The New Cornwall Curling Club – a photo tour

Cornwall Curling Club

The spotlight will be on the new Cornwall Curling Club later this month for the Atlantic University Curling Championships from January 13-15, and the Labatt Tankard provincial men’s curling championships from January 26-31.  Work is now complete on the new Cornwall Civic Centre, which houses the clubhouse portion of the curling club, along with the Lions Club, the 50+ club, and a large multipurpose hall. The Centre has been completely rebuilt from the ground up. As well, a separate building has been constructed adjacent to the Civic Centre to house a brand new ice plant for the curling club, along with facilities for the adjacent swimming pool. The ice house portion of the curling club has undergone roof repairs, and has received new viewing windows, a second entranceway to the ice area, new steps and carpeting, and a  ramp, allowing access to the ice surface for wheelchair curling, facilitated by an entrance ramp on the Cornwall Road side of the building, and an elevator between the two levels of the Civic Centre.

Funding for the $2 million Civic Centre reconstruction came from the Building Canada Fund, the Government of Prince Edward Island under Build PEI, the Town of Cornwall, and the Canadian Curling Association’s Capital Grants program. Fitzgerald and Snow were the general contractors for the project, with engineering by CBCL.

The ice house roof repairs, and the ice plant replacement, costing $128,576, was funded via the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program and the Island Community Fund, a six-year $27.5 million program established by the provincial government to address infrastructure needs with a focus on rural communities. The ice plant replacement was done by Berg Chilling Systems of Toronto  Ont., and Cornwall’s Lowther Refrigeration.

Click the link below for a photo tour of the new facility, starting with the upstairs hall, Lions Club and 50+ club areas, and moving downstairs to the curling club.

Tuesday night Competitive League Draw changes

The Angus Kennedy rink has dropped out of the Tuesday evening competitive league, leaving 16 teams. The team that originally had the bye for a particular week will now play the rink that was to play Kennedy. The schedule in the Draws section of CornwallCurling.com has been adjusted to reflect this. At the end of the season, win percentages will be used to determine rankings, based on number of games scheduled per team, so that those who already had a bye will not be penalized.  If the team that originally had the bye cannot make the game on a given night (due to previously-made plans), they should try and play the game in another available time.  If not able to play the game then the team scheduled to play the Kennedy team in the original draw will record the win.

Fullerton, Gallant rinks to represent UPEI at Atlantic Univ. Ch’ships, Jan. 13-15 here in Cornwall

The Cornwall Curling Club, sporting a brand new clubhouse, will host the Atlantic University Curling Championships from January 13-15, 2012, with five men’s teams, and an equal number of women’s rinks taking part. This event will use a double knockout draw, with four teams — the A and B side winners from both the men’s and women’s events, representing the Atlantic region at the CIS/CCA University Championships from March 14-18 in Welland, Ontario.
The teams will practice on Friday, January 13, beginning at 5 pm, with play getting underway on Saturday the 14th, with draws at 9 am and 2 and 7 pm, and wrapping up on Sunday the 15th, with the A finals at 9 am and the B finals at 2 pm. All games in the competititon are 10 ends. The event is organized by Curl Atlantic, the PEI Curling Association, and the Cornwall Curling Club.
Saint Mary’s University won both the Atlantic men’s and women’s titles last year. The SMU women’s team are back with three of the same members, including skip Sarah Rhyno, and third Anita Casey, from Seven Mile Bay PEI, while Colten Steele moves up from second to skip the men’s team this year, which also retains three of last year’s players.
The 2011 CIS/CCA Canadian men’s champions, the Memorial University rink skipped by Colin Thomas, are also in the Atlantic event this year. Last year they gained entry to the nationals in St. John’s as the host team entry, bypassing the Atlantic event. Wilfred Laurier, skipped by Laura Crocker, won the national women’s title last year.
These MUN and Laurier teams will compete as Team Canada in the Karuizawa International Curling Championships in Japan January 25-30, while the winning teams from this year’s CIS/CCA championships will represent Canada at the FISU Winter Universiade in Maribor, Slovenia, January 30-Feb. 9, 2013.

UPEI is represented at this year’s Atlantic event by last year’s women’s runner-up, Cornwall’s  Sarah Fullerton, and her rink of Michelle McQuaid, Hillary Thompson, and Whitney Young, along with former Canadian Junior champion Brett Gallant, whose team in this event includes long-time teammate Alex MacFadyen at third, and Sam Ramsay and Connor MacPhee on the front end. Fullerton, McQuaid, and Thompson were skip, third, and lead respectively on this year’s provincial junior womens championship rink, while Ramsay and MacPhee were skip and second on the junior men’s runner-up team.

Other entries include the Dalhousie team skipped by Adam Casey (Anita’s brother), who were the Atlantic men’s runner-up last year, along with the St. Fx women’s entry skipped by Taylor Clarke, and the Memorial women’s team captained by Erin Porter. The Acadia men’s team is skipped by Robert Mayhew, and coached by 1977 World Junior curling champ and PEI sports and curling hall of fame member Alan Mayhew, while the Lindsay Doucet-skipped Acadia women’s team rounds out the entries.

Cornwall’s Sarah Fullerton and Amanda MacLean rinks advance to Monday morning Pepsi Juniors final

The teams have now been determined for the Pepsi Provincial Junior Women’s sudden death final game, scheduled for 10 am on Monday at the Charlottetown Curling Club, following the completion of double round play Saturday morning, with the top two teams advancing to the final. The Amanda MacLean rink, who curl out of the Cornwall and Maple Leaf clubs, defeated the Emily Keen team from Charlottetown to finish the round robin in second place, with a 4-2 win-loss record, while the two-time defending champion Sarah Fullerton rink from Charlottetown and Cornwall stole a triple in the extra end in an exciting 8-5 come-from-behind victory over Cornwall’s Veronica Smith rink, to grab first place with a 5-1 record.

The Smith rink, which includes Fullerton’s sister Katie at third, had beaten the Fullerton foursome earlier in the competition, and led this game 5-3 after eight ends of play. Fullerton took a single in the 9th, and forced the extra by stealing a point in ten.

The winner of Monday’s final between Fullerton and MacLean will advance to the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, February 4-12, 2012, in Napanee Ontario.

Meanwhile, the host club rink of skip Alex Matters, who calls the game but throws third stones, Chris Gallant, who throws fourth stones,  second Kyle Holland, and lead Andrew Cameron, with coaches Peter Gallant and Derrick Cameron, edged their clubmates, the Sam Ramsay rink by a 7-6 extra end score Saturday afternoon in the first game of the best of three final between these two teams in the Pepsi Provincial Junior Men’s Curling Championships at the Charlottetown Curling Club. Other members of the Ramsay rink are Matthew Nabuurs, Connor MacPhee, and Shawn Pitre, with coach Rob Roberts. Cornwall’s Jeffrey Taylor rink finished the round robin with a 2-3 win-loss record.

The second men’s final, along with the sudden death junior women’s championship game between Sarah Fullerton of the Charlottetown and Cornwall clubs, and Amanda MacLean of the Cornwall and Maple Leaf clubs, go Monday at 10 am, with the third men’s final, if needed, going Monday at 2:30 pm. Wednesday Night Ladder Round Two set to go-Paul Neima and Joerg Soltermann rinks win round 1

Round one of the Wednesday Night Ladder League, sponsored by Don Lowther Snow Removal, and Howard Johnson Dutch Inn, wrapped up on Wednesday, with round two, sponsored by Cornwall Pizza Delight and Clyde River Golf Links starting up this Wednesday, the 21st.

The Paul Neima rink finished in first place in the A pool in round one, winning all five games .
Second and third place get complicated. Bob Fowler had three wins, going into his final game against Angus Kennedy, who had two wins. The two teams tied after eight ends, and did not draw to the button to determine the winner, as is stated in the rules. To resolve the tie, I tossed a coin (with Nancy Yeo as witness), and Angus came out the winner. This meant that both teams now had three wins. Since Angus beat Bob (by winning the coin toss) in their game, he gets second place.
Angus’ “win” left two teams tied for third with two wins each, with one of them to go down the ladder to the B pool for round two. Karen Currie edged Bob MacWilliams 10-9 in their round robin encounter on Nov, 23, so Karen stays in the A pool, and Bob moves down to the B.
Gord Peters was on the injury list early in the season, and his team got off to a slow, and will also move down to the B pool.

Things get even more complicated in the B pool, with two teams joining mid-round. Three teams will move up to the A pool, to give them the bye for the second round.
Joerg Solterman played and won all five of his games, so will be awarded first place.
Greg Groves had three wins, a bye, and a loss, and will be awarded second or third place. (you pick!)
Kris Currie had two decisive wins and a bye, and will also be awarded second or third place.
These three  teams will move up the ladder to  the A pool for the next round.
Ray Biagé had three wins, a loss to Soltermann, and a loss by default to Groves (we borrowed one of their players, and lost on the scoreboard, too!), and will stay in the B pool.
The Colleen Soltermann, Kelly Watts and David Younker teams will also remain in the B pool.
So, after all this, here are the teams for round two:
Pool A (seven teams)
A1-Paul Neima
A2-Angus Kennedy
A3-Bob Fowler
A4-Karen Currie
A5-Joerg Soltermann
A6-Greg Groves
A7-Kris Currie

Pool B (six teams)
Bob MacWilliams
Gord Peters
Ray Biagé
David Younker
Kelly Watts
Colleen Soltermann

For round two, the six team B pool will play a full five week round robin with no byes.
The seven team A pool will have one bye each week, with first byes going to teams that didn’t have one last round, and will play a five week partial round robin, as we can’t have the two pools finishing at different times, or the B pool sitting out two weeks (it would take seven weeks to have each A pool team play all other teams and the bye) or replaying the first two weeks.
As is our custom, we will not play between Christmas and New Year’s.
Here is the draw for round 2
Dec. 21
6:30 pm (Pool A)
Ice 1: A7-Kris Currie vs A2-Angus Kennedy
Ice 2: A5-Joerg Soltermann, vs A4-Karen Currie

Thanks for helping with Moving Day!

A sizable contingent showed up this morning to empty the tractor trailer contents, some into the adjacent dumpster, the rest  into the new Cornwall Curling Club. After some cleaning and rearranging, most everything was in its new location by noon. A few things to hang, a few things to “make fit”, a bar to open, and things will soon be back to normal! Thanks to everyone who helped out today!

Update on Peake & McInnis league: new dates, more info

A new league, sponsored by Peake & McInnis Ltd. Insurance Brokers is being set up to run Sundays at 5 and 7 pm from  December 18th to January 22nd.  Note that there is no additional charge for paid-up Cornwall Curling Club members to participate in this league.  Note also that this is just another opportunity to prepare for the club playdowns for The Dominion. If you already have a team in another league that you plan to enter into the playdowns, they don’t have to join this league, too (but they can!).

This league is designed to offer our club curlers not already playing as a team in another league draw an opportunity to play as a team in a league event to meet the eligibility requirements of the Dominion Club playoffs being held February 3, 4, and 5, 2012. The league is open to the first 12 teams.  Teams registering for this league must play a minimum of four (4) of the draw times to be deemed having met the requirements for our 2012 Dominion Club.

To register a team or for more information, contact Bev at 566-4427 or Karen at 675-2563.  Deadline for registration has been extended to December 15th.

Wednesday night Ladder League B pool draw changes for last two weeks of round one

With the addition of the seventh team, and only two weeks left in round one, it will be a little difficult to figure out the results, but we’ll find a way!

We need byes for December 7th and 14th. Colleen Soltermann had the bye the first week, when we had five teams (but she played an exhibition game against Lorianne Davies). David Younker and Kris Currie, who joined the league later, have had their byes, and Kelly Watts requested a bye on the 14th, so that left three possible teams for the December 7 bye – Joerg Soltermann, Ray Biagé, and Greg Groves. I drew one team at random (random.org), and Greg Groves will have the bye. I then put the Currie team in their slot for that week and in Kelly’s slot for the final week.

Here are the final two weeks of round one for the B pool (no changes to A):

Week Five: Dec 7 at 8:30 pm (Pool B)

Ice 1: B2-Joerg Soltermann
vs B4-Kelly Watts

Ice 2: B1-Ray Biagé
vs B3- Colleen Soltermann

Ice 3: B7-Kris Currie
vs B6-David Younker

Bye: Greg Groves

Week 6: December 14 at 6:30 (Pool B)

Ice 1: B1 Ray Biagé
vs B6-David Younker

Ice 2: B2-Joerg Soltermann
vs B5-Greg Groves

Ice 3: B7-Kris Currie
vs Colleen Soltermann

Bye: Kelly Watts

Note that the bye will move to the A pool for the next round, which means that two teams will move down the ladder, and three will move up.

A new league, sponsored by Peake & McInnis Ltd. Insurance Brokers is being set up to run Sundays at 5 and 7 pm from  December 11th to January 22nd.

The league is open to the first 12 teams.  Teams registering for this league must play in four (4) of the draw times to be deemed having met the requirements.

To register a team or for more information  contact Bev at 566-4427 or Karen at 675-2563.  Deadline for registration is December 8th.

New Wednesday Ladder League team added – room for more!

We welcome the team of Kris Currie, Shawn Delong, Dan MacRae and Jamie Currie to the Wednesday night ladder league. We will put them in the B pool to start, and will have to give them the bye for this week in order to have time to redo the draw for next Wednesday (draw is due to Guardian by 5 pm and I have to work!). We would really like another team (or three!)  in order to eliminate the weekly bye, so it you are interested in curling together as a team on Wednesday evenings, please let us know! The first round draw results are going to be “interesting” to calculate, so bear with us, as we will get things settled down by round two! As it sits now, the pool with the extra team (will rotate throughout the season between B and A pools)  won’t play everyone in a round, so that both pools can finish at same time.

Here’s the draw for this week:

Evening Ladder League

6:30 pm (Pool B)

Ice 1: Joerg Soltermann vs David Younker

Ice 2: Colleen Soltermann vs Greg Groves

Ice 3: Ray Biagé vs Kelly Watts

Bye: Kris Currie

8:30 pm (Pool A)

Ice 1: Bob MacWilliams vs Bob Fowler

Ice 2: Karen Currie vs Paul Neima

Ice 3: Angus Kennedy vs Gord Peters

Cornwall’s Davies ends play with 1-5 record, as The Dominion women’s playoff scenarios set

(CCA) When the dust settled, the scene was set for just one tie-breaker game in the women’s field at The Dominion Curling Club Championship in Richmond, B.C.

A log-jam at the top of the leaderboard was broken when Ontario defeated Saskatchewan in Draw 13 action.

Ontario front end Kelly Williams and Jeni Mah carry skip Jodi McCutcheon’s rock down the ice in a crucial 7-5 win over Saskatchewan (Photo Yadranka Thompson and The Dominion)

Saskatchewan (4-2) had a chance to prevent any tie-breakers with a victory over Ontario, but High Park skip Jodi McCutcheon stole two in the eighth end to win 7-5 and clinch first place with a 6-0 record.  Saskatchewan skip Patricia Yeske of Hillcrest Curling Club didn’t even have a chance to win with her final shot—the best she could have done was make an angle double-takeout for a blank and force an extra end.  Her shot sailed wide, giving Ontario the win, and a berth in Sunday morning’s semi-final (9 AM PST).

Saskatchewan will play Quebec tonight at 8 PM PST in the tie-breaker to determine the second playoff team in the “Blue” pool.

Sylvye Turgeon and her Quebec squad, sitting with a 4-2 record, stayed alive with a 6-5 win over Frankie Amos and her foursome from the Mayflower in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

In the “Grey” pool there are no tie-breakers.  Manitoba’s Meghan Armit clinched first place with a decisive 7-2 win over Alberta, knocking Kendra Nakagama out of the playoffs.  Manitoba (5-1) will face Northern Ontario (5-1) in the Sunday’s semi-final, after Melanie Patry of Coniston Curling Club beat B.C. 10-2.  The Manitoba win eliminated New Brunswick (4-2) from playoff contention, despite Shannon Tatlock’s 8-2 win over Northwest Territories, which included a 7-ender in the fourth end.

In the other game in Draw 13, Newfoundland and Labrador beat PEI 6-5 when the foursome from the Remax Centre in St. John’s was able to blank the eighth and run Cornwall Curling Club’s Lorianne Davies out of rocks. Davies ends play with a 1-5 record.

Summerside’s own Mike Gaudet, third on last year’s MacKenzie rink, is skipping a team in the event, backed up by Tyler MacKenzie, Tyler Harris, and Sean Clarey. The Gaudet foursome were runners-up at the recent Rodd Curling Classic cashspiel in Charlottetown. Other Island rinks are skipped by Robert Campbell, Rod MacDonald, Cornwall’s Donna Butler (the only women’s rink in the event),  Robert Shaw, and Jamie Newson.

Davies 1-4, Clarey 2-3 at The Dominion going into final round robin draw

It doesn’t look like Cornwall’s Lorianne Davies rink or Montague’s Donald Clarey foursome will advance to the playoff round at The Dominion in Richmond BC. Going into their final round robin games today against Newfoundland and Labrador, Davies is at 1-4, while Clarey sits at 2-3.

Stories from yesterday (CCA):

New Brunswick’s women played ‘giant killers’ in Draw 10 of The Dominion Curling Club Championship in Richmond, B.C. Shannon Tatlock’s squad from the Beausejour Curling Club knocked off previously unbeaten Manitoba 6-2.

Team New Brunswick at The Dominion Curling Club Championship

Tatlock made a perfect for two in the 5th, then broke the game open in the 7th, executing a perfect board-weight hit through a port to score three. “The port was staggered, so I had to throw quiet weight to make that shot.” New Brunswick improves their record to 2 and 2. Manitoba falls to 4 and 1, but they’re still in first place in the “Grey” pool.

Ontario’s Jodi McCutcheon is the only undefeated team left in the women’s division, at 4-0 in the “Blue” pool after a Draw 10 bye.

In other games, Northern Ontario kept their “Grey” pool playoff hopes alive with a 9-3 win over Northwest Territories to improve their record to 3 and 1. British Columbia (2-2) bounced back from a heartbreaking loss Wednesday night to beat The Yukon 10-1.

Saskatchewan is now at 4 and 1 in the “Blue” pool, needing an extra end to beat Newfoundland 6-4. Pam Osborne of St. John’s had a chance to win it in the 8th, but her tap attempt came up inches short, forcing an extra end. Quebec (3-1) is also in the playoff hunt in the “Blue” pool after a 10-1 win over Nunavut.

Nova Scotia won their first game after four losses, beating PEI 5-4 in an extra end.

In men’s play from Thursday morning, Newfoundland and Labrador knocked Saskatchewan from the ranks of the unbeaten men’s teams with a 7-4 win over Saskatchewan’s Brad Bibby.

Newfoundland and Labrador is now 3 and 1 in the “Blue” pool, while Saskatchewan falls to 4-1. Ontario had the bye, and remains 4-0. There was also a big upset in the “Grey” pool, as TheYukon stole 2 in the 8th end to beat B.C. 6-4. The Yukon is now 3 and 2, while B.C. falls to 2 and 2.

Manitoba leads the “Grey” pool at 4 and 1 after a 7-4 win over New Brunswick. Nova Scotia picked up their first win, upsetting PEI 7-4, Nunavut scored 5 in the first on their way to a 12-4 win over Quebec, and Northern Ontario beat Northwest Territories 7-4.

PEI men and women wrap up round robin play on Friday against Newfoundland and Labrador.

Can anybody stop the Ontario’s red-hot Greg Balsdon team at the Dominion Curling Club Championship in Richmond, B.C.?

So far five teams have tried, and all of them have come away bloodied and beaten.

Team Ontario at The Dominion Curling Club Championship (Photo Yadranka Thompson and The Dominion)

Balsdon’s crackerjack unit from Richmond Hill remained the only unbeaten team in the national club championship Thursday afternoon after defeating Donald Clarey’s Prince Edward Island outfit 5-3 to remain atop the Blue Pool and secure at least a tie-breaker position in the race for Saturday’s playoffs. Balsdon has one game left to play and knows the worst that can happen is a tiebreaker.

The top two teams in each pool advance to the playoffs.

The loss effectively knocked Clarey out of the playoff hunt with his third loss of the competition.

Davies 1-2, Clarey 2-1 after Wednesday action at The Dominion

Ontario and Saskatchewan men are 4-0 after Wednesday play at The Dominion Curling Club Championship in Richmond BC. Five teams have only one loss, including Montague PEI’s Donald Clarey foursome, who lost 7-2 to Saskatchewan in the late draw. In the afternoon, PEI scored a deuce in the final end of a low-scoring game to edge the Nunavut team 4-3.

On the women’s side, Cornwall’s Lorianne Davies team are 1-2 after Wednesday play, winning  their morning game 9-3 over Nunavut, but losing their afternoon contest against Saskatchewan by an 11-3 score. Ontario and Manitoba are on-top in the women’s section, at 4-0.

Play continues today, with the Island rinks taking on Nova Scotia and Ontario.

Cornwall’s Davies rink picks up a win at The Dominion

Cornwall’s Lorianne Davies rink picked up their 1st win this afternoon at The Dominion Curling Club Championship – a 9-3 victory over Nunavut. The Island rink, now 1-1, took a triple in the 5th end, and followed it with a stolen single and deuce in the next two ends. PEI’s men’s rink, skipped by Donald Clarey of Montague, are 1-0, and are on the ice now against the Nunavut men’s team.

The Island rinks will play Saskatchewan later today.

Davies sees first action (and a great photo!) at The Dominion

(CCA) The leaders are starting to emerge after two draws on the women’s side of The Dominion Curling Club Championship at the Richmond Curling Club in Richmond, B.C.

Manitoba skip Meghan Armit of the Winnipeg Granite Club scored a 16-2 win over the Yukon in the evening draw, after opening with a 6-5 win over B.C., skipped by Deb Goodwin of Comox Valley.

The Yukon team, (skip Sherry MacInnis, third Bev Murphy, second JoAnne Snobelen and lead Janis Harper), which plays out of tiny Atlin, B.C. (population 400, just south of the Yukon/B.C. border) took the loss in stride. Their home club only put their ice in a few weeks ago, so the foursome haven’t had much chance to play before travelling to Richmond. But they’re enjoying the experience, and they’re one of the top fundraisers of all the teams in the event, which raises money for the Canadian Paraplegic Association.

Joining Manitoba are Ontario (6-5 over Nova Scotia in the evening draw), Northern Ontario and Quebec, all tied atop the women’s standings at 2-0.

In other Draw 4 action, Nunavut and Saskatchewan traded steals, but a big 3 by the team from the Hillcrest Curling Club in Moose Jaw resulted in a 6-3 victory for Saskatewan’s Patricia Yeske over Nunavut’s Kristy Hewitt.

Northern Ontario and Alberta battled in a close game won by Coniston Curling Club’s Melanie Patry over Lethbridge’s Kendra Nakagama, 5-4.

Lorianne Davies calls the line

British Columbia opened scoring with 4 in the first end, setting up a tough start for the team from the Northwest Territories, playing their first game after a bye in Draw 2. Inuvik Curling Club’s Diane Baxter scored singles in the second and fourth ends, but another big 3 by B.C. in the third sealed the win with a final score of 11-2.

Prince Edward Island’s foursome from the Cornwall Curling Club also played their first game after a bye in Draw Two. Despite a big score of 3 in the third end, they fell to Sylvye Turgeon’s Quebec team by a score of 6-4.

PEI rinks split openers at The Dominion

PEI rinks had the opening round bye at The Dominion Curling Club Championship in Richmond BC, but saw action against the Quebec teams in round two, with Montague’s Donald Clarey foursome stealing the last two ends to edge the Quebecers 6-5, while Cornwall’s Lorianne Davies rink fell victim to a stolen deuce in end seven, losing their game by a 6-4 score. The PEI teams play Nunavut and Saskatchewan today. Sask. are 2-0 in the men’s section.

Here’s the highlight reel from the Tuesday opening ceremonies:

At the opening ceremonies, Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie joined an all-star lineup of curlers for the throwing of the official “first rock”. Paralympic and Canadian Wheelchair champion Daryl Neighbour threw the rock, with The
Dominion Branding Coordinator Leigh Armstrong holding the broom.

Fullerton, Ramsay win finals of Maritime Junior Fall Fling Cashspiel (Journal)

By Nancy MacPhee.

SUMMERSIDE – It was a nail-biting comeback for the Sarah Fullerton rink.

Fullerton and her teammates bounced back from a 5-0 deficit after five ends to force an extra end en route to winning the Maritime Junior Fall Fling
cashspiel at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club on Sunday.

Fullerton, who curls out of the Cornwall Curling Club and is the reigning P.E.I. junior women’s champ, beat clubmate Veronica Smith 9-8 in 11 ends.

“We struggled a little bit with the ice conditions,” said Fullerton. “It was a little straighter than the rest of the week.

“We weren’t really playing that bad. It was just the other team was making really good shots when they counted, and not leaving us anything.”

Sam Ramsay

Journal-Pioneer photo: Sam Ramsay yells instructions to his sweepers during the Maritime Junior Fall Fling cashspiel final at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club on Sunday afternoon.

On the men’s side, the Sam Ramsay rink from the Charlottetown Curling Club beat the Maple Leaf Curling Club’s Matthew MacLean rink to 8-4 in eight ends.

Ramsay, from Summerside, entered the final 4-1 (won-lost). His lone loss came to MacLean.

“I think a lot of it was just the kind of weight that we played, keeping it nice and light in parts that were straight and in parts that were curling more,
play a bit more weight,” said Ramsay. “It was just little simple things like try not to crash on the guards, and just the little things that we’ve been working on all year.”

Fullerton fights back from 5-0 deficit to win all-Cornwall Fox Fall Fling Final over Smith in extra end

The Fall Fling Junior Cashspiel wrapped up this afternoon at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside, with 24 teams from across the Maritimes taking part. The men’s and women’s finals came down to four Island rinks, with the Sarah Fullerton rink from Cornwall and Charlottetown fighting back from a 5-0 deficit to edge their Cornwall clubmates the Veronica Smith team 9-8 in an extra end; and the Sam Ramsay rink, who curl out of the Charlottetown Curling Club, but include players from across the Ialand, doubling the Matthew MacLean team from O’Leary’s Maple Leaf club 8-4.

File photo (L-R): Hillary Thompson, Sara MacRae, Michelle McQuaid, Sarah Fullerton

The Fullerton foursome, which includes Michelle McQuaid at third, second Sara MacRae, lead Hillary Thompson, and coach Angela Hodgson, were down 5-0 after five ends of play, after the Smith rink, which includes Sarah’s sister Katie Fullerton at third, Sabrina Smith at second, and lead stone Chloe McCloskey, with coach Paul Smith, took a single in the second end, and stole singles in ends three and five, and a deuce in the fourth end. Fullerton came back with four points in the sixth, kept Smith to one in the seventh, and took two points in the eight to tie the game at six-all. Fullerton stole a deuce in the 9th to grab the lead, but Smith came back with a deuce of her own to force the extra end, where Fullerton scored the winning single.

Fullerton beat Mary Myketyn Driscoll of Truro 7-4 in the semi-finals, while Smith got by Robyn Wile of CFB Halifax 6-4. All four rinks in the semis finished round robin play on Saturday with 4-1 win-loss records.

File photo (L-R): Sam Ramsay, Matthew Nabuurs, Connor MacPhee, Shawn Pitre

In the men’s division final, Summerside native Ramsay, whose team includes Matthew Nabuurs from Montague, Connor MacPhee from Charlottetown, and Shawn Pitre from the Alberton area, and is coached by Rob Roberts and Arnie Nabuurs, was tied at three-all after five ends of play against MacLean. Ramsay pulled ahead with a deuce in six, MacLean took a single in seven, and Ramsay scored a triple in end eight for an 8-4 lead and the game. Other members of the MacLean foursome are Marshall Smallman, Kevin Gallant, and Allen MacLean, with coach Glen MacLean.

In the all-Island semi-finals, Ramsay beat Alex Matters of Charlottetown 8-5, while MacLean defeated Cornwall’s Jeffrey Taylor team 8-2. MacLean went undefeated in the round robin, with a 5-0 win-loss record, while the other three teams in the semis went 4-1.

Three Cornwall rinks in money round today at Silver Fox Junior Cashspiel

Round robin play wrapped up on Saturday at the 24 team Fall Fling junior cashspiel being played at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside.

Four Island rinks lead the men’s section and have advanced to the 9 am Sunday semi-finals. Matthew MacLean of O’Leary’s Maple Leaf Curling Club went undefeated at 5-0,  while Jeffrey Taylor of Cornwall, Alex Matters of Charlottetown, and Sam Ramsay, also curling out of Charlottetown, finished the round robin at 4-1. Jonathan Crouse of Truro was also 4-1, but did not advance to the money round, after tiebreaking rules were applied. This morning’s sem-final matchups see Ramsay take on Matters, and Taylor face MacLean. The finals are at 1.

Two Island teams, and two Nova Scotia rinks have advanced to the semis in the women’s section, all completing the round-robin with 4-1 records. At 9 this morning, Robyn Wile of the CFB Halifax Curling Club will take on Veronica Smith of the Cornwall Curling Club, while Mary Myketyn Driscoll of Truro plays Sarah Fullerton of the Cornwall and Charlottetown clubs, with the winners advancing to the 1 pm finals.

Sunday’s games are 10 ends, and everyone is invited to the Fox to see the Maritime’s best junior teams in action.

Memorial fund launch on Monday for former club member Stephen Turner

Stephen Turner is a former Cornwall Curling Club member who passed away when his car left the road in New Brunswick in April 2010. He was 27, and it was determined that he died of natural causes. At the time, he was Executive Assistant to Education Minister Doug Currie.  A memorial fund/scholarship is being set up in his honour, and is being launched with a wine and cheese fundraiser on Monday Nov. 21 from 5-7 pm at Simple Pleasures Catering, Grafton Street location. Tickets are $20 and are available at the door, or by emailing Jamie MacPhail at jxmacphail@gov.pe.ca.

The scholarship will be awarded annually to a PEI post-secondary student who has shown interest within, and commitment to the political process and community organizations on the Island.

Cornwall and Montague teams ready to rock at The Dominion Curling Club Championship in Richmond BC

The Prince Edward Island teams departing for the Richmond BC Curling Club this weekend to compete in the national The Dominion Curling Club Championship are not new to the event, as men’s team skip Donald Clarey and third Larry Richards from Montague also represented the Island last year. The Lorianne Davies women’s rink from Cornwall were also involved, as volunteers at their curling club, one of the two venues for last year’s national championship.

The Dominion Curling Club Championship, now in its third season, is an annual event for men’s and women’s curling teams who have won their respective local club championships and their provincial “The Dominion” event. Teams come from all 10 provinces and 3 territories, plus a separate entry for Northern Ontario.

The event, fully funded by The Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company (The Dominion), is the ultimate experience for club curlers.  Provincial and territorial champions receive travel, hotel, accommodations, meals, on-ice jackets and shirts as well as a championship banner to hang  in their home club – all courtesy of The Dominion.  As well, the event raises money for the Canadian Paraplegic Association. Last year in PEI, $30,000 was raised for the CPA. For more information on the event, visit thedominioncurls.ca.

Teams will be arriving in Richmond over the weekend, with the opening draw Tuesday Nov. 22 at 10 am BC time. Round robin play ends Friday with the 12:30 pm draw, and the final goes Saturday the 26th at 2 pm Pacific time.

Here are profiles of the PEI teams:

Photo (L-R): Donald Clarey (skip), Larry Richards (3rd), David Rice (2nd), Steven MacLeod (lead)

The Men’s Prince Edward Island Team for The Dominion Curling Club Championship hails from The Montague Curling Club. It consists of Donald Clarey, Skip; Larry Richards, Third; David Rice, Second; and Steven MacLeod, Lead.

This team is no stranger to The Dominion Curling Club Championship, as Richards (third) and Clarey (Skip) travelled to Charlottetown and Cornwall last year as members of the PEI team. While the team didn’t have far to go in 2010, travelling just over 50km to reach the championship, this year will be quite different. The team is thrilled to be travelling to Richmond, BC together; for most team members, this will be their first trip to western Canada.

Both Richards and Clarey welcomed their two new team members for this year, and were excited with the prospect of showing their new teammates success. As Clarey said:

“We have a new front end (Rice and MacLeod) and really the best part of winning the Island and getting to B.C. was their pure joy and excitement. That was something I will never forget.”

The PEI team usually plays in their home club once a week. Before their club championship and provincial play downs, they spent more time working on their curling – entering a few extra games and getting together for more practices. The men are also involved in their club behind the scenes: Donald has held many positions over the years at The Montague Curling Club, including the role of President twice, and Larry is the Club manager for the current season, and has been the Ice Tech at the club for 8 years. He is touted as one of the best Ice Techs in the Maritimes.

The team is looking forward to seeing friends they met at the 2010 The Dominion Curling Club Championships, and meeting their competitors, the volunteers, and The Dominion employees involved. As Richards said, “Curling is such a social sport that you have time to get to meet and make new friends.” They are looking forward to inviting their new friends to join them in their post-game tradition, a cold drink.

Photo (L-R): Lynda Turnbull (lead),  Tracy MacDonald (2nd), Melody Beck (3rd), Lorianne Davies (skip)

The Women’s Prince Edward Island Team (Team Davies) for The Dominion Curling Club Championship hails from the Cornwall Curling Club. It consists of Lorianne Davies, Skip; Melody Beck, Third; Tracy MacDonald, Second; and Lynda Turnbull, Lead.

The four friends formed a team two years ago with the intention of having fun together both on and off the ice. Team Davies not only enjoyed each others’ company, but also found almost instant success as competitors. The team came incredibly close to playing in the 2010 Championship, but was defeated in last year’s provincial final. In 2011, the ladies came back with the goal of winning the Provincial Playdowns – and were successful.

Not only have the four women won two club championships, but Lynda (Lead) and Lorianne (Skip) are three-time Cornwall Curling Club champions with back-to-back wins starting in 2009.

Before each match, the women have a pre-game powwow where they bump fists and say to each other “good game, girls”.

Individually, the team members are involved with a number of community organizations ranging from coaching curling, to local community theatre, environmental groups, chairing the board of a national historic site and helping out with the P.E.I. Special Olympics.

Last year, the whole team saw The Dominion Curling Club Championship from the volunteer side of the glass when the tournament was held in Charlottetown and Cornwall. They are eager to participate as players this year.

Team Davies is most looking forward to walking out on the ice at the opening ceremonies holding their PEI flag and wearing the provincial jackets – a dream they thought might never come true.

“Before The Dominion Curling Club Championship was created, playing at a national was a dream we did not expect to realize.”

Cornwall’s Jeffrey Taylor rink runners-up to Alex Matters team at Sackville NB Jr. Spiel

(The Guardian) The Alex Matters foursome from Charlottetown went undefeated to win the 20 and Under division of the Sackville Junior Open cashspiel in Sackville, NB, over the weekend.

Matters defeated Jeff Taylor of Cornwall 5- 2 in the final.

The game was highlighted by a double takeout that buried to steal one point in the sixth end by mate Christopher Gallant, who throws fourth stone for Matters.

Gallant then drew to the four-foot for the win in the final end.

Other members of the Matters rink, which is the reigning Atlantic under- 18 boys’ champion, are second Kyle Holland, lead Andrew Cameron and coach Peter Gallant.

The next event on the junior circuit is the Fall Fling this weekend at the Silver Fox club in Summerside.

Wednesday Evening Ladder League set to go!

We`re back for another season of the Wednesday Evening Ladder League, starting THIS Wednesday, Nov. 9. There`s a drop in the number of teams from last year, and an odd number (11), which means there will be one bye each week. If another team (or three!) would like to sign up, please do, so that everyone can play every week!

Here are the team rosters (please send me corrections):

1 Gordon Peters, Hank Kamphuis, Gerald Dykerman, Pat MacInnis

2 Ray Biagé, Rebecca Rolfe, Bob Wellman, Derek MacEwen

3 Paul Neima, Brad Gardiner, Mike Lafontaine, Dwayne MacNeil

4 Bob MacWilliams, John Berry, Roy Coffin, Jim Farqhuarson

5 Karen Currie, Valerie Acorn, Mark Perry, Leonard Gotell

6 Angus Kennedy, Linda Matthews, TBA, TBA

7 Bob Fowler, Paul Durant, Jamie Ballem, Alan Acorn

8 Colleen Soltermann, Susan Carruthers, Sandie Williamson, Theresa Finkle

9 Kelly Watts, Cathy Handren, Krista Affleck, TBA

10 Joerg Soltermann, Lew Black, Hans Wicki, Dan Delaney

11 Greg Groves, Winston Bryan, Donald Weeks, Frank Weiler

Looking at the calendar, between now and the end of March, I count 20 weeks, after excluding the week between Christmas and New Years. Since we will have two pools, of six and five teams, this means that it takes five weeks to run a round, so we will have four rounds of five weeks this season. We will start with the A pool having six teams, and the B pool five. At the end of each round, one team from the five-team pool will move up (if in B) or down (if in A) the ladder to the other pool, while two teams will move from the six team pool, so the A and B pools will alternate having five or six teams (unless, of course, another team arrives). In order to fit in all the weeks, and since all teams but one are returning teams, I have decided to forgo Qualifier Night, and have divided the teams by having all the teams who won a prize last year for finishing at the top of their pool go into the A pool, while those who didn’t will go to the B, so the first round robin will commence on November 9th. Like we did last year, the A and B pools will alternate draw slot times. We will use sheets one through three only, and one of the 3 sheets will be empty each night when the five team pool plays. Shorthanded teams from both pools are expected to use players from the Bye team if at all possible.

Here are the rounds.

Round One: Nov 9, 16, 23, 30, Dec 7

Round Two: Dec 14, 21, Jan 4, 11, 18

Round Three: January  25, February 1, 8, 15, 22

Round Four: Feb 29, March 7, 14, 21, 28

Here are the pools for round one:
