Wednesday availability will depend on enrollment in the Daytime Team league, which uses the morning draw as overflow.

This is a fun, less-competitive, single entry draw, and teams are made up by the draw-master and changed every seven weeks.

8:30-10:30. This is a fun draw for company / organization- sponsored teams, or friends who want to curl as a group. Players can change or rotate from week to week.

This is a team entry draw for our club’s most competitive teams.

WEDNESDAY

• Daytime Competitive League 12:30 – 2:30. This is a team entry draw for our club’s competitive daytime curlers.

• Ladder League 6:30-8:30 & 8:30-10:30. This is a team entry draw for semi-competitive teams; teams remain the same for the curling season, and move between pools or stay put, depending on their record in the previous round. Within each round, pools alternate between 6:30 and 8:30 draws.

• Junior Team Practice 3:30-5:30 pm
• Mixed Draw 6:30 -8:30 & 8:30-10:30 pm. This is single entry league with teams being made up by the draw-master and changed every 7 weeks. Depending on the draw schedule some weeks you would play at 6:30 while other weeks it would be at 8:30. If there are fewer teams than a full draw, as many teams as possible will curl at 6:30.

• Saturday Morning Junior League 9– 11 – seven weeks, as available when not used for club events or Provincial/National championships, and when Junior teams don’t have major events.

We are pleased to let you know our membership rates for the 2019-2020 season. Our adult member rates have been increased by just $10 per person, and our Commercial League rates have been increased by $20 per team for the season to cover salary and building rental cost-of-living increases and other rising expenses, while our “walk-on” and our junior member rates are unchanged from last season.

If you are comparing rates with other curling facilities, we would like you to know the following:

ALL our adult memberships, including one draw per week, give you the opportunity to play in members-only tournaments and compete in provincial championships (entry fees are additional). You may also book practice time on Sundays, or when ice is available, and spare in any league without additional cost. 

Payment terms for adult memberships are as follows: 50% payable on registration night and the remaining 50% payable by December 1st. In order to use this half-payment option with online registration, you must select “pay at Club” from the online payment options. Youth memberships are due upon registration.

Memberships may be paid by debit, credit card, cheque, or cash. HST is extra. A $15 Curl PEI fee, plus $2 Canadian Curling Association fee, will be added to all adult and youth Memberships.

Junior curling program starts Oct. 27, preceded by a Fun Day on the 20th

Our Junior Instructional Program kicks off with our FREE Intro to Curling Fun Day for ages 5-12 on Oct. 20 from 1-3 pm. Our regular instruction starts October 27, and will run on Sundays from 1-2 pm for Little Rockers (age 6-7), and from 2-3 pm for Novice (age 8-12), as well as on Tuesdays from 5-6 pm or Fridays from 4-5 pm for Novice only. Please arrive 15 minutes early to warm up. Juniors curlers (age 13-20) who have completed the instructional program are invited to schedule team practices Monday to Friday after school, and can begin on October 14. 

Little Rockers (ages 6-7). This is an entry-level curling program for children ages 6 and 7. Registration includes one, one-hour session per week, on Sunday afternoons from 1 to 2  pm (please arrive 15 minutes early for stretching and preparation). The instructional curling program is divided into two sessions, before and after the Christmas break, and you can sign up for one or both.

Cost: $55 for Oct. to Dec. or Dec.-March OR $95 for the full season.  HST and $15 Curl PEI Fee and $2.00 Curling Canada Fee will be added to either rate.

Novice Instructional Program (ages 8-12). This is an entry-level curling program for children ages 8 to 12. Registration includes two, one-hour sessions per week. Sessions take place Sunday afternoons from 2 to 3 pm (please arrive 15 minutes early for stretching and preparation) PLUS one, one-hour session, either Tuesdays 5 to 6 pm or Fridays from 4 to 5 pm. (Your time and day for Tuesday/Friday sessions are determined by our registration numbers). Cost: $140.00 + HST and $15 Curl PEI Fee and $2.00 Curling Canada Fee for the season.

 The last instructional day is March 29, and a Closing Party where curlers can skate on the ice is tentatively scheduled for April 5.

All curlers are encouraged to register online at any time starting Oct. 7 at CornwallCurling.com/registration. In-house registration is available as well. Returning Junior Plus members may register in-house on October 9th at the Club from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm. Other new and returning Little Rock, Novice and Junior curlers (and new entries into the Junior Plus) can register in-house on Oct. 16^th from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.

Junior team practice times: Please see the manager and book times for the season. Teams get two practice slots per week between 3:30 and either 5:30 or 6 pm Monday through Friday.

There is also a Saturday morning Under 16 junior team league, running selected dates. Teams from other clubs are welcome to join this league as well.

Evening Leagues: new adult teams will be given first priority to fill open vacancies, and junior teams will be added as space is available. All team members must be 13 years of age or older in order to play in the evening draws.

Junior membership rates (unchanged from last season).  HST + $15 Curl PEI and $2 Curling Canada fees are added )

• Little Rockers (ages 6-7): One session Oct-Dec or Jan-Mar $55. For both sessions: $95.

Provincials

There are a number of Provincial Championships available for Junior curlers to compete in each season, in the Under 13, Under 16, Under 18 and Under 21 (Juniors) age categories. There is also a less competitive Jamboree Day with fun activities. The U13 teams can be any combination of male and female while the others have separate male and female divisions. Helmet Policy

At the Cornwall Curling Curling Club anyone under 12, as well as everyone in the instructional program, is required to wear a helmet. Any helmet – bicycle, hockey, etc. is acceptable.

As was discussed at the Annual General Meeting, we are making changes to our 50X50 “Snowball” draw for adult members this season. In the past we had followed the practice of most places doing these draws by requiring you to sign in weekly. As well, you had to sign in yourself – no one else could sign in for you. This is generally done for the purpose of bringing you into a place of business more frequently so they can sell you more of whatever they sell. This doesn’t really apply to a curling club, where you normally visit only during your regular draw time. To be fair to all draw nights, we followed the practice of holding over the 50X50 draw to the following week in the event that one curling draw was cancelled due to weather or other circumstances, to ensure that everyone had an equal chance to sign in. When a draw was held over to a second week, only the members from the night that was missed signed in, as you can only sign in once for a draw, so the draw pot didn’t grow much the second week.

This year, you will be able to pay in advance for the entire season, and draws will be held EVERY week that there is curling — 25 weeks in total. Our weekly draw entry fee is $2, so you can pay $50 in advance to be covered for the entire season. As well, should you want to continue to sign in weekly, but can’t make it in to sign up on a particular week, you can have someone else put in a Toonie for you and sign the sheet on your behalf. The draw will be held every week, regardless of whether or not all draws are held that week.

Here’s how the weekly draw works, once the season gets underway:
There is a jar by the bar (if it’s not there, ask!), and a notebook by the jar. Chuck a Toonie in the jar, and print and sign your name in the notebook (or have someone else do these two things for you). If you bought the “season ticket” you don’t have to do anything – you will automatically be entered in each weekly draw.

 Each Thursday a name will be drawn from our list of the Club’s paid adult members. If it is YOUR name, and you were signed in that week (or have a “season ticket”), you win half the contents of the jar. If you did NOT sign in or have a season ticket, you would win NOTHING, and the money “snowballs” i.e. is carried over to the next week.

Club Members: if you know of someone who would like to try curling, invite them to our free adult curling school and demonstration on the evenings of October 15th, 16th and 17th! For each new adult curler that you helped to join our Club, you will receive a $20 gift certificate for use at the Club!

It’s almost time to curl here at the Cornwall Curling Club! We welcome new members, from those who have never curled before, to experienced curlers who are looking to join our vibrant Club here in our modern facility at the Cornwall Civic Centre. We welcome members from all over PEI, not just from the Cornwall area, and, although we emphasize the recreational aspects of curling, have also had teams and curlers who have won Provincial, Canadian, and even World titles.

Curling starts Oct. 15

Icemaking will begin by the end of September, with ice available for use on Tuesday, October 15. Our very popular daytime “Drop In” curling from 10 am to noon Monday through Friday (Wednesday will be subject to available sheets when out team league gets going) will begin at that time, with teams made up each day from the players who are there. Both members and walk-on “pay per play” curlers are welcome, with walk-on rates of $10 per game, or 10 game passes for $80. Junior walk-on rates are $5 per game/ HST is included in walk-on rates.

Free Learn to Curl Oct. 15, 16, 17

Starting on Tuesday Oct. 15 beginning at 6:30 pm and continuing for three evenings will be our FREE, no-obligation adult Learn to Curl sessions. Curlers can come any one, two, or all three nights – there will be both new and continuing classes each evening. Wear loose or stretchy pants and a light jacket, and bring clean sneakers — everything else is provided. These evening sessions are for adult curlers, with younger curlers receiving instruction in our Junior Instructional Program, with a money back guarantee for juniors who try it but choose not to continue after a few weeks. 

League Play begins Oct. 20 or Oct. 21

Our evening league play begins, if the curlers choose, with our Mixed Doubles league on Sunday Oct. 20th from 6:30 to 8 pm. The league may also wait until October 27 to begin. Anyone wanting to play should register and indicate which start date they prefer. Most of our other leagues will start beginning the week of Monday Oct. 21. The Daytime league starts later, with the date to be determined.

Individual entry mixed curling, where new teams are made up every seven weeks, takes place Monday and Thursday evenings, semi-competitive team curling is available with our Wednesday evening Ladder League, and our competitive team curling league goes on Tuesday evenings. Weekday draw times are at 6:30 and 8:30 pm. We also have a “Commercial League” on Mondays at 8:30 pm, where a fixed membership fee is paid for the year, and teams can use different players each week if they want, to accommodate work schedules, etc.

Stick Curling 

We are PEI’s most active Stick Curling facility and last season we hosted both the Maritime and the Canadian Stick Championships. Stick curling is a two-person sport, with similarities to Mixed Doubles, and can be played by anyone, including those with mobility challenges, as you use a delivery stick from a standing position instead of a traditional hack delivery. We have even had wheelchair curlers play in Stick events here – our facility is accessible right down to the ice level. Stick curling goes weekday afternoons except for Wednesdays when the Daytime Team League is running. from 12:30 to 2:30. Stick curlers are also welcome to participate in our regular leagues and bonspiels, and in most provincial championships.

Some of Canada’s up-and-coming curling athletes will get a little financial breathing room after being named recipients of the 2019 Curling Canada For the Love of Curling scholarships, Curling Canada announced today.

Among the recipients is Lauren Lenentine, from New Dominion, P.E.I., who got her start here at the Cornwall Curling Club, and will be in the Science program at the University of Manitoba for the upcoming scholastic year. Lauren is curling this season on a Winnipeg team skipped by Mackenzie Zacharias, and including Lauren’s former Nova Scotia teammate Karlee Burgess, and fellow recipient Emily Zacharias.

A total of 62 applications were received from across Canada for the scholarships, which are one of the highlighted initiatives of Curling Canada’s philanthropic program.

A selection committee then took on the difficult task of whittling that list of deserving applicants to the 10 recipients announced today.

“I was extremely proud to be part of this process, and while it was difficult to narrow the list down to the 10 recipients, it was also encouraging to learn more about such an amazing group of young athletes,” said Maureen Miller, Chair of the Curling Canada Board of Governors and a member of the selection committee. “As a sport, I can tell you that we are in good hands going forward. We have extremely talented young curlers, but just as importantly, they are exceptional citizens within their communities.”

The 2019-20 scholarship recipients are:

The scholarship program is an investment in Canada’s curling community, with applicants being assessed on their academic accomplishments and aspirations, their curling achievements and, finally, their volunteer contributions within the community. The successful recipients will utilize the award to cover a portion of their education and curling costs during the 2019-20 school year.

To be eligible for consideration an applicant needs to be enrolled full-time for at least two semesters at a Canadian university or college, in addition to being registered to compete for Canadian Team Ranking System points during the 2019-20 curling season.

The selection committee comprised Miller, Curling Canada Chief Executive Officer Katherine Henderson, longtime curling coaches Jeff Hoffart and Adam Kingsbury, and former For the Love of Curling scholarship recipients Kaitlyn Jones, Kristen Streifel and Karsten Sturmay.

Streifel, in fact, contributed $1,200 to Curling Canada’s philanthropic program by participating in the 2019 Women of Curling Calendar.

The Curling Canada philanthropic program was introduced during the 2013-14 season to help junior curling and to support curling centres in Canada. Last season, donors invested $494,755 in the sport of curling to support youth programs across Canada. The Egg Farmers Rocks & Rings program presented by Curling Canada, Curling 101-Try Curling, Hit Draw Tap presented by Tim Hortons, and For the Love of Curling scholarships are only made possible thanks to the generous support of Canada’s curling community.

Cornwall Town Council met last evening with the incoming executive of the Cornwall Curling Club to discuss their continuing collaboration with the Club as they renew their lease agreement with the Town. With over 300 members, the curling club is the largest in the province and it is a leading source of sports tourism in the Town.

Thanks to everyone who helped out again this year at our lobster and steak catering event for the PEI Roadbuilders and Heavy Construction Association. The upstairs hall was filled to capacity, and the downstairs bar was busy too, and by all reports, the Association and attendees were VERY pleased with the event, which we cater annually as a Club fundraiser.

Team Ferguson returning from the Canada Games

One of the highlights of the year was the Lauren Ferguson rink competing in THREE Canadian Championships – the Canadian Juniors, the Canada Games, and the Under 18, with David Murphy coaching the first two, and Pat Quilty subbing in the U18 while David was curling in the Canadian Masters. They also won the Fall Fling in Summerside. Team member Alexis Burris and coach Quilty both won Balance Plus Fair Play awards at the U18.

Team Mitchell Schut was also both Canada Games and U18 reps.

We also hosted both the Maritime and the Canadian Stick Curling Championships, along with the PEI Under 18 championships, and by all reports, all went well!

2018 Canada 55+ Games in Saint John, N.B.:
The Cornwall rink of Gloria Clarke, Ruth Stavert, Elaine Hughes, and Janette Fraser won the 65-plus women’s curling division, while Cornwall member Marjorie Matthews earned two gold medals and a silver in track and field, In bocce, Adrian Clarke and Cornwall member Ernie Stavert were in a four-way tie for first but lost on tie-breaking rules.

Passings:

Paul Horne, who survived a cardiac incident on the ice at our Club in 2010, passed away in December, while former Club President Joe Doyle passed in January.

Upcoming:

Remaining events this  year are our Annual General Meeting on May 24th, and our annual Golf Tournament on June 15

Next season will be somewhat of a transition year at the Club, with our long-time Manager, Bev McCormick, retiring, and Lance Lowther, our only head ice-maker since the Club began, also announcing that he is stepping back. We wish them the best of luck in the future and note that our Club will have a number of changes to deal with, but we’re sure things will go well, with help from our members and our Board of Directors! We hope to see everyone back at the Club in mid-October for our 2019-2020 season!

Synergy Fitness & Nutrition is once again offering an off-season Sport Performance Training Program to Island curlers.  All ages are welcome.  The folks at Synergy Fitness & Nutrition will work with your level of fitness to ensure your training is fitting your needs.

Participating Curlers will receive:

• 60-minute Training Sessions
• Training Program
• Training Skills Session (Goal Setting, Growth Mindset, Nutrition, etc.)
• Performance Fitness Testing

This 36+ Session Package is $250+tax.

In addition to the package, Curl PEI is hosting a FREE TRAINING NIGHT, open to those who would like to try it out before committing as well as to those who already know they will be participating and would like to get started!  The FREE TRAINING NIGHT will be Monday, May 6 from 6:30-8:30 pm and will include 60 minutes of training as well as a Goal Setting Session.  Please let me know if you are interested in attending the FREE TRAINING NIGHT by Friday, May 3 (minimum participation is required).

The Sport Performance Training Program will run Mondays and Wednesdays (May 6-September 18) starting at 6:30 pm.  If you miss a session you will be provided makeup times/dates.  If you are unable to attend on Mondays and Wednesdays you can work with the folks at Synergy Fitness & Nutrition to find a schedule that works for you.

*Note: May 6 & May 8 will be 6:30-8: 30 pm as there will be 60 minutes in the gym followed by a workshop session*

This is a great opportunity to work on conditioning in the off-season to prepare to reach your goals next winter.

I would like to thank the club members, board and staff for the very generous retirement gifts. I will certainly enjoy using the gifts and remembering your thoughtfulness.

I really appreciated all of the kind words, well wishes and lots of great retirement advice.

 As I look forward to a new life after my retirement, I will certainly miss the enjoyable time I have spent working for the Cornwall Curling Club. I will very much miss seeing everyone on a daily or weekly basis; the draws, the events, the meetings and even the small disasters!

 I am very proud of what the Club has accomplished over the years and wish the club members, board and staff continued success.

Once again Team Red wins, but things were definitely closer than the last few years…it was a nail biter for sure!

Well another closing spiel has wrapped up. The Leary’s Independent Grocer Red vs. Blue Spiel has come to an end with a victory for the Red team!  Using the Skins format again this year, the Friday night draw ended with both teams tied! The Red Team overtook the Blue Team in the end though!

Throughout the weekend there were a few ways to earn bonus points. Friday night word games were played and Saturday was all about team challenge activities!  Lots of fun was had by all who participated and the energy in the room was contagious!

At the end of the day, Shirley Berry took home $100, half of the Draw to the Button sign-up fees . The 50/50 was drawn by Jen Lenentine with Amanda MacIntosh taking home $105. The reverse draw for a membership was held again this year and Gerald Dykerman was the big winner.  A prize was awarded to our best-dressed member, Paul Neima of the Blue Team, as well.

There was no shortage of food on the weekend. Friday night curlers were treated to lots of finger foods as well as entertainment from the band, Just Cuz.  Saturday we enjoyed muffins, sweet loaves and biscuits for breakfast from Mary’s Bakery and lunch was barbecued burgers and sausages.

After the last of the stones were thrown for the year, we headed upstairs for our amazing beef dinner prepared by Alan Carmichael.  After dinner,our Club President, Gary O’Sullivan presented the prizes and thanked organizers, members, club staff, and all our many volunteers!

He was not exaggerating saying that this had been a great season, and inviting everyone to attend the annual Golf Tournament. The awards ceremony started then with 1st prize to Spiel Champs, taking first place for Team Red, Team Bryan Sutherland (by a draw after a tie with Team Angus Kennedy), who were given the first pick from the table, then on to the highest amount of skins being won by the Team Blue (a tie) Team Greg Groves and Team Joe Callaghan. All other teams were then called up in order of skins they had won to choose from the prize table.

Laurie and I would like to extend a special thank you to Ray Biage for doing up the Teams & Draws for this event  and Derek McEwen for his computer expertise! We know Draw Master is not an easy Job! Thanks! Also thanks to our Banker, Carlene Peters, nothing got by her!  

As always there are many thanks to pass along and in fear of forgetting someone we would like to just thank all those who helped out even if you didn’t think what you did was a big job it was to us as organizers. All the little things really add up to something Big!  So a big Thank you to all our Volunteers!!! Lastly to our sponsor Leary’s Independent Grocer it’s great to have your support thanks so much!!!

We hope everyone enjoys their summer off and look forward to doing it all over again next year!

Under 18 in Sherwood Park Alberta: PEI teams have finished out of the Championship Round. Lauren Ferguson girl’s rink got off to a great start with a 3-0 record, but lost their last three round robin games, to Northern Ont., Alberta 2, and Ontario. The Mitchell Schut boy’s finished at 2-4, losing their last three matches to Saskatchewan and the two Alberta rinks.

Sandy Hope team

Canadian Masters in Saskatoon: PEI’s Sandy Hope women’s team advanced to the Championship round, and have a 3-5 record, and will finish up against Alberta at 1 pm Saturday. Sask. leads at 8-0, followed by Albarta at 7-1.

PEI’s Bill Hope men’s rink were in the Seeding Pool following round robin play, and are at 2-6, finishing against NS today. Sask. leads at 8-0, followed by BC at 7-1.

They play Northern Ontario today. The Mitchell Schut boy’s team, also from Cornwall, is 2-2, following a win over NL  and a loss to Sask. Team Schut faces Alberta today.
