The Curl PEI Provincial Masters Curling Championships, for curlers age 60 and over, got underway Friday with two men’s draws. Four out of the ten men’s teams are still unbeaten after opening day action – one from the host Cornwall Curling Club, one from the Maple Leaf club in O’Leary, and two from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside. Play continues on Saturday with draws at 9 am, and 12:30 and 4 pm. All games are eight ends in this event.

On Friday, Cornwall’s Ray Biagé foursome edged Charlottetown’s Matt Smith rink 7-6 in their opener, while O’Leary’s Clair Sweet got off to a fast start with a triple in his first end and a stolen deuce in the second against Cornwall’s Paul Arsenault.. Ends three through six saw each team pick up two pojnts, and a four point seventh end resulted in a 11-2 win for Sweet.

The Mel Bernard rink, recent PEI Legion champs, and three-quarters of last year’s Masters championship team (Bernard is replacing last year’s skip, Ted MacFadyen) joined the undefeated ranks by winning his afternoon opener by stealing a deuce in an extra end, against the Bill Hope rink from Charlottetown and Cornwall. Hope beat Cornwall’s Barry Craswell team, who are the only team in the event to have four curlers who use a delivery stick, by a 6-5 score in the morning draw. Craswell, helped out by a 5 point seventh end. rebounded with an exciting 11-10 extra-end win over clubmate Paul Arsenault in the afternoon draw.
The Dale Cannon rink from the Silver Fox remained in the “A” section of the modified triple-knockout draw by winning both their Friday games, doubling clubmate Louis Walsh 6-3 in the morning draw, and beating another Summerside rink, skipped by Bob Maynard, 7-2 in the afternoon.
Cannon now takes on Biagé, with Bernard facing Sweet, in “A” semi-final action Saturday at 12:30, PM, with the winners advancing to the “A” final at 9 AM on Sunday.
Down in the “B” event, Bill Hope takes on Louis Walsh and Bob Maynard plays Barry Craswell at 9 am on Saturday.
Matt Smith from Charlottetown and Paul Arsenault of Cornwall, who both lost their two opening day games, are now in the “must win” C event, and play on Saturday at 4 pm against teams to be determined earlier in the day.
The men’s modified Triple Knockout round continues through Monday, qualifying teams for a two game championship round on Tuesday. If one team wins all three of the modified triple knockout sections, the championship round will not be required. If a team wins two of the three sections, they will have a “double life” in the championship round, winning the event if they take either game, while their opponent would have to win both. If there are three separate winners, the team who played in the most qualifying teams will receive a bye to the second game. If teams are tied in qualifying games played, the team who qualified first gets the bye.
Play in the two team best of five Masters Women’s Championship gets underway on Saturday, with the Cornwall and Charlottetown rink skipped by last year’s winner Shirley Berry facing last year’s runners-up, skipped by Diane MacKay from the host club, playing their first two games in the 9 am and 12:30 PM draws.
The men’s and women’s winners and runners-up (which will include both women’s teams this year) will earn the right to compete in the Maritime Masters Championships. Dates and venue for this event have not yet been announced. The winning teams, or the highest-finishing men’s and women’s rinks that choose to attend, are invited to participate in the 2015 NVA Hotel Divison Canadian Masters Championships, March 30 to Apr. 5 at the Whitehorse Curling Club in the Yukon.

The Provincial Masters Curling Championship takes place from Friday January 16 through Tuesday January 20 here at the Cornwall Curling Club. Note that (subject to exceptions below) there will be no morning “drop-in” or afternoon stick curling on January 16, 19, and 20, and no Sunday practice time or junior curling on January 18. Junior team practices can go as scheduled on the Friday, Monday, and Tuesday. Evening draws will not be affected.
Exceptions:
In the event that the same team wins all three sections of the Men’s modified triple knockout draw, there WILL be daytime morning and stick curling on Tuesday the 20th, as the two game Masters championship round would not be needed.
In the event that a Men’s team wins two triple knockout sections, and then wins the 9 am Tuesday game, the 1 pm Tuesday draw would not be needed, and the ice would be available for stick curling on Tuesday afternoon.
If one of the exceptions applies, a note will be sent out on CornwallCurling.com that a particular draw is on.
The signup sheet is up now at the Club for our annual Kenmac Energy Funspiel, which takes place the evening of Friday January 30, and all day Saturday the 31st. Last year’s event had a full complement of 24 teams (we originally planned for 16) with the Paul Neima rink coming out as the winners. Signup now and avoid missing out!
The entry fee is $30 per person with snacks Friday night and lunch and dinner provided on Saturday. There will be music Friday night for anyone who would like to stay around after their game, and trivia and games on Saturday. Sign up is by team or single entry. Teams must be mixed with skip and mate of opposite sex ( a team could have three men or three women as long as skip and mate are different sex). The event is open to both members and non-members, experienced curlers and those new to the game. In this spirit, the Club encourages those assembling teams to invite new curlers to join them. All teams will play three six-end games, with event winners determined by a points system.
The Club would like to thank Kenmac Energy for their continued support of this great event!

Approximately 50 people of all ages, who are both new to Canada and new to one of Canada’s most popular winter sports, took to the ice at the Cornwall Curling Club this evening for an introduction to “the roaring game”. The event, organized by the Club and the PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada, (PEIANC) continues for the next two Sunday evenings.
Craig Mackie photo: Cornwall Curling Club Board of Directors member Paula Ling helps a young “newcomer” deliver a rock
Both PEIANC Executive Director (and Cornwall club member) Craig Mackie and Joe Byrne, their Community Connections Supervisor, along with Cornwall Curling Club President Frank Martin, helped out with the event, all saying that said they were very pleased with both the turnout and the event. The smiles on the curlers’ faces, and the enthusiasm they showed for the sport all indicated that the introduction to curling was a success.
Thanks to everyone at the Club who helped with on-ice instruction, including Club President Frank Martin, Past President Paul Neima, Board Members Carlene Peters, Paula Ling, and Joe MacKinnon, volunteer instructors Bryan Sutherland, Paul Field, Vernon Chowan, and Mark MacDonald, along with Debby Sigsworth for serving the hot chocolate and cookies, and Jeff Taylor for cleaning the ice.
If other newcomers would like to attend on either January 18 (7-9 PM), or the 25th (6-8 PM), they are asked to get in touch with Joe Byrne at 902-628-6009 x224 or email joeb@peianc.com.

The 10th annual George’s Deck and Recovery Under 13 Bonspiel was held today at the Montague Curling Club, with 12 teams taking part. The first and second place teams were from the Cornwall Curling Club, while a team from the host Montague club took third place honours. The event, which is free to participate in, and includes a free lunch, was started a decade ago by George Branton, owner of George’s Deck and Recovery, when his grandson, who had recently taken up the sport at age 11, told him that more events were needed for younger curlers.

The Cornwall Curling Club rink of Veronica Smith, Chloé McCloskey, Sabrina Smith, and Katie Fullerton, with Coach Bill Hope, became three-time winners of the Pepsi Provincial Junior Women’s Curling Championship in late December.
Going undefeated in this year’s event, the Smith team will now advance to the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, January 24 – February 1, 2015 in Cornerbrook NL.
This will be Veronica’s final trip to the Junior Nationals, as she will be out of the age category next year, but her three teammates will still be eligible.
The Score! award is presented monthly by Sport PEI in partnership with Score! Sport Charlottetown.
Volunteer signup sheets are now up at the Club, seeking help for the Sunday evening Newcomers instruction, along with food preparation and serving, 50X50 selling, and Curlcast scorekeeping, all for the Provincial Masters Curling Championships, January 16-20. If you can help out, please do! Relying on volunteers for special events helps keep our dues low! Volunteering is fun, and makes you feel good, too!
Get ready for our Club’s annual Kenmac Energy Funspiel, which takes place the evening of Friday January 30, and all day Saturday the 31st. A signup sheet should be up by the weekend. Last year’s event had a full complement of 24 teams (we originally planned for 16) with the Paul Neima rink coming out as the winners. Note that this is a mixed event, with skip and mate having to be of opposite sex (note that you can have three men or three women on a team, as long as there is one member of the opposite sex in the skip or mate position). This event is open to all curlers, including non-members and members of other clubs. Team entry, or single entry and you will be put on a team.

The Cornwall Curling Club is hosting the Provincial Masters Curling Championship, with men’s and women’s divisions for curlers age 60 and over, beginning a week from this Friday, on January 16. The event was formerly held during weekday mornings and afternoons, but was moved this year to include the weekend, with weekday draws on the Friday and the following Monday and Tuesday at 9 am and 1 pm. The Saturday and Sunday weekend draws go at 9 am, and 12:30 and 4 pm. Because of this event, there will be no morning “drop-in” or afternoon stick curling on January 16, 19, and 20, and no Sunday practice time or junior curling on January 18. Junior team practices can go as scheduled on the Friday, Monday, and Tuesday. Evening draws would not be affected.
Here’s a look at the event schedule. Women’s games begin with “W”. Some games may not be needed, depending on outcome of previous games.
There are 10 men’s and two women’s teams entered, with four of the men’s, and both of the women’s rinks coming, at least in part, from the host club. Here are the entries:

Defending champs are the Shirley Berry rink from Cornwall and Summerside’s Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club, and the Ted MacFadyen team from the Fox. MacFadyen is not back this year, but his three teammates are, skipped by Mel Bernard. The men’s and women’s winners and runners-up (which will mean both women’s teams this year) will earn the right to compete in the Maritime Masters Championships (still haven’t found out when and where it is). The winning teams, or the highest-finishing men’s and women’s rinks that choose to attend, are invited to participate in the 2015 NVA Hotel Divison Canadian Masters Championships, March 30 to Apr. 5 at the Whitehorse Curling Club in the Yukon.
The men’s teams will play a “modified” triple knockout, advancing teams to a two game championship round on Tuesday the 20th. In the modified format, teams who qualify in the A or B sections of the triple knockout also drop down to subsequent sections, so it’s possible that a team could win all three sections. If that happens, the championship round will not be needed, and they will be declared the champion. If a team wins two sections, they will have a “double life” in the championship round, earning berths in both games, and winning the event if they take either, while their opponent would have to win both games. If there are three separate winners, the team that played in the most section finals advances to the second game, with the other two teams playing off in the semi-final. If there is a tie in the number of qualifier games they played in, the team who qualified first gets the bye to the championship final.
The women’s draw is much simpler – the two teams play a best three out of five series.
Here’s a look at the men’s draw. The teams have not yet been assigned to the draw slots:
Event website: peicurling.com/masters20142015/
Volunteers required: Games are eight ends. Masters games are NOT timed, so we will not need to provide any timers. We will, however, need a volunteer at each draw to sell 50X50 tickets at the door and around the Club. It may only be feasible to have a 50X50 at the draws that use all four sheets, so we’ll probably make a decision on the smaller draws depending on how many are there. In the past, many of the tickets have been bought by the players themselves, so we’ll try to have someone there early to sell them.
We’ll also need someone to update the scores after each end with our laptop and the CCA’s Curlcast scoring system (instructions will be provided). We also plan to sell food during the event, so volunteers (usually from the daytime curlers) will be needed to plan, prepare, and serve the meals (soup, chili, sandwiches, etc.). We would need lunch ready by 11:30am on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with sandwiches for sale from the bar after that. We probably don’t need lunch on the Monday or Tuesday due to the limited number of teams playing (to be decided). We would provide complimentary coffee before the morning draw, and muffins would be provided, perhaps for a Loonie, on the honour system (does anyone work for a company that wants to donate some donuts??).
This event does not have a banquet or opening ceremonies. The ice crew will likely require sweepers at the fourth end break.
The signup sheets – one for food, one for 50X50 and scoring, are now up.
I would appreciate your suggestions, corrections, and feedback!
– Derek MacEwen, 2015 Masters Ch’ship Coordinator

Two out of three ain’t bad.
Tyler Smith can attest after skipping his rink to its second Pepsi provincial junior men’s curling championship in three years with an 11-3 victory over the Matthew MacLean foursome on Wednesday in Charlottetown.
Guardian photo – Tyler Smith rink
Smith led 4-1 in a close contest after four ends at the Charlottetown Curling Complex, but his crew stole a three-spot in the fifth end and never looked back.
Also headed to the nationals later this month in Cornerbrook is the Veronica Smith rink from the Cornwall Curling Club after a 6-3 victory over the Jane DiCarlo foursome from the Charlottetown Curling Complex on Tuesday night.
It’s Smith’s third straight provincial crown and third straight trip to the nationals, and she appreciated her group’s effort.
“Phenomenal. The girls came into every game prepared. Focused and prepared for what we had to do to get out of this province,” Smith said.
It’s also the last year for the 20-year-old Smith to skip her rink as she ages-out of junior next year.
The Tyler Smith rink from the Montague and Crapaud curling clubs beat the Matthew MacLean foursome from the Cornwall and Maple Leaf curling clubs by an 11-3 score this morning to capture the Pepsi Provincial Men’s Curling Championship at the Charlottetown Curling Complex. Along with the women’s winners, the Veronica Smith (no relation) rink, they now advance to the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, January 24 – February 1, 2015 in Cornerbrook NL. It’s the second provincial juniors title for Tyler Smith, who, playing with a different team, also won the event in January 2013. This year’s rink are also competing in the Canada Games in Prince George BC in February.

Smith, who won two sections of the modified triple knockout round, had two chances to win the championship today against the MacLean foursome, who would have had to win both games, but the rink only needed the first game, getting on the scoreboard with a deuce in the first end, MacLean was kept to a single in the second, with Smith taking singles in the next two ends, and stealing a triple to take a commanding 7-1 lead after five ends. MacLean picked up a single in end six, and stole another in the seventh to make it 7-3, but a four-pointer from Smith in eight brought the game to handshakes.
Other members of the Smith foursome are third Brooks Roche, second Dylan Lowery, and lead Ryan Lowery. They are coached by Tyler’s father, Kevin Smith. Rounding out the runner-up MacLean team are Alan and Jordan MacLean at third and second, respectively, and lead Noah O’Connor, with coach Glen MacLean.

The Cornwall Curling Club rink of Veronica Smith, Chloé McCloskey, Sabrina Smith, and Katie Fullerton, with coach Bill Hope, are now three-time winners of the Pepsi Provincial Junior Women’s Curling Championship, going undefeated in this year’s event, and beating the Jane DiCarlo team from the host Charlottetown Curling Complex by a 6-3 score in the C event final this evening. As the Smith team won all three section finals of the modified triple knockout round, all against DiCarlo, the two game championship round on Wednesday is not required, and the Smith team will now advance to the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, January 24 – February 1, 2015 in Cornerbrook NL.

This will be Veronica’s final trip to the Junior Nationals, as she will be out of the age category next year, but her three teammates will still be eligible. Other members of the runner-up DiCarlo foursome are Jessica Watts, Emily Gray, and Megan Wile, with alternate Robyn Wile, and coach Lori Robinson.

Meanwhile, Tyler Smith and his rink from the Montague and Crapaud curling clubs doubled the Alex MacFadyen foursome from Summerside’s Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club by an 8-4 score tonight to capture the men’s C event. Smith was ahead 4-3 after five ends, and then stole singles in the next two ends and recorded a deuce in the ninth en route to the win. The Smith rink also won the B section of the modified triple knockout, and will advance to both championship round games on Wednesday, at 9 am and 2 pm, and will win the championship if they take either game. The other team to advance to the championship round, the A section winning Matthew MacLean foursome from the Cornwall Curling Club and O’Leary’s Maple Leaf club must win both games tomorrow in order to win the championship.
Rounding out the Smith team, who are PEI’s Canada Games men’s representatives in February, are Brooks Roche, Dylan Lowery, and Ryan Lowery, with coach Kevin Smith. Completing the MacLean rink are Alan and Jordan MacLean, along with Noah O’Connor and coach Glen MacLean.

The 7 pm “C” event finals are set at the Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championships, following Tuesday afternoon play at the Charlottetown Curling Complex.

Playing in the women’s “C” event final are Cornwall’s Veronica Smith rink, who are the two-time defending champions, and have already won the A and B sections of the modified triple knockout, and Charlottetown’s Jane DiCarlo team, who came from behind with stolen triples in the eighth and ninth end this afternoon to defeat the Jenny McLean rink from Cornwall by a 9-4 score. A win by Smith in tonight’s game would give her the championship, and the two game women’s championship round at 9 am and 2 pm on Wednesday would not be needed. If DiCarlo wins, she have to win both championship round games on Wednesday, while Smith would take the championship if she wins either game.
Photo (L-R): Alex MacFadyen, Matthew MacDonald, Parker MacFadyen
Alex MacFadyen and his team from Summerside’s Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club stole a pair of deuces in ends seven and eight in a 9-4 win over the Matthew MacLean rink from the Cornwall and Maple Leaf curling clubs this afternoon, to advance to the 7 pm C event final against Tyler Smith from the Crapaud and Montague curling clubs. Smith won the B event on Monday, while MacLean took the A event on Sunday.
If Smith wins tonight, he would play in both championship games on Wednesday, and win the event if he takes either game, while his opponent, MacLean, would have to win both games. If MacFadyen wins tonight, he would play MacLean in the morning game, with the winner facing Smith at 2 pm (the rules specify that the team who played in the most section qualifier games would have the bye to the second game, and Smith was in all three qualifiers).
The men’s and women’s winners advance to the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, January 24 – February 1, 2015 in Cornerbrook NL.

The B qualifiers have now been determined following Monday evening play at the Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championships at the Charlottetown Curling Complex, with two-time defending champion Veronica Smith from the Cornwall Curling Club winning the women’s B event, and Tyler Smith (no relation) and his Crapaud and Montague rink winning the men’s.
Veronica Smith stole four points in the sixth end on the way to an 8-6 win over Charlottetown’s Jane DiCarlo rink in the women’s B qualifier. Smith had previously won the A section of the modified triple knockout, and is now just one win away from taking the championship. If Smith also wins the C qualifier at 7 pm Tuesday, she would immediately be declared the champion and the Wednesday championship round would not be needed. If she doesn’t win that game, she will take the championship if she wins either game on Wednesday, while the winner of the C event would have to win both games.

Tyler Smith won the men’s B event with a 7-5 come-from-behind win over Matthew MacLean and his rink from the Cornwall and Maple Leaf clubs. Smith was trailing 5-4 after eight ends, after MacLean stole singles in ends three through five, but stole a deuce in the 9th and a single in the final end for the win. MacLean had previously won the A event.

Two more teams were eliminated from play this evening, with Alex MacFadyen from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside knocking out Cornwall’s Donald DeWolfe rink with an 11-5 victory, in a game that ended early when MacFadyen picked up five points in the eighth end. On the women’s side, Cornwall’s Jenny McLean stayed alive with a 9-1 win over Charlottetown’s Lauren Moerike rink in six ends.
In Tuesday “C” semi-final play at 2 pm, Matthew MacLean takes on Alex MacFadyen, and Jenny McLean faces Jane DiCarlo, with the winners playing Tyler and Veronica Smith, respectively, in the C qualifier game at 7 pm.
The two game championship round is scheduled for Wednesday at 9 am and 2 pm.

Two teams — the Lauren Lenentine rink from Cornwall and the Leslie Noye foursome from the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton, were eliminated from play this afternoon, with losses in the C flight, to Cornwall’s Jenny McLean and Alex MacFadyen from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club, respectively.
Besides the Smith/DiCarlo and Smith/MacLean games tonight, down in the “must win” C flight, MacFadyen and DeWolfe square off in the men’s section, while McLean takes on Charlottetown’s Lauren Moerike team in the women’s. The C semis go Tuesday at 2 pm, with the C qualifers following at 7.

There were some close games in the Sunday evening draw at the Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championships at the Charlottetown Curling Complex. Earlier in the day, the first of three qualifying spots for Wednesday’s championship round was determined, with Matthew MacLean and his Cornwall/Maple Leaf rink winning the Men’s A qualifier, and two-time defending Veronica Smith taking the Women’s.

On Sunday evening in B section play, Cornwall’s Donald DeWolfe rink was leading 4-3 coming home without last rock advantage in his game against Alex MacFadyen from the Silver Fox, but pulled off a steal of five points in the last end for a 9-3 win to advance to the B semi-final against A qualifier runner-up Tyler Smith from Crapaud and Montague. The winner of that game, at 2 pm Monday, faces Matthew MacLean in the B qualifier game at 7 pm Monday.
Photo: Lauren Moerike delivers a rock
In the women’s B section, Lauren Moerike from the host club stole 4 in the last end to defeat Lauren Lenentine 11-7 to go to the B semi at 2 pm Monday against clubmate Jane DiCarlo, who was runner-up to Veronica Smith in the A qualifier. The winner of the B semi takes on Smith at 7 pm Monday in the B qualifier.
Two teams have now been eliminated from play in the “must-win” C flight, after suffering their third loss, with Cornwall’s Devin Schut losing 11-5 to Alberton’s Leslie Noye, and Kaleigh Mackay and her Crapaud and Montague team losing 7-6 in an extra end to Cornwall’s Jenny McLean. McLean takes on Lenentine, while Noye faces MacFadyen at 2 pm on Monday, with the losers going home and the winners advancing to the 7 pm draw. The C semi goes Tuesday at 2 pm with the C qualifier following at 7 pm.
The two game championship round goes Wednesday at 9 am and, if needed, 2 pm. If either Matthew MacLean of Veronica Smith wins all three sections of the modified triple knockout, their championship round won’t be required.
6 men’s and 6 women’s teams are in the Pepsi Juniors. The winning men’s and women’s rinks advance to the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, January 24 – February 1, 2015 in Cornerbrook NL.
The two-time defending champion Veronica Smith rink from the Cornwall Curling Club, and the Matthew MacLean foursome from the Cornwall and Maple Leaf curling clubs won the “A” divison qualifiers today at the Pepsi Provincial Juniors Curling Championships at the Charlottetown Curling Complex, giving them berths in the two game championship round on Wednesday.

MacLean stole a single point in the extra end to win his qualifier game against Canada Games contender Tyler Smith and his Crapaud and Montague team by a 9-8 score, while Veronica Smith, trailing 5-4 coming home in her game against Jane DiCarlo from the Charlottetown Curling Complex, picked up a triple in the 10th end for a 7-5 win. In the modified triple knockout format of this event, the A qualifiers remain in the draw, and have the opportunity to also win the B and/or C divisions. If either MacLean or Smith win all three sections, they will be declared the champions without the championship round. If a team wins two of the three sections, they will play in both championship round games, and take the championship if they win either, while their opponent would have to win both games. If there are three separate winners, the team who plays in the most qualifying games gets the bye to the second game.
Matthew MacLean and Veronica Smith receive berths in the B finals, at 7 pm Monday, and will face the winners of the B semi-finals at 2 pm Monday. The men’s B semi will be between Tyler Smith and the winner of the 7 pm Sunday game between the Alex MacFadyen team from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside, and Cornwall’s Donald DeWolfe team. The women’s B semi sees DiCarlo take on the winner of the 7 pm Sunday contest between Lauren Lenentine of Cornwall and Lauren Moerike of Charlottetown.
Going into the 7 pm Sunday draw, two men’s rinks, skipped by Devin Schut of Cornwall and Leslie Noye of the Western Community Curling Club have two losses, and are down in the must-win C division, while the Jenny McLean rink from Cornwall and the Kaleigh Mackay team from Crapaud and Montague are in the same situation on the women’s side.
The C semi-finals are 2 pm on Tuesday with the C qualifier games following at 7. The championship round, if needed, goes Monday at 9 am, and, if necessary, 2 pm. 6 men’s and 6 women’s teams are in the Pepsi Juniors. The winning men’s and women’s rinks advance to the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, January 24 – February 1, 2015 in Cornerbrook NL.

Day one is over at the Pepsi Provincial Junior (Under 21) Curling Championships at the Charlottetown Curling Complex, with two draws played, and all 12 teams (6 women’s, 6 men’s) seeing action. The first of three qualifying games for the championship round is now set in both the men’s and women’s divisons, with the men’s A qualifier going at 9 am Sunday, and the women’s following at 2 pm.
The men’s A qualifier will see Tyler Smith and his Crapaud/Montague team take on the Matthew MacLean rink from the Cornwall Curling Club and the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary, while two-time defending champion Veronica Smith and her Cornwall team faces the host club’s Jane DiCarlo foursome in the women’s A qualifier.
Canada Games representative Tyler Smith won his opener 12-2 in 7 ends over Cornwall’s Devin Schut rink, and beat the Donald DeWolfe team, also from Cornwall, 11-2 in 8 ends in his second game. MacLean had the morning draw off, and came from behind in the afternoon draw to win his opener over Alex MacFadyen of the Silver Fox, trailing 7-5 after 9 ends, and then forcing the extra end with a deuce in 10, and stealing another pair in the extra for a 9-7 win to advance to the A qualifier.
Veronica Smith won both her games by an 8-3 score, scoring 4 points in the 9th end in her first match, against clubmate Jenny McLean, and then breaking open a close 4-3 game with a deuce in the seventh and single steals in 8 and 9 in her second game, against Kaleigh Mackay and her combined Crapaud/Montague team. DiCarlo stole a triple in the seventh in her opener against clubmate Lauren Moerike, going on to win 7-2, and, aided by a 5 point 4th end, beat Cornwall’s Lauren Lenentine 9-4.
Sunday action has a men’s draw at 9, which includes the A qualifier, and a women’s draw at 2, with the women’s A qualifier. A combined men’s/women’s draw follows at 7 pm.
The B section finals go Monday at 7 pm, with the C qualifiers taking place 7 pm Tuesday, and the two game championship round, if needed, being played on Wednesday at 9 am and, if needed, 2 pm.
Championship round scenarios:
1. One team wins all three qualifiers: Championship Round is not required.
2. One team wins two qualifiers. They play in both championship games and win the event if they win either game, while the other winner plays in the first game, and has to win it to advance to the second game.
3. Three separate winners: the team that played in the most qualifying games gets a bye to the second game, while the other winners play off in the first game. If there is a tie in number of qualifying games played, then the team that qualified earliest goes to Z and the other two teams play off in X and Y.

The Cornwall Curling Club has invited some of our newest Islanders, with the help of the PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada (PEIANC), and a grant from the Province of PEI to help pay for staff and ice time, to come out and try the very Canadian game of curling, on three consecutive Sunday evenings in January:
Sunday, January 11 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm
Sunday, January 18 from 7:00 – 9:00 pm
Sunday, January 25 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm
Much like our beginning of season curling instruction, the new curlers are invited to come out any or all nights, if space is available. Curlers will also receive a free hot chocolate.
We will be putting up a signup sheet on Monday calling for volunteers to help out with on-ice instruction and game play. We will need at least one person (preferably two) per sheet per evening. As well as curling know-how, any experience you may have with teaching people whose first language is not English would be an asset.
Newcomers who are interested in taking part are asked to send in your names to:

Rob Swan and Curl Across the Nation tour wraps up his PEI visit tonight in Montague, with a game at 8:30 PM. He curled in Charlottetown this afternoon, and started the day with the Cornwall Curling Club daytime curlers.

Thanks to everyone who took part, and good luck to Rob in his fundraising efforts for the Harvey Station NB Curling Club!
Rob Swan comes from a small community in rural New Brunswick called Harvey Station, where they have been lucky for the past 53 year to have a small curling club. As of late the club is starting to show her age. so for the 2014/2015 curling season it is Rob’s mission to raise money to start renovations to update the club so that it can weather the future in a better position. Planned renos include redoing the washrooms, reinsulating the ice house, putting a brand new base under the ice, and installing a new steel roof.
Today, he’ll be here at the Cornwall Curling Club for a game with the daytime curlers, from 10 am to noon, then he heads to the Charlottetown Curling Club in the afternoon, and concludes his PEI tour at the Montague Curling Rink the evening.
The Charlottetown Curling Complex and Cornwall Curling Club duo of Kyle Holland and Katie Fullerton scored five points in the fourth end on the way to a 7-3 win in six ends over the Tyler Smith and Chloé McCloskey team from the host Crapaud Community Curling Club and the Cornwall club this afternoon to win PEI’s first-ever Mixed Doubles trials. Both teams are junior (under 21) age, with Holland skipping the PEI Pepsi Junior men’s champs last year, and Smith winning the previous year. Smith also represented PEI in the Canada Games in 2011, and will be going again this winter. Both Fullerton and McCloskey are members of the two-time reigning provincial junior women’s championship rink, skipped by Veronica Smith.

All four have some experience at the national level, playing in Mixed Doubles mini-tournaments at the Canadian Juniors. The Holland and Fullerton duo will now be the first Island rink to advance to the Canadian Junior Mixed Trials, which take place in Ottawa in March, with the winner of that event advancing to the World Mixed Doubles in Sochi Russia in April. PEI has already had representation at the World’s, with Robert Campbell and Rebecca Jean MacDonald earning a berth in 2011 as part of their Canadian Mixed championship win.
In this afternoon’s championship game, the Holland/Fullerton team scored a single in the first end, with Smith and McCloskey taking singles in the next two for a 3-1 lead. Holland’s five point fourth end, followed by singles by each team in the next two ends brought the game to an early conclusion.
Holland and Fullerton beat the Smith/McCloskey twosome by an 8-1 score in five ends this morning to capture the C qualifier of the four team Modified Triple Knockout draw. As Holland/Fullerton also captured the A section, while Smith/McCloskey won only the B, they had the advantage going into the two game Championship Round at 1 and 4 pm and would win the championship if they won either game, while Smith and McCloskey would have had to win both. As it turned out, only the first Championship round game was needed.
Holland and Fullerton captured the A section on Friday, with an 11-3 win over the Dario Zannier/Vivian Holm pair from the host Crapaud club in the qualifier game, On Saturday morning, Smith and McCloskey beat Crapaud’s Daniel and Nancy MacFadyen team 9-4 to advance to the Saturday afternoon B qualifier match against Holland/Fullerton, who got off to a great start in their game, stealing singles in the first 3 ends. Smith and McCloskey then jumped into the lead with a four point fourth end. The teams then traded deuces and singles to give Smith and McCloskey the B qualifier ,by a 7-6 score.
Down in the must-win C flight, the MacFadyens took on clubmates Zannier and Holm in a Saturday afternoon game, with a six-point 3rd end propelling the MacFadyen rink to an 11-5 victory. Holland /Fullerton then eliminated the MacFadyens with a 6-2 win in the 4 pm draw.
The Mixed Doubles game format, relatively new to curling, is played over eight ends. Each team has only six stones and one of those stones from each team is prepositioned on the centre line before every end of play. One player delivers the first and last stones of the end while the other player throws the second, third and fourth stones. If they choose to, the two players may swap positions from one end to the next. Both team members are also allowed to sweep.
The Kyle Holland and Katie Fullerton duo from the Charlottetown Curling Complex and the Cornwall Curling Club beat the Tyler Smith and Chloé McCloskey twosome from the Crapaud and Cornwall clubs by an 8-1 score in five ends this morning to capture the C qualifier at the inaugural PEI Mixed Doubles Curling Trials at the Crapaud Community Curling Club. Both are junior-age teams. As Holland/Fullerton also captured the A section of the four team Modified Triple Knockout, while Smith/McCloskey won only the B section, they will have the advantage going into the two game Championship Round at 1 and 4 pm. Holland/Fullerton will take the championship if they win either game, while Smith and McCloskey would have to win both Championship Round games to go on to represent PEI at the National Mixed Doubles Trials in Ottawa in March 2015.
In this morning’s contest, Holland/Fullerton took three points with hammer in the first end, and kept Smith/McCloskey to a single point in end two. Holland/Fullerton then took a deuce and stole a single, giving them a 6-1 lead after four ends. A stolen deuce in the fifth game them and 8-1 lead and brought the game to an early conclusion.
Holland and Fullerton captured the A section on Friday, with an 11-3 win over the Dario Zannier/Vivian Holm pair from the host club in the A qualifier game, On Saturday morning, Smith and McCloskey beat Crapaud’s Daniel and Nancy MacFadyen team 9-4 to advance to the Saturday afternoon B qualifier match against Holland/Fullerton, who got off to a great start in their game, stealing singles in the first 3 ends. Smith and McCloskey then jumped into the lead with a four point fourth end.. The teams then traded deuces and singles to give Smith and McCloskey the B qualifier ,by a 7-6 score.

All four junior players in the Championship Round have Mixed Doubles experience at a national level, having competed in Mixed Doubles games as part of the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, with McCloskey winning a silver medal in Mixed Doubles at last year’s Juniors.

The four teams that started play on Friday at the inaugural PEI Mixed Doubles Curling Trials at the Crapaud Community Curling Club have now been reduced to two — and they’re both Junior-age rinks — the Kyle Holland and Katie Fullerton duo from the Charlottetown Curling Complex and the Cornwall Curling Club, and the Tyler Smith and Chloé McCloskey twosome from the Crapaud and Cornwall clubs, so one of the Cornwall players, either Fullerton or McCloskey, will be going to the nationals in Ottawa in the spring.
Holland and Fullerton captured the A section of the Modified Triple-Knockout round on Friday, with an 11-3 win over the Dario Zannier/Vivian Holm pair from the host club in the A qualifier game, On Saturday morning, Smith and McCloskey beat Crapaud’s Daniel and Nancy MacFadyen team 9-4 to advance to the Saturday afternoon B qualifier match against Holland/Fullerton, who got off to a great start in their game, stealing singles in the first 3 ends. Smith and McCloskey then jumped into the lead with a four point fourth end.. The teams then traded deuces and singles to give Smith and McCloskey the B qualifier ,by a 7-6 score.
Down in the must-win C flight, the MacFadyens took on clubmates Zannier and Holm in an afternoon game, with a six-point 3rd end propelling the MacFadyen rink to an 11-5 victory. Holland /Fullerton then eliminated the MacFadyens with a 6-2 win in the 4 pm draw.
The two junior rinks, Holland/Fullerton and Smith/McCloskey will play up to three games on Sunday, first squaring off in the C Qualifier at 10 am. The winner of that game will have a big advantage going into the two game championship round at one and four, as they will take the championship if they win either game, while the loser of the C Qualifier would have to win both championship round games to go on to represent PEI at the National Mixed Doubles Trials in Ottawa in March 2015.
All four junior players have Mixed Doubles experience at a national level, having competed in Mixed Doubles games as part of the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, with McCloskey winning a silver medal in Mixed Doubles at last year’s Juniors.

The Kyle Holland and Katie Fullerton rink from the Charlottetown Curling Complex and the Cornwall Curling Club are 2-0 after opening day play at the inaugural PEI Mixed Doubles curling trials at the Crapaud Community Curling Club, and have captured the “A” event in the four team triple knockout competition ensuring them a berth in the championship round on Sunday. The duo won their opener 11-3 over the Dario Zannier/Vivian Holm twosome from the host club, taking four points in the third end, and triples in ends five and six to end the game early. Their second match, against Daniel and Nancy MacFadyen of Crapaud was much closer, with the teams tied at 3 after four ends, and at 6 after eight. Holland/Fullerton stole the extra end for the win.
The MacFadyens won their opener 7-6 over Crapaud and Cornwall’s Tyler Smith and Chloé McCloskey team, stealing the final end for the win. Smith/McCloskey won their second game, 7-5 over Zannier/Holm.
On Saturday, the Smith and MacFadyen rinks square off at 10 am, with the winner facing Holland in the B qualifier at 1 pm and the loser taking on Zannier at the same time in the C event. At 4 pm, the winner of the C event game takes on the loser of the B qualifier, with the winner of that game facing the winner of the B qualifier in the C qualifier game at 10 am Sunday.
The A, B, and C winners then square off in the two game championship round on Sunday at 1 and 4, unless the Holland/Fullerton team wins all three sections, which would give them the Mixed Doubles title without playing the championship round.
The winning team will move on to represent PEI at the National Mixed Doubles Trials in Ottawa in March 2015.
The first round, sponsored by Lowther Snow Removal, of the Wednesday evening Ladder League is in the books, and the results are easy to tabulate. The Mark MacDonald rink went undefeated to win the A pool, while the Bob Fowler foursome were also unbeaten to capture the B pool first round.
Paul Durant and Paul Neima were next in the A pool with 5 wins and 2 losses. Durant beat Neima in their game, and is consequently the second place finisher in the pool. The Ray Biagé and Gord Peters rinks both had 2 wins, while the Kim Glydon team picked up a single victory. These three teams will travel down the ladder to the B pool for Round Two, which starts next week (December 17), then takes a two week break for Christmas Eve and New Year’s eve, and picks up again on January 7.
The three teams climbing the ladder to replace them in the A pool will be the Fowler team, plus two junior men’s rinks, skipped by Donald DeWolfe, who picked up six wins, and Devin Schut, who won five of their seven games.
