Thanks to everyone who attended or helped out at our Try Curling sessions, and welcome to new members!

Our Try Curling sessions were a success, with a lot of people coming out to learn about the sport of curling, and a number of them deciding to join our Club! Thanks to everyone who helped out on and off the ice, including President Paul Neima and our Board of Directors members, along with our on-ice instructors Debby Sigsworth, Ray Biagé, Bryan Sutherland, Angus Davies, Greg Groves (and anyone else I left out!).

A special welcome to those who joined our Club, including those who joined after attending the sessions, and the more experienced curlers who also made the decision to curl at our Club. Curling will be starting on Monday night, so watch the website and The Guardian for your draw information!

thank-you

Final Try Curling session tonight – don’t miss it!

The Cornwall Curling Club’s annual “Try Curling” free, no obligation adult curling lessons are wrapping up tonight from 6:30-8:30 pm. Details at CornwallCurling.com/trycurling.

If you haven’t been out yet (or have, and want to learn more!) tonight is your last chance to give the Olympic sport of curling a try.. We have both beginner and continuing (and stick) classes each night, so we can accommodate you, whether you are just beginning, or have some experience.

curlingschoolpres2013Club President,(and one of the instructors) Paul Neima briefs the curlers before they head out on the ice at Wednesday night’s Try Curling sessions

New members registration for both junior and adult members is happening at the same time, and our draws are filling up fast! Drop in this evening to tour our fine facilities, and check out our reasonably-priced membership options. We still have lots of availability for Sunday single-entry at 7pm, and, at last count, have room for another team on both Tuesday and Wednesday nights. We have 15 teams registered for Tuesday competitive, and 17 (will be one bye team each night, or two if we get 18) on Wednesday semi-competitive Ladder League. Single-entry weekday evening draws are almost full. There are only one or two teams registered for The Dominion league on Thursday at 8, so there may be changes there..

Don’t forget that Monday to Friday daytime curling, from 10 am to noon, is already underway. Besides membership options, drop-ins are welcome, at $10 a draw or $80 for a pack of 10 draw tickets. Teams are made up as players arrive each day, so you can show up any weekday and give it a try! Also don’t forget to contact the Club to pre-register for Sunday member practice times – 1-3:30 pm.

Curling at Cornwall: fun, sociable, great exercise! – Give it a try!

Looking for a fun way to exercise in a sociable atmosphere? Try Curling at our open houses Oct. 15-17 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.

Click for full details

Curling is a sport that anyone, at almost any age, can play, and includes options for those with varying degrees of mobility impairment. It’s not expensive, in comparison with other sports that require much more equipment, officials, and high registration fees. Cornwall has team (any combination of male and/or female curlers) and individual entry (mixed male and female) draws, and daytime 2-person “stick” curling too.  The sport is great exercise, increasing flexibility, and providing cardio, with over 2 miles walked in a typical curling game, and lots of sweeping exercise, too!

20130406_29

Joining a curling club is also a great social activity – allowing you to get together regularly with your friends and coworkers, and make new friends and business contacts. After each game, the two teams involved sit down at the table together, and share a drink or two, with the first “sociable” round, by custom,  purchased by the winning team. Weekend bonspiels provide a fun atmosphere for the recreational curler, with great music, off-ice activities, and food thrown in, all for a very reasonable cost (check out our website’s Photo  section to see pictures from some of our legendary funspiels!). There are also cashspiels and provincial championships for those who want to take their game up a notch (who knows, you could even be in the Olympics some day!)

If you’d like more info on why curling rocks, check out these great videos from the Canadian Curling Association.

Give curling a try – you won’t regret it!

The Cornwall Curling Club – we like to have fun, but we’re competitive, too!

Although the Cornwall Curling Club may have traditionally been known for its recreational curling and fun bonspiels, and as great place for the beginner curler, it is now becoming known as well as the home of a number of provincial, regional, and Canadian champs and runners-up.

For example, last year’s winners who curled out of our Club included the Canadian Open and Women’s 2-person stick champs, the 2012 Special Olympics team of the year, the Provincial Junior Men’s and Junior Women’s champs, the Maritime Masters women’s champs and runners-up, the Provincial Seniors men’s and women’s runners-up, the Provincial Mixed runners-up, one of the two Atlantic University women’s championship teams, Provincial Junior Mixed champions (both divisions), and Under 13 Boys Champions and Girls runners-up. We had a Club member on the provincial championship Tankard men’s teams, and members on all medal-winning winning teams in the 55+ Games stick curling event, and won 7 of the 9 regular stick curling medals. At the varsity level, we had Cornwall members at both the Atlantic and Canadian University and the Canadian College championships. Our coaches won a number of awards, as well.

For the competitive curler, we offer our Tuesday night Competitive League, our Wednesday afternoon Daytime Competitive League, our semi-competitive Wednesday evening Ladder League, our Thursday evening The Dominion league, as well as Stick Curling, after-school Juniors curling, and are hosting the PEI Junior Fall League on 4 occasions.

2 person Stick Curling – a sport that everyone can play, here at the home of the Canadian champs

Two Person Stick Curling is relatively new sport which provides challenge and excitement for people of all ages on an equal and competitive basis, and in a social atmosphere. Stick Curling is also appropriate for people with physical disabilities such as knee, back, heart, shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, ankle, or foot problems.  The rocks are delivered with a curling stick from a standing or sitting position (i.e. wheelchairs) enabling everyone to participate competitively.

20130402_168

As well as the two person sport, stick curlers are also welcome to curl with “hack delivery” curlers in all other (four person per team) draws at Cornwall. The Club is also fully wheelchair accessible right down to the ice level, and, although we currently do not have any members who play from wheelchairs, they are welcome, and we had wheelchair participants in the Canadian Championships.

20130402_14

Note that stick curlers are welcome in the Dominion and the Masters (age 60 or over) championships, but not in other provincial champioships that lead to a Canadian Curling Association national final, such as the Brier, the Seniors, or the Scotties.

2 person stick curling draw go at 12:30 pm on Monday,Tuesday, and Thursday afternoons. After the Wednesday afternoon Daytime Competitive league starts, the Wednesday morning draw will include sheets for both regular and stick curling. Additionally, the stick curlers are looking into curling on Friday afternoons rather than Thursdays.

The Cornwall Curling Club knows a thing or two about the sport of 2 person Stick Curling – we hosted the Canadian Championships back in April, with our host club teams beating teams from other provinces to capture both divisions, along with the consolation final, with Roddie MacLean and Paul Field winning the open division (and combination of men and women), Ruth Stavert and Eileen Blanchard taking the women’s, and Vern Chowan and Grant Leard capturing the consolation section.

In Stick Curling there are two curlers per team, who deliver their rocks with delivery sticks, with each team member delivering from opposite ends of the ice sheet. Sweeping is allowed only from the hog line to the back of the house at the playing end. Two curlers, one from each team, alternately deliver 6 stones each per end, while their teammate skips that end. The roles are then reversed, and the partners deliver the stones back. No stone may be removed from play until the fourth stone of each end. Games are six ends and take about an hour to play. For more information on Stick Curling, including complete rules of play, visit www.stickcurling.ca.

Rent our ice! Rental rates for 2013-2014

Book our ice (starting Oct. 15) and/or hall facilities for your next office party, family bonspiel, or fun time with friends!
iceforrent
Renting one sheet of ice for 8 curlers for two hours is a bargain at $9 a person taxes in (it’s cheaper than adult bowling, the movies and many other activities!). We provide the renters with curling brushes, and sliders – just bring clean sneakers, and wear stretchy or loose pants. We can also provide basic curling instruction, and bar services are available, too!
We can seat up to 100 people in our clubhouse area. Facilities are also available for rental in the upstairs Civic Centre hall. We have a number of catering options available, or you can use our kitchen facilities at no additional cost.

Our ice rental rates have been revised for 2013-2014 to take into account the HST. In order to help reduce the impact of the additional tax, the Club will be taking a 5.5% decrease in our revenue on rentals this year over last. The total rate after tax to the renter will increase slightly (2.6%), as we now have to charge HST at 14%, instead of GST at 5. Here are this season’s rates

One-sheet rental for two hours: $63 +HST = $71.82

Four sheets for two hours: $153+HST = $174.42

Four sheets for four hours: $248 +HST = $282.72

Four sheets for eight hours: $437+HST =  $498.18

Call us at 566-4427 to book, or for different sheet quantities, catering or additional hall options.

Opportunity for one-draw members to add Sunday evening for free

The Board of Directors are planning to have a 7 pm Sunday evening league, which, we expect, will have a lot of beginning curlers in it. In order to provide the mentorship needed, we would like to offer our existing one-draw (daytime or evening) members the opportunity to curl that evening, in addition to their other draw, for no additional cost. They would be expected to help out the beginners, and possibly provide them with some instruction as well. If you are interested, let us know at returning members night on the 9th. This is dependant on the numbers who sign up this year, and there would be a limit on the number of current members we would need.

Returning membership registration goes Oct. 9th, from 6:30-8:30 pm. Team-entry and single-entry member curling runs Sunday through Thursday evenings, along with a Commercial League on Monday evening.

Note that our daytime curling is open to EVERYONE – not just Seniors. If you are a seasonal or shift worker, or any other person who has spare time during the day, why not get in some curling?  Morning daytime curling gets underway Oct. 15.

20130125_135

Membership types with daytime curling options include:
Two Daytime sessions per week – $200
Adult Unlimited Daytime only – $275
Adult Unlimited (Day and Evening) – $330
Couple Unlimited –  $570
Full-time Student (19+) Unlimited – $220

($15 Curl PEI/CCA fee, and HST added to above rates)

As well, drop-in curlers, including non-members, and members whose membership does not include daytime curling, are welcome in our daytime slots, especially the 10 am weekday draws, where teams are made up as players arrive.

Drop-in rates are $10 per game, or $5 for juniors, taxes in. For those who “drop-in” frequently for the daytime draws, a pack of 10 daytime drop-in fees is available at a discounted rate of $80.

The 10 am daytime draw works like this: Club members regularly in the draw have discs that they drop in a cup labeled with the position that they want to play. Drop-in players for this draw are required to obtain a chit for this purpose from the office by paying the drop-in fee. It will have their name on it, and will be turned in by the drawmaster to the office after it is used.

Qualification for The Dominion playdowns

dominionbackground.jpg

The Dominion Curling Club Championship is an annual event for men’s and women’s curling teams who have won their respective local club championships. Winning teams from the Club event will be “The Dominion Club Champions” and play down to produce a provincial/territory champion from all 10 provinces and 3 territories, plus a separate entry for Northern Ontario, who will then compete at the national level.

The 2014 Club playdowns for the Dominion Curling Club Championship will take place Feb. 7-9, with the provincials March 27-31 at the Silver Fox in Summerside, and the nationals November 24-29, 2014 at the Mayflower Curling Club in Halifax.

In order for your team to qualify for the Club playdowns, the Board of Directors had decided that you must play together in a regular league (e.g  the Tuesday evening Competitive League, the daytime competitive league, the Wednesday evening Ladder League), or in a new Thursday evening “The Dominion” draw, for a minimum of six weeks.

Here are the 2014 national eligibility criteria:

The Dominion Curling Club Championship Eligibility Requirements 2014

We trust that all participants will respect the intent of this championship which is for curling clubs to engage their members to participate in a club championship to declare a club champion to represent the curling club. The event is formulated for true club championship teams, not elite, past or present. The objective is to support the development of curling across Canada. We keep this objective in mind as we set our eligibility requirements and on-ice rules, including the CCA Rules of Curling for General Play. The Dominion reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to exclude any team that violates this spirit and intent as it pertains to the rules below.

1. The curling club, represented by the team, must be affiliated with its Provincial/Territorial curling association and all dues must be paid in full. The players of any club champion team must be members in good standing of the affiliated curling club. Any player can be a member of more than one affiliated curling club, but shall declare one “home club” for this competition.

2. Each club will declare a men’s team and women’s team of 4 players that have played together regularly in a sanctioned club league.  Alternatively, club members who curl regularly may participate in a designated The Dominion Curling Club Championship competition within their club. Players who play exclusively in a major/super league without playing in another sanctioned club league are ineligible to compete.

3. Each team will be allowed only 1 player who has played in a Juniors’, Men’s (Brier), Women’s (Scotties) or Seniors’ provincial/territory event in the current or previous 4 curling seasons, or participated in a Grand Slam event in the current or previous 4 curling seasons.* (2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14)

*Exception – Provinces/Territories with an open provincial/territory event will be permitted 1 player who has placed top 25% in a Juniors’, Men’s (Brier), Women’s (Scotties) or Seniors’ provincial/territory event in the current or previous 4 curling seasons, or participated in a Grand Slam event in the current or previous 4 curling seasons.

4. All games will be 8 ends with ties being decided by a full extra end.

5. Once a four person team has been declared a club champion, a maximum of 1 replacement/substitute player from the club can play lead. It is at the discretion of each curling club to determine their replacement/substitute rules throughout their process to declare their club champions.

6. Each team will be allowed a maximum of 2 players under the age of 20, as of December 31st of the year prior to the championship (minimum age of 15 as of December 31st). Provincial/Territorial curling associations may adopt a more restrictive age criteria if they choose.

7. The Dominion has the sole authority to grant exceptions to these rules in extraordinary circumstances. Before exercising this discretion, The Dominion will consult with the relevant Provincial/Territorial curling association, and will notify the Provincial/Territorial association in writing of any decisions regarding exceptions that are granted.

Ceiling lowered, soundproofing added!

We are happy to report that the ceiling in the Curling Club has now been lowered, and soundproofing has been added. We were there this evening, and barely noticed the Zumba class upstairs (would not have been the case previously!). It also appeared to us that the sound in the room is better – the lower acoustic tiles seem to be absorbing some of the sound reflections. As well, the ceiling lights are now switchable in two banks, so we can have every second lighting unit on if we don’t want full brightness.

lowerrceiling

Also, the swimming pool adjacent to the Club is currently in the process of being lengthened. To accommodate this, our fire exit door in the back of the ice house is being moved from the sheet 4 side to the sheet 1 side.

Around the House: Stick curler makes it a clean sweep

Wednesday, 11 September 2013 – Posted by Jean Mills

Listen! Can you hear it? That’s the sound of skips calling and rocks sliding on the ice as another season gets underway. Ice techs, club managers, league conveners, coaches, and curlers of all ages – let’s not forget fans, too – are ramping up for the 2013-2014 season.

Of course, there’s tons happening on the competitive front (did someone just say “Olympics?”), but let’s keep our attention focused on people and events closer to home, on the grassroots side of the curling life. This season, as we have for the past three years, Around the House will tell the stories of curlers and their winter homes: the fresh sheets of pebbled ice where they play the game, and the warm club room where they gather to socialize afterwards. We’ll hear about some big anniversaries, special people and fun events, all taking place at curling centres across the country.

Gloria Clarke and Ruth Stavert (Photo Curl PEI)

Here’s a story to start the new season off on a high: a curler who won not one, not two, not even three, but four curling titles last year.

This champion of the two-person stick curling circuit is Ruth Stavert, of the Cornwall Curling Club in Prince Edward Island. Last season, Stavert won the provincial Curl PEI championship and the Maritime Stick Championships with teammate Gloria Clarke.

When Clarke had to bow out because of illness, Stavert teamed with club mate Eileen Blanchard to win the Vogue Optical Provincial 55+ Games, and completed the circuit by taking the title at the Canadian Stick Curling Championships.

Yes, Stavert achieved a clean sweep of championships on the provincial, regional and national scenes, all in one season. Perhaps that’s not such a stretch for a curler who has been on the ice for over forty years, competing at the provincial level in Scotties, Women’s Seniors, Masters, Seniors Mixed and the 55+ Games, and representing P.E.I. four times at the Canadian 55+ Games. Leading up to her stellar 2013 season, Stavert had already won four provincial and three Maritime championships.

Ruth Stavert, Cornwall Curling Club (Photo Curl PEI)

Stavert started her two-person stick-curling career in 2007, when she decided to help promote the game even though she was still able to use the standard slide delivery. Although she has competed in both regular and two-person stick curling in the past, a hip condition now restricts her to using only the stick delivery.

“The delivery stick has been a real boon to our continued participation in curling as my curling career would have been finished in 1994 and Ruth’s done two years ago,” says Ruth’s husband, Ernie, who started using a delivery stick in 1998, and who adds that he was the first person on P.E.I. to do so, using a piece of plumbing pipe. “We both curl regularly with the daytime curlers at the Cornwall Club and compete on the P.E.I. stick curling circuit”.

Ruth’s accomplishments on the ice are only part of the story, of course. Like so many curlers, both Ruth and Ernie are very active in their community, including as volunteers at the organizational level in local, provincial, and national curling events.

It comes as no surprise that Curl PEI presented Stavert with the 2013 Senior Female Athlete of the Year Award.

“I felt very honoured to be recognized by my fellow curlers,” she said after the presentation last May at the Curl PEI annual meeting.

Atlantic Canada’s best curlers in action at CARI Complex starting Thursday-don’t miss it!

curlatlanticchshiplogo2013
The Curl Atlantic Championship, set for the CARI Complex in Charlottetown Sept. 12-15, promises exciting curling action and affordable ticket prices. Blair Weeks, co-chair of the championship, says that the event will promise some of the most exciting first class curling that Atlantic Canada has to offer. “We are incredibly excited for the start of this event as our field of competitors includes well-known national champions, as well as local curling stars that are sure to draw crowds.”
Former Brier champion Mark Dacey and five-time Scotties Tournament of Hearts champion Mary Anne Arsenault will be among the skips vying for the 2013 Curl Atlantic Championship titles, as will PEI’s reigning Scotties champ Suzanne Birt, former national Scotties silver medallist Kathy O’Rourke, and Eddie MacKenzie, who, along with Newfoundland’s Stacie Deveraux, are participating as defending event champions. Other PEI entries are skipped by current Senior men’s champ and men’s runner-up Rod MacDonald, along with Jamie Newson.

The Curl Atlantic Championship is the premiere annual curling event for the region. The highly competitive event is comprised of twelve men’s teams and twelve women’s teams vying for their respective titles. Both the men’s and women’s divisions will have two pools of six teams playing a round-robin draw prior to play-off rounds. Earlier this year, the City of Charlottetown and the CARI Complex were awarded the hosting rights to the event through 2015.
The event provides a unique opportunity for avid curling fans and general sport enthusiasts alike to be a part of an exciting event. “With affordable ticket options, we are making this event as accessible as possible to everyone who wants to come out and cheer on their favourite curlers,” added Weeks.
An adult championship pass, which provides access to all draws, including the playoff round and championship games, is $30 (taxes included). A youth (age 16 and under) or senior (age 60 and over) championship pass is $20, and a general day pass is $10.
Tickets are now available for purchase online by visiting www.curlatlanticchampionship.ca/tickets. Tickets are also available in person at the CARI Complex.
For ongoing information on the championship, visit curlatlanticchampionship.ca or follow @CurlAtlantic on Twitter.

No membership fee increases this year (except for the HST!)

membership-has-its-privileges-85202501

The Cornwall Curling Club’s Board of Directors met this week, and decided that there would be no membership fee increases for the upcoming season. However, the HST was implemented on April 1st, which means that memberships will now be subject to 14% HST, instead of the 5% GST that was in effect last season. As well, as has been the case in recent years, a $15 Canadian Curling Association/Curl PEI fee will be added to memberships.

Here is the fee structure for the 2013-2014 season:
One Evening Draw per week – $200
Two Daytime sessions per week – $200
Adult Unlimited Evening only – $305
Adult Unlimited Daytime only – $275
Adult Unlimited (Day and Evening) – $330
Couple Unlimited –  $570
Full-time Student (19+) Unlimited – $220
Commercial League – $650
Little Rockers – $45 for one session, $80 for both sessions
Novice (8-12) and Juniors (13-20) – $120
Junior Membership + one evening draw – $220

Please note that, unlike some other clubs, ALL memberships, including one-draw per week memberships, give you the opportunity to play in members-only tournaments (entry fee applies),  compete (entry fees apply) in provincial championships, book practice time when ice is available, and spare in any league without additional cost.
Note that HST and the $15 CCA/Curl PEI surcharge applies to the above rates.
Payment terms for adult memberships:  1/2 due on registration and 1/2 due on December 1. A $10.00 service charge applies to payments received after Dec 1. Youth memberships are due at registration. Membership fees may be paid with Debit, Visa, Mastercard, cheque, or cash.

Other (HST only):

Locker Rentals   $25 per season (may be shared)

Social Memberships (attend club functions, curl only in weekend spiels at extra cost)   $40

Non-Members “drop-in” fee per draw (pay at bar):

Drop-in Policy

We welcome “drop-in” (non-member) curlers, particularly in our 10 am weekday draws, where teams are made up as players arrive, and also as spares in our other draws. If your spare is a Club member, they don’t have to pay anything extra, but, if your spare is not a member, they are required to pay a “drop-in” fee.

If you don’t have the time to curl here regularly as a member (or are just in town for a few days), and show up before a draw, there is always a chance that we can find a spot for you. If you are able to curl for one entire single-entry draw session (six or seven weeks), we may be able to fit you in, too, as sometimes a member may know in advance that they will be absent for a particular draw – contact the Club Manager. In all these cases, “drop-in” curlers (or their skips who contacted them) are required to pay the drop-in rate at the bar before going on the ice, and skips are required to let the bartender know that a drop-in spare is being used.

Drop-in rates are $10 per game for ALL adult curlers for both evening and daytime draws, or $5 for juniors, taxes in. For those who “drop-in” frequently for the daytime draws, a pack of 10 drop-in fees is available at a discounted rate of $80.

The 10 am daytime draw, where teams are made up each day as players arrive, is a special case. Club members regularly in the draw have discs that they drop in a cup labeled with the position that they want to play. Drop-in (non-members) for this draw are required to obtain a chit for this purpose from the office by paying the  drop-in fee. It will have their name on it, and will be turned in by the drawmaster to the office after it is used.

Whitecap Jr. Curling Camp underway at Cornwall’s APM Centre

Curl PEI Photo: Former Canadian Junior champion Brett Gallant instructing at Whitecap Curling Camp on Monday

Curl Atlantic‘s Whitecap Junior Curling Camp continues through August 23 at the APM Centre in Cornwall PEI, with 96 curlers from across Atlantic Canada taking part. Campers are staying at a University of Prince Edward Island residence. There are three categories of participants – Intermediate (age 12-14), Advanced (age 15-17), and High Performance (age 16-18 with 6+ years of competitive experience).

The APM Centre will be hosting the 2013 through 2015 camps, with an option for 2016 as well.

Previous attendees of the camp include Brett Gallant, 2009 Canadian Junior Champion and Whitecap Instructor, who says that the training he received at the camp helped him advance to the championship level: “No question – the training I received from the Whitecap Curling Camp propelled me to a Canadian Championship. I think every aspiring champion needs to experience this camp.” Gallant is back instructing at the camp again this year.

The camp also gives the curlers much-needed experience curling on arena ice. Curlers in Atlantic Canada generally play in curling clubs only, and may be at a disadvantage when participating in larger events, including Canadian championships, usually held in arenas, so this camp gives them a chance to play in this type of venue.

For more information on Whitecap contact Helen Radford, Curl Atlantic at (902) 497-6655 or curlatlantic2001@gmail.com.

Great weather, great times at annual Club golf tourney

The weather couldn’t have been better for this year’s Club golf tournament at beautiful Countryview Golf Club with sunny skies, light winds, and temperatures in the mid-20’s. Approximately 60 golfers hit the links at 10 am in our first-ever “shotgun” start (although it sounded more like a horn to me!).

Here’s the Bill Hope rink foursome finishing play on the 9th hole. A “best ball” format was used for the other holes, but this one had special rules – only a 9 iron could be used until the green, with players alternating shots.

dsc00105

Meanwhile, on the clubhouse deck, Valerie Acorn was cooking up delicious burgers and hot dogs on the ‘cue, and Karen Currie from Countryview was cutting up the dessert.

dsc00107

dsc00109

After the meal, organizers Bob Fowler and Rick Doiron filled the table with great prizes, courtesy of the many event sponsors, including Countryview, KFC, Prebilt Steel, Traction Heavy Duty Parts, and Eastern Auto Supply, and started to hand out the prizes.

dsc00117

dsc00122

They didn’t have to go too far to hand out the first prize, as the men’s Longest Drive honours went to “Boston” Rick!

dsc00123

Gord Peters won the men’s Closest to the Pin honours:

dsc00124

Lisa Arsenault won the women’s Longest Drive, while no woman managed to hit the green and capture the Closest to the Pin prize, so a draw was made, and Sue Doiron (who actually put her shot in the water) was awarded the prize.

Remember the 9 iron 9th hole that we talked about earlier? Well, Rick’s team somehow managed to par it, and got a special prize:

Only one prize remained, for the winning team. This year’s winners, with a score of 35, were the foursome of Carl Currie, Valerie Acorn, Carlene Peters, and Ankur Deshpande.

Following the awards to the winners, the rest of the prizes were drawn for, with very few people going home empty handed! Bob, who has been organizing the event for many years, thanked everybody for attending, and extended an invitation to anyone who would like to run it next year. He thanked the Curries and Countryview for again hosting the event, thanked the sponsors, and everyone who helped out, and hoped to see everyone back on the ice at the curling club in mid-October. Incoming curling club president Paul Neima thanked Bob and the organizers for another great event! Have a great summer everyone!

Revised Golf Tourney draw for Saturday June 22

countryviewhole

The current forecast for Saturday June 22 is sunny and 22 degrees, so things are shaping up perfectly for our annual 9-hole, best ball tourney at beautiful Countryview Golf Course, route 19 in Fairview.

There have been some draw changes, so please take note of this revised version. Please note: for the first time, we are using a “shotgun start”, with all foursomes teeing off at 10 am. All golfers are requested to be at Countryview by 9:30 to ensure time to make your way to your respective tee boxes.

We remind you again that, should you require a power cart, call Countryview now and reserve, as there is another tournament that day and there could be a shortage.

There will be a longest drive for men and women, plus a closest to the pin for men and women. Last year we had the ninth hole that players could only use a 7 iron, this year we are going to draw for which hole that will happen and what iron will be used. All the holes from 1 to 9 and irons from 5 to 9 will be put in a hat and drawn out before we tee off to see which iron will be used and what hole it will be used on.

There will be a BBQ after with hot dogs, hamburgers and dessert, plus lots of prizes!

The 2013 Scholarship recipients are:

Prince Edward Island ($500 each): Katie Fullerton, Chloe McCloskey, Alex Sutherland
Nova Scotia ($500 each): Katarina Hakansson, Alex Rafuse, Alex Trites
Newfoundland and Labrador ($500 each): Zackary Parsons, Colin Thomas, Stephen Trickett

The 2013 Capital Grant recipients will each receive $1500. The successful curling clubs are:
Woodstock Golf and Curling Club, NB

The 2013 Program Initiative grant will be used to license the “Rocks and Rings” elementary school program throughout Atlantic Canada. “This joint initiative between Curl Atlantic and the Canadian Curling Association (CCA) appears to fit well with the intent of junior curling development of the Joyce Myers Trust Fund and with Curl Atlantic”, said Roy Hodder, Chair of Curl Atlantic. “The Rocks and Rings program is a great way to introduce and bring curling to the school setting. The program has received much attention during the televising of the CCA’s championship events, and is hugely popular across the country and in great demand.”

Ruth Stavert

Ruth Stavert is a Cornwall Curling Club stick curler, who, with her teammate Eileen Blanchard, won the 10 team women’s division at the Canadian 2-Person Stick Curling Championships at their home club in April. With teammate Gloria Clarke, she won the Provincial Women’s Stick Championship for the fourth time, the only winners in its four year history, and went on to the Maritime championships in Montague, winning it, too. With Blanchard, she won gold at the Vogue Optical Provincial 55+ Games women’s division, giving Stavert a complete sweep of Provincial, Maritime, and National women’s stick curling championship events.

In the summer months, Stavert participates in a number of sports that bear some similarity to stick curling, taking home bronze medals in the provincial 55+ Summer Games bocce and lawn bowling events last summer, and, with Clarke, winning a gold in the “washer toss” event.

Rod MacDonald

Rod MacDonald skipped two provincial championship teams and one runner-up this season, going undefeated to win the Credit Unions of PEI Senior Men’s title, winning the provincial Mixed championship, and coming second in the Tankard provincial men’s. And, for the first time, he got to compete in a national championship in his home town, finishing fourth after losing out in a tiebreaker at the Canadian Mixed at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside. MacDonald and his Mixed team, which includes his wife, Karen, his sister Kathy O’Rourke, and her husband Mark, are looking forward to competing in the Canadian Mixed,  November 14-23 at the Rideau Curling Club in Ottawa.

To-date, MacDonald has won three provincial Mixed titles, two Senior Men’s, and seven Tankards, winning his first three playing on a team skipped by his brother Peter in 1978,  1981, and 1996, and then skipping his own team to wins in 2005, 2006, 2009, and 2010.

Cornwall to host Provincial Seniors, Under 13 next season

Curl PEI held its Annual General Meeting this evening at the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club in Summerside. Among the changes for next season was the change of both the Provincial Mixed and Credit Unions of PEI Senior Men’s and Women’s championship events from 10 to 8 ends. The national events that these championships lead to are still 10 ends in length, although there are proposals in the works that may move them to 8. Last year’s provincial entries were consulted, and the majority agreed with the change. Cornwall will be hosting the Seniors next season, from February 20-24.

Another change was with the youngest division, the KFC Under 13, which Cornwall will also be hosting next season, from March 6-10. It was decided to have open entry – any combination of boys and girls on a team, instead of the current separate boys and girls divisions. The U13 funspiel, which is designed for curlers in the age category who are just beginning the sport, will remain as well. The provincial Masters, for curlers age 60 and over, will move to a weekend event in the 2014-2015 season.

The venues and dates for next season’s provincial championships were approved.

Tee-off  is at 10 am. Please be onsite by 9:30 to get signed up, find out the rules, and make your way to the appropriate tee box for the shotgun start. All the holes from 1 to 9 and irons from 5 to 9 will be put in a hat and drawn out before we tee off to see which iron will be used and what hole it will be used on.

Cornwall’s Roddie MacLean/Paul Field Stick duo up for Team of the Year at ADL/Sport PEI awards

The final category for the ADL/Sport PEI curling awards is “Team of the Year”. This year’s finalists are the Rod MacDonald-skipped Senior Men’s team out of the Charlottetown Curling Complex and the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club, and this year’s Canadian Stick Curling champions, the Roddie MacLean and Paul Field duo from the Cornwall Curling Club. The winning “Team of the Year” will be announced at the awards, being held Wednesday May 29 at the Silver Fox in Summerside in conjunction with Curl PEI’s Annual General Meeting, which will take place first (with a meal) at 5:30 pm, with the award presentations following at about 7:15 pm. Everyone is welcome to attend – there is no cost. Attendees are required to RSVP to Curl PEI Executive Director Amy Duncan today (Friday, May 24) at aduncan@sportpei.pe.ca or 902-368-4208.

macleanfieldPhoto: Roddie MacLean (left) and Paul Field with the Canadian Stick Curling Championship trophy

When you take up a new sport, you don’t normally expect to win its Canadian Championship in your first season, but that’s exactly what happened to new 2-person stick curlers Roddie MacLean and Paul Field from the Cornwall Curling Club. Both were experienced players of the traditional four-person hack-delivery format, although Field had stepped away from competitive curling for a number of years due to the hours he had to put in at his busy flower shop. When he sold the business, he was looking for something new to do, and discovered tthe relatively new sport of stick curling, teaming up with MacLean, who was also just taking up the sport. They picked the right year to do it, with the Maritime championship taking place only 50 minutes away in Montague, and the national championships being at their home club, the first time it had been held east of Winnipeg.

The duo came incredibly close to winning the provincials, losing the final 4-3 in TWO extra ends to the Walter Callaghan/John Vincent pair from the host Western Community Curling Club, who had won the event three times before and were runners-up last year. Their runner-up finish gave them a berth in the Maritime championships, where they made it as far as the quarter-final round, gaining valuable experience and proving that they could be competitive at the regional level. Their provincial second place finished also gave them a guaranteed spot in the nationals, where they went undefeated in the triple knockout round, pulling off a six-ender in one of their games. Since there are only six rocks per team each end in stick curling, this is the equivalent of a rare eight-ender in traditional curling, and they were awarded with prizes and a patch for this at the closing ceremonies.

The duo managed two wins by one-point margins in the championship round, bringing them to the final against the defending champion Earl Stephenson/Warren Johnson twosome from the St. Vital Curling Club in Winnipeg. The score was 4-2 for the Island pair coming home without last rock advantage, and they stole a deuce for a 6-2 final score to win the Canadian Championship in front of an excited hometown crowd who also got to witness Cornwall teams win the women’s division and the consolation round, and a Montague rink take the bronze medal game.

The team of Rod MacDonald (skip), John Likely (third), Mark O’Rourke (second), and Peter MacDonald (lead) were provincial champions this season in the Credit Unions of PEI Provincial Senior Men’s Curling Championship, and advanced to the Canadian Seniors in Summerside, the hometown of the MacDonald brothers, finishing round robin play tied for third with an 8-3 win-loss record, before losing out in a tiebreaker, realizing skip Rod’s goal of curling in a Canadian championship in his hometown. The other three members of the team all made the all-star teams, determined by their shooting percentages, with Peter MacDonald and O’Rourke making the 1st team all-stars and Likely making the second team.

The experienced team of PEI Tankard veterans was unbeatable at the provincial seniors, going through round robin play with a perfect 5-0 win-loss record to earn a bye to the final, against 2011 PEI Seniors champ Bill Hope, which they won by a 7-4 final score.

Rod MacDonald and his brother-in-law Mark O’Rourke also teamed up with other players to enter the PEI Tankard (with Peter as coach), where they finished as runners-up, and the Provincial Mixed, which they won.

Cornwall’s Strathcona Cup Ctee. are finalists for volunteer administrator of the year at ADL/Sport PEI awards

The two finalists for Volunteer Administrator of the Year at the ADL/Sport PEI curling awards being held Wednesday May 29 at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club, in conjunction with Curl PEI’s Annual General Meeting, are Roger Gavin from the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton, and the PEI Strathcona Cup Organizing Committee from the Cornwall Curling Club.

The Strathcona Cup Tour organizing committee consisted of three couples, all from the Cornwall Curling Club – Roddie and Myriam MacLean, Jim and Diane Farquharson, and Gordon and Shirley Lank. Roddie, Jim and Gordon are the only Island men to have been on previous Strathcona Cup tours to Scotland, and they were prepared to give the Scots a big welcome on the PEI leg of their tour of Canada, with both countries vying to take home the century-old Strathcona Cup, in curling’s oldest international tournament.

The committee began planning work a year prior to the event, which would see the 20 Scots on the Eastern part of the Tour take on Island curlers at Charlottetown, Montague, Cornwall and Crapaud. The committee was responsible for arranging the venues, meals, special guests etc., as well as signing up the players, obtaining sponsors, and fundraising.

Among the events organized were several lunches, and two banquets, one with a Robbie Burns theme, where Roddie MacLean eloquently presided over the “Address to a Haggis” ceremony (click for video). At Cornwall, the Lanks enlisted three generations of their family to help serve the meal, while Gordie personally cooked the tenderloin roast, with the beef produced at his own farm. The evening banquets were followed by entertainment, including a PEI Oyster Society “shucking-in” ceremony, comedy skits, and local musicians.

Scots and Islanders alike deemed the PEI portion of the 2013 Strathcona Cup Tour to be a tremendous success.

Pat Quilty has coached Cornwall’s Rachel O’Connor rink for three years, helping them with their goal of representing PEI in the 2015 Canada Winter Games. He also coached the winning Under 16 Junior Mixed team, which included two members of the O’Connor rink, this season.

Quilty was awarded the Asham Coaching award, which is voted on by all the coaches in the event, in both the Under 18 and Under 16 provincials. The O’Connor rink was very encouraged by the results they attained this year with his assistance, and are looking forward to next season and the upcoming Canada Games trials.

The team noted that Quilty looks for the positive in each player, and is always willing to take the time needed during weekday practices and weekend competitions.
