O’Rourke clinched her berth in the final Friday night, going through round robin play with a perfect record. Berry, with a 2-1 record in the five team round robin,  had a lock on one of the two semi-final spots by that time as well, leaving only one spot in the championship round to be decided in this afternoon’s final round robin draw, with Kim Dolan squaring off against Charlottetown clubmate Lisa Jackson. Both teams had 1-2 records going into the game, which Dolan won by a 7-2 score to advance to this evening’s semi.

Jackson opened the scoring with a deuce in two, but Dolan scored a single in the third, and stole the rest of the game, with a single, a deuce, and another single in the next three ends to lead 5-2 after six, and another deuce in eight to bring the game to an early end.

The other game this afternoon had no affect on the results, but gave defending champion Suzanne Birt her only win in the event, by an 8-2 score over Berry. Birt was leading 3-1 after 4, when she pulled off a 5-ender. Berry scored a single in the sixth end,  but it was handshake time, with an 8-2 final score for Birt.

The winner of Sunday afternoon’s final will advance to the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts, February 1-9 at the Maurice Richard Arena, Montreal, QC.\

Cornwall’s Shirley Berry rink will advance to the PEI Scotties semi-finals

There’s now only one undefeated team at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts Provincial Women’s Curling Championship following tonight’s round robin play at the Charlottetown Curling Complex. The Kathy O’Rourke rink from the host club handed the Shirley Berry foursome from the Cornwall and  Silver Fox clubs their first loss tonight, by an 8-3 score in 8 ends. O’Rourke improves to 4-0, while Berry goes to 2-1. O’Rourke scored four deuces, including a steal, in the game, while Berry scored singles only.

img_1401

(L-R): Shirley Berry, Shelley Ebbett, Karen Currie

O’Rourke, whose team includes Robyn Green, who throws fourth stones, along with Meaghan Hughes, who throws third, lead Tricia Affleck, and alternate Stefanie Clark, along with coach Peter MacDonald, has now finished round robin play, while the other four teams have one round robin draw left, at 2 pm Saturday. The 4-0 finish means that O’Rourke will advance to the Sunday final, where she’ll take on the winner of the semi-final, between the second and third place teams from the round robin. O’Rourke’s team curls out of the Charlottetown Curling Complex, but O’Rourke is also a Cornwall member, curling with her husband Mark and two of their friends in our Tuesday evening Competitive League.

Defending champion Suzanne Birt is still looking for her first win following a 9-7 loss tonight to Charlottetown clubmate Lisa Jackson. Jackson improves to 1-2, tied with Kim Dolan, who had the evening bye, while Birt is at 0-3. Birt and Jackson were tied at 1 after three ends, when Jackson scored a triple, The teams traded deuces and Birt narrowed the gap to 1 with another pair in end 7. Jackson took a single in 8, with Birt tying the game with a deuce in nine, before Jackson recorded a deuce in the final end for the win.

The final round robin draw will see Berry (2-1) take on Birt (0-3), and Dolan play Jackson (both 1-2). Win or lose, Berry will be assured a playoff spot, along with the winner of the Dolan/Jackson game. A Birt win tomorrow would put her at 1-3, tied with the loser of the Dolan/Jackson match — not good enough to advance to a tiebreaker.

The winning  team from Sunday’s final advances to the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts, February 1-9 at the Maurice Richard Arena, Montreal, QC.End by end results are available at PEICurling.com/scotties

Cornwall’s Shirley Berry rink picks up opening draw win at PEI Scotties

It was an exciting start to the PEI Scotties Tournament of Hearts Provincial Women’s Curling Championships at the Charlottetown Curling Complex, with both opening draw round-robin games going to an extra end.

Dolan scored a triple in the 7th end for a 5-4 lead in the game, but Berry took singles in the next two ends to pull ahead, with Dolan forcing the extra with a single in ten, giving Berry the last rock advantage coming home where she scored a single for the win.

In stick curling there are two curlers per team, who deliver their rocks with delivery sticks, with each team member delivering from opposite ends. Sweeping is allowed only from the hog line to the back of the house at the playing end. Two curlers, one from each team, alternately deliver 6 stones each per end, while their teammate skips that end. The roles are then reversed, and the partners deliver the stones back. No stone may be removed from play until the fourth stone of each end. Games are six ends and take about an hour to play. Former member of Cornwall’s Matthew MacLean junior rink victim of snowmobile accident

The PEI curling community was shocked and saddened to hear of the passing, as the result of a snowmobile accident on Wednesday, of Kevin Michael Gallant, 18, of Bloomfield Corner. Gallant was a former member of the Matthew MacLean junior men’s rink who curled out of the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary, and are currently curling with the Cornwall Curling Club and the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club  The MacLean team are determined to continue with this year’s provincial juniors championship, which starts this evening. Gallant was not on this year’s roster.

If necessary, Curl PEI and the host Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club will make schedule changes to accommodate the MacLean rink during this trying time.  PEI curlers extend their sympathies to the Gallant family, the Maple Leaf, Cornwall and Silver Fox curling club, and to members of both the Matthew and Amanda MacLean rinks involved in the provincial junior championship this weekend.

Mixed Doubles Curling  is new form of the traditional sport, with the following main differences:

– Instead of playing in teams of four, mixed doubles curling is for teams of two players – one male and one female (no alternate/spare player is allowed).

– Teams have only six stones each (instead of eight) and one of those stones, from each team, is prepositioned on the centreline before each end of play starts.

– Player one delivers the first and last stones and player two plays the second, third and fourth stones. If they choose to, the two players may swap positions from one end to the next.

– Sweeping can be done by both team members.

– Each team receives 46 minutes of playing time and games are fixed at 8 ends – compared to 73 minutes and 10 ends for “traditional” curling.

Mixed Doubles has both a Canadian and a World championship, and is played in over 25 countries on four continents.

If you are interested in Mixed Doubles, get your two-person team together, and sign up for the Cornwall Curling  Club Mixed Doubles Bonspiel, on Saturday, January 4th, where you can try out this new form of our sport, and perhaps decide to sign up for the provincials.

Curl PEI is holding the Provincial Mixed Doubles Championship at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary from Feb. 13-17 (same dates and venue as the Mixed). Entries have to be in by Jan. 16, with entry fee of $100 per team. The winners of the provincial championship will advance to the 2014 Mixed Doubles Curling Trials, March 19-23, 2014 at the Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club.

Teams at the Trials in Ottawa are responsible for their own travel and accommodations as well as the entry fee of  $400 per team. The entry fees collected will be returned in full as prize money. A host hotel with a preferred rate will be announced by January 1, 2014, however, choice of accommodations is up to the individual teams. Curl PEI will apply for a “team grant”  from the provincial government to assist with travel expenses. Coaches are welcome and will have access to the field of play for practices and time-outs. However, there will not be a spare or alternate pool nor will alternates be allowed to compete.

The 2014 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championships will take place April 23-30 in Dumfries Scotland, in conjunction with the World Senior Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships.

To get an idea on how a Mixed Doubles game works, take a look at the final, between Hungary and Sweden from last year’s Worlds in Fredericton NB:

(h) Before the start of every end, one team shall instruct the game umpire to place their team’s “positioned” stone at the playing end of the sheet in one of two positions, designated A and B. The opponent’s “positioned” stone shall then be placed by the game umpire in whichever position (A or B) remains vacant. The location of these positions shall be as follows:
1) Position A: Placement so that the stone is bisected by the centre line and is either immediately in front of or immediately behind one of 3 points in the ice. The points are placed on the centre line:
§ at the mid-point between the hog line and the outermost edge of the top of the house
§ 0.915 m. (3 feet) from the mid-point closer to the house
§ 0.915 m. (3 feet) from the mid-point closer to the hog line

Based on the ice conditions, the Chief Umpire shall determine the specific placement for Position A to be used before the start of the pre-game practice and that same placement must be used for the entire game.
2) Position B: Placement so that the stone is in the back of the house, bisected by the centre line and abutting the back edge of the tee.
(i) The team having the decision on the placement of the “positioned” stones shall be:
1) Teams opposing each other in the game shall use the Last Stone Draw (LSD) to determine which team has the decision in the first end. The team with the lesser LSD distance shall have the decision on the placement.
2) Following the first end, the team that did not score shall have the decision on the placement.
3) If neither team scores in an end, the team that delivered the first stone in that end shall have the decision on placement in the next end.
(j) The team whose “positioned” stone is placed in Position A (in front of the house) shall deliver the first stone in that end, and the team whose “positioned” stone is placed in Position B (in the house) shall deliver the second stone in that end.
(k) While the team is in the process of delivery, the non-delivering player must be positioned inside the hog line and on the ice surface at the playing end of the sheet. After delivery, either or both players may sweep their delivered stone and any stones set in motion that belong to their team anywhere in front of the tee line at the playing end. This applies during all of the team’s delivered stones, including the LSD.
(l) If a player delivers a stone out of proper rotation, that stone is returned to the hack to be delivered by the correct player, after any displaced stones have been replaced to their original positions by the non-offending team. Should the infraction not be discovered until after the delivery of a subsequent stone, play continues as if the infraction had not occurred.
