Casey to face MacKenzie in B semi, with winner playing Newson in B final

The second of the three qualifying spots for Tuesday’s championship round at the Curl PEI Tankard Provincial Men’s Curling Championship will be determined on Sunday at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton. Unseeded Jamie Newson upset top seeded Adam Casey with a 6-4 win in the A qualifier on Saturday morning. Tankard

The Curl PEI Tankard Provincial Men’s Curling Championship gets underway today and wraps up by Tuesday afternoon, while the new Future Tankard junior developmental event goes Saturday and Sunday, with both events taking place at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton. Six teams, including the top-seeded Adam Casey rink, ranked number eleven in the nation, are taking part in the Tankard, with the winning team advancing to the pre-qualifier round for the 2015 Tim Hortons Brier, which takes place February 28 – March 8, 2015 in Calgary, AB.

Due to road conditions, Friday Tankard opening draw times have been changed (twice), to 2pm & 6:30pm. Other draws in the event will remain at their originally scheduled time.

The Future Tankard, with three teams signed up, is a developmental event for junior curlers who may one day compete in the Tankard, and takes place on the same weekend and at the same location. Competitors from the Pepsi Junior Men’s Championship are invited to attend. Future event participants will be paired up with an adult team, invited to the meal and the opening ceremonies, and will play three games over the weekend. Opening Future Tankard draw is Saturday at 3:30 PM.

Curl PEI has partnered with BellAliant Community One to bring  live curling action from the Curl PEI Tankard Provincial Men’s Curling Championship.  All Tankard games from sheets one and two at the three sheet club will be webcast exclusively on Community One.

BellAliant Community One has already provided livestream coverage this season from the Curl Atlantic Championship in Charlottetown, along with several curling events in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Island curlers will provide the play by play and colour commentary.

Amy Duncan, Executive Director of Curl PEI says that this new partnership for online coverage “puts PEI in the same league as the other provinces, most of which have either webstream or TV coverage of their major provincial championships.”

Here is the Modified Triple Knockout Tankard Draw.  Four teams are seeded in the draw based on cashspiel winnings at designated events this season. The winners of the A, B, and C qualifying games will advance to the two game qualifying round. Teams can qualify in more than one section. In the event that a team wins all three sections, they will be declared Tankard champ without a qualifying round. If a team wins any two of the sections, they will play in both games CH1 and CH2, and win the title if they take either, while their opponent would have to win both. If there are three separate section winners, the team that played in the most section finals would have a bye to game CH2, and the other teams would square off in CH1, with the winner advancing to CH2. If teams are tied in games played, the earliest qualifier would advance to CH2.

Volunteers needed for extra night of PEI newcomers

DSC00218

Dozens of newcomers to our country had a chance to try the very Canadian sport of curling here at the Cornwall Curling Club on three Sunday evenings in January. The ice was filled with curlers of all ages each evening, with new curlers each night, as well as some returning for multiple nights. The last night had so many curlers signed up that an additional evening, this Sunday, February 8, from 6-8 PM has been scheduled, and we will again require on-ice volunteers to help make it happen. There is a signup sheet at the big board by Bev’s office, and it would be appreciated if those who helped out before, along with new helpers, could signup and help the newcomers learn our favourite sport!

Kennedy edges Fowler in points scored to win Kenmac Energy Bonspiel

The annual Kenmac Energy Bonspiel was held over the weekend with a full draw of 24 teams participating. A winter storm caused a delay in play on Saturday morning but all teams still fit in three games (one six end game Friday night and two four end games on Saturday). After the three games, the Angus Kennedy and Bob Fowler teams both had accumulated the same number of points. The Kennedy team won the tiebreaker by points scored and were the overall winner of the spiel.  Gordon Matthews from Kenmac Energy was absent due to sickness so his daughter, Linda Matthews, presented the prizes on his behalf. Prizes were PetroCanada gift cards and trophies for the winners. The next five teams  also received PetroCanada gift cards.  Extra mussels and two hats from Kenmac Energy were also given as door prizes.  Vince Fisher was the winner of the 50/50 draw and the Paul Durant team won the trivia and four $10 Cornwall Curling Club gift cards.

The winning teams were:

The Club and organizers would like to send a huge thank you to Kenmac Energy for their continued sponsorship of this great event.  Besides trophies, prizes and door prizes, Kenmac Energy also generously supplied coffee and baked goods from their CountryStyle restaurants on Saturday morning.

Other food throughout the weekend was purchased from PEI Aqua Farms and draw sponsors Cornwall Pizza Delight and KFC.

Thank you to Club staff Bev, Al, Kelly, Ray and Lance, as well as Jeff and Debby for helping with the ice and 50/50 draws. Thank you to Carlene Peters, Joanne and Paul Durant, Frank Weiler, Angus Davies, Ankur Deshpande, Danielle Girard and Edmond Richard, and all participants to helped with set up, cleaning and food preparation. Thank to M.C. Bob Fowler. Thank you to all for a successful event!

PEI Newcomers take to the ice here at Cornwall. 4th evening now scheduled

Dozens of newcomers to our country had a chance to try the very Canadian sport of curling at the Cornwall Curling Club on three Sunday evenings in January. The ice was filled with curlers of all ages each evening, with new curlers each night, as well as some returning for multiple nights. The last night had so many curlers signed up that an additional evening, February 8, from 6-8 PM, has been scheduled. The event is a collaboration between the curling club, and the PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada, with funding assistance for the ice rental provided under the Sport Partnership and Engagement Program, a project of the Sport Participation Bilateral which is jointly funded by the Province of PEI (Department of Health and Wellness) and the Federal Government (Canadian Heritage – Sport Canada). Instruction was provided by volunteers from the curling club.

If there are additional PEI newcomers who would like to register for the final night, they are asked to contact Joe Byrne at the PEIANC at joeb@peianc.com or (902) 628-6009 ext. 224.

This video of the first evening was produced by Jeff Eager.

Six Tankard, and three Junior Tankard teams are entered.

Live Curlcast results will be available at curlatlantic.com/scoreboard. Note that there are separate websites for the Tankard and the Future Tankard, because they play a different number of ends (10 ends for Tankard games, 8 for the Future Tankard).

An announcement will be coming soon on additional coverage for this event.

PEI, Ontario survive first men’s tiebreaker at Canadian Juniors, Cornwall’s Veronica Smith wins in Seeding Round (CCA)

(by Al Cameron)

CORNER BROOK, N.L. — There was plenty of potential for PEI’s Tyler Smith to look back on his Tuesday at the 2015 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Curling Championships as a disaster.

P.E.I. skip Tyler Smith, left, and vice Brooks Roche enjoy a lighter moment during Tuesday night's tiebreaker. (Photo, Amanda Rumboldt)

In his team’s final preliminary round-robin game, absolutely nothing went right, and the Montague-based team (third Brooks Roche, second Dylan Lowery, lead Ryan Lowery, coach Kevin Smith, Tyler’s dad) was shut out 7-0 by Northern Ontario’s Tanner Horgan (Sudbury) to finish the preliminary round at 2-4.

That dropped them into a two-round tiebreaker scenario in a bid to earn a berth in the eight-team Championship Round, and the first of those tiebreakers, against Joe Wallingham of the Yukon (Whitehorse), hardly started ideally as the northern squad stole three in the third end to go up 4-1.

But the 16-year-old Smith would rally the troops, bouncing back with a game-tying three in the fourth end en route to a 6-5 victory that wasn’t secured until Wallingham flashed on his last-rock takeout attempt in the 10th end, giving P.E.I. the steal and the win.

The result means P.E.I. will have a rematch with Northern Ontario Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. (all times AST) for the final Pool B berth in the Championship Round, while the final Pool A berth will be decided at the same time between Ontario’s Mac Calwell (Belleville) and Nova Scotia’s Matthew Manuel (Halifax).

“We weren’t very happy with the way we played this afternoon, and we had a bad third end there (against the Yukon), but other than that we played pretty solid,” said Smith. “We always fight hard when we get down. We’re kind of known for never giving up, and always coming after them. We got down three and we thought, ‘Hey, it’s no big deal.’ We were down three to them (Yukon) a couple days ago and came back and won. Down three? We should be able to do it again.”

Smith skipped P.E.I. at the 2013 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors in Fort McMurray, Alta., and arrived in Corner Brook with higher expectations than his first go-round.

“My second time being here, one of our goals was to make the championship pool,” he said. “We’re not expected to win it, but we still have a chance. That’s all you need.”

Also still with a chance is Calwell’s Ontario team, which held off home-province hopeful Greg Smith of Newfoundland/Labrador 9-7 in the other tiebreaker.

Caldwell, with third Kurt Armstrong, second (and twin brother) Morgan Calwell, lead Matthew Pretty and coach Greg Pretty, scored a big three in the sixth end and stole one more in the seventh to take control and help salvage something from what has been a disappointing few days here.

“We’ve been struggling — mostly it’s been me having a hard time adjusting,” said Calwell. “Just one of those off weeks. You can’t be perfect all the time. But that game started to feel a little bit better. It’s good to still have a chance here. We just have to win that second tiebreaker.”

The top three teams in each pool, plus two teams with the next best won-lost records, advance to the Championship Round for a further four-game partial round robin from Wednesday through Friday, with their earlier records carried forward.

Meanwhile, the six teams of each gender that didn’t qualify for the Championship Round meet in a Seeding Round to determine ranking for the 2016 Canadian Juniors in Stratford, Ont.

Clear to the Championship Round out of Pool A were Quebec’s Félix Asselin (Montreal, 6-0), defending champ Braden Calvert of Manitoba (Winnipeg; 5-1) and B.C.’s Paul Henderson (Victoria; 4-2). Moving on from Pool B were Alberta’s Karsten Sturmay (Edmonton; 5-1), Saskatchewan’s Jacob Hersikorn (Saskatoon; 5-1) and 2014 silver-medallist Rene Comeau of New Brunswick (Fredericton; 5-1).

The women’s advancers from Pool A were defending world champ Kelsey Rocque of Alberta (Edmonton; 6-0); Ontario’s Chelsea Brandwood (Hamilton; 5-1); Quebec’s Émilia Gagné (Jonquière/Alma; 4-2) and Manitoba’s Beth Peterson (Winnipeg; 3-3).

Advancing out of Pool B were 2013 gold-medallist Corryn Brown of B.C. (Kamloops; 6-0), last year’s bronze-medallist Mary Fay of Nova Scotia (Chester; 4-2), Saskatchewan’s Kristen Streifel (Saskatoon; 4-2) and New Brunswick’s Justine Comeau (Fredericton; 3-3).

In the women’s Seeding Round games Tuesday night, the Yukon’s Bailey Horte (Whitehorse; 2-5) downed Carina McKay-Saturnino (Inuvik; 1-6) 5-3, while P.E.I.’s Veronica Smith (Cornwall; 3-4) was a 10-4 winner over Nunavut’s Sadie Pinksen (Iqaluit; 0-7).

Action at the 2015 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors continues on Wednesday Championship and Seeding Round draws at 9:30 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. (all times AST).

Round-robin games are taking place at both the Corner Brook Civic Centre and the Corner Brook Curling Club.

Upon completion of the Championship Round, the top team of each gender advances to its respective final, while the second- and third-place finishers meet in a semifinal to determine the other finalist.

All members of the non-playoff teams will compete in a Mixed Doubles competition on Saturday and Sunday.

All playoff games will be played at the Civic Centre. The men’s and women’s playoffs will be televised by the TSN network as well as RDS2 (French). The women’s semifinal is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 31, at 1 p.m. AST, with the gold-medal game at 7:30 p.m. AST.

Veronica Smith out of playoffs, but Tyler Smith hangs on, despite loss to N. Ont., to play in 6:30 pm tiebreaker at Cdn. Jrs. (CCA)

(by Al Cameron)

CORNER BROOK, N.L. — The relief on Tanner Horgan’s face was obvious late Tuesday afternoon at the Corner Brook Civic Centre.

A day after a crushing defeat to the Yukon at the 2015 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Curling Championships — the result of having his last-rock takeout attempt catch some debris — Horgan’s Northern Ontario team from Sudbury was on its last life, facing Prince Edward Island’s Tyler Smith and needing a win to keep any semblance of a playoff hope alive.

Mission accomplished. The young Northern Ontario team — skip Horgan is 16, third (and brother) Tanner Horgan is 14, second Connor Lawes is 18 and lead Maxime Blais is 16 — rolled to a 7-0 win over the Islanders, and will play in the second of two tiebreaker rounds on Wednesday morning — part of a six-team logjam to determine the final two berths into the eight-team Championship Round. Northern Ontario finished 2-4 in Pool B, tied with P.E.I. (Montague) and the Yukon’s Joe Wallingham (Whitehorse), while in Pool A, Nova Scotia’s Matthew Manuel (Halifax), Ontario’s Mac Calwell (Belleville) and Newfoundland/Labrador’s Greg Smith (Stephenville) also finished 2-4 to set up the tiebreaker situation.

The top three teams in each pool, plus two teams with the next best won-lost records, advance to the Championship Round for a further four-game partial round robin from Wednesday through Friday, with their earlier records carried forward.

Meanwhile, the six teams of each gender that don’t qualify for the Championship Round meet in a Seeding Round to determine ranking for the 2016 Canadian Juniors in Stratford, Ont.

“Yeah, I guess you could say it was a must-win,” agreed a smiling Horgan, who opened the scoring with a fifth-end deuce, then stole one in the sixth, a crushing three in the seventh and one more in the eighth to prompt handshakes. “We keep getting better; 2-and-4 is not really showing what we can do. Every team is good here, and if you don’t show that slight step above what you know you’re capable of, you lose, you don’t get the breaks.

“We’re still alive; we can still improve, we can still take another run at it, and that’s the good thing.”

Northern Ontario will await the winner of the first-round Pool B tiebreaker today at 6:30 p.m. Atlantic between the Yukon and P.E.I.

In Pool A, Newfoundland/Labrador will play Ontario at 6:30 p.m. tonight, with the winner going on to play Nova Scotia at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday for the right to play in the Championship Round.

In the final men’s preliminary games, Quebec finished with a 7-4 win over Ontario; Manitoba turned back Newfoundland/Labrador 8-3; and B.C. downed Nunavut’s Kane Komaksiutiksak (Rankin Inlet; 0-6) 19-2.

The women’s picture, meanwhile, was clean following the conclusion of the preliminary round.

Moving on out of Pool A were defending world champ Kelsey Rocque of Alberta (Edmonton; 6-0); Ontario’s Chelsea Brandwood (Hamilton; 5-1); Quebec’s Émilia Gagné (Jonquière/Alma; 4-2) and Manitoba’s Beth Peterson (Winnipeg; 3-3).

Nova Scotia picked up what could turn out to be a crucial win, taking two in the 10th end to beat Saskatchewan 5-4; that could play a role in determining seedings in the Championship Round.

In other women’s games to close out the preliminary round, Alberta scored four in the seventh end for a 9-6 win over Northern Ontario’s Krysta Burns (Sudbury; 2-4); Newfoundland/Labrador’s Sarah Hill (St. John’s; 1-5) turned back Carina McKay-Saturnino of the Northwest Territories (Inuvik; 1-5) 9-5; and Quebec stole three in the seventh end for a 10-6 win over Sadie Pinksen of Nunavut (Iqaluit; 0-6). [Cornwall PEI’s Veronica Smith team finished earlier with a 2-4 record, and did not make the playoffs, so she will compete in the Seeding Round].

Action at the 2015 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors continues on Tuesday with the first of the women’s Seeding Round draws, along with the tiebreakers, at 6:30 p.m.

AST/noon EST, with the gold-medal game at 7:30 p.m. AST/6:30 p.m. EST.

Looks like Veronica Smith is out of playoff contention, while Tyler Smith still has a chance at the Canadian Jrs.

Note: PEI women, skipped by Cornwall’s Veronica Smith, have finished round robin play at 2-4, and will not advance to the playoff round, as the top three teams in each pool, plus two teams with the next best won-lost records, advance to the Championship Round, and there are four rinks in her pool and four in the other one that currently have at least 3 wins. Nova Scotia’s Mary Fay (Chester; 3-2), the 2014 bronze-medallist, improved her hopes of moving on to the championship round with a 6-4 win over Smith this morning.

CORNER BROOK, N.L. — It’s already been a grind for the competing teams at the 2015 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Curling Championships.

But now, things are about to get a little more serious with the impending end of the preliminary round-robin, and the determining of which teams will still be alive to advance to the weekend playoff round.

Three more men’s teams clinched spots in the eight-team Championship Round after victories on Tuesday morning — Saskatchewan’s Jacob Hersikorn (Saskatoon) after an entertaining 7-5 win over previously unbeaten Karsten Sturmay of Alberta (Edmonton; 5-1); defending champ Braden Calvert of Manitoba (Winnipeg) with an 8-5 triumph over B.C.’s Paul Henderson (Victoria; 3-2); and 2014 silver-medallist Rene Comeau of New Brunswick (Fredericton) with a 7-6 win over Northern Ontario’s Tanner Horgan (Sudbury; 1-4).

Hersikorn’s team — third Cole Tenetiuk, second Brady Kendel, lead Brandon Leippi, coach Laurie Burrows — joined the Albertans in the championship round out of Pool B, scoring three in the 10th end thanks to Hersikorn’s precision angle-raise tap for the victory.

“That was a really good game; close the whole way,” said Hersikorn, 20 who’s skipping in his first M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors after playing second for Saskatchewan in 2012 and 2013. “We just did our best to have all the right angles at the end. I was pretty confident throwing the last rock. The last end, we played really well — we didn’t miss much. It was a good game overall.”

Saskatchewan, Alberta and New Brunswick finished the preliminary round at 5-1 to nail down Championship Round berths, while the fourth Pool B qualifier will be decided in this afternoon’s draw.

In Pool A, Calvert’s reigning champs — third Kyle Kurz, second Lucas Van Den Bosch, lead Brendan Wilson — took control against B.C. with three in the fifth end and a steal of one in the sixth to improve to 4-1, behind only Quebec’s Félix Asselin (5-0). Both teams are through to the Championship Round.

We’re in a pretty good spot,” said Calvert, who’ll finish his preliminary round against Newfoundland/Labrador’s Greg Smith (Stephenville; 2-3) this afternoon. “There’s lots of adrenalin out there, but we’re trying not to look to far ahead and just take it one game at a time.”

In other men’s action, Prince Edward Island’s Tyler Smith (Montague; 2-3) kept his hopes of advancing alive with a 13-2 win over Matthew Miller of the Northwest Territories (Inuvik; 0-6); and Nova Scotia’s Matthew Manuel (Halifax; 2-4) also has hopes of moving on after beating Nunavut’s Kane Komaksiutiksak (Rankin Inlet; 0-5). [Smith is currently playing his final round robin match, against Northern Ontario (1-4) ,in a game that got underway at 2 pm AT.]

In women’s play, B.C.’s Corryn Brown (Kamloops) finished off a perfect preliminary round at 6-0 in Pool B with an 8-4 triumph over New Brunswick’s Justine Comeau (Fredericton; 3-3). The result also clinched a Championship Round berth for Saskatchewan’s Tricia Streifel (Saskatoon; 4-1) who had a bye.

In the other women’s game, Manitoba’s Beth Peterson (Winnipeg; 3-3), claimed a must-win, 12-5 over the Yukon’s Bailey Horte (Whitehorse, 1-5). Manitoba is 3-3 in Pool A and in the hunt for a tiebreaker to advance.

Alberta’s Kelsey Rocque (Edmonton; 5-0) and Ontario’s Chelsea Brandwood (Hamilton; 5-1) are through to the Championship Round.

Action at the 2015 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors continues on Tuesday with draws at 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. (All times NST; EST plus 90 minutes).

Round-robin games are taking place at both the Corner Brook Civic Centre and the Corner Brook Curling Club.

Upon completion of the Championship Round, the top team of each gender advances to its respective final, while the second- and third-place finishers meet in a semifinal to determine the other finalist.

Former Cornwall Junior curler Michelle McQuaid excited, overwhelmed to be heading to her 1st national women’s ch’ship (Journal)

(by Jason Simmonds)

SUMMERSIDE – Michelle McQuaid will realize a dream next month.

Michelle McQuaid, second stone with the Suzanne Birt rink, will compete in her first-ever Scotties Tournament of Hearts Canadian women’s curling championship next month.

The second stone for the Suzanne Birt rink of the Charlottetown Curling Complex will compete in her first-ever Scotties Tournament of Hearts Canadian women’s curling championship in Moose Jaw, Sask., from Feb. 14 to 22.“I’m so excited, overwhelmed a little bit,” said McQuaid after Team Birt defeated Kathy O’Rourke 10-4 at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside on Monday afternoon to win the provincial title. “I really wanted to get to my first (national) Scotties.”

McQuaid and lead Susan McInnis joined forces with Birt and third stone Shelly Bradley two seasons ago. After a tough provincial championship last season, the Birt rink went 5-1 in the modified triple-knockout format over the four-day event.

“This year, we just decided we were going to relax, go out and have fun and play our game and not worry about our opposition,” said McQuaid. “Just do what we can do and we did that. It was a really fun weekend.”

McQuaid admitted the women’s game “is definitely different” than the junior ranks, where she played third stone for skip Sarah Fullerton’s three consecutive provincial junior women’s championships from 2010 to 2012.

Suzanne Birt wins her 8th PEI Women’s Curling Championship

The Suzanne Birt rink from the Charlottetown Curling Complex beat their clubmates the Kathy O’Rourke team by a 10-4 score in eight ends this afternoon to win the PEI Scotties Tournament of Hearts Provincial Women’s Curling Championship, sponsored by Kruger Products, at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside. It’s Birt’s 8th PEI women’s title. This time she was playing with third Shelly Bradley, second stone Michelle McQuaid, and lead Susan McInnis. Peter Gallant coaches Team Birt.

File photo (L-R): Suzanne Birt, Shelly Bradley, Michelle McQuaid, Susan McInnis

The runner-up O’Rourke team includes Robyn Green, who throws fourth stones, Meaghan Hughes, who tosses third, lead Tricia Affleck, alternate Stefanie Clark, and coach Al Ledgerwood. O’Rourke, who was also runner-up last year, throws second, and calls the game. Both skips are Summerside natives. The winning Birt rink will now advance to the national 2015 Scotties in Moose Jaw SK, Feb. 14-22.

O’Rourke won the A event in the modified triple knockout round, while Birt took the B and C, eliminating defending champion and clubmate Kim Dolan in the latter. The fourth team in the event, skipped by Lisa Jackson out of the Cornwall Curling Club, didn’t manage to pick up a win.

As Birt won two of the three knockout round sections, she would have taken the title had she won either the 1 pm or the 6 pm games today, while O’Rourke would have had to win both. As Birt won on the first try, the evening draw is not required.

In this afternoon’s final, Birt got on the board early, using last rock advantage to draw for a deuce in end one.  O’Rourke’s last-rock-thrower Robyn Green tied it with a draw for 2 in the second end, but Birt responded by drawing for a triple in the third. Green was facing three Birt counters in the fourth end, but made her draw for a single to narrow the score to 5-3. However, Birt drew for a triple in the next end to make it 8-3 going to the fifth end break.

In end six, Green attempted to hit her own rock onto a Birt counter to stay for two, but missed, giving up a steal of 1. Green drew for a single in the 7th to make it 9-4 for Birt. In the eighth, Birt attempted to put the game out of reach with a hit and stick for two, but she rolled out and had to settle for 1. However, one turned out to be enough, as Team O’Rourke decided it was handshake time, with a six rock deficit.

The Future Scotties developmental event for female curlers under 21 was held at the same time and venue as the Scotties, with Lauren Lenentine of Cornwall going 3-0 in the round robin, Lauren Moerike of Charlottetown finishing at 2-1,  Sierra Clyke from Crapaud and the Silver Fox going 1-2, and Kristie Rogers of Cornwall finishing at 0-3

Birt vs O’Rourke in Scotties finals today at 1, and if needed, 6 pm

The Suzanne Birt rink from the Charlottetown Curling Complex will have two chances today to win the PEI Scotties Tournament of Hearts Provincial Women’s Championship title in the two game championship series, at 1 and 6 pm. at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside. The Birt rink won two sections – the B and the C, of the modified triple knockout draw, and will take the title if they win either game, while  their opponents in both games, the Kathy O’Rourke rink, also from Charlottetown, who won the A section, would have to win both games.

Birt stole a deuce on a measure in the 10th end of the C final Sunday  afternoon in the C final against the defending champion Kim Dolan rink, to come from behind and win their game by a 7-6 score, eliminating Dolan from the competition. Dolan took a 4-1 lead in the 3rd end, when she made a double hit for 4. Birt narrowed the gap with singles in the next two ends, but Dolan took singles of her own in ends six and 7 for a 6-3 lead. Drawing against four Dolan counters, Birt picked up a single in end seven eight. She stole another single in nine when Dolan was light on a draw to the button attempt, to put Birt one down without hammer coming home, but two great draws in the final end gave her the win, when Dolan’s fina stone left two Birt counters.

Here’s the end by end recap of the game:

End 10: Birt makes 2 great draws. Dolan draws to cut them down to 1. Measure for steal of 2. Game over Birt 7 Dolan 6

Home team picks up crowd-pleasing win at 2015 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors

(By )

CORNER BROOK, N.L. — When it comes to enthusiasm at the 2015 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships, competitors will be extremely hard-pressed to match the first-day performance of home-province hopeful Greg Smith.

The 18-year-old sales rep from St. John’s (some 700 kilometres to the east of here) had the crowd at the Corner Brook Civic Centre in the palm of his hand on Saturday night thanks to his combination of loud exhortations of his teammates, his old-school high-lift backswing on the delivery and his general delight at representing Newfoundland/Labrador at the Canadian Juniors.

All of that, combined with his team’s emphatic 8-3 win over Ontario’s Mac Calwell (Belleville), made for a memorable Saturday night for Smith.

“It was a lot of fun tonight,” agreed Smith “I’m pretty crazy on the ice — just a little bit loud. I guess I’m the male Heather Nedohin. But it was a good time. The boys played fantastic, and I followed suit.

“It’s an amazing feeling to look up in the crowd and see the Newfoundland flags, and seeing the people from your province rooting for you and cheering their little hearts out. It’s an amazing feeling, it really is.”

Smith, backed by third Ryan McNeil Lamswood, second Kyle Barron and lead Craig Laing (the team is based in Stephenville, 80 kilometres southwest of Corner Brook), improved to 1-1 in the round-robin standings thanks largely to a double-takeout in the sixth end to score a go-ahead three, followed quickly by a steal of one in the seventh and two more in the eighth to prompt handshakes from the Ontarians (1-1) and more cheers from the home-province faithful.

“I tried to feed off the crowd,” said Smith, before adding with a laugh: “I was a little hungry; I only had a muffin and a coffee today, so I had to feed off something.”

In other men’s action on Saturday night, P.E.I.’s Tyler Smith (Montague) won a roller-coaster 12-9 decision over the Yukon’s Joe Wallingham (Whitehorse) to improve to 1-1. The Islanders gave up five in the seventh end to the Yukon (0-2), but rallied with four in the eighth, then stole singles in the ninth and 10th ends for the victory.

Elsewhere, Alberta’s Karsten Sturmay (Edmonton) scored deuces in the fourth, sixth and eighth ends for a 6-4 win over New Brunswick’s Rene Comeau (Fredericton). Alberta improved to 2-0, while New Brunswick evened out at 1-1.

Also, Saskatchewan’s Jacob Hersikorn (Saskatoon) capped a perfect 2-0 opening day with an 8-6 triumph over Northern Ontario’s Tanner Horgan (Sudbury). Saskatchewan scored a go-ahead two in the eighth end, then put the win in the bank with a stolen point in the ninth. It was Northern Ontario’s first game of the event.

In women’s play, meanwhile, 2013 champion Corryn Brown and Team B.C. (Kamloops) improved to 2-0 with an 8-6 win over 2014 bronze-medallist Mary Fay of Nova Scotia (Chester). B.C. took an early 5-0 lead thanks to two in the first end and a stolen three in the second, then hung on for the win. Nova Scotia dropped to 1-1.

Prince Edward Island’s Veronica Smith (Cornwall) bounced back from an earlier loss to post a 10-8 win over Newfoundland/Labrador’s Sarah Hill (St. John’s). P.E.I. tied the game 7-7 with three in the seventh, then added a deuce in the ninth and a stolen point in the 10th to drop Newfoundland/Labrador to 0-2.

Defending world junior champ Kelsey Rocque of Alberta (Edmonton), with her new lineup, needed an extra end to score a 5-4 victory over Manitoba’s Beth Peterson (Winnipeg). Alberta improved to 2-0 while Manitoba dipped to 1-1.

In the other Saturday night game, Saskatchewan’s Kristen Streifel (Saskatoon) scored two in the 10th end for an 8-6 triumph over New Brunswick’s Justine Comeau (Fredericton). Saskatchewan finished the opening day with two wins, while it was the first game for New Brunswick.

Action at the 2015 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors continues on Sunday, with draws at 9:30 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. (Atlantic time)

Round-robin games are taking place at both the Corner Brook Civic Centre and the Corner Brook Curling Club.

Once the top three teams for each gender have been determined, all playoff games will be played at the Civic Centre. The men’s and women’s playoffs will be televised by the TSN network as well as RDS2 (French). The women’s semifinal is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 31, at 1 p.m. AST, with the gold-medal game at 7:30 p.m. AST.

Cornwall’s Jackson team out of Scotties, Birt wins B Final.

scotties-2012-women

The “B” final winner has been determined, and its down to three teams out of the four that began play Friday at the PEI Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Summerside. The Suzanne Birt rink doubled “A” final winner Kathy O’Rourke 8-4 to win the B final this evening. This means that the Monday championship round will take place, as there will be at least two teams advancing from the modified triple knockout round. Meanwhile, defending champion Kim Dolan remained alive down in the C event, eliminating Cornwall’s Lisa Jackson rink, the only team in the event not from the Charlottetown Curling Complex, in a close 8-7 game. Jackson attempted a tricky double raise and roll the shooter with her final shot to stay alive, but couldn’t pull it off.

End by end recap:

End 10 – 2 of 2: Jackson tries double raise & roll shooter into house but only gets 1. Final: Dolan 8 Jackson 7. Jackson out.
End 10 – 1 of 2: Birt runs O’Rourke team out of rocks. Final score Birt 8 O’Rourke 4. Birt wins the B final.
End 9: Dolan draws for 1. Dolan 8 Jackson 6. O’Rourke tries runback against 2, but misses. Birt 8 O’Rourke 4 coming home
End 8 Jackson draws for 2. Dolan 7 Jackson 6. O’Rourke team draws against 2, but a bit heavy. Steal of 1. Birt 6 O’Rourke 4
End 7 – 2 of 2: O’Rourke rink tries to draw for piece of button for 1. light. steal of 1. Birt 5 O’Rourke 4 after 7
End 7 1 of 2: Jackson draws vs 1. heavy. Gives up steal of 1. Dolan 7 Jackson 4
End 6: Jackson throws through for the blank. Dolan 6 Jackson 4 Birt draws against 4. Makes it. O’Rourke 4 Birt 4=
End 5: Dolan hits to roll out but sticks for 1. Dolan 6 Jackson 4 Birt’s draw to bite button is light. O’Rourke 4 Birt 3
End 4: Jackson gets 3 on a measure. Dolan 5 Jackson 4. O’Rourke team draws against 2 & makes it. Birt 3 O’Rourke 3 after 4
End 3: Dolan taps Jackson stone out for 4. Dolan 5 Jackson 1 Birt draws against 1, gets 1. Birt 3 O’Rourke 2.
End 2: Jackson tries to blank but sticks for 1, Dolan 1 Jackson 1. O’Rourke rink draws for 3 but get 2. Birt 2 O’Rourke 2
End 1: Dolan tries to blank but sticks for 1 to lead Jackson 1-0. Green draws against 2 but is light. 2-0 Birt over O’Rourke.

There are only two games left in the knockout round, with Dolan taking on O’Rourke at 10 am Sunday, and the winner playing Birt in the “C” final at 3 pm. If either O’Rourke or Birt win the “C” they will play in both Monday championship round games at 1 and 6 pm, and win the event if they take either, while their opponent would have to win both. If Dolan wins, the team who played in the most section finals would get the bye to the second championship round game.

The winning team from the Scotties Tournament of Hearts Provincial Women’s Championship will advance to the national 2015 Scotties in Moose Jaw SK, Feb. 14-22.

Meanwhile, the second of two rounds has been played at the 8 end Future Scotties round robin developmental event, with the young Sierra Clyke team from Crapaud and the Silver Fox pulling out a win over Cornwall’s Kristie Rogers foursome, tying the game with a four point 8th end, and then stealing the extra for an 8-7 win. The other afternoon game saw Cornwall’s Lauren Lenentine steal the 7th and 8th ends for a 7-4 victory over Lauren Moerike and her Charlottetown team. After two of the three rounds, Lenentine is 2-0, while Moerike and Clyke are 1-1 and Rogers is 0-2.

Cornwall’s Jackson facing elimination in 3 pm draw, while Birt and O’Rourke meet again in B final at PEI Scotties

scotties-2012-women

The 3 pm B final (game may be a few minutes late starting due to opening ceremonies) will feature the Kathy O’Rourke and Suzanne Birt rinks – the same teams as in yesterday’s “A” final at the PEI Scotties Tournament of Hearts provincial women’s curling championship at Summerside’s Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club.  Yesterday, O’Rourke took three points in the final end to win the A final by an 11-9 score. If O’Rourke wins again today in the B, she will get to play in both championship games on Monday, and win the title if she takes either game, while her opponent would have to win both games.

In this morning’s B semi-final, Birt was trailing 7-6 after nine ends, coming home without hammer against defending champion Kim Dolan, but tied the game at 7 with a stolen single in the tenth when a Dolan draw was a little light, and stole the extra as well when Dolan was left with an in-off hit and roll to the button, but didn’t make it, giving Birt an 8-7 win to advance to this afternoon’s B final against O’Rourke. The other 3 pm Scotties game will see Cornwall’s Lisa Jackson take on defending champ Dolan, with the loser eliminated from the competition.

Here is our end-by-end recap of this morning’s game:

Cornwall’s Veronica Smith rink loses opener vs. BC in extra end (CCA)

Nunavut continues to take strides at M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors

At the relatively tender age of 15 in a field filled with late teens, Sadie Pinksen still has to be considered a veteran at the 2015 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Curling Championships.

In her third trip to the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, Pinksen, a Grade 9 student at Inuksuk High School in Iqaluit, Nunavut, is still searching for her first career win, but based on a promising early outing on Saturday at the Corner Brook Civic Centre — an 11-3 loss to traditional powerhouse Ontario, skipped by Chelsea Brandwood of Hamilton — it seems just a matter of time before that historic first triumph.

“I think we’ve improved a lot technically and with our team dynamics,” said Pinksen, who bowed 17-3 to Alberta in her debut two years ago in Fort McMurray, Alta. “We’ve gotten a lot closer as a team, and a lot better on the ice. We’re more comfortable. Two years ago, we hadn’t played on arena ice before and we were all really nervous. Now, we’re a lot more confident.”

Pinksen is backed up here by third Christianne West (15), second Katie Chislett Manning (15) and lead Kaitlin MacDonald (16), the newcomer to the team — meaning, the Nunavut girls still have up to five years of eligibility at the Canadian Juniors.

“They have a lot of talent; unfortunately they don’t have competition (in Nunavut),” said coach Donalda Mattie, a native of Antigonish, N.S., who replaced former coach Lynn Kreviazuk due to the latter’s participation with Team Canada at the upcoming Winter Universiade in Spain. “They have a lot of work to do, but they do a lot of work on their own. I was pretty pleased with the way they played the game today; they made a lot of good shots. And I expect they’ll get better as the week goes on. The attitude is very positive; Lynn has done a lot of great work with the team.”

That is evident in watching the constantly smiling Pinksen handle herself, both on and off the ice.

“I think we didn’t really know what to expect two years ago. It really was overwhelming,” she conceded. “Now, we know what the other curlers are like. It’s still a learning experience, but we’re getting more competitive now than we were two years ago.”

In other Draw 1 women’s play on Saturday, defending champ and reigning world junior champ Kelsey Rocque (with a new lineup in front of her) of Alberta opened with a 14-5 win over the Yukon’s Bailey Horte; 2013 Canadian champ Corryn Brown and her B.C. team needed an extra end to shade Prince Edward Island’s Veronica Smith 9-8; Manitoba’s Beth Peterson scored three in the ninth end en route to an 8-7 triumph over Northern Ontario’s Krysta Burns; and 2014 bronze-medallist Mary Fay of Nova Scotia rolled to an 8-3 victory over Carina McKay-Saturnino of the Northwest Territories.

In men’s play, Quebec’s Felix Asselin put a huge six on the scoreboard in the eighth end in a 9-6 win over B.C.’s Paul Henderson; Ontario’s Mac Calwell beat Nunavut’s Kane Komaksuitiksak 16-3; and Nova Scotia’s Matthew Manuel stole a seventh-end deuce to beat Newfoundland/Labrador’s Greg Smith 8-2.

Action at the 2015 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors continues Saturday with draws at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. (All times AST).

Round-robin games are taking place at both the Corner Brook Civic Centre and the Corner Brook Curling Club.

AST with the gold-medal game at 7:30 p.m. AST.

Cornwall’s Veronica Smith rink begins play this morning at the Canadian Juniors

First draws are at 10 NT (9:30 AT) on Saturday morning at the Corner Brook Civic Centre and the Corner Book Curling Club, as the 2015 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors return to Newfoundland and Labrador for the first time in three decades, at which time they hosted the junior men’s (separate events back then), event, won by Alberta’s Kevin Martin. As was the case two years ago, PEI will be represented by teams skipped by Smiths – Tyler and Veronica. The Smiths are not related.

Tyler Smith, who is competing in both his second Canada Games, and his second Canadian Juniors this year, hails from the Crapaud area, but the other curlers on his Crapaud/Montague rink are from the Montague Curling Club – third Brooks Roche, second Dylan Lowery, and lead Ryan Lowery. The team is coached by Tyler’s father, Kevin Smith.

With 14 teams in each gender (representing each of the 10 provinces in addition to Northern Ontario, the Northwest Territories, Yukon and Nunavut), the field is split into two seven-team pools, with seeding based on win-loss records at the 2014 Canadian Juniors in Liverpool, N.S. Teams will play a round robin within their pool, leading to a championship pool beginning on Wednesday, which will then lead to the weekend playoffs. Teams that don’t qualify for the championship pool will play a seeding pool to determine rankings for the 2016 Canadian Juniors in Stratford Ontario. Meantime, non-playoff teams will participate in a mixed doubles competition.

The men’s and women’s playoffs will be televised by the TSN network as well as RDS2 (French). The women’s semifinal is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 31, at 1:30 p.m. NST/1 p.m. AST, with the gold-medal game at 8 p.m. NST/7:30 p.m. AST.

Canada has won a leading 17 world junior men’s titles since 1975 and eight women’s crowns (Scotland leads with nine) since 1988. The last Canadian teams to win world junior titles were skipped by Saskatchewan’s Marliese Miller in 2003 in Flims, Switzerland, and by Alberta’s Brendan Bottcher in 2012 in Östersund, Sweden.

O’Rourke wins A final, Cornwall’s Jackson rink loses openers at PEI Scotties

scotties-2012-women

There were two very close games Friday evening at the PEI Scotties Tournament of Hearts Provincial Women’s Curling Championships at the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club in Summerside. In the “A” section final of the four team modified triple knockout round, it was a battle between Summerside natives – Suzanne Birt and Kathy O’Rourke, both from the Charlottetown Curling Complex, with O’Rourke coming from behind, with her fourth stone thrower Robyn Green making a double to count three in the final end for an 11-9 win. O’Rourke had a 5-1 lead in the game after three ends, but Birt took five points in the next two ends to lead 6-5 at the fifth end break. The teams traded singles in six and seven to maintain Birt’s one point lead, but Green hits & sticks for 2 in end eight to give O’Rourke an 8-7 lead. Green’s former skip Birt came back with her own hit and stick for two to lead 9-8 coming home without the hammer, but the three pointer by Green in the final end gave O’Rourke the win.

In the other game, defending champion Kim Dolan from the Charlottetown Curling Complex edged Lisa Jackson from the Cornwall Curling Club 9-8. Jackson was trailing Dolan 9-6 coming home, and had a chance to score three for the tie, but her rock jammed, and she took two, for her second loss in the championship.

Winning the A final gave O’Rourke a spot in the two game championship round on Monday. If she wins all three section finals, she will win the event without a championship game. If a team wins two sections, they will play in both championship games on Monday, and win the championship if they take either, while their opponent would have to win both.

Saturday at 10 am Dolan faces Birt, with the winner playing O’Rourke at 3 pm in the B final, and the loser taking on Jackson. Also on Saturday at 10 and 3 are the first games in the round robin Future Scotties developmental event, for female curlers from the Pepsi Juniors who might one day go on to the Scotties.

Here’s the 10 am Saturday Future Scotties draw:

Lauren Lenentine (Cornwall) vs Sierra Clyke (Crapaud/Silver Fox)

Lauren Moerike (Ch’town) vs Kristie Rogers (Cornwall)

Sunday draws are also at 10 and 3, with the two game championship round (if needed) going at 1 and 6 pm.

Game Story for this evening’s games:

64 Newcomers slated for Sunday night – volunteers needed!

We’ve had an overwhelming response to our Sunday night sessions with the PEI Newcomers to Canada Assoc. We’re capping this weekend’s session,, from 6-8 pm, at two shifts of 32 Newcomers for an hour each, and are looking into booking another week, as they had over 90 who wanted to curl this Sunday, so there’s around 30 on the waiting list!

We would appreciate it very much if our previous volunteers, if available, could be in attendance this Sunday. Also, if there is anyone else who could help out on the ice, please come along too!

NS wheelchair/stick curler George Horning, here for the Cdn. Stick Ch’ships in 2013, passes away

The wheelchair curling family lost a valued member on January 20th.  George Horning was sixty two. He was the reigning 2014 Nova Scotia Wheelchair Curling Champion and played out of Lakeshore Curling Club in Nova Scotia. Horning moved to Nova Scotia in 2012 after he retired. A chance phone call brought him to throw a few rocks at Lakeshore while traveling and he decided to spend his retired life there.

Cornwall stick curlers will remember George from the Canadian Stick Curling Championships at our Club in April 2013, where he curled with another wheelchair curler, Lauchie Rutt.

George Horning was born in Whitehorse YT  and lived most of his life in Winnipeg. He represented Manitoba at the Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championships on a number of occasions. He won a gold medal in 2011 in Edmonton while playing for Manitoba.

George found he had cancer shortly before the 2014 Nova Scotia Provincial Wheelchair Playdowns where he skipped a team. He insisted on playing and skipped his team to the Championship. He entered radiation therapy immediately following the win. Despite failing health he, again, insisted on playing in the 2014 Canadian National Championship in Montreal. He entered chemotherapy upon his return and had been unable to play this season.

He will be missed by his special friend Mary Commo; his relatives and team mates.

Cornwall’s Veronica Smith rink begins play Saturday at the Canadian Juniors

Veronica Smith also comes from the Crapaud area, but curls out of the Cornwall Curling Club, with her team of third stone Chloé McCloskey, Veronica’s sister Sabrina Smith at second, and  lead Katie Fullerton. The team is coached by Bill Hope.

It’s the Veronica Smith team’s third consecutive trip to the Canadian Juniors, and Veronica’s last, as she will be aged out next season, although her teammates will still be Junior age. The Smith rink have curled together for 11 seasons.

PEI women open play against BC at 9:30 AT on Saturday, while the men take to the ice against Saskatchewan at 2 pm AT. Both teams are on the ice again at 7 pm. with PEI men facing the Yukon Territories and the women taking on the Newfoundland and Labrador team.

The website for the Canadian Juniors is www.curling.ca/2015juniors-en

TSN will provide live coverage of the women’s and men’s finals, at 1 and 7:30 pm, respectively, on Sunday Feb. 1st.

The men’s and women’s champions in Corner Brook will represent Canada at the 2015 World Junior Men’s and Women’s Championships, February 28 to March 8 in Tallinn Estonia.

Scotties starts Fri., Future Scotties begins Sat. in S’Side. Cornwall has 1 Scotties, 2 Future Scotties teams entered

STOHThe PEI Scotties Tournament of Hearts Provincial Women’s Championship, and the Future Scotties developmental event for Junior (Under 21) women’s teams, both sponsored by Kruger Products, take place this weekend (January 23-26 2015) at the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club in Summerside, with the Scotties starting Friday afternoon, and the Future Scotties getting underway on Saturday.

Kruger Products

The Kim Dolan rink from Charlottetown are last year’s PEI Scotties champs.

Four Scotties and an equal number of Future Scotties teams are taking part. Teams are seeded in the Scotties draw based on results at designated events this season.

The Scotties teams will play a modified triple knockout format, beginning at 2 pm on Friday January 23, advancing section winners to a two game championship round on Monday, January 26 at 1 and 6 PM. With the modified format, teams who win one of the triple knockout sections also drop down to compete in lower sections. In the event that a team wins all three sections, they will be declared the Scotties champs, and the Monday games will not be played. If a team wins any two sections, they will have a “double life” in the Monday championship round, and take the championship if they win either, while their opponent must win both. If there are three separate winners, the team who played in the most qualifying games has a bye to the second game. If tied in games played, the team who qualified earliest will get the bye. Games are ten ends.

The Future Scotties is a developmental event for junior curlers who may one day compete in the Scotties, and takes place on the same weekend and at the same venue. Competitors from the Pepsi Junior Women’s Championship are invited to attend. Future event participants will be paired up with a Scotties team, invited to the banquet and the opening ceremonies, and will play a three game round robin competition on Saturday and Sunday during the event. Games are eight ends, and go Saturday at 10 am and 3 pm, and Sunday at 10 am.

Draw times are Friday at 2 and 7 pm, Saturday and Sunday at 10 am and 3 pm, with opening ceremonies at 2:15 pm Saturday, and Monday (if needed) at 1 and 6 PM.

Live Curlcast results will be available at curlatlantic.com/scoreboard (there are separate results sites for the Scotties, and the Future Scotties, as the events have different numbers of ends).

There will be no admission charge to attend the event.

Mel Bernard rink wins PEI Masters Men’s Championship, Shirley Berry repeats as women’s champ

The Mel Bernard rink from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside are the 2015 Curl PEI Provincial Masters men’s curling champions, sweeping all three sections of the modified triple knockout draw in the event, taking place at the Cornwall Curling Club, making a championship round, which had been scheduled for Tuesday, unnecessary. They edged the Clair Sweet team from the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary by a 6-5 score this afternoon in the “C” final of the event, stealing the final end when Sweet’s last shot, a draw to the four foot, was light.

Bernard is curling with three members of last year’s winning team – third Lou Nowlan, second Earle Proude, and lead Alan Montgomery. Last year’s skip, Ted MacFadyen, was unable to compete due to a prior commitment, so Bernard stepped in as skip this year. The rink also recently won the recent provincial Legion curling championships. Nowlan has now won the Masters event 10 times.

The runner-up Sweet team includes third Bob Matheson, second Muncey Harris, and lead Wayne Arsenault.

Sweet stole the first end in the final game, with the teams trading singles in the next two ends, and blanking the 4th, to give Sweet a 2-1 lead after four ends. Bernard grabbed a 3-2 lead with a deuce in five, but Sweet came back with a hit for three to lead 5-3.  Bernard then tied the game with a draw for two, but Sweet had the last rock advantage coming home. In the final end, Sweet was lying one or two and then put up a guard with his first shot. Bernard tried an “in-off” shot off his second stone and it worked, rolling to the four foot behind cover. Bernard then put up a guard to prevent a raise on one side, leaving Sweet with a draw to the four foot on the other side, which came up light, giving the win to the Bernard foursome.

Meanwhile, the  Shirley Berry rink from the Cornwall and Charlottetown curling clubs are repeat Curl PEI Masters women’s champs, winning their first three games of their best of five championship against the Diane MacKay rink, taking the title with a 9-1 score in this morning’s game at the Cornwall Curling Club. MacKay curls out of the host club, and was runner-up last year as well. Berry said that she tried to keep the game simple, minimizing rocks in play, and it worked out for her. The game was tied 1-all after three ends, but Berry pulled ahead with a stolen deuce in the fourth, and then put the game out of reach for the MacKay squad by stealing four points in the fifth end.

Biagé along with Matt Smith of Charlottetown, Paul Arsenault of Cornwall, and Bob Maynard of the Silver Fox are still alive in the “must win” C event, and play at 9 am, with Smith taking on Biagé and Arsenault facing Maynard. The winners of the three sections will advance to the championship round on Tuesday.

The men’s and women’s winners and runners-up (which will include both women’s teams this year) will earn the right to compete in the Maritime Masters Championships. Dates and venue for this event have not yet been announced. The winning teams, or the highest-finishing men’s and women’s rinks that choose to attend, are invited to participate in the 2015 NVA Hotel Divison Canadian Masters Championships, March 30 to Apr. 5 at the Whitehorse Curling Club in the Yukon.

End by end results from the Provincial Masters will be available at curlatlantic.com/scoreboard/

There is no admission charge to watch the Masters at the Cornwall Curling Club.
