Good Morning Volunteers!
I would like to extend to you a very big thank you for volunteering with the 2010 Dominion Curling Club Championship here in Charlottetown and Cornwall.
Kate has already updated you about the final results, but I just wanted to let you know how much you were appreciated for all of the assistance you gave to the players and host committee and especially myself. It has been great working with you all and I hope that you enjoyed the event.
At the closing banquet last night, all of the guest speakers encouraged the players to go back to their provinces to promote the event in their home clubs…there was loud applause that they would not as they wished to return because of the hospitality of the Dominion and yourselves. You have all made a very big impression on the players and I thank you for that.
All the best,
Karen Currie
Chair of Hospitality
Thanks to everyone who went to watch, and everyone who helped out at the Cornwall Curling Club. Play wrapped up here this afternoon with the end of the round robin. There were originally plans to have women’s semis here tonight, but they have been moved to the Charlottetown club. Volunteers are reminded of the Volunteer Appreciation Night tonight beginning around 9:30 pm at the Charlottetown club. Hot dogs will be sold in aid of the Canadian Paraplegic Association, and the silent auction and other charity fundraisers will wrap up.
Forty players from the event will be back at Cornwall beginning at 9:30 am Sunday for a celebrity curling clinic. The event finals go at 2 pm at the Charlottetown club.

National curling club championships underway today in Charlottetown, Cornwall

Despite a lack of experience playing together, sometimes a team just clicks.
Donald Clarey and his Montague rink was only put together about a year ago before beginning play today at The Dominion national curling championships in Charlottetown and Cornwall.
The championships, in only their second year, will see a total of 28 men’s and women’s teams from across the country compete until Sunday for the title of national club champion.
Clarey, along with third Larry Richards, second Michael Clarey and lead Cameron Lerch, won the Montague Curling Club title and went on to win the provincial club championship last March.
“(The Dominion) will be a big event,” said Clarey. “We’ll have a lot of fun.”
The Summerside rink of skip Kim Aylward, third Jeanne Duffenais, second Michelle Weaver and lead Debbie Caissy will represent P.E.I. in the women’s division.
A banquet on Tuesday evening at the APM Centre in Cornwall kicked off activities at The Dominion Curling Club Championship, Canada’s first ever championship for club curlers. Round robin play gets underway Wednesday morning at 10 at both the Charlottetown and Cornwall curling clubs. There is no admission charge, but proceeds from daily 50X50 draws, raffles, and other fundraising activities will go to benefit the Canadian Paraplegic Association (CPA).
Master of ceremonies for the banquet was Robbie Doherty, second on the Robert Campbell rink, which won the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship on Saturday. Robbie kicked off the evening by introducing Premier Robert Ghiz, who welcomed the 28 men’s and women’s curling teams, from all provinces and territories to the Island. Other speakers included Tourism minister Robert Vessey, Danny Lamoureux, Director, Championship Services and Curling Club Development at the Canadian Curling Association, Paul Cudmore, Executive Director of the PEI Branch of the CPA, George Cooke, President and CEO of The Dominion General Insurance Company, Leigh Armstrong, Branding Coordinator for The Dominion, returning curler from last year’s inaugural event Kristy Frampton from Nunavut, and Jim Mann, host chair for next year’s event in Richmond BC.

The highlight of the evening was an inspiring speech and slideshow from two-time wheelchair curling Paralympic gold medallist Sonja Gaudet, from Vernon BC, who spoke about how she managed to bring sports back into her life after her spinal cord injury, and what it means to compete as an athlete at events such as the Paralympics. She also invited curling clubs to integrate wheel chair curling into their programs.
The opening ceremonies for The Dominion will take place Wednesday evening at 7:30 pm at the Cornwall Curling Club, with round robin play wrapping up on Saturday, and the men’s and women’s finals going Sunday at 2 pm at the Charlottetown Curling Club.

December 5th is the entry deadline for PEI’s first provincial curling championship of the season, the Pepsi Juniors, for curlers age 20 and under, which takes place January 2-4 at the Montague Curling Club. There will be a new junior men’s champion this year, as Brett Gallant of Charlottetown, who skipped the last five junior men’s winning teams, along with a Canadian Championship and a World silver medal, has elected to move up to the Labatt Tankard men’s event this year. Defending junior women’s are the Sarah Fullerton rink from Cornwall. The Tyler Smith rink, who will also be competing in the Canada Games, Feb. 11-27 in Halifax, are among the early junior men’s entrants, along with the Spencer Pitre and Alex Matters teams from Charlottetown.
This year’s champions will advance to the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, January 29-February 5, 2011, in Calgary Alberta.
Entry fee is $45 per player. Enter online at PEICurling.com.
The “Eye on the Hog” hogline violation detection system will be in use at our Club during The Dominion Canadian Curling Club Championship (unfortunately, it goes back after!).
It uses innovative technology to detect a magnetic strip frozen into the ice at the hog line and a bare hand touching the handle. Circuitry in the handle turns on green lights after a valid release or flashes red lights if a violation has occurred.

The system is activated when the rock is tilted for cleaning. Circuitry turns off when not in use to extend the battery life to over 150 games. Operation of the touch sensor is confirmed by green lights that flash when the handle is not touched. Lights are off during delivery to prevent distraction.
The Jackson/Triggs Ladies Curling Spiel will take place Saturday December 4, 2010 at the Cornwall Curling Club.
First draw is at 9:00 AM. Morning snacks, a light lunch, and a pot luck dinner following the last draw will be provided by the Cornwall ladies.
Entry Fee is $100 per Team. To register contact Valerie Acorn at 314-5682 or Bev McCormick at the Club – 566-4427 or manager@cornwallcurling.com. Please Register by November 30, 2010.
The first 16 teams to sign up will be accepted.
Please come and join us for our ladies spiel which is guaranteed to be a great time!!
It was quite an ending to the A final Kenmac Energy Opening Bonspiel, as Angus Kennedy, down one coming home with hammer and lying one, tried to draw for the winning point, but had to settle for the tying single, forcing a draw to the button, which he put on the 4 foot. Opposing skip John DeLuca was a bit heavy, ending up in the 12 foot. Kennedy, who was also on last year’s winning team, was joined this year by Myrna Sanderson, and a couple of new curlers, Myrna’s daughter Angela Sanderson, who has recently returned to PEI from points west, and Angela’s husband Brent Irving. John DeLuca’s teammates were Debbie Rhodenhizer, Mike Lafontaine, and Cindy Nicholson.

Besides the curling, events included curling trivia, solving “Wordles”, a curler bingo game where you had to get signatures from fellow curlers who had accomplished certain things during their curling careers (e.g. scored and eight ender, or bought new shoes recently), a little bit of Karaoke, and a game of Deal or No Deal, with Matt Hanus and Betty Howatt going on stage in search of the $100 prize (one of them did get $40).
Saturday lunch included meat on a bun with salad, while supper included spaghetti, and caesar salad.
While the champions were on the ice for the final draw, the rest of us took part in an auction, with Angus Davies serving as auctioneer. Monopoly money earned from our prowess in solving the trivia, bingo and puzzles, and from our lack of prowess for losing our games was bid for mystery prizes, which included candles and glassware. The bidding was fast and furious, with Bob Fowler and Nucker Richards almost coming to blows over one item. The Club president was outbid for the final item, not knowing that money was being passed under the table to the opposing bidders from the event organizers.
For all the incriminating evidence, check out our slideshow (pics from Deal or No Deal will be along later).
Thanks to all the organizers, including Rob Young and Sherri Boutelier, Bob Fowler, Angus Davies, all the kitchen helpers, the ice staff, and everyone else involved.
Thanks as usual to our long-time sponsors Gordon Matthews and Kenmac Energy, your PEI distributors of Petro Canada products, including gas, heating oil, and propane. Be warned: the double-digit temperatures we enjoyed during the bonspiel will NOT continue all winter! Contact Kenmac today, and get your furnace serviced and fueled for the upcoming heating season.

The annual Fall Fling Junior Cashspiel wrapped up this afternoon with two close finals at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside, with the Spencer Pitre team from Charlottetown edging the Alex Matters rink, also from Charlottetown, by a 10-9 score in the junior men’s s final, and the Lindsay Doucet rink from Chester Nova Scotia getting by the Sarah Fullerton team from Cornwall 7-6 in the junior women’s championship game.
Pitre was trailing 9-4 after eight ends in his ten end final, but made an incredible recovery, taking four points in the ninth, and stealing a deuce in the tenth for the win. Other members of the Pitre team are Matthew Nabuurs, Eric Pidgeon, and Connor MacPhee, with coach Peter Pidgeon. Playing with runner-up Matters were Chris Gallant, Kyle Holland, and Andrew Cameron, with coach Derrick Cameron.
Doucet and her team of Sarah Spafford, Meryn Avery, and Ellen Graham, with coach John Atherton, were trailing by one coming home, after Fullerton scored a deuce in end eight, and stole a single in the ninth, but Doucet took the win with a deuce in the final frame. Fullerton’s teammates are Michelle McQuaid, Sara MacRae, and Whitney Young, with coach Angela Hodgson.
In the junior men’s semi-finals, Pitre beat Cornwall’s Jeff Taylor team by a 9-2 score, while the Matters rink got by the Sam Ramsay team by a 6-5 score. The junior women’s semis saw Doucet score a triple in the 10th to tie her game, and steal a single in the extra end to win 8-7 over the Mary Myketyn Driscoll of CFB Halifax. In the other semi-final, Fullerton edged Tara LeGay of the Halifax Mayflower club 9-8.
Twelve junior women’s and ten junior men’s teams took part in the annual cashspiel. The winning Pitre and Doucet teams each went home with $550, with $275 going to the runner-up Matters and Fullerton rinks. The remaining semi-finalists, Taylor, Ramsay, Driscoll, and LeGay, won $125 each.
We’ll have a full report on the Kenmac Energy Opening Bonspiel later, but in the meantime, check out the photos in the Photos section of CornwallCurling.com, by clicking here.

Approximately one-hundred volunteers crowded into the Charlottetown Curling Club on Wednesday evening, for training night for the second annual The Dominion Curling Club Championship, Canada’s first-ever national curling club championship, being co-hosted by the Charlottetown and Cornwall curling clubs from November 23 to 28, with men’s and women’s curling teams from all provinces and territories competing.
An overview of the championship, and a rundown of the on and off ice activities for the curlers, which will include opening and closing ceremonies and banquets, pub crawls, and an East Coast night with the Jon Matthews band, was provided by event chair Leigh Armstrong, who then introduced Evan MacKinnon of the Canadian Paraplegic Association (CPA), the recipients of all profits from the event (although admission is free, a number of fundraising activities including 50X50 draws, raffles, and a silent auction will take place).
Kate Arkilander from event sponsor The Dominion General Insurance Company then reviewed the volunteer handbook, and the volunteers then went into breakout sessions to receive an overview of their particular volunteer duties.
During the evening, Paul Cudmore, Executive Director of the PEI branch of the CPA had the opportunity to try out the Charlottetown Curling Club’s new wheelchair lift, donated by The Dominion, making the sport of curling more accessible. One of the guest speakers during The Dominion will be Paralympic wheelchair curling gold medallist Sonja Gaudet, from BC.

PEI Junior Women’s champions, the Sarah Fullerton rink from our Club wrapped up play this afternoon in the John Shea Insurance OVCA Junior SuperSpiel, which took place over the weekend in Ottawa. They were the only PEI rink in the event, with teams from as far away as Switzerland.
The Fullerton rink, which includes Michelle McQuaid, Sara MacRae, and Whitney Young, lost their first two games, to Roxanne Perron of Quebec City, and Kendra Lilly of Sudbury, but won against Quebec’s Lisa Davies team on Friday night. On Saturday morning, the PEI rink lost 6-1 to the Stephanie Brown team from Kemptville ON., taking them out of the championship side of the event, and moving them into the consolation round.
On Sunday morning they edged the Colin Thomas rink from St. John’s 5-4 in consolation play [my nephew Spencer Wicks – Nancy’s sister’s son – is on that team.], but lost their noon game to Kendra Lilly of Sudbury by a 6-4 score. Lilly then lost to Gustav Eskillson of Sweden in the consolation final.
In the championship section, Winnipeg’s Joey Witherspoon won the men’s final, 8-7 in an extra end over Mathew Camm of Ottawa, while Lauren Grey of Scottland won the women’s championship, with a 7-6 win over Katiie Lindsay of Toronto.

Good curling!
Welcome to another season of the Wednesday Night Ladder League, with the first round sponsored by Don Lowther Snow Removal.
We are pleased to welcome back all of last year’s teams (with a few lineup changes, and a few players still being recruited), with the exception of the Jeff Taylor rink, who have moved up to the big leagues (Tuesday). This means we have a “perfect” draw of 16 teams, with no byes. In keeping with our tradition of starting fresh each season, the first night, Oct. 20 will be Qualifier Night, with teams playing other teams at random, with the winners advancing to the A pool, and the runners-up going to the B.
Looking at the calendar, I see that we will have no curling on November 24, as The Dominion Curling Club Championships opening ceremonies and a women’s draw will be taking place here. After Qualifier Night, this gives us Oct. 27, Nov. 3, 10, 17 , Dec. 1, 8, 15, and 22 as dates before Christmas, and Jan. 5, 12, 19, 26, Feb. 2, 9, 16, 23, and March 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30 as dates after (we will not curl on Dec. 29). This makes 21 weeks divided by three full seven-night round robin draws, with the second round starting a week before Christmas (Dec. 22), and the final round beginning February 16. If we miss a night due to storms or other reasons, that night’s draw will be cancelled, and the schedule for subsequent nights will not change. We will follow last year’s format of having everyone from the A pool on at one time, and everyone from pool B on at the other, with the times swapping each night.
RULES: This is an open, semi-competitive team entry league. Eight end games, with any combination of male and/or female players permitted. To keep this league on a less competitive level than the Tuesday night league, no more than two players on one Wednesday night team may be members of the same Tuesday night competitive league team. This rule will also apply if spares are needed. If you call up a spare from your Tuesday team, they should be replacing another team member that plays on Tuesday night, so that there are no more than two Tuesday night players on the ice.
No ties: Skips will draw to the button (with sweeping) to resolve individual game ties. Only the throwing team may sweep the rock — the opposing team may not sweep behind the tee.
League Points will be awarded as follows:
3 points will be awarded for a win, 1 point for a loss, 0 points for a loss by default. Scores will be kept as well, to be used only in end-of-round tie resolution. In the event of a default, the non-defaulting team will receive a score of one point for each scheduled end.
At least one regular team member and at least three players in total must be present to avoid a default. Team members can play any position and can change from game to game. When teams are tied in points after a round, the win/loss record of those teams against each other shall be used to determine their ranking (provided that the two teams faced each other in the round). When the ranking of teams cannot be determined by comparing round win/loss records against the teams involved in the tie, the ranking shall be determined by the score differentials of the teams who are tied. If they are still tied, the full score differentials of the teams who are tied will be used.
In the event of a cancellation, the cancelled week will not be played, and all subsequent draws will remain where they were. Any cancellations will be posted on CornwallCurling.com.
Ladder format: At the end of each round, the bottom three teams from the A pool will descend the ladder to Pool B, while the top three teams from B will climb the ladder to A. The winners of both the A and B pools from each round, and the A pool runner-up in the final round will receive a prize at season end, courtesy of our generous sponsors.
The buzzer will be used to ensure the teams are off the ice within the 2-hour time period. If the buzzer sounds, teams will complete the current end in play to finish the game. If tied, the standard draw to the button will then take place.

All returning and new members are invited to join us for a fun evening of curling, pizza and munchies on Saturday, October 16th beginning at 4:00pm. You’ll have the chance to get back into curling with 2 four-end games as well as catch up with old friends and meet some new ones. You can sign up at the Club or call us at 566-4427 or email info@cornwallcurling.com, or Sherri at srboutilier@edu.pe.ca. Deadline to signup is Thursday evening. Entry fee is just $10 per person.
The draws schedule sheet mailed out to current club members indicated that daytime curling is held Monday through Thursday mornings. There is, in fact, daytime curling Monday through Friday mornings from 10 – noon (and has been since the Seniors competitive league was moved from Friday to another timeslot). We apologize for the typo! The online version has been corrected to reflect this change.

If you would like to try out the sport of curling, be sure to attend one of our free “Introduction to Curling” nights, October 12, 13, and 14, 2010 from 7-9 pm. Come one night, or all three if you wish (we will have beginner and more advanced sessions each night). There will be a lesson on curling, including its basic concepts and ethics, followed by a video, and then you will take to the ice to throw some rocks and have some fun. Bring clean sneakers, and wear stretchy or loose pants, and a light jacket. Everything else will be provided. These sessions are for adults only (junior curlers receive instruction as part of their regular program) and there is no charge, and no obligation to join the Club.
Curling is a wonderful sport to pass the winter, get some exercise, socialize, and have some fun!

The Club ice plant, complete with a brand new condenser unit, is running, and base coats are being applied by head icemaker Lance Lowther (pictured) and his crew, in preparation for ice availability in time for our free curling instruction, which begins on Oct. 12.
Also coming this year is Jet Ice, courtesy of The Dominion Curling Club Championship, which our club is co-hosting with Charlottetown, along with additional end-zone viewing cameras at the near end. Jet Ice is a water treatment system designed to ensure consistent ice from end-to-end.

Getting to Know Sarah Fullerton
Sarah is building up quite a collection of Prince Edward Island honours over her young career. She claimed her first provincial curling title way back in 2003 when she captured the P.E.I. 11 and under title, and followed up three years later with a 15 and under title, and between 2006 and 2009, won three 17 and under crowns and finished second another time.
Fullerton also represented P.E.I. at the 2007 Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse, gaining her first taste of national-level competition.
One of the up-and-coming stars on the Atlantic Canada curling scene, Fullerton was named her province’s Junior Female Athlete of the Year in 2009, and her team was named the province’s Team of the Year in 2008.
Fullerton’s dream of curling at the M and M Meat Shops Canadian junior championships finally came true last December when she, Michelle McQuaid, Sara MacRae and Whitney Young, along with coach Brenda MacMillan, won the provincial junior championship, and went on to post a respectable 6-6 record to place sixth at the nationals in Trois-Rivieres, Que.
Fullerton also gives back to the sport; she’s a Level 2 certified coach and has taught young curlers at her home club in Cornwall. And off the ice, she’s equally successful; in 2009, she won a variety of scholarships (PEI Mutual Education Trust Scholarship, UPEI Frederic S. Davison Scholarship and the 2009 UPEI Inspiring Excellence Entrance Scholarship), in addition to working for Parks Canada as a heritage presenter at Green Gables Heritage Place and Province House.
Quick Hits with Sarah Fullerton
Do you have any superstitions?
“I’m not overly superstitious but I have a lucky charm that I always keep in the pocket of my curling jacket.”
Three people, living or not, whom you would invite to a dinner party.
“Sandra Schmirler, Ellen Degeneres and Channing Tatum.”
If you could be a star any other sport, what would it be, and why?
“I would want to be a freestyle skier! I think it would be so thrilling and I’ve been really interested in it ever since Alexandre Bilodeau won the first Olympic gold medal for Canada, at home, last winter!”
If you could change any rule in curling, which one would it be, and why?
“It would be good to have a rule that if a rock picks you can re-throw it because it’s so unfortunate when your team or your opponent loses a good shot to a pick. It would also be fun to have a rule that rocks could hit the boards from the hogline in . . . that could get interesting!”
What music do you like to listen to before a game?
“Anything with a good beat really or something motivating that will get me pumped up!”
Favourite:
— Website? “Facebook”
— Order from Tim Hortons? “Toasted cheddar cheese bagel with cream cheese and an apple juice!”
— Vacation destination? “I really want to go to Australia and Scotland someday.”
— Junk food? “Popcorn with butter and dill pickle seasoning!”
Do you have any pet peeves?
“1. When people crack their knuckles or any other part of their body; 2. When people are late; 3. Complainers”
Three things you always travel with?
“1. Cell; 2. iPod; 3. Mastercard”
First thing on your Bucket List?
“Skydiving!”
Favourite pastime between draws at cashspiels?
“Checking Facebook, listening to music and snacking!”
One thing most people don’t know about you?
“I’m scared of bats.”
What is the biggest misconception about curlers?
“That we aren’t athletic.”
Your ideal shot to win an Olympic gold medal:
“Open draw to the four-foot!”
(Charlottetown Guardian) Not even a pair of arthritic knees can stop Sterling Stratton of Charlottetown from playing the sports he loves.
In 1988, at the age of 50, Stratton thought his curling days were over, but he was able to return to the rink after an extensive hiatus with the assistance of a device called a delivery stick.
He has never looked back since, winning numerous championships with the Cornwall Curling Club’s stick curling team.
The delivery stick hooks to the curling stone’s handle and allows players with restricted mobility to deliver a rock, using a release mechanism, from an upright position out of the hack.
With the use of a device that applies the same logic as the delivery stick, called a bowling arm, Stratton is again able to conquer his physical limitation and continue playing another sport he loves — lawn bowling.
Funeral for Mark Kinney, 33, is today
The Guardian
Former three-time provincial junior curling champion Mark Kinney was well known for his ability on the ice but off it he was described as the type of person who would do anything for a friend.
Our head icemaker Lance Lowther is recruiting volunteers for ice maintenance for the Dominion Canadian Curling Club Championship (Nov. 23-28). For this event, the ice will need to be scraped after every draw . The Dominion provides ice volunteers (working a required number of shifts) with jackets, and Lance has been asked to send in the sizes as soon as he has the ice crew together. If you are interested in helping with the ice, please call Lance at home at 566-2230. Thanks for helping out!
Mark Kinney, who curled out of the Cornwall Curling Club, and skipped PEI Pepsi Junior championship rinks in 1993, 1995, and 1997, passed away suddenly on Canada Day.

The Commercial League was set up on a trial basis this past season, and was a success. There will be a Commercial League on Monday evenings, and possibly on Sunday for the upcoming season. The rates have been set at $600 a team for the season. Get in touch with the Club if you are interested in putting in a team.
