Cornwall players capture both divisions at Advantage Communications Junior Mixed

The Advantage Communications / Curl PEI Junior Mixed Curling Championships wrapped up this afternoon at the Charlottetown Curling Complex, with two very close and exciting come-from-behind finals between four very evenly matched teams.

The James Dalton combined team from the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club in Summerside, and the Cornwall Curling Club, won the three-team double round robin Under 16 division, edging the Tyler Smith foursome from the Crapaud Community and Montague Curling Clubs by a 6-5 score in today’s final. Smith, aided by a 5th end triple, had a 5-2 lead after five ends, but Dalton came back with a single in six, a stolen deuce in the seventh end, and stole the final end as well, to pull out the victory. Playing with Dalton were third Lauren Lenentine, second stone Matthew MacDonald, and lead Breanne Burgoyne, with coach Pat Quilty. Completing the runner-up Smith foursome are Kaleigh MacKay at third, second Brooks Roche, and lead stone Kaleigh Peters. The team is coached by Kevin Smith. Both teams finished double round robin play with identical 3-1 win-loss records. The other team in the division, the Owen Collier foursome from Montague, did not manage to pick up a win.

The two-team Best of 5 Under 21 division championship was won by the Kyle Holland rink from the Charlottetown Curling Complex and the Cornwall Curling Club, who were trailing the Cody Dixon foursome from Montague 4-2 after six ends in the eight end contest, but came from behind with a triple in the seventh and a stolen single in the eighth end to win by a 6-4 score. The teams had both won two games in the best of 5 to force today’s sudden death fifth game. Other members of the winning Holland team are third Chloe McCloskey, second Taylor McInnis, and lead Sabrina Smith, with coach Paul Smith. Rounding out the runner-up Dixon rink are third Danielle Collings, second Dylan Lowery, lead Chloe Jardine, and coach Tammy Dewar.

supporterkfc

The Cornwall Curling Club rink of Mitchell Schut, Parker MacFadyen, Nick Johnston, and Draven Kowalski, with coaches Mike Schut and Butch McGee went undefeated, with a 4-0 win-loss record in double round robin play to capture the three team boy’s section of the

KFC Provincial Under 13 Curling Championships, which wrapped up today at the Crapaud Community Curling Club. The rules specify that, in the event that a team goes through the double round without a loss, they will be declared the winner, without having to play an additional championship game. Connor Lilly and his rink from the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club in Summerside finished in second place with a 2-2 record, while the Carson Savidant team from the Charlottetown Curling Complex finished at 0-4. Other members of the second place Lilly team are AJ Cahill, Colin MacLeod, and Aden Moore, with coach Shelley MacFadyem while Tyler Aiken, Liam Kelly, and Alec Huestis complete the Savidant squad.

In the five team girl’s divison, the Tegan Corkum rink from the Silver Fox Curling & Club in Summerside beat the Kristie Rogers foursome from the Cornwall Curling Club 6-2 in the final to take the girl’s championship. Corkum and her rink of Elly Whitney-Coulter, Maddison Moore, and Gabrielle Gallant, with coach Robert Corkum went undefeated with a 4-0 record in the round robin to advance directly to the final. Rogers, and her team of Beth Kirby, Olivia MacPhail, and Rachel MacLean, along with coaches Michele Rogers and Chris Kirby, and the Cornwall Curling Club team skipped alternately by Katie Worth and Katelyn Burgoyne, both had 2-2 win-loss records, and advanced to the semi-final, which Rogers won by a 6-3 score. Meaghan Perry and Haley Matheson, with coach Ann Doucette complete the Cornwall team. Rounding out the girl’s round robin were the Breanna Raynor rink from the Maple Leaf Curling Club in Alberton, and the Bridget Patterson foursome from the Silver Fox, both with 1-3 records.

Davies rink runner-up at The Dominion

supporterthedominion240
The provincial The Dominion Curling Club Championship wrapped up with today’s 5:30 pm finals at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton. Sharon Horne and her host club rink of of Kim Ellsworth, Wendy Fraser, and Alison Griffin fought back from a 3-2 deficit after 5 ends with a deuce in the sixth, and stolen singles in the final two ends to defeat 2011 champ Lorianne Davies and her Cornwall Curling Club by a 6-3 score to win the women’s title. Other members of the Davies rink are Morgan Kirkham, Tracy MacDonald, and Lynda Turnbull. It was a repeat win for the Crapaud Community Curling Club’s Allan Inman rink in the men’s section,  with a close 8-7 victory over Blair Jay and his team from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside. Inman was up two with hammer coming home, facing four Jay counters with his final shot, where he played a hit and stick. When the rocks settled, Jay still had shot rock, and a measure was needed to determine who had second shot. It was Inman’s, giving him the one-point victory. Other members of the winning Inman rink are Stephen Thomson, Gordon Fall, and Tony Quigley, while Sandy Rundle, Chuck Jay, and Gerald Caissy round out the runner-up Jay foursome.

The Horne and Inman rinks now advance to the national The Dominion Curling Club Championship, November 18-23, 2013 at the Fort William Curling Club in Thunder Bay Ontario.

Davies scored a triple in an extra end to beat Summerside’s Karen MacDonald rink 7-4 in the afternoon semi-finals. Jay and his team won the men’s semi 8-2 over the Paul Morrison rink from Montague. Davies and Morrison both finished round robin play with 3-2 win-loss records to advance to the semi-final between the second and third place teams.

Inman had a spotless 5-0 round robin record to take first place in the men’s divison, while Horne and Davies both had 4-1 records after round robin play. Since Horne beat Davies, by a 10-4 score, in their round robin encounter, she was awarded first place and a berth in the final. MacDonald finished round robin play with a 2-3 win-loss record, tied with Charlottetown’s Carol Kennedy, and Montague’s Tracy Yorston-Campbell, requiring tiebreakers to determine the final berth in the women’s semi. Kennedy beat Yorston-Campbell 7-1 in the first tiebreaker, while MacDonald doubled Kennedy 6-3 in the second one.

The other rinks in the Men’s division were the Alan Brown team from Charlottetown and the Mike Trudeau foursome from Western, who both finished at 2-3, and the Paul Neima team from Cornwall, who did not pick up a win in five starts. Crapaud’s Vanessa Hamming, who finished at 1-4, rounded out the women’s field.

The defending champion Alan Inman foursome from the Crapaud Community Curling Club, and the Sharon Horne rink from the host Western Community Curling Club have advanced to their respective 5:30 pm Sunday finals at the provincial The Dominion Curling Club Championships. The men’s semis see Montague’s Paul Morrison team take on the Blair Jay rink from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside. Both teams finished at 3-2, with Jay taking second place honours by virtue of his 8-3 round robin win over Morrison. The other rinks in the Men’s division are the Alan Brown team from Charlottetown and the Mike Trudeau foursome from Western, who both finished at 2-3, and the Paul Neima team from Cornwall, who did not pick up a win in five starts.

Cornwall’s MacLean/Field twosome runners-up in PEI Stick after double extra end in delayed final (Journal)

[Note: Both the winner and runner-up teams will advance to both the Maritime Stick Curling Championship, March 12-14 in Montague, and the Canadian Open Stick Curling Championship here in Cornwall from April 1-4]

(by Eric McCarthy)

ALBERTON — A power outage, a storm and vacation schedules delayed the men’s final of the Ferguson’s Funeral Homes/Curl PEI Provincial Stick Curling Championship by a full two weeks.

When the game finally got underway on Thursday, teams didn’t seem to want to quit.

It took two extra ends for John Vincent and Walter Callaghan from the host Western Community Curling Club to emerge as champions.

Paul Field and Roddie MacLean from the Cornwall Curling Club scored a single in the sixth end to tie the score at 3-3 and send the game into an extra end.

The seventh end ended with no rocks in the house. Callaghan was looking at two Cornwall rocks when he stepped out of the hack with his final delivery in eight and he cleared both of them and stayed for the win.

MacWilliams, Peters win Ladder League round two – final draw set

Orange stick man climbing on ladder

Round two of the Wednesday evening Ladder League, sponsored by Donnie Lowther Snow Removal, wrapped up last week, with the Bob MacWilliams rink winning the A pool with only one loss, and the Gordon Peters foursome taking the B section, also with a single loss. There will be a new A winner in the last round, as Bob’s team is bowing out, because several members of his team are off to warmer climes (Bob isn’t though- he’s available to spare). We’ll be having seven teams (meaning one bye) in the A pool for the final round, which runs March 6, 13, 20, 27, and April 3rd, and six teams in the B pool, so there’ll be one free sheet each draw time. If the weather holds, the B pool will play their whole round robin, while the A pool will be a couple of weeks short of a full round.

The teams moving down to the B pool are the Paul Durant team with two wins, and the Ray Biagé team, who didn’t pick up ANY wins in the round (we thought we might have a chance against Paul in the last game, but Bob Fowler’s awesome sweeping ability kept us on the losing side!). Two of the three teams who dropped down to the B last round, skipped by Peters, and by Rick Doiron, will move back up to A for the final round, along with the Lew Black team, who was tied in games won with the other “fallen” A team, skipped by David Younker, but beat Younker in their round robin encounter.

Here are pools for the final round, sponsored by Clyde River Golf Links:

A2-Mark MacDonald (lost to Neima in their game)

No Ford in Sean Ledgerwood’s future, but Brett Gallant goes home with $1,000 at Hot Shots (CCA)

EDMONTON – Marc Kennedy had just one thought in his mind: throw it hard and straight.

The Alberta second did just that with his last rock, earning four points to edge defending champion Wayne Middaugh of Ontario to win the Ford Hot Shots competition Saturday on the opening day of the Tim Hortons Brier, presented by Monsanto.

Kennedy outscored Middaugh 4-2 on the final shot – the double takeout – to nip the Ontario third 22-21 in the final. Oddly, neither had tried the shot in their practice prior to the final.

“I was thinking of how dumb we were not to practise the double in our practice, neither one of us threw the double and it always comes (down) to it,” Kennedy said of his thoughts as he prepared for his final shot. “I was thinking throw it hard and straight and see what happens.”

The 31-year-old RBC Olympic ambassador who has won two Briers, a world championship and the 2010 Olympic gold curling with Kevin Martin’s rink, said it was an advantage throwing last, knowing he needed just three points to win the title and the two-year lease of a Ford Fusion SE.

“You don’t plan it that way, but knowing exactly what I needed on the last one probably helped me throw it a little bit better.”

The annual Hot Shots competition sees curlers throw six different shots: hit and stay, draw the button, draw the port, raise, hit and roll and double takeout. Each shot is awarded points on a scale from zero to five depending on the end result of the shot.

Middaugh won $2,000 for finishing second.

“The boys were putting pressure on me, saying we have to keep the Ontario streak going,” said Middaugh, whose victory last year was the fourth straight for Ontario curlers. “I just threw my last one a little in, just needed to curl another half inch.

“But I have no complaints, $2,000. It’s a ton of fun, this is what I live for.”

In the semifinals Middaugh beat Brett Gallant of Newfoundland-Labrador 23-20 while Kennedy beat Sean Ledgerwood of Prince Edward Island, 26-18.

Gallant’s 20 points gave him third place and $1,000 for the Brier rookie.

“Car would been cool, my ’98 Honda Civic is getting old,” Gallant said. “I got lucky the first round, made some shots and got through.”

The 23-year-old business student said there wasn’t any pressure facing Middaugh since he’s played against him numerous time.

“Just trying to make some shots and get comfortable with the ice. It’s not real pressure, but get to get out there in front of fans and make your shots. Makes me a little more comfortable going into the first game.”

Gallant lost points on his first two shots and couldn’t recover.

“I rolled to the 12 foot on my hit and stick and was a little light on my first draw. Those were the two shots he scored five on. After that I got pretty good points the last four shots but had dug myself a hole.”

In the quarter-finals, Brock Virtue of Saskatchewan (16 points), Jon Mead of Manitoba (18), John Morris of Alberta (19) and Éric Sylvain of Quebec (22) were eliminated. Sylvain was tied with Gallant but in the sudden-death draw to the button he came up short of the four-foot while Gallant was biting the button.

Cornwall member Sean Ledgerwood advances to Final 8 round of Ford Hot Shots at the Brier

EDMONTON (CCA) – Defending champion Wayne Middaugh of Ontario tied for top spot in Friday’s qualifying of the Ford Hot Shots curling competition, advancing along with seven others to Saturday’s quarter-finals.

The veteran third for Glenn Howard’s team, the 45-year-old Middaugh scored 27 points in the six skill shots, tying him with Alberta second Marc Kennedy and Quebec second Éric Sylvain.

Also advancing was Saskatchewan skip Brock Virtue and Manitoba third Jon Mead, each with 26 points, plus Alberta’s John Morris, Sean Ledgerwood of Prince Edward Island and Brett Gallant of Newfoundland/Labrador all with 24 points

“Hardest part is the draw,” Middaugh said of the shooting. “The draw is a bit of a guess because you throw it in practice it’s probably 10 feet slower. All the credit to the sweepers for making the draw, those are the ones I got big points on.”

Ontario third Wayne Middaugh is going for back-to-back wins at the Ford Hot Shots. (Photo, CCA/Michael Burns)

While Middaugh will looking to defend his title, Kennedy is hoping for better results that the eighth-place finish he had the only other time he made the final eight.

Regarded as one of the best seconds in the game, Kennedy demonstrated his shot-making skills Friday. About time, he admitted afterwards, noting the rest of the team – skip Kevin Martin, third John Morris and lead Ben Hebert — has had more success than him.

“John won it, Kevin made the final once, Ben’s made it to the final so it’s me who hasn’t had a lot of success so I take a bit of ribbing for it. It’s about time I came through.”

Besides team bragging rights, the Hot Shots is a great prep for the actual Tim Hortons Brier, presented by Monsanto, that gets underway Saturday afternoon.

“That’s the most important part of the whole thing,” said Kennedy. “It’s nice to get acclimatized to the building, the ice, get a feel for draw weight. Allows you to get comfortable.”

The St. Albert, Alta., native lost three points on two shots.

“The first shot, the nose hit, I rolled a bit too far. And the tap-back, I tapped it to the eight foot. The key to the hot shots is to stay in the hunt and make the double. Most guys who made the double are the guys who are going to move on.”

Éric Sylvain.

This is the 19th year of the shot-making skills competition that is held at both the Scotties Tournament of Hearts and the Brier.

The quarter-finals begin Saturday at 11:30 a.m. (MST) followed by the semifinals and final. The Brier begins with its first draw at 1:30. All draws will be televised on TSN/RDS, the official broadcast partner of the Season of Champions.

The annual Hot Shots competition sees curlers throw six different shots: hit and stay, draw the button, draw the port, raise, hit and roll and double takeout. Each shot is awarded points on a scale from zero to five depending on the end result of the shot.

Ford of Canada provides the winner with a two-year lease on a 2013 Ford Fusion SE 2.0L. The second-place finisher wins $2,000 and the third-place finisher receives $1,000.

The Ford Hot Shots event has been a fixture at the Brier since 1995.

Past winners at the Brier have been Greg McAulay and Pat Ryan of British Columbia, Alberta’s Don Bartlett, Randy Ferbey and John Morris, Saskatchewan’s Steve Laycock, Manitoba’s Steve Gould (twice), Northern Ontario’s Mike Coulter, Ontario’s Ed Werenich, Craig Savill and Richard Hart, New Brunswick’s Rick Perron, Jeff Lacey and Marc LeCocq, Newfoundland and Labrador’s Mark Nichols, Ontario’s Glenn Howard and Middaugh.

Cornwall’s Roddie MacLean/Paul Field duo advance to PEI Stick Open Division final. Stavert/Clarke are repeat women’s winners

Stick Curling PEI Logo

There’ll be a delay in deciding the winner in the 16 team Open (men’s and mixed teams) Divison at the Ferguson Funeral Homes/Curl PEI Provincial Stick Curling Championship, as the host Western Community Curling Club in Alberton, along with the rest of the West Prince region from the St. Eleanors part of Summerside all the way to North Cape, was plunged into darkness just before the final game because of a power blackout expected to last at least four hours. As both the winner and the runner-up will advance to both the Maritime Stick Curling Championship in Montague, and the Canadian Open Stick Championship in Cornwall,  there’s no urgency to choose a definitive winner, and it may take some time to reschedule, as one of the skips will be out of the country for the next 10 days.

The two finalists are the Walter Callaghan/John Vincent duo from the host Western club, who have previously won the event three times, and the Roddie MacLean/Paul Field team from the Cornwall Curling Club. Both teams had 5-2 round robin records.  MacLean/Field won their semi-final 5-3 over Cornwall clubmates Bryan Sutherland and Elaine Hughes, while Callaghan/Vincent won theirs 3-1 over their Western clubmates Bill Glydon and Eldon Hardy.

The Glydon and Sutherland rinks finished round robin play in first place in their pools, with 5-2 and  6-1 records, respectively. In quarter-final action earlier this afternoon, the Callaghan team beat Cornwall’s Sterling Stratton and Ernie Stavert twosome 7-3, while the MacLean rink stole a single and a triple in the final two ends to defeat the Eddie Bernard/Roger Gavin duo from the host club. Stratton, Bernard, MacLean, and Callaghan all had 5-2 round robin records.

The consolation game to determine third and fourth place, between the Sutherland and Glydon rinks, was also a victim of the blackout, but third place was awarded to the Sutherland/Hughes team by mutual agreement.

The three-team Women’s Divison wrapped up on Thurday. with the Ruth Stavert/Gloria Clarke duo from the Cornwall Curling Club  winning their fourth consecutive women’s stick title. They finished round robin play with a 3-1 win-loss record, ahead of Cornwall’s Shirley Lank and Mary Plamondon twosome at 2-2, and the Ann Barwise/Audrey Callaghan team from the host club (1-3). The rules dictate that, since a definitive winner came out of the round robin, no championship game was necessary.

The top four open division teams, skipped by  Callaghan, MacLean, Glydon, and Sutherland, and the top two women’s rinks from this year’s event, skipped by Stavert and Lank, all earn the right to compete in the Maritime Stick Curling Championships, March 12-14 here in PEI at the Montague Curling Club. The Ruth Stavert/Gloria Clarke duo are the defending women’s champs, and also won in 2010. The Floyd Stewart/Gordon MacDonald rink were runners-up in the open division last year.

The top two open division teams, skipped by Callaghan and MacLean, also earn the right to compete in the 2013 Canadian Open Stick Curling Championship, April 1-4, also here in PEI, at the Cornwall Curling Club. The defending champs from last year’s event in Regina are the Earl Stephenson and Warren Johnson team from Winnipeg MB. The Montague Curling Club rink of Basil and Sterling Higginbotham won the B consolation prize last year. This is an “open” event, but reserves entries for the top two teams from each of BC, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan. Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and PEI. There are 32 spots available for other teams, for a total of 48 teams.

In stick curling there are two curlers per team, who deliver their rocks with delivery sticks, with each team member delivering from opposite ends. Sweeping is allowed only from the hog line to the back of the house at the playing end. Two curlers, one from each team, alternately deliver 6 stones each per end, while their teammate skips that end. The roles are then reversed, and the partners deliver the stones back. No stone may be removed from play until the fourth stone of each end. Games are six ends and take about an hour to play. For more information on stick curling, including complete rules of play, visit www.stickcurling.ca.

It’s four women’s division championship titles in a row for the Ruth Stavert/Gloria Clarke duo from the Cornwall Curling Club at the Ferguson Funeral Homes/Curl PEI Provincial Stick Curling Championships, being played at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton.

Two teams lead with 5-1 records in each of the two Open Division (men’s and mixed teams) pools.  Eddie Bernard/Roger Gavin from the host club, and Cornwall’s Sterling Stavert/Ernie Stavert duo are atop the A pool, while Bill Glydon/Eldon Hardy from Western and Roddie MacLean/Paul Field from Cornwall are the B pool leaders.

The Open Division round robin concludes with the 12:30 Thursday draw, followed by quarter-finals at 2:15, semi-finals at 3:30 pm, with the final and consolation final going at 5 pm.

A federal-provincial investment in infrastructure will improve facilities in four Island communities. From left, George O’Connor, president of the Benevolent Irish Society; Minister of National Revenue Gail Shea; Cornwall Deputy Mayor Corey Frizzell; Winsloe Lions Club member Doug Cook; Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development Minister Ron MacKinley; and Emerald Community Centre volunteer Kent Croken.

The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of National Revenue, on behalf of the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Associate Minister of National Defence and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) (La Francophonie), and the Honourable Ron MacKinley, Prince Edward Island’s Minister of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development, along with community representatives today announced funding for upgrades to four community facilities in central Prince Edward Island.

“Our Government, through the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund, is supporting communities all across Canada in gaining long-term prosperity,” said Minister Shea. “The four infrastructure projects announced today will generate economic activity and jobs while also having positive social and cultural benefits for Islanders and visitors alike.”

In total, the Government of Canada will invest $184,598 from the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund. The Government of Prince Edward Island will invest $129,200 under the Island Community Fund. Total project costs for the four projects announced today total $380,720. Community proponents have each made contributions to their respective projects.

“The provincial government is pleased to support improvements to these community facilities so they meet the needs of residents for years to come,” said Minister MacKinley. “We are committed to working with Islanders to improve the quality of life and create a climate for economic development across the province.”

• The Benevolent Irish Society will receive $71,594 from the Government of Canada and $39,200 from the Government of Prince Edward Island to carry out upgrades to the interior and exterior of their facility. Improvements will include new siding and the replacement of 11 windows, new flooring, new light fixtures, air conditioning and an addition to the main floor stage, additional storage space, improvements to the library/genealogy centre and paving.

• The Winsloe Lions Club will receive $43,861 from the Government of Canada and $40,000 from the Government of Prince Edward Island to add a new front entrance to its facility, replace the basement ceiling, remove and relocate decking, add storage and meeting rooms and expand the kitchen.

• The Town of Cornwall has received $16,643 from the Government of Canada and $12,800 from the Government of Prince Edward Island for new air conditioner units for the main floor rooms in the Cornwall Civic Centre.

• The Emerald Recreation Club will receive $52,500 from the Government of Canada and $37,200 from the Government of Prince Edward Island to carry out upgrades to the Community Centre and Train Station in Emerald. Improvement work to the Community Centre will include insulation of floor and exterior walls, new windows and doors, upgrades to electrical, painting, an air exchange, a portable stage, and tables and chairs. Work at the Emerald Train Station will include a new roof and flue, upgrades to wiring, exterior painting and new signage.

“The Benevolent Irish Society is one of the oldest organizations in Prince Edward Island. The Executive, our members and our guests, want to see our facility remain vibrant for many, many years to come,” said Mr. George O’Connor, President, Benevolent Irish Society. “We are very pleased to have the financial support from the federal and provincial governments to move forward with our extensive renovation plans for the Honourable Edward Whalen Irish Cultural Centre.”

In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced plans to further modernize Canada’s infrastructure by committing $150 million over two years for the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund. The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency is delivering the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund in Atlantic Canada with an allocation of $16.6 million, of which $2.5 million is being allotted to projects in Prince Edward Island.

The Prince Edward Island Government is delivering funds to eligible projects through the Island Community Fund, a multi-year funding commitment to address infrastructure needs in communities across the province.

Murphy and MacDonald teams beat Cornwall rinks in Seniors finals

creditunionsofpei300

The Nola Murphy rink from the host Silver Fox Curling and Yacht in Summerside beat the defending champion Shirley Berry foursome from the Cornwall and Silver Fox clubs 7-5 tonight, while the Rod MacDonald team from the Charlottetown Curling Complex and the Silver Fox defeated the Bill Hope rink from the Cornwall and Silver Fox clubs to win the Credit Unions of PEI/Curl PEI Senior Curling Championships. The winning teams will be on familiar ice next month, when they return to the Silver Fox for the Canadian Seniors, from March 16-24.

Murphy’s rink includes Donna Arsenault, Elspeth Carmody, and Laurie McCabe. They beat Montague’s Jennifer Scott team, a reunion of their 1988 PEI women’s championship rink, who went through the triple knockout round undefeated, 10-2 in the Page A vs B game to earn a bye to the final. Berry, a 5-time PEI Seniors champ, then beat Scott 8-1 in the semi-final to advance to tonight’s championship game. Other members of the Berry squad are Sandy Hope, Shelley Ebbett, and Arleen Harris.

In the final, the teams exchanged singles in the first two ends, and Murphy pulled ahead with a deuce in three. Berry scored a pair of singles to tie it at 3-all after 5 ends of play. Murphy took one in the sixth, but Berry grabbed the lead for the only time in the event with a deuce in seven. Murphy took a deuce in the eighth and stole a single in the ninth for a 7-5 score, and held on for the win.

MacDonald, whose team, which includes John Likely, Mark O’Rourke, and Rod’s brother Peter MacDonald, has won a combined total of 23 PEI men’s titles over the years, went through round robin play with a perfect 5-0 win-loss record to earn a bye to the final, against 2011 PEI Seniors champ Hope, and his teammates Ted MacFadyen, Craig Mackie and David Murphy,  Hope beat Summerside’s Blair Jay foursome 9-4 in this afternoon’s semi-final to advance to tonight’s game.

In the championship game, MacDonald opened with a deuce, but Hope tied it up with a pair of singles. The teams then traded deuces for a 4-4 tie at the half. MacDonald singled six, while Hope blanked seven and eight. A MacDonald steal of two in the ninth gave him a three point lead, and the game ended with a 7-4 final score.

Six men’s teams and eight women’s rinks took part in this year’s championship.

Cornwall’s Schut, Fullerton claim national awards (Guardian)

(by Tim Gall) For the ninth straight year, Prince Edward Island has won individual awards at the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Curling Championships.

Jonathan Schut, lead for the Tyler Smith team, and Katie Fullerton, mate for the Veronica Smith team who threw lead rocks, were honoured during the Saturday’s award ceremony in Fort McMurray, Alta. It also marked the 12th time this century in which Island curlers have brought home some hardware, with 2004 being the only year they came up empty.

Fullerton, earned a second-team all-star berth for the second-best shooting percentage for competitors throwing lead stones.

“Receiving this award was a tremendous honour,” said Schut. “It is only awarded to one male and one female athlete every year. When my name was announced as the recipient, I was overwhelmed. I am honoured . . . and it will always be a cherished memory from my experience at nationals.

“In order to be eligible for the award, you must submit an essay to the selection committee at the beginning of the event,” he explained. “Upon submission of the application, the applicants are reviewed and watched throughout the tournament. I am incredibly humbled and honoured to be the 2013 recipient.”

Fullerton was also very humble about her honour, and thanked her family, teammates and coaches.

“I was so excited to earn an all-star award. I know I played my best during the whole event, and my hard work paid off. It feels amazing to be ranked as one of the best junior curlers in Canada.”

Sabrina Smith was teamed with Quebec’s Marc-Alexandre Charest-Dion against Veronica Smith and Ontario’s David Easter. Sabrina’s team won the medal with a 7-4 decision.

Following the bronze- medal game in the mixed doubles, Veronica Smith, looked back on the mini weekend tournament.

“It was a fun event that enabled us to meet new people in a fun environment.”

Regarding the entire week — and originally in the hunt for the national championship — Veronica was thrilled.

“I don’t really think there are words to describe the week I just had,” said the skip, whose team also included Katie Fullerton and Chloe McCloskey as well as sister Sabrina. “I have met so many great people, played against the best junior curlers in the country, had the opportunity to play on arena ice for the first time, and represent the province of Prince Edward Island.”

On the junior men’s side, the foursome of Tyler Smith, Alex Sutherland, Alex Jenkins, and Jonathan Schut — also from the Cornwall Curling Club — finished with the same 3-6 record as the junior women during the main part of the competition. The boys did not advance to the medal games in the mixed doubles event.

“Mixed doubles was really fun actually, a little confusing but still fun,” said Sutherland.

“I loved representing P.E.I.,” he added. “It’s such an honour to wear the crest. It was an awesome learning experience, both socially and curling wise. I hope next year’s representatives have as much fun as we did.”

Playoffs set at Canadian Juniors. Tyler Smith loses, Veronica Smith wins their final games (CCA)

FORT McMURRAY, Alta. — The playoff pairings are set at the 2013 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships.

Manitoba’s Matt Dunstone (Winnipeg) on the men’s side and Ontario’s Jamie Sinclair (Manotick) on the women’s side both won third-place tiebreakers on Friday afternoon at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre to clinch berths in the weekend semifinals.

The Ontario women (third Holly Donaldson, second Katelyn Wasylkiw, lead Erin Jenkins, coach Graham Sinclair) ended a run of frustrating losses with a 6-5 win over the Yukon’s Sarah Koltun (Whitehorse), ending the Yukon’s bid to make the junior women’s playoffs for the first time since the Yukon and Northwest Territories started sending separate teams.

Earlier in the day, the Yukon blew out Ontario 10-3, and on Thursday night, Ontario gave up three in the 10th end to lose 11-10 to B.C.’s Corryn Brown.

“I think I’ve gone through every single emotion possible,” said Sinclair after her team’s win. “I’m happy that it’s done with and we’re moving on to the semis.”

Ontario will play Manitoba’s Shannon Birchard (Winnipeg) in the semifinal Sunday at 10:30 a.m. (1:30 pm AT), with the winner moving on to play B.C. in the gold-medal game Sunday at 5 p.m (8 p.m. AT).

“Our team went through a lot this morning; it was a terrible game,” said Sinclair. “It was not for us. We kind of broke down after that, but our ability to regroup, come out here and control the whole game, I think that says a lot about the personalities on our team. We’re really excited. We’re definitely happy with the way things are going, and after this game, we’re feeling a little more confident.”

The Manitoba men, meanwhile, endured a draining day that saw them pull out a pair of unexpected victories. In their final round-robin game on Friday morning, Saskatchewan skip Brady Scharback (Saskatoon) just had to touch paint in the 10th end to score three for a victory, but was heavy; Dunstone scored in the extra end for the win.

Then, against Ontario’s Aaron Squires, Manitoba could only watch as Ontario last-rock thrower Jason Camm had an open hit for the win but was narrow and wrecked, giving Manitoba the stolen victory.

“Let’s hope that doesn’t happen again,” said Dunstone, who’s backed up by third  Colton Lott, second Daniel Grant, lead Brendan MacCuish and coach Scott Grant. “That’s a lot for all of us to take in one sitting. We’re just glad to still be going.”

Manitoba will take on Nova Scotia’s Stuart Thompson (Halifax) in the semifinal on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. (1:30 p.m. AT) The winner moves into the championship game against Alberta’s Thomas Scoffin (Edmonton) at 5 p.m (8 p.m. AT)

“It’s not over yet, right? We’re not done with this thing until we lose and we’re out,” said Dunstone. “There’s still lots of work to be done, and we’re looking forward to it. They’re (Nova Scotia) a great team. We’re going to have to be on top of our game if we hope to make that final.”

The six teams in each gender that didn’t qualify for the championship round played a seeding round robin to determine final rankings for next year’s Canadian Juniors in Liverpool, N.S.

In the final round of men’s seeding games, Daniel Murray of the Northwest Territories (1-8, Yellowknife) defeated Nunavut’s David Kakuktinniq (0-9, Rankin Inlet); and Newfoundland/Labrador’s Adam Boland (4-5, Gander) was an 8-6 victor over P.E.I.’s Tyler Smith (3-6, Cornwall).

In women’s games, Newfoundland/Labrador’s Carolyn Suley (6-3, St. John’s) beat Carina McKay-Saturnino of the Northwest Territories (Inuvik, 3-6) 8-4; Alberta’s Karynn Flory (5-4, Edmonton) was a 7-5 winner over Northern Ontario’s Tirzah Keffer (3-6, Thunder Bay); and P.E.I.’s Veronica Smith (3-6, Cornwall) turned back Nunavut’s Sadie Pinksen (0-9, Iqaluit) 11-3.
