Cornwall Daytime Curlers fight it out in the “Battle of the Sexes”!

Well, what a day!!!
The women and the men fought it out during our ‘Battle of the Sexes’ event today here at the club…and there was way too much fun happening!!

Plenty of smiles, hollers, boooos, and an abundance of quick wit took place while throwing curling shots and between games!

Margaret

A big thank you to Margaret Stewart for reviving this really exciting event so every curler could have a great time today! Thank you Margaret for picking up goodies from a local business to serve, and helping in the kitchen. (Thank you for a bigger psychology counselling session bill for KB …and now LF!)

And while we missed a photo of our Daytime Committee Chair Paul Durant, he was also instrumental in leading this fantastic event! Paul is always involved in so many parts of our operation and we are grateful for his volunteerism and leadership! And apparently, this talented man can curl …and takes no prisoners on the ice!

Margaret (back) and Joanne

Thank you to the lovely and witty Joanne Durant for helping serve our goodies that were purchased. To Al MacCormac for making sure that the winners had somewhere to buy the drinks, and to Brent Irving for taking good care of the ice for us!

There was no cost for participants for this event and the Daytime Committee generously provided a lovely spread of muffins, fruit, coffee and tea for everyone.

We did not get enough photos today as we were having …WAY…TOO…MUCH….FUN!

We have the most beautiful and heartwarming community here at 29 Cornwall Road ~ and we are so grateful to be able to safely participate in this awesome sport… with good friends by our side.

Our Manager is currently at home with hot water bottles and a glass of wine…. and she sends a genuine thank you to all for a heartwarming day~ especially to her awesome Skip and team! #newcurler

Watch out for this event next year… It will be bigger than ever no doubt!!

(Oh… and the men won. Barely.)

Upstreet Craft Brewing Tuesday Evening Competitive League wraps up for the season!

Wellll….we did it!
The 2020-21 curling season has now come to end for our Upstreet Craft Brewing Tuesday Evening Competitive League!
And it was awesome!

This league hosted eighteen teams and some of the best curlers the island has to offer ~ and as a result there was some incredible curling!

A very BIG thank you to our League Draw Master Bill Hope!
Thank you Bill, genuinely, for the time you have spent planning and organizing this league, especially during these unusual times. Your time and contributions to our Club and community is so appreciated!

The foundation of our club is incredible volunteers who step up and take on projects, events, and leagues… so we all can enjoy the wonderful benefits of sport. Now more than ever, recreation enriches our lives by supporting physical and metal health opportunities~ and creating community connections that matter.
This could not be possible without our supportive volunteers.

All other evening leagues still have one (in some cases two) more games left , and so our season is not over yet here at the Cornwall Curling Club!

Stay tuned for the results of our Upstreet Brewing Tuesday Evening Competitive League in the days to come!

Blue continues to lead after Fun/Exciting Saturday Jr. Skills Competition followed by game with special guests!

The afternoon here at 29 Cornwall Road on Saturday was just as exciting as the morning during our ‘Red and Blue~Junior Division’ year-end event!

We enjoyed a skills competition hosted by Curl PEI, lead by Executive Director Amy Duncan and her volunteers…followed by another draw of some really exciting curling!!

We cannot tell you how proud we were of our junior curlers~ who cheered each other on as they curled on mixed teams. Many of these curlers had never curled together before of course, and they all settled in very quickly to display incredible sportsmanship and teamwork!

There were many smiles, both on and off the ice, and it left us with no doubt that a good time had by all! A total of 25 junior curlers participating!

Meaghan Hughes from Team Birt getting ready to sweep!

Some new special guest curlers (13 total)  joined us in the afternoon, all of who have represented the Province of Prince Edward Island in National Championship events like the Brier, Scotties, Masters, and the Everest Curling Club and Seniors Championships!

Our special guest curlers were, without doubt, incredible mentors!! Always making sure that our young junior curlers were the stars of the show!  And we should note, that these experienced and seasoned curlers made notice that this was not all hard to do!!

All of these elite curlers commented how sincerely, impressed they were with the quality of curling they witnessed today from our Club Juniors!

Today, and every day, we feel our club represents the most incredible and heartwarming reflection of community. Our ‘Red and Blue~Junior Division’ event today exemplified such. We were a group of curlers who represented our club and our curling community is such an upstanding measure!

Grace Myers with Peter Gallant

A special thank you to Amy Duncan and Curl PEI for enhancing our event with the ‘Hit, Tap, and Draw’ Skills Competition….there were some great shots made! Thank you to the volunteers for this Skills event, with a special thanks to elite curling Coach Peter Gallant, who provided noted praise and encouragement to our juniors!

Jennifer Lenentine and Ben Kirby

Congratulations to junior curler Ben Kirby, who won our ‘Spirit Award’! Ben had some great signs that represented his Team Blue…but he also stepped in to Curl and fill in on some teams where we really needed him! Ben was gifted an incredible backpack filled with curling swag donated generously by PEI Scotties past Champion Shelly Bradley! (Who could not attend today and sent her regrets).

Sam’s pizza, courtesy of Peake and McInnis Ltd. Insurance

We cannot say enough about the incredible swag provided today from our special guest curlers !! Our juniors won brooms, and jerseys, and hats and toques, and pins … and so much more! They also enjoyed a delicious pizza lunch kindly donated by multiple PEI Scotties Champion Susan McInnis and Peake and McInnis and prepared by our friends at Sam’s Family Restaurant!

Easter dessert!

Some chocolate eggs were thoughtfully donated to our juniors curlers for dessert by curling icon Kim Dolan!

The two Robbies – Lenentine and Doherty!

We must extend a very special thank you to Robbie and Jennifer Lenentine who generously offered their time, yet again, to support our club and community,  with their time and gifts to help organize this wonderful event! Another thank you to Heather Gauthier, who always quietly steps in and helps where needed. Thank you, Heather!

Another big thank you to our Ice Technician Brent, who worked within a busy schedule to make sure the ice was ready to go! We also thank AJ Campbell who helped Brent with ice maintenance…Thank you, AJ!

And thank you to our attendant Debby who jumped in and helped where needed!

Now what you have all been waiting for…
A Club Red and Blue points total for the day!

This afternoon the Blue Team was able to come out ahead of the Red Team again by winning 28 points. The Red Team earned a solid 19 points.
We should share, these were hard-fought games, filled with lots of strategy and gameplay. All curlers played well. But most of all this was all about the FUN!! Our older junior curlers mentoring our young ones~ who threw a lot of rocks today!

For the skills competition the Blue Team earned 5 points and the Blue Team earned 3 points.

Making the daily points total
Blue = 58
Red= 43

Carrying over the points totals from the Little Rockers and Novice Program (Blue 11, Red 7)  means that:
Blue overall points total to date is: 69
Red overall points total to date is 50

We still have our Stick Curling ‘Red and Blue Division’, our Daytime ‘Red and Blue Division’, and of course our finale: the Independent Grocery ‘Red and Blue Division’ to go!!

Red has their work cut out for them~ but there is lots of curling to go!
