Friday Fun Night and Sports Day Try Curling events held

Another successful Friday Fun Night was held this weekend, with over two dozen curlers in attendance. I hear the pot luck was delicious! Thanks to the organizers, including Board member Krista Affleck. Don’t miss the next Friday Fun Night!

On Saturday, prospective curlers of all ages took to the ice to Try Curling on Sports Day in Canada. A drawing for two Sports Day T-Shirts was held, with winners Jake Dickey and Stephen Lewis. There will also be a drawing for a $100 gift certificate for the curling club of their choice, awarded on Monday from among the attendees at all seven dedicated curling facilities. PEI Junior Women’s champ Veronica Smith, who was coordinating the event at the seven clubs, was on-hand, and helped out on the ice, as did Club President Paul Neima,  Board of Directors member Paula Ling, and Club member Myron MacKay. We also had two stick curling instructors, Bryan Ferguson and Shirley Lank, on hand, but no prospective stick curlers were in attendance.

Stick Curling nationals on tap for St. Albert Alberta (St. Albert Gazette)

It’s shaping up to be a full house for the Canadian Open Stick Curling Championship.

The draw limit is 48 two-person teams for the March 30 to April 2 nationals at the St. Albert Curling Club.

“It’s going very good. We’ve got between 25 and 30 entries all ready and its still four months to go,” said Milt McDougall of the St. Albert organizing committee. “I hope to have about 60 registered because there will probably be some that won’t be able to make it at the last minute.”

McDougall said teams hail from Vancouver to Prince Edward Island. A strong St. Albert contingent is also part of the mix.

STICK CURLING – Garry Sherman lines up a shot at the 2012 two-person stick curling provincials at the St. Albert Curling Club. The Didsbury duo of Sherman and Carson Schultz finished the 32-team draw undefeated. Next year St. Albert hosts the 10th annual Canadian Open Stick Curling Championship.
CHRIS COLBOURNE/St. Albert Gazette

McDougall and stick partner, Bob McKenzie, competed at the 2013 nationals in Cornwall, P.E.I. while spreading the good news about the St. Albert nationals at the banquet as the honoured guests.

He was impressed by the hospitality at the Cornwall Curling Club, host of the ninth nationals and the first to be held east of Winnipeg.

“It was a great experience. They ran a good show. They treated us very well. The people were good. The meals were good. The facility was good but their ice wasn’t near as good as what we have here,” McDougall said. “The rocks weren’t matched well and we didn’t curl well so we didn’t make it into the finals.”

He rates Alberta and Manitoba as the hotbeds of stick curling.

“Prince Edward Island is getting strong too and I would also include New Brunswick and Nova Scotia as well. Saskatchewan has quite a few too but nobody from there went to Prince Edward Island (for nationals). B.C. is getting a lot now. We’ve got about six, seven entries out of B.C. right now.”

Off-Island teams take top spots at Fall Fling (Journal Pioneer)

SUMMERSIDE — Island teams made it to the finals of this weekend’s annual Fall Fling junior curling cash spiel at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club, but neither was able to take the top spot.

On the women’s side, the Justine Comeau team, from the Capital Winter Club in Fredericton, N.B., bested the Amanda MacLean foursome from the Cornwall Curling Club, by a score of 9-3, with MacLean conceding after seven ends.

Comeau, 15, enjoyed the spiel and felt it was a great one to participate in.

“We had quite a few breaks in the sixth end. We had to put our rocks in the right place. We were able to pull it off,” Comeau said of the championship match.

On the junior men’s side, Graeme Weagle, with third Jeffery Meagher, second Scott Weagle and lead Max Kessler, from the Chester Curling Club in Chester, N.S., came from behind for an 8-4 victory over Matthew MacLean and his team of Alan MacLean, Shawn Pitre and Noah O’Connor from the Cornwall Curling Club.

“We didn’t expect much, because we are 13-14 (year-olds) and playing under 21. But we did great. We held it together,” Weagle reflected on his win.

“The competition was just great. (There are) some of the best teams in the Atlantic Provinces. It’s great to be able to play against them,” he added.

Mixed Doubles bonspiel set for January 4th. Get your 2 person team together!

Mixed Doubles Curling  is new form of the tradtional sport, with the following differences:

– Instead of playing in teams of four, mixed doubles curling is for teams of two players – one male and one female (no alternate/spare player is allowed).

– Teams have only six stones each (instead of eight) and one of those stones, from each team, is prepositioned on the centreline before each end of play starts.

– Player one delivers the first and last stones and player two plays the second, third and fourth stones. If they choose to, the two players may swap positions from one end to the next.

– Sweeping can be done by both team members.

– Each team receives 46 minutes of playing time and games are fixed at 8 ends – compared to 73 minutes and 10 ends for “traditional” curling.

mixeddblssmith

CCA photo: Cornwall’s Veronica Smith in a Mixed Doubles mini-competition at the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Curling Championships in Fort McMurray, Alta. (she lost the final of the bronze medal game in the mini-competition to her sister Sabrina)

Mixed Doubles has both a Canadian and a World championship, and is played in over 25 countries on four continents.

Curl PEI is planning a Provincial Mixed Doubles Championship at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary from Feb. 13-17 (same dates and place as the Mixed). Entries have to be in by Jan. 16, with entry fee of $100 per team. The winners of the provincial championship will advance to the 2014 Mixed Doubles Curling Trials, March 19-23, 2014 at the Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club.

Teams at the Trials in Ottawa are responsible for their own travel and accommodations as well as the entry fee of  $400 per team. The entry fees collected will be returned in full as prize money. A host hotel with a preferred rate will be announced by January 1, 2014, however, choice of accommodations is up to the individual teams. Curl PEI will apply for a “team grant”  from the provincial government to assist with travel expenses. Coaches are welcome and will have access to the field of play for practices and time-outs. However, there will not be a spare or alternate pool nor will alternates be allowed to compete.

The 2014 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championships will take place April 23-30 in Dumfries Scotland, in conjunction with the World Senior Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships.

If you are interested in Mixed Doubles, get your two-person team together, as the Club is planning a bonspiel, on Saturday, January 4th, where you can try out this new form of our sport, and perhaps decide to sign up for the provincials.

For a better idea on how a Mixed Doubles game works, take a look at the final, between Hungary and Sweden from last year’s Worlds in Fredericton NB:

Full  Game Logistics(World Curling Federation)
(a) A team is composed of two players, one male, and one female. Alternate players are not allowed. A team must forfeit any game(s) in which it fails to have both athletes playing for the entire game. One coach will be allowed for each team.
(b) The scoring shall be the same as in a regular game of curling. The “positioned” stones that are placed before the beginning of each end are eligible to be counted in the scoring.
(c) Each game will be scheduled for eight (8) ends.
(d) Each team shall receive twenty-four (24) minutes of thinking time.
(e) When extra ends are required, the clocks will be reset, and each team shall receive three (3) minutes of thinking time for each extra end.
(f) Each team shall deliver five (5) stones per end. The player delivering the team’s first stone of the end must also deliver the team’s last stone of that end. The other team member shall deliver the team’s second, third and fourth stones for that end. The player delivering the first stone can change from end to end.
(g) Modified FGZ – No stone in play, including the “positioned” stones and those in the house, can be moved to an out-of-play position prior to the delivery of the fourth stone of an end (the fourth delivered stone is the first stone that can remove any stone from play). If there is a violation, the delivered stone shall be removed from play, and any displaced stone(s) shall be replaced to their original position by the non-offending team.
(h) Before the start of every end, one team shall instruct the game umpire to place their team’s “positioned” stone at the playing end of the sheet in one of two positions, designated A and B. The opponent’s “positioned” stone shall then be placed by the game umpire in whichever position (A or B) remains vacant. The location of these positions shall be as follows:
1) Position A: Placement so that the stone is bisected by the centre line and is either immediately in front of or immediately behind one of 3 points in the ice. The points are placed on the centre line:
§ at the mid-point between the hog line and the outermost edge of the top of the house
§ 0.915 m. (3 feet) from the mid-point closer to the house
§ 0.915 m. (3 feet) from the mid-point closer to the hog line

Based on the ice conditions, the Chief Umpire shall determine the specific placement for Position A to be used before the start of the pre-game practice and that same placement must be used for the entire game.
2) Position B: Placement so that the stone is in the back of the house, bisected by the centre line and abutting the back edge of the tee.
(i) The team having the decision on the placement of the “positioned” stones shall be:
1) Teams opposing each other in the game shall use the Last Stone Draw (LSD) to determine which team has the decision in the first end. The team with the lesser LSD distance shall have the decision on the placement.
2) Following the first end, the team that did not score shall have the decision on the placement.
3) If neither team scores in an end, the team that delivered the first stone in that end shall have the decision on placement in the next end.
(j) The team whose “positioned” stone is placed in Position A (in front of the house) shall deliver the first stone in that end, and the team whose “positioned” stone is placed in Position B (in the house) shall deliver the second stone in that end.
(k) While the team is in the process of delivery, the non-delivering player must be positioned inside the hog line and on the ice surface at the playing end of the sheet. After delivery, either or both players may sweep their delivered stone and any stones set in motion that belong to their team anywhere in front of the tee line at the playing end. This applies during all of the team’s delivered stones, including the LSD.
(l) If a player delivers a stone out of proper rotation, that stone is returned to the hack to be delivered by the correct player, after any displaced stones have been replaced to their original positions by the non-offending team. Should the infraction not be discovered until after the delivery of a subsequent stone, play continues as if the infraction had not occurred.

Wednesday evening Ladder League – Round One Draw

Round One of three is set to go in the Wednesday evening Ladder League. We have two nine-team pools
To play all games in each round would mean we would need 9 weeks per round (play 8 teams and have a bye), so we can only play partial round robins, as the season is six weeks too short for three full rounds. Not all teams will get a bye in a round, so we will have to factor in number of games played. We will run the 1st round up to Christmas (8 weeks), so we can start Round Two in the new year. We have two weeks off for the holidays, as Christmas and New Years days are both on Wednesdays. We will split the remaining 13 weeks into 7 and 6 week rounds, with Round Two ending Feb. 19 and Round Three ending April 2.
We alternate draw times between A and B pools each week. Since the A pool had the early draw for the first week last year, we’ll give it to the B pool this year. We will have identical draws in each pool e.g. if team A1 is playing on sheet 1, team B1 will, too.
We had two teams, one from each pool, requesting byes on Nov. 6, so we have adjusted the team order so those teams are both in the same position and we can give the byes.

Be sure to sign in every week for our 50X50 Snowball Draw! Here’s how it works: there is a jar by the bar, and a notebook by the jar. Chuck a Toonie in the jar, and print and sign your name in the notebook (no-one else can sign in for you). Each Thursday (will be Friday November 1st next week, as there is no curling Thurs. eve. due to Hallowe’en), a name will be drawn from our list of paid members. If it is YOUR name, and you signed in that week, you win half the contents of the jar. If you did NOT sign in, you win NOTHING, and the money “snowballs” i.e. is carried over to the next week. The pot continues to grow each week until a name is drawn and the person is signed in.  In the event that all  draws have not had a chance to sign in (storms, holidays, etc), the draw may sometimes be postponed to a second week. Sign in each time, and spare yourself the anguish of having your name drawn, but not being able to bring home the cash because you didn’t sign in!

Wednesday Evening Ladder League Rosters, Qualifier Night draw

After a few last-minute team and roster changes, including the addition of another team (the Donald DeWolfe junior rink), making a total of 18, the Wednesday Evening Ladder League is set to go.

There will be two pools of nine teams, with one team in each pool having a bye each night (except for this week!). At the end of each round, we will move the bottom three teams from the A pool down the ladder to B, and the top three B teams up the ladder to A. There are prizes at the end of the season for the A and B winners each round.

As we have quite a few team and roster changes, we start fresh each season, by doing a random draw for opening night, “Qualifier Night”, with the winning teams going into the A pool, and the losing teams going into the B pool for the first round robin draw, which starts on Oct. 30.

Note that this week (only) in order to give all 18 teams a chance to qualify, we be playing Five end (yes, five!) games on Ice 1, and Eight End games on ices 2-4. If you are on ice 1, please be aware that the start times for the second and third games are 7:45 and 9 pm, respectively.

Mark the draw sheet on the Wednesday board with a W or L at the end of your draw. We will be using a different scoring sheet/system next week.

Here is the draw, courtesy of Random.org:

Draw changes and availability

We`ve had to make a few draw changes to accommodate which nights our members would like to curl, and to keep byes to a minimum, particularly on single-entry draws, so that our members get their money`s worth. Here are the changes and current availability:

1) We’ve decided to cancel our Sunday night draw, as we’ve been able to accommodate our members on weeknights, which, we have learned, is when they prefer to curl. The Sunday evening spot will be available for rental.

2) We have a big signup for Monday evening single-entry at 6:30, and, in order to accommodate everyone, we’ve decided to reserve space for eight more players, by using a sheet of ice at 8:30 as well (we’ve got six commercial league teams, so there is a sheet free). That means that every five weeks or so, a team will  play at 8:30. If you are in the draw and cannot curl at 8:30, let us know as soon as possible – we have a couple of spots on Thursday at 6 that you could switch to. We currently have five vacancies on the Monday draw, so if you are interested in changing to, or adding Monday night to your draws, let us know. We also looked into the possibility of byes, but decided that using the 8:30 sheet would give our members more opportunity to curl.

3) We have 16 teams for Tuesday competitive, the perfect number!

4) We have the same number of teams as last year for Wednesday Ladder League (17), which means one bye (no change).

5) We have a couple of spots left on Thursday at 6.

6) Signup is low for The Dominion league on Thursday at 8. Decision on this will be made soon.

Thanks for your support as we continue to make our draws suit our membership! And remember – it’s still not too late to sign-up!
