Women’s side, including the Amanda MacLean rink, PEI’s 2011 Canada Games women’s curling representives, along with the Tiffany Sweet team.

End-by-end results will be available at peicurling.com/juniors

If the same team sweeps all three sections of the triple-knockout draw, they would win the championship, and the  two championship round draws in their section would not be needed.

The winning junior men’s and women’s rinks will advance to the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Championships, January 16-24 in Sorel-Tracy Quebec.

The MacLean rink, which includes third Kassinda Bulger, second stone Emily Gray, and lead Aleya Quilty, with coaches Glen MacLean and Shelley Gray, followed a single in the first end with a stolen deuce in the second. Smith responded with singles in ends three and four, but MacLean came back with a pair in the fifth, for a 5-2 lead. The teams traded singles in six and seven, and MacLean ran Smith out of rocks in the eighth.

MacLean finished double round robin play in first place, with a 5-1 win-loss record, and advanced to the final against Smith, who ended round robin play in second place at 4-2. Jenny MacLean of Summerside finished at 2-4, while Leah Deveau from Montague ended play at 1-4. In the final round robin draw on Sunday morning, Smith doubled Jenny McLean 6-3, and MacLean beat Deveau 7-4. Other members of the runner-up Smith team are Katie  Fullerton, Sabrina Smith, and Chloe McCloskey, with coaches Sarah Fullerton and Paul Smith.

In the Junior Men’s section, the Cornwall rink skipped by 11 year old Tyler Smith, with third Parker O’Connor, second Noah O’Connor, and lead Tyson Smith, with coach Kevin Smith, defeated their clubmates, the Jeff Taylor team, by an 8-4 score in this afternoon’s tiebreaker between the first and second place teams, earning a bye to the Junior Men’s final, Monday at 1:30 pm. Matthew MacLean of O’Leary beat Tony Nabuurs of Montague 8-3 in the tiebreaker between the third and fourth place teams. MacLean now plays Taylor at 9 am Monday, with the winner facing Smith in the final.

The tiebreaker rounds were needed because all four junior men’s teams finished the double round robin with identical 3-3 win-loss records, and PEI Curling Association rules dictate that a team cannot be eliminated from the championship round solely on round robin results. Draw to the button results were then used to rank the teams for the tiebreaker round, with Taylor awarded first place, followed by Smith at second, MacLean at third, and Nabuurs ranked in fourth position.

Summerside’s Bernard rink win Senior Mixed

The defending champion Mel Bernard rink from the host Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club stole a single in the first end, and a deuce in the second to grab an early lead, and went on to defeat Montague’s Donald Clarey foursome by a 7-3 score to win the fourth annual Provincial Senior Mixed Curling Championships this afternoon. Bernard, with teammates Jeanne Duffenais, Earle Proude, and Paula Baglole, advanced to the championship game by winning this morning’s semi-final against clubmate and last year’s runner-up Blair Jay, also from the Fox, by a 5-4 score. Clarey, Bernard, and Jay all finished round robin play with 3-1 records, but the draw to the button results gave first place, and the bye to the final to Clarey. Other members of the runner-up Clarey foursome are Kathy Clarey, Ross Petrie, and June Moyaert, while Lana Fraser, Douglas Simmons, and Debbie MacMurdo round out the third place Jay team.

Finishing out of the playoff round were the Harry Williams rink of Summerside, with a 1-3 win-loss record, and Cornwall’s John DeLuca team, who did not manage to pick up a win.

Cornwall’s Veronica Smith playing in Final, Jeff Taylor, Tyler Smith in tiebreakers at Canada Games Trials

The final got underway at 2 pm in the Junior Women’s section of the Canada Games Trials, at the Charlottetown Curling Club. The Amanda MacLean rink from the Maple Leaf club in O’Leary finished double round robin play in first place, with a 5-1 win-loss record, and advanced to the final against the second place Veronica Smith rink from Cornwall, who ended round robin play at 4-2. Jenny MacLean of Summerside finished at 2-4, while Leah Deveau from Montague ended play at 1-4. In the final round robin draw on Sunday morning, Smith doubled Jenny McLean 6-3, and Amanda MacLean beat Deveau 7-4.

Two tiebreaker rounds are needed before the finals in the Junior Men’s section, with all four teams finishing the double round robin with identical 3-3 win-loss records. Draw to the button results were used to rank the teams coming out of the round robin, with Jeff Taylor of Cornwall awarded first place, followed by his clubmate Tyler Smith at second. Third went to Matthew MacLean of O’Leary, with Tony Nabuurs of Montague ranked fourth.

As PEI Curling Association rules dictate that a team cannot be eliminated from the championship round solely on round robin results, a tiebreaker round is necessary. First and second-ranked teams Taylor and Smith will play off at 2 pm, as will third and fourth-ranked teams MacLean and Nabuurs. The winner of the 1 vs 2 game will advance directly to the 1:30 pm Monday final, with the loser of the 3 vs 4 game eliminated from further play, and the winner facing the loser of the 1 vs 2 game Monday at 9 am. The winner of that game will play the 1 vs 2 winner in the 1:30 pm Monday final.

The winners of the Trials will advance to the Canada Games, February 11-27, 2011 in Halifax, at the Mayflower Curling Club.

New clubhouse on hold until 2011 (Guardian)

CORNWALL
WAYNE THIBODEAU
The Guardian
(http://www.theguardian.pe.ca/index.cfm?sid=310025&sc=98)

Construction of a new curling club here will not happen until 2011 at the earliest.

During a closed-door meeting, the Town of Cornwall decided to hire a project manager to help with the design of the new Cornwall Civic Centre.
Mayor Patrick MacFadyen says council decided it didn’t want to rush the project.
“We had a lot of questions on what should be built and decided for a project of this size that is this important to the community, we should hire a professional to help with the planning and design,” said MacFadyen.
The town hasn’t decided whether it is going to build a new building to renovate the existing 40-year-old building.
During a public meeting in October, the majority in attendance said they wanted a new building.
Build Canada is providing the town with $2-million in funding. The mayor said during the public meeting that would only cover a portion of the total costs.
The project needs to be completed by 2014.
MacFadyen hopes to break ground in about 18 months, which pushes the project back to the spring of 2011.
The town is in the midst of phase two of the new sports fields at Eliot River School. This project includes a baseball and softball field as well as basketball, tennis, volleyball courts, and a tobogganing hill.
That project is expected to be completed in July 2010.
While it’s green light go on the sports field, the new curling club will have to wait.
“We had to make a decision on whether to rush the project through to try and have it started this summer, but council decided it is better to take our time and do it right. This building will be there for many years.”

Ont. wins The Dominion. Cornwall to host next provincial, co-host next national

The Ontario men’s and women’s teams were the winners of this afternoon’s finals of  The Dominion National Curling Club Championships, Canada’s first-ever national championship for club curlers, played at the St. George’s Golf and Country Club in Toronto.

The women’s final against Manitoba went to two extra ends, with the 9th end being blanked, and Ontario winning 6-5  with a stolen single in the 1oth. The men’s championship game also went to an extra, where Ontario recorded a triple, for a 7-4 win.

The men’s team, skipped by Robert Stafford, are from the Chatham Granite club, while the women’s rink, with skip Kelly Cochrane, are from the High Park Curling Club, in Toronto.

In the final round robin draw on Saturday, PEI’s women’s team, from the Crapaud Community Curling Club, spoiled Newfoundland and Labrador’s chance to advance to a tiebreaker round, with the Newfoundland team  stealing a single in the eighth to force an extra end. With Newfoundland lying shot rock in the back four-foot with a guard at the top of the twelve, the ninth end came down to a final shot from PEI skip Vanessa Hamming. Her weight was dead-on s her rock came to a stop right on the button, winning the game for PEI, and eliminating the need for a tiebreaker.

The PEI women ended play with a 2-4 win-loss record, while the men’s team, skipped by Louis Walsh of the Silver Fox, were winless in six starts.

The next national The Dominion will be held on PEI, Nov. 23-28 2010 at the Charlottetown and Cornwall curling clubs, with the PEI playdowns taking place March 18-21 2010 in Cornwall.

Plant running – ice still nice!

Our ice plant is up and running again, and head icemaker Lance Lowther reports that the ice remains in great shape, despite the plant being down in very mild weather. The plant’s condenser failed, and had to be replaced with a temporary one until a new one can be obtained. The Cornwall Curling Club would like to thank Lowther Refrigeration for the excellent emergency service they provided!

Pizza Delight/Hojo Jr. Bonspiel starts this afternoon

Ten junior women’s teams and eight junior men’s rinks, from Newfoundland, New Brunswick, and PEI are entered in the event, PEI’s longest running junior cashspiel. Pizza Delight/Howard Johnson Dutch Inn Junior Cashspiel here this weekend

The 14th Annual Pizza Delight/Howard Johnson Dutch Inn Junior Cashspiel, gets underway Friday afternoon, and wraps up Sunday at the Cornwall Curling Club. Ten junior women’s teams and eight junior men’s rinks, from Newfoundland, New Brunswick, and PEI are entered in the event, PEI’s longest running junior cashspiel. There are no teams from Nova Scotia this year, as their junior regional playdowns are the same weekend.

Organizer Brenda MacMillan says the event’s longevity is partly due to good sponsors over the years, including Neil MacDonald of Pizza Delight, and Rekis Stutvoet of the Dutch Inn. She says they are planning a much larger event next year, for the 15th anniversary. That event will go a few weeks earlier, November 5-7, due to contention with the national The Dominion Curling Club championship being co-hosted at the Cornwall club.

Island entrants this year include seven of the eight PEI Canada Games Trials contenders — Amanda MacLean, Jenny McLean, Veronica Smith, Leah Deveau, Matthew MacLean, Tyler Smith, and Jeff Taylor, along with the host club’s Sarah Fullerton rink, winners of the recent Fall Fling junior cashspiel in Summerside, and the runner-up Anita Casey team from the Silver Fox. The Pitre brothers, Spencer and Shawn, are also skipping teams in the event. Last year’s PEI junior men’s runner-up team, skipped by Sam Ramsay of Summerside, will also be in attendance, along with last year’s UPEI women’s representatives at the CIS Curling Championships, the Sarah Clow rink. The Alex Matters foursome from the Charlottetown Curling Club round out the PEI contingent.

New Brunswick’s Jon Rennie, who was on the New Brunswick Junior Men’s championship team last year, is here skipping a new team. Other New Brunswick teams are skipped by Sarah Ronalds and Jessica Daigle. Representing Newfound.and Labrador will be the Amanda Rumboldt foursome from Stephenville.

Both the junior men’s and junior women’s divisions will play round robin draws with two pools, beginning Friday afternoon at 4 pm, and wrapping up Saturday evening. Semi-finals go Sunday morning at 8:30, with the consolation finals at 11 am on two ice sheets, and the event finals starting an hour later on the other two sheets.

Boy were we lucky…

For those of you who were following the saga of our chiller failure and subsequent repair at the start of the season, the experience of another club shows that we were VERY lucky.

On Monday, November 16th the Bridgetown Nova Scotia Curling Club suffered a catastrophic ice plant failure: the chiller had rusted out, and as a result they lost their ice and their season. Due to Department of Labour regulations, major repairs are not allowed because of  the age of the ice plant. As a result, their entire plant needs to be replaced and brought up to current building codes at a significant cost.  They are currently accepting donations, and pursuing ACOA and other grants, and their members have been taken in at other clubs for the season.

Cornwall’s young Tyler Smith rink made it 3 for 3 this afternoon – all three Cornwall teams entered in the Canada Games Pre-Trials at the Silver Fox have made it through to the Trials, Dec. 11-14 in Charlottetown! (By way of comparison, none of the four teams from Charlottetown made it through).

Smith, who is 11 years old, stole two points in the 5th end on the way to a 7-4 victory over Charlottetown’s Alex Matters rink this afternoon. Other members of the Smith foursome are Parker O’Connor, Noah O’Connor, and Tyson Smith, with coach Kevin Smith. The Dominion goes this week in Toronto; Cornwall to co-host next year’s event

The Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company (The Dominion) has announced that the Charlottetown and Cornwall curling clubs will host The Dominion Curling Club Championship, running from November 23-28, 2010. This will be the second year for the event, set to benefit Canadian club curlers and charities when it premiers this week in Toronto, Ontario.

Play begins Wednesday morning at the inaugural  The Dominion national curling club championship, to be played at the St. George’s Golf and Country Club in Toronto. PEI is represented by the women’s team of Vanessa Hamming, Ruth Walsh, Lindsay Moore, and Heather MacRae from the Crapaud Community Curling Club, and the men’s team of Louis Walsh, Doug Waugh, Walter Benson, and Ray Thompson from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside.

Funded by The Dominion, The Dominion Curling Club Championship is an annual event for men’s and women’s curling teams who have won their local club championships. The premiere Championship provides the first ever opportunity for winning club teams from across all of Canada’s provinces and territories to represent their club at the zone, provincial or territory level, and ultimately to rank nationally. Details can be found online at thedominioncurls.ca.

The Charlottetown Curling Club is a five-sheet club situated directly in Prince Edward Island’s capital. The Cornwall Curling Club is a four-sheet club located in nearby Cornwall, PEI. Together they offer a variety of programs for curlers of all ages. Once again in 2010, The Dominion Curling Club Championship will direct any profit generated to charities, including the Canadian Paraplegic Association (CPA) and developmental curling initiatives in communities across Canada.

“As our premier event approaches” says Leigh Armstrong of The Dominion, “it’s exciting to look forward to 2010 and the opportunity to work with these two exceptional clubs.”

Cornwall’s Jeff Taylor, Veronica Smith teams advance to Canada Games Trials, Tyler Smith still in hunt

After Sunday play at the PEI Canada Games Curling Pre-Trials at Summerside’s Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club, all but one of the qualifiers for the Trials, December 11-14 in Charlottetown, have been determined. Cornwall’s Jeff Taylor and Veronica Smith teams have both made it, and the Tyler Smith foursome are in contention for the final junior men’s spot.

In the six team round robin Junior Men’s section, three teams finished with identical 3-2 win-loss records and grabbed the first three qualifying spots. These teams are the Tony Nabuurs rink from Montague, Cornwall’s Jeff Taylor foursome, and the Matthew MacLean team from the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary. In Sunday’s final round robin draw, Taylor and his team beat their Cornwall clubmates, skipped by 11 year old Tyler Smith, by a 6-2 score. MacLean defeated Alex Matters of Charlottetown 5-2, stealing a deuce in the final end.

Nabuurs was already qualified going into Sunday play, with a 3-1 record, and lost his Sunday contest 7-5 to the Shawn Pitre
team from the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton. This resulted in three teams having identical 2-3 round robin
records, forcing two tiebreaker rounds, as PEI Curling Association rules dictate that no team may be eliminated solely on
win-loss records. The Matters and Pitre rinks squared off in the first tiebreaker on Sunday afternoon, with Matters
eliminating Pitre with an 8-3 win. Matters now plays Cornwall’s Smith in the second tiebreaker, Monday at 2 pm, with the
winner advancing to the Trials in Charlottetown.

All four qualifiers have been determined in the eight team triple-knockout junior women’s section. The Amanda MacLean rink
from O’Leary’s Maple Leaf Club went undefeated in the competition, grabbing the first qualifying spot for the Trials by
doubling the Jenny McLean foursome from the host Silver Fox club by a 6-3 score on Saturday. McLean went on to win the
second qualifier, 7-5 over Leah Deveau of Montague, on Sunday morning. Going into her final shot, McLean was
facing two Deveau counters, one of which was touching the button. She made a clutch draw to the button, aided greatly by
her sweepers, outcounting the opposing rock by a small margin to pick up the win.

The final two qualifiers were decided in the 2 pm draw on Sunday, with Cornwall’s Veronica Smith rink beating the Kim
Dunbar foursome from Charlottetown by a 7-2 score. The final qualifying spot went to Montague’s Deveau, who came back from her earlier loss to McLean with a decisive 9-3 victory over Emily Keen of Charlottetown.

The eventual winners of the Selection Trials in Charlottetown next month will advance to the Canada Games, February 11-27, 2011 in Halifax, at the Mayflower Curling Club.

Here are the Qualifying Teams (skip to lead, coach-Club). Photos will follow later.

Amanda MacLean rink 1st qualifer at Canada Games pre-Trials, tiebreakers loom for jr. men

Two days of play are complete at the PEI Canada Games curling pre-Trials at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside. Four teams from both the junior women’s and junior men’s divisions will advance to the Trials Dec. 11-14 at the Charlottetown Curling Club. The Amanda MacLean rink from the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary was the first team to qualify for the Trials, doubling the Jenny McLean foursome from the host Silver Fox club by a 6-3 score Saturday morning in the A section of the eight team triple-knockout junior women’s event.  Other members of the Amanda MacLean rink are Kassinda Bulger, Emily Gray, and Aleya Quilty, with coaches Glen MacLean and Shelley Gray.

The Jenny McLean foursome get another chance to qualify, in the 10 am draw on Sunday, when they face Montague’s Leah Deveau foursome in the B division final. The Deveau team beat Cornwall’s Veronica Smith rink by a 6-3 score Saturday afternoon to advance to the qualifer game.

There will be two qualifiers from the C division, with the Smith rink playing the Kim Dunbar foursome from Charlottetown, and Charlottetown’s Emily Keen team facing the loser of the B qualifier between McLean and Deveau. These games go at 2 pm Sunday.

Keen dropped to the C division by losing 8-5 to  Smith  on Saturday morning, and then had a bye to the qualifer game, as Fallon Arsenault of Summerside had dropped out of the event due to illness. Dunbar edged Charlottetown clubmate Megan Davies by an 8-7 score to advance to her C qualifier.

In the six team round robin junior men’s section,  the Tony Nabuurs rink from Montague are assured of qualifying for the trials, as, with just one round robin draw left, they are the only team with three wins. Playing with Nabuurs are Kyle Hughes, Taylor McInnis, and Chandler Matheson, with coach Arny Nabuurs.  There are four teams at 2-2, with Jeff Taylor playing Cornwall clubmate Tyler Smith, and Alex Matters of Charlottetown taking on Matthew MacLean of O’Leary’s Maple Leaf club at 10 am Sunday. The winners of these two games are also assured of qualifying spots. Nabuurs takes on Shawn Pitre of Alberton’s Western Community Club in the other game. Pitre is at 1-3. Tiebreakers will be required for the final spot, as at least two teams will have 2-3 records, and PEICA rules dictate that no team may be eliminated solely on win-loss records. If Pitre loses against Nabuurs tomorrow, there will be one tiebreaker round, at 2 pm. If he wins, he will also have a 2-3 record, necessitating a second tiebreaker round, Monday at 2 pm.

The eventual winner of the Trials in Charlottetown will advance to the Canada Games, February 11-27 in Halifax.
