Smiths Sweep Titles (Guardian)

(by Charles Reid)

Veronica and Tyler Smith (no relation) win their divisions at the P.E.I. junior curling championships

CORNWALL — Despite not being related, Veronica Smith and Tyler Smith have a lot in common.

And more so after each won their respective Pepsi provincial junior curling titles Sunday at the Cornwall Curling Club.

Tyler’s squad scored a 6-2 win over the Christopher Gallant rink of the Charlottetown Curling Club in the men’s final while Veronica’s crew downed the Amanda MacLean rink 9-5 in the women’s final.

Veronica Smith yells instructions at her sweepers during the women’s final Sunday at the Pepsi provincial junior curling championships in Cornwall.

“I don’t even know (what to say). It’s unbelievable,” said Veronica, 18, of the win over her Cornwall clubmates. “The girls were behind me the whole game. We trained so hard for this. We just went out focused. We knew we could do it.”

Veronica’s group, which went 3-1 in the round robin losing to MacLean, scored five times in the eighth end to break open a 4-4 tie.

The Smiths earned a berth in the M&M Meat Shops Canadian juniors Feb. 2 to 10, in Fort McMurray, Alta.

Tyler, 14, had a similar reaction to his squad’s victory. Also based out of the Cornwall club, it includes Alex Sutherland (third), Alex Jenkins (second) and Jonathan Schut (lead).

“I don’t know. I’m speechless,” Tyler said. “It’s amazing considering the road we took to get there.”

Tyler’s road meant a tiebreaker on Sunday for the 3-3 team, which they won in an extra end, and a semifinal win over the Cody Dixon rink from Montague to reach the final.

And like Veronica, the eighth end was the clincher in the title contest.

Up 3-2, Tyler hit a three-rock angle raise that made the score 6-2 and put things out of reach.

“We were really untouchable after that,” said Tyler, who skipped the 2011 Canada Games men’s rink and is the defending under-16 provincial champion.

As for the trips to the nationals, neither skip had an idea of what to expect, although Veronica had a few ideas.

“It’s going to be freezing,” she said with a laugh. “We have a hard month ahead of us. Have to go hard and represent our province well.”

Eighth end ices Pepsi Junior wins for Cornwall’s Smith rinks

smithandsmithPhoto (L-R): Veronica Smith, Tyler Smith

The eighth end proved crucial in both games tonight in the Curl PEI/Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championships, at the Cornwall Curling Club, giving both the Tyler Smith and Veronica Smith rinks from the host club the edge in their games against the undefeated Christopher Gallant and Amanda MacLean teams from Charlottetown and Cornwall respectively.

Fourteen year old Tyler Smith, who finished round robin play with a 3-3 win-loss record, and was playing his third game of the day after winning a quarter-final and a semi-final, had a slim 3-2 lead going into the eighth, against Gallant, who finished round robin play with a spotless 6-0 record and had a bye to the final when, with Gallant lying behind one behind a Smith guard with another Gallant rock partially covering it as well,  Smith attempted, and made, a tricky raise on his guard to knock out the Gallant counter and hang around for a triple. Gallant’s final shot in the ninth end rolled out, and it was handshake time, with a 6-2 final score.

The split is successful – Smith counts five!

Veronica Smith’s game was tied at 4 going into the eighth, where, going into her last shot she was lying three, with another rock just inches from the rings. She attempted to split that rock onto the house and roll her shooter in as well. The rock was a bit heavy, but both stones managed to stay in the rings, and she counted five. MacLean was kept to a single in the ninth, and Smith ran her out of rocks in the 10th, for a 9-5 final score.

On the men’s side, five of the six other teams finished behind Gallant with 3-3 win-loss records. Therefore, it was necessary to look at the results from the skills-based team ranking process (all four members of each team draw to the button. The total accumulated distance determines the ranking). The results from the ranking have Cody Dixon and his Montague rink ranked second, Matthew MacLean and his Maple Leaf Curling Club team placed 3rd, Tyler Smith and his host club rink in 4th spot, Shawn Pitre and his Charlottetown foursome ranked 5th, and Alex MacFadyen and his Silver Fox team ranked 6th.

There are three tie-breaker games. This evening, 5th-ranked Pitre played 6th-ranked MacFadyen, with Pitre winning by a 7-5 score.

Sunday at 10 am, the third and fourth ranked teams, skipped by MacLean and Smith, will face off on one sheet, while the second-ranked Cody Dixon will take on Shawn Pitre. The winners of these two quarter-final games will play in the semi-final, Sunday at 2:30 pm, with the winner facing Gallant in the 7 pm final.

In today’s women’s round robin games, the Amanda MacLean team, who competed at the Canada Games in 2011, beat the Emily Keen rink from Charlottetown 8-2, while the Veronica Smith foursome beat the Kaleigh MacKay rink 7-2. On the men’s side, Gallant, whose team includes three of the four members of last year’s championship rink, with Taylor McInnis new to the rink this year, doubled Tyler Smith 4-2, and scored a deuce in the extra end to beat Alex MacFadyen 8-6. In other games, Matthew MacLean downed the winless Justin Campbell rink from Summerside 13-4, Dixon beat Pitre 10-6, Tyler Smith edged Campbell 11-10 in an extra end in a game that saw a five-ender by the Campbell squad, and MacLean scored a triple in the final end of an 8-6 win over Pitre.

End by end results are available at http://peicurling.com/juniors.

The junior men’s and women’s champions will advance to the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, February 2-10, in Fort McMurray Alberta.

Round 2 of Wednesday Eve. Ladder League set to go

Welcome to the second round of the Wednesday Evening Ladder League, sponsored by Donnie Lowther Snow Removal

To make things more interesting, and minimize the number of 8:30 games you have to play, I’ve decided to try two pools of seven teams, with a crossover game each week, always at 6:30, where one of the teams will play the corresponding team from the other pool.

In order to make seven teams, we’ll be bringing three teams down from last round’s 8 team A pool, and 2 teams up from last round’s 6 team B pool.

Three teams, skipped by David Younker, Gord Peters, and Rick Doiron, had more than three losses, and will  be dropping to B.

The Greg Groves rink had only one loss in the B pool and will be awarded first place, followed by Karen Currie, who had two losses, and Lew Black, who had two losses, one of which was a default. The Groves and Currie rinks will move up the ladder to the A pool for the next round.. The Kelly Watts rink had three losses, while the Leigh Farrar and Mathieu Boudreau rinks each managed to record a win in the round.

Cornwall’s Veronica Smith picks up big win, Alex MacFadyen wins come-from-behind see-saw battle in Pepsi Jrs openers

Pepsi logo

The Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championships got underway on Wednesday evening at the Cornwall Curling Club with a two game opening draw – two games that we very different from each other. The junior women’s match was a battle of two host club rinks, skipped by Veronica Smith and Rachel O’Connor, with Smith, who was last year’s Under 18 champ. picking up a lopsided 13-3 win. Smith led 6-3 after six ends, but picked up a triple in the seventh and stole four points in the eighth to end the game early..

The junior men’s game was a see-saw battle between the Cody Dixon foursome from the Montague Curling Club, and the Alex MacFadyen team out of the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside. Dixon was in control the first three ends, having the hammer in the opening end and scoring a single, and then stealing a deuce and a single in ends two and three to lead 4-0. MacFadyen recovered with a triple in four, and followed a Dixon single in five with a deuce to tie the game at five-all after six ends. Dixon regained his lead with a pair in the seventh, but MacFadyen moved in front with a three-point eighth end. A deuce in nine gave Dixon a one point lead, coming home without hammer. MacFadyen was only able to pick up a single in the 10th, to bring the game into an extra end, where he stole a single for the come-from-behind win, by a 10-9 final score.

Round robin action continues on Thursday, with draws at 10 am, and 2:30 and 7 pm. The opening ceremonies are at 6:15 pm. The semi-finals, between the second and third place teams from the round robin go Sunday at 2:30 pm, with the winners taking on the first place teams in the 7 pm final.

The full draw and end-by-end results are available at peicurling.com/juniors There is no admission charge to watch the event. A 50×50 draw will take place.

Seven junior men’s teams, and five junior women’s rinks are taking part. The winning teams will advance to the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, February 2-10, in Fort McMurray Alberta.

2013 to be big year for Stick Curling on PEI-Western hosting Provincial, Montague hosting Maritime, Cornwall hosting National ch’ships

Stick Curl

Stick Curling, where the curling rock is delivered using a delivery stick rather than the traditional “hack” delivery method, has been growing rapidly on PEI since curlers here first started using “the stick” over 15 years ago. The delivery stick allows curlers with knee problems or other mobility challenges to keep in the game, and has even brought those who never curled before into the sport.

Stick curlers often curl in regular leagues, and also have their own variant of the game, “2 Person Stick Curling” where there are two, instead of four, members per team, with each team member delivering from opposite ends. Sweeping is allowed only from the hog line to the back of the house at the playing end. Two curlers, one from each team, alternately deliver 6 stones each per end, while their teammate skips that end. The roles are then reversed, and the partners deliver the stones back. No stone may be removed from play until the fourth stone of each end. Games are six ends and take about an hour to play.

Most of the clubs on PEI now have regular “Stick Curling” leagues, and the provincial Stick Curling Championships are now in their seventh year. 2013 will be a big year for PEI stick curling, with the Maritime championship, which rotates among the three Maritime provinces, taking place here, and, for the first time, the Canadian Open Stick Curling Championship will also be hosted here.

The Western Community Curling Club in Alberton is the site of the 2013 Curl PEI/Ferguson Funeral Homes Provincial Stick Curling Championships, which take place February 19-22. Defending champions in the open division are the Floyd Stewart/Gordon MacDonald duo from the Montague Curling Club, who edged the three-time defending champion Walter Callaghan/John Vincent twosome from Western by a 5-4 score in last year’s final. The Ruth Stavert/Gloria Clarke rink from the Cornwall Curling Club are three-time defending champions in the women’s division, finishing with a perfect 5-0 record last year. The 2012 runners-up were the team of Audrey Callaghan of Western, and Ann Barwise of the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary.

Entries for the provincial championship closed on January 25.

The top four open division teams, and the top two women’s rinks from this year’s provincial championships from all three Maritime provinces earn the right to compete in the Maritime Stick Curling Championships, March 12-14 (revised dates) at the Montague Curling Club. The Ruth Stavert/Gloria Clarke duo are the defending women’s champs, and also won in 2010. The New Brunswick rink of Grace Donald and Diane Gallant were last year’s runners-up. The Floyd Stewart/Gordon MacDonald rink were runners-up in the open division last year, losing to the Carl Duggan/Keith Bennett team from Nova Scotia in the final.

The top two open division teams from the provincials also earn the right to compete in the 2013 Canadian Open Stick Curling Championship, April 1-4 at the Cornwall Curling Club. The defending champs from last year’s event in Regina are the Earl Stephenson and Warren Johnson team from Winnipeg MB. The Montague Curling Club rink of Basil and Sterling Higginbotham won the B consolation prize.

Although this is an “open” event,  entries are reserved for the top two teams from each of BC, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan. Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and PEI. There are 32 spots available for other teams, for a total of 48 teams. Entry fee for this event is $120 per 2 person team, with a pay-per-win format, 5 games guaranteed, plus a banquet, and championship and consolation events. Entry deadline is March 1st. For more info, contact Shirley Lank  at (902) 621-0258 or lankshire.farms@pei.sympatico.ca, or visit StickCurling.ca. To enter the national event, send team roster with cheque to: 2013 PEI-National Stick. 780 Route 225, North Wiltshire, PE   C0A 1Y0.

Sympathies extended

Members of the Cornwall Curling Club would like to extend sincere sympathy to club member and webmaster Derek MacEwen, former junior coordinator and Canada Games coach Nancy Yeo, and their son Michael on the passing of Nancy’s mother, Wilna Yeo, who curled out of the Silver Fox, and is a two-time PEI Masters and one-time Maritime Masters champion. Her grandson, Spencer Wicks, from Newfoundland, played at our club last year in the Atlantic University Curling Championships, where they were the defending champs.

Help us get a handle on sponsorship for new handles!

handles

The Board of Directors is looking for volunteers to help coordinate a drive for new handles for our curling rocks. It has been some time since they have been replaced and we are looking for sponsors to help cover the costs. Sponsors could be companies or individuals and will have their names engraved on the rocks. We are seeking volunteers to help coordinate this effort.  If we can get a lot of volunteers for this it will make the job much easier. If you are interested, please contact Bev or let one of the Board Members know. We’ll announce more details about this in the new year.

House Call: Five Ways to speed up play (CCA)

[Here’s some great advice  on how to speed up your play!]

“Slow Play is best avoided as it makes the game drag on and on and sucks the fun right out of the sport,” says Kim Perkins. (Photo CCA/Michael Burns)

(by Kim Perkins) Slow play affects players at all levels. There are even teams at the Brier and Scotties who push limits and take their sweet, sweet time when playing. Slow Play is best avoided as it makes the game drag on and on and sucks the fun right out of the sport. There is a two hour time slot for a reason; somebody wants to clean your sheet after you’re done, or perhaps there’s another game scheduled behind you, not to mention that other players have places to go and things to do after the game.

Here are five ideas you can begin to implement right away that will help your game slide by at a reasonable pace:

1. Be on the Ice Five Minutes Early – If handshakes and introductions are taken care of beforehand, the actual game can start right on time.

2. Thrower Should be Ready to go When the Skip Takes Control – Once the opposition has released, the next player should be moving quickly into the hack to clean their stone and get set up so they’re ready to throw as soon as their skip takes control of the house. The sweepers can take care of watching what happens with the opposition’s stone. The thrower just needs to focus on being prepared to throw.

3. Practice Non-Democratic Curling – Input about strategy at every turn is very rarely appreciated or productive. Ultimately the skip is in charge of skipping. If you’re not pleased with your skip’s strategy, on ice is not the place to discuss it. Not only does undermining the skip crush his or her confidence, but it also slows down the game. The person skipping the team has to be empowered to call the shots whether they’re new or not. Comments from the peanut gallery should be kept to a minimum. If you really feel overall strategy needs to be addressed, do it over a drink after the game or during a team practice session.

4. Do Not Pull Out the Oppositions’ Stones – This is an archaic and dangerous “courtesy” that has been on its way out for a long time. Not only are you wasting time and creating a tripping hazard by pulling out your opponents stone, you also have no idea what order they’re throwing their rocks in. Perhaps the second is throwing stones 3 and 8 because the skip doesn’t like how the 8 rock runs. There is no way for you to know this so by taking out their rock you are now wasting your time and theirs.

5. Don’t Worry about the Rocks Being in Order in the Corner – That’s right… who cares. Last time I checked I was easily able to find my rock whether or not it was in correct numerical order. At worst you have a 2 in 8 chance of grabbing your stone. Teams waste a lot of time putting rocks in perfect order when it really just doesn’t matter. The only time you need to worry about putting the rocks in order is at the end of the game when you’re leaving the sheet.

These are just a few ideas to speed up your game. There are plenty of other things you can do to keep things moving along at a nice clip. Try to put as many speedy-play ideas as possible into practice without losing focus on the game. There’s nothing worse than having a reputation as THE SLOW TEAM. Save yourselves and keep moving forward.

Pitre, an Alberton native who previously curled out of the Western Community Curling Club, along with third stone Tony Nabuurs and second stone Parker O’Connor, won Sunday’s final 7-1. Lead Noah O’Connor was sidelined with an injury.

The Pitre rink, coached by Arny Nabuurs, finished the three-day event 6-1 (won-lost), losing its only game to Alex MacFadyen of Summerside – the same rink Smith beat 8-7  to move on to Sunday’s final.

On the women’s side, the Jennifer Armstrong rink of the Fredericton Curling Club defeated the Emily Manuel foursome from Halifax’s Mayflower Curling Club 9-2 in the final.

Armstrong beat the Cornwall Curling Club’s Veronica Smith rink 10-5 in the semifinal, and ended the weekend with a 6-1 record.

Flashback to the Scots’ visit back in 2003

While the Scots will be returning to our Club in January to once again compete in the Strathcona Cup, they were also here a decade ago, back in January 2003. I dusted off the old digital photo album, going back to the original files to enlarge the pictures so they conform to today’s screen sizes. Here is the album (click to view):

Cornwall to once again battle the Scots in the Strathcona Cup

Strathcona Cup Tour

The Strathcona Cup Tour returns to Canada in January, with male curlers from Scotland taking on curlers from all 10 provinces, in the oldest international curling event in the world, which first took place in 1902.

“The Scots have selected the 60 curlers who will be coming to Canada,” reports Hugh McCarrel, Canadian Chairman of the 2013 Strathcona Cup Tour. “They have been split into three tours of 20.”

Bill Duncan

Bill Duncan, President of the Royal Caledonia Curling Club (Scotland’s curling organization), will be touring with the Scots and will be splitting his time equally among the tours.

Mr. Duncan says  “The Strathcona Cup Tour 2013 promises to be one of the busiest and challenging of all tours, with curlers from all walks of life coming together to compete in the true spirit of curling. We will be heading off determined to bring the Strathcona Cup back home with us”

The Scots arrive in Canada on January 9th and will attend opening banquets in Halifax, Ottawa, and Vancouver, representing the three tours – East, Central and West.

“For the first time, all ten provinces are included in the tour,” says McCarrel.  “The East tour after leaving Halifax, will head to St. John’s, Newfoundland, for their first-ever visit.”

Click for information on the Scottish curlers who are coming to Eastern Canada

The Tour’s last visit to PEI was in 2003, while Roddie MacLean and Jim Farquharson from the Cornwall Curling Club went to Scotland for the event in January 2009. This time, the Scots will be curling at four PEI clubs:

The Charlottetown Curling Complex on January 18 at 4 pm,

The 2013 tour wraps up with a closing banquet at the Burlington Golf and Country Club on January 31st.

The Strathcona Cup champion is determined based on the cumulative results of all the games played, in this case, 434 games in over 100 Clubs.  McCarrel reports that over 1,700 Canadians will participate as opposition and hosts for the Scots.

Health and Wellness Minister Currie congratulates PEI Special Olympics Curling Team (PEI Gov’t)

CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI– Health and Wellness Minister Doug Currie took the opportunity today to congratulate Prince Edward Island’s Special Olympics Curling Team, who will be receiving the  2012 Special Olympics Canada Team of the Year award Thursday evening in Toronto.

Photo: (L-R):: Monique Gauthier (lead), Greg St. John (skip), Minister Doug Currie, Ann Doucette (assistant coach) and Dick St. John (coach). Photo credit: Brian Simpson, PEI Gov’t

“It has been a phenomenal year for this team,” said Minister Currie. “They have exemplified the spirit of fair play, excellence and inclusiveness. As Minister responsible for Sport, I want to congratulate these tremendous athletes, as well as their coaches and their families.”

The PEI Special Olympics curling team consists of:

• Dick St. John (coach)

• Ann Doucette (assistant coach)

• Monique Gauthier (lead)

• Chris MacPherson (second)

• Phillip Chugg (mate)

• Greg St. John (skip)

• John Anthony Laybolt (5th player)

The team started the year winning gold at the 2012 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games this past February. In May, they were named PEI Curling’s Team of the Year, and this Thursday, they will be in Toronto to receive their award as 2012 Special Olympics Canada’s Team of the Year.

“Our department is a proud supporter of Special Olympics PEI and their mission to ensure that every Islander with an intellectual disability has access to sport and recreation programs,” said Minister Currie.

PEI Special Olympics Curling Team to be honoured Thursday in Toronto (CCA)

(by Jean Mills, for the Canadian Curling Association)

In February they were gold medalists at the 2012 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games. In May they were named PEI Curling’s Team of the Year. Now there’s one more honour ahead for PEI’s Special Olympics curling team. On Thursday, November 29 in Toronto, these curlers and their coaches will take the stage to receive their award as 2012 Special Olympics Canada’s Team of the Year.

Now in its 24th year, the Special Olympics Canada Awards are decided through a detailed selection process. Nominations from each province and territory are sent to a committee from the National Board of Directors who narrow the field and return the shortlist to provincial and territorial chapters for final selection.

Writes coach Dick St. John: “This is the official picture taken by/for SOPEI just days before we left for St. Albert and the National Winter Games in February 2012. Good Looking Crew! We decided we were going for Gold but if we didn’t get Gold we’d look good in the attempt.” Standing is Dick St. John (Coach), Monique Gauthier(Lead), Ann Doucette(Assistant Coach), Phillip Chugg(Mate); Sitting is Greg St. John(Skip), John Anthony Laybolt(5th Player/Lead), Chris MacPherson(Second)” (Photo courtesy Special Olympics PEI)

For skip Greg St. John, third Phillip Chugg, second Chris MacPherson, and leads Monique Gauthier and John Anthony Laybolt (who also serves as fifth player), along with their head coach Dick St. John and assistant coach Ann Doucette, this well-deserved honour comes after years of hard work.

“In less than 10 short years, these gold medal-winning PEI athletes grew from a handful of individuals whose main concern was about not slipping and falling on the ice, to a team which despite the undersized pool of curlers in our small province, developed personal, technical and team building skills and went on to demonstrate, on the Canadian stage, just how this major feat could be accomplished,” wrote parent and team manager Paula Gauthier in a letter to the nominating committee for the Special Olympics Canada Team of the Year Award.

According to coach Dick St. John, the successes enjoyed by the team are the result of dedicated preparation – conditioning, on-and-off-ice training, team building activities, not to mention weekly practices at the Charlottetown Curling Club, league play at the Cornwall Curling Club, and participation in local bonspiels.

The team also benefited from the support of its provincial organization, Special Olympics PEI, who helped finance training for the coaches as well as providing opportunities for competition within the Maritimes.

Winning the gold medal at the national Special Olympics championship was a tremendous success, says St. John, but there was more to that victory than a medal: “The players grew as individuals and as a team through the experience.”

And none of it could have happened, says assistant coach Ann Doucette, “without the support of Special Olympics PEI, parents and guardians, volunteers, curling clubs and organizations, sport professionals, and last but not least the coaches who were with them every step of the way.”

“It is such a privilege to work with Special Olympics athletes,” says St. John. “While I can provide them with guidance, opportunities and encouragement, I often think that I am the net beneficiary from their commitment, enthusiasm and friendship.”

The 24th Annual Special Olympics Canada Awards take place Thursday, November 29 in Toronto to recognize and celebrate “outstanding performances and contributions of Special Olympics athletes, coaches and volunteers” to the Special Olympics movement.

Kenmac Exclusive! Santa draws to the button

We’ll get to the results of the Kenmac Opening Spiel eventually, but we just received, direct from the North Pole, some exclusive shots of Santa, who made his curling debut on the weekend, attempting, and almost executing, a draw to the button, so we thought we’d get them to you before Bruce Rainnie does!

Here’s Santa stretching after a long sleigh ride before he goes out on the ice.

Here he is, cleaning the reindeer “byproducts” from his boots before going on to the ice,

Looks like he’s better at delivering presents than rocks!

Considering the delivery, the results are pretty good!

Smith, Gallant rinks capture Fall Fling titles (Journal)

(by Nancy MacPhee)

SUMMERSIDE – The Veronica Smith rink from the Cornwall Curling Club beat out Summerside’s Jenny McLean for the top women’s prize at the Maritime Junior Fall Fling for Cash at the Silver Fox Curling Club on Sunday afternoon.

Nancy MacPhee/Journal Pioneer

Skip Veronica Smith, who’s from the Cornwall Curling Club, keeps an eye on the action during Sunday’s final at the Maritime Junior Fall Fling for Cash.

The women’s final went to 10 ends with McLean, on her last stone, unable to get the two points needed for Smith to throw her final stone and force a possible 11th end.

The final score was 6-4.

“It was our first final for the Fall Fling,” said McLean, who finished the weekend with a 5-2 (won-lost) record. “We are very pleased.”

One of McLean’s wins during the three-day bonspiel was, ironically, against the Smith rink. The score was 6-4.

Smith said that loss helped her team regroup and prepare the final.

“You know what you have to improve on,” said the skip. “We decided we would go in with a different strategy.

“The extra two ends gave us the chance to catch up and do well.”

The Smith rink, comprised of third stone Katie Fullerton, second Sabrina Smith, the skip’s sister, and lead Chloe McCloskey, has been curling together for 12 years.

It’s a family affair, said Smith, who is coached by her father, Paul.

“They are always there for me and they are always making their shots,” said the 18-year-old from Crapaud. “We stick together pretty well.”

Both teams will be back at The Fox in December for the next big junior bonspiel.

Smith, the under-17 provincial champion, is looking to defend her title in March while McLean, the under-15 provincial champ, is hoping to unseat Smith.

On the men’s side, it was the Chris Gallant rink of the Charlottetown Curling Complex that walked away with the top prize in their division, beating the Jonathan Crouse team 8-2 in a game that was called after six ends of play.

“It’s our third spiel this year,” said Gallant. “We struggled in the other spiels.

“We kind of pulled it together this weekend.”

It was the 19-year-old’s first time as skip at the Fall Fling, although he has competed in the event three previous times. His team, coached by Peter Gallant and Derrick Cameron, consists of third stone Kyle Holland, second stone Taylor McInnis and lead Andrew Cameron.

“We got off to a bit of a slow start,” said the first-year engineering student at UPEI. “The first two games we were down three halfway through the game.

“We came back with strong finishes to the game. We really picked it up Saturday, and today (Sunday) we played well.”

Gallant finished the weekend 7-0.

Cornwall’s Veronica Smith and Ch’town’s Chris Gallant teams win Fox Fall Fling

The 6th annual Fall Fling Junior Cashspiel wrapped up this afternoon at the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club in Summerside, with the Veronica Smith team from Cornwall defeating the Jenny McLean foursome from the host club 6-4 in the junior women’s final, and Charlottetown’s Chris Gallant rink going undefeated in the event, beating the Jonathan Crouse rink from Truro 8-2 in only six ends to win the junior men’s final.

In the junior women’s final,  the hometown McLean team, which includes Lauren MacFadyen, Ava Coulter, and Emily VanIderstone, and is coached by Dr. Don Vickerson, drew first blood, with a single in the opening end. The next three ends were blanked, and the Smith team, with Katie Fullerton at third, Sabrina Smith at second, and Chloe McCloskey at lead stone, with Paul Smith coaching, evened the score with a 5th end single. McLean had a single in six, with Smith moving ahead with a triple in the seventh. The teams traded deuces in eight and nine, and Smith ran McLean out of rocks in the final end.

In the semis, the McLean rink recovered from a four-one deficit at the hands of the Lindsey Doucet team from CFB Halifax, which includes Summerside area native Anita Casey at second, taking singles in ends four through seven to grab the lead and pull out an 8-6 win. Smith also had a come-from-behind victory in her semi. Trailing 3-1 after six ends to the Mary Myketyn-Driscoll rink from Truro, the Cornwall skip scored singles in ends seven through nine to pull ahead. The Truro team tied it up with a single in end ten, but a triple in the extra end gave Smith the ticket to the final. All four teams in the semi-finals had 4-1 records in round robin play.

The Gallant team, which includes third Kyle Holland, second Taylor McInnis, and lead Andrew Cameron, with coaches Peter Gallant and Derrick Cameron, came on strong with a four point first end, and stole a single in the second, to build up a 5-0 lead after only two ends in the junior men’s final. The Crouse rink, which includes Andrew Burgess, Jacob LeBlanc, and Herman Suther, with coach Craig Burgess, got on the scoreboard with a single in three, but Gallant responded with a deuce in four, and it was all over after the teams traded singles in ends five and six.

Crouse advanced to the final with a 10-4 win over Tyler Smith of Cornwall in the morning semi-finals, while Gallant beat Montague’s Cody Dixon 9-4 in the other semi. Crouse and Gallant both had perfect 5-0 win-loss records in round robin action, with Smith going 4-1, and Dixon 3-2.

The winning Veronica Smith and Chris Gallant teams took home $600, with $300 going to the runner-up Jonathan Crouse and Jenny McLean rinks and $125 to the remaining semi-finalists.

12 junior men’s and an equal number of junior women’s teams took part in the cashspiel.

The Amanda MacLean rink from Cornwall was 4-0 going into the final round robin draw, but lost their game, and lost out in the team draw to the button competition for total points to determine placings for the semi.

On the men’s side, Chris Gallant and his Charlottetown rink went through the round robin with a 5-0 record, and play Cody Dixon of Montague (3-2) in one game, while Jonathan Crouse and his Truro Curling Club rink, who are also unbeaten at  5-0, plays Tyler Smith (4-1) from Cornwall.

Wednesday evening ladder league – B pool revised

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Jack Ferguson team will not be joining us this season. To accommodate this without having to redo everything, I have changed the B pool schedule by moving the bye teams into the Ferguson rink’s slot each week. This will mean that teams will play more than a full round robin – playing a team or two twice. We also had a bye the first week. Consequently, we will have to factor in the games played, when figuring out the standings at the end of the round. Here is the revised Round One draw (no changes have been made to the A pool):

Ladder League Opening Draw

(B Pool revised after week one due to a team dropping out)

Week 1:  Nov. 7

6:30 pm Howard Johnson Dutch Inn A Pool
Ice 1: A6-Paul Durant vs A3-Gord Peters
Ice 2: A8-Paul Neima vs A1-Bob MacWilliams
Ice 3: A5-Ray Biagé vs A4-Rick Doiron
Ice 4: A7-Mark MacDonald vs A2-David Younker

8:30 pm Griffin’s Service Centre B Pool
Ice 1: B6-Mathieu Boudreau vs B3-Leigh Farrar
Ice 3: B5-Karen Currie vs B4-Kelly Watts
Ice 4: B7-Jack Ferguson vs B2-Greg Groves (Groves won by default)
Bye: B1-Lew Black

Week 2: Nov. 14
6:30 pm Griffin’s Service Centre B Pool
Ice 2:  B3-Leigh Farrar vs B5-Karen Currie

Kenmac Energy Spiel deadline extended

Kenmac

The Kenmac Opening Spiel is fast approaching.  We have nine teams signed up already.  We’d really like to have at least 12 teams – preferably 16. We have extended the sign up deadline to Wednesday November 14th.  The draws will be made up on Wednesday evening.

We have also relaxed the team entry criteria to encourage more teams to enter. Teams are no longer required to be mixed but please keep in mind this is a fun spiel so no team stacking please!

See you next weekend!

Cornwall’s MacLean team enjoyed Ottawa curling experience (Journal)

(by Eric McCarthy)

WEST DEVON – The MacLean siblings fell just two games short of facing each other in the consolation final of the OVCA Junior Superspiel in Ottawa-area curling rinks last weekend.

Both the Matthew MacLean rink from Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary and the Amanda MacLean team from the Cornwall Curling Club finished pool play with 1-3 (won-lost) records. Both teams bowed out after their first consolation-round games, dashing their hopes of playing each other in the nation’s capital.

“It was a great experience, just the high competition level and the chance to be in such a big tournament with teams from across Canada and some from around the world,” Matthew commented. “We did play pretty good, but not that lucky, I guess.”

A highlight for the Amanda MacLean rink, the 2011 Prince Edward Island Canada Games team, was beating the Ontario Canada Games team of Lauren Horton in their first game of the superspiel. Team Horton won the bronze medals at the Canada Games.

Amanda MacLean – Skip, Kassinda Bulger – Third, Emily Gray – Second, Aleya Quilty – Lead, Shelley Gray – Coach, Glen MacLean – Coach

Alan MacLean – Lead, Kevin Gallant – Second, Marshall Smallman – Third, Matthew MacLean – Skip, Glen MacLean – Coach
