Gord Peters foursome wins annual golf tourney

The weather couldn’t have been any better again this year at the Cornwall Curling Club’s annual 9 hole best ball golf tournament at beautiful Countryview Golf Course in Fairview, with a great turnout again this year. As usual, there was some fine golfing on the course:

There was also lots of great conversation, and a drink or two, on the deck:

There were two barbecues in action, as Kimball (pictured), Bob, Carole, and others cooked the burgers and sausages to perfection:

Finally, all the teams had finished their rounds, and it was time to hand out the hardware. Roy Coffin picked up a prize for closest to the line (he was ON it), and for the long drive on hole number 6 (open to men and women).

Linda Fairhurst was also a double winner, capturing both closest to the pin and longest drive honours for the women.

The team of (right to left) Neil Smith, Marg Stewart, Eileen Blanchard, and Rupert Sweetapple won the coveted award for the “Most Determined” team. There were actually three teams tied for the highest score, and the Smith team were the lucky winners of the random draw.

The winning team of the day was the foursome of Gord Peters, Melody Beck, Matt Thomson, and Mike Lafontaine:

Two Cornwall Curling Club skips, Veronica Smith and Sarah Fullerton, were among the winners of the PEI Curling Association’s annual ADL/Sport PEI Curling Awards last night at the Charlottetown Curling Club.

The Kathy O’Rourke rink were the winners of the Team of the Year honours. The team, which includes skip Kathy O’Rourke, who throws second stone, Erin Carmody, who throws fourth, third stone Geri-Lynn Ramsay, and lead Tricia Affleck, were the first PEI team ever to play in a final game at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts Canadian women’s curling championships. Other nominees in the category were last year’s winners, the Brett Gallant foursome, and the Sarah Fullerton team, provincial junior women’s champions. Carmody and O’Rourke were also co-winners in the Female Adult category. Gallant, who set a record this season for the most wins at the junior nationals, won the Junior Male category, while Fullerton won the Junior Female honours. The O’Rourke and Gallant teams are from the Charlottetown Curling Club, while Fullerton is from Cornwall.

Other winners were Rod MacDonald, skip of both the Provincial Men’s and Senior Men’s championship teams, who won the Adult Male honours, Matthew MacLean from the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary, who won the age 15 and under Junior Male category, and Veronica Smith of Cornwall, who took the 15 and Under Junior Female award. Glen MacLean from the Maple Leaf,  who coached several winning teams in the junior age categories, won the coach of the year honours, while Cliff Poirier of Summerside won the Official of the Year category. Audrey Callaghan, a volunteer for many years at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton, and on the PEI Curling Association Board of Directors, won for Volunteer of the Year, while a special recognition award was given to Marilyn Sutherland, long-time curling coach and Master Course Conductor for the PEICA.

Certificates were also given out to the sponsors of the provincial curling championships, in recognition for their continued support for PEI curling. The PEICA’s Annual General Meeting was held in advance of the awards ceremony, with the current slate of officers returning for another curling season. There will be a new Executive Director next year, with Stephen Marchbank leaving to concentrate solely on basketball, and Amy Duncan taking over the PEICA Executive Director reins.

AGM Highlights

Here are some highlights from tonight’s Annual General Meeting. Draft minutes will follow at a later date.

Hank Kamphuis, Cindy Nicholson,  Cyndi Russell, Colleen Solterman are leaving the Board of Directors, either completing their three year term, or leaving for other reasons. Four new board members were acclaimed:  Bob Fowler, Lorianne Davies, and Sherry Boutelier for a three year term, and Arleen Harris for a two year period (she had already filled in for much of this season).

Bylaw change approved to have icemaker report to manager was approved.

Rodd Greco team entry bonspiel to be replaced by new Senior Mixed event, replacing PEI Senior Mixed, which the PEICA is no longer interested in hosting.

Bonspiels all profitable this year.

Club had many provincial championship and runner-up teams this year.

Acquisitions included end zone cameras for ice house, along with monitors, an automated defibrilator (AED), timing tables (built by Bob MacWilliams) .

Two new advertising signs purchased – Century 21 (Mike Lafontaine) and Traction truck parts (Gord Peters).

Juniors program in transition year. Successful with help from Greg Groves, Geri-Lynn Ramsay, Ann Worth.

Seniors continues to be successful. $1600 in bank for future projects.

President De Luca reported a very successful year. Next year will be exciting too, with co-hosting of national The Dominion Club Curling Championship. Lots of volunteers needed.

Finances similar to last year. Memberships constant but other costs are rising.

Club renovations: plans reviewed, 11 changes recommended by Club committee. No start date yet. Town not planning to replace ice plant – just the failed condenser. Club will be new construction all on one level, at the other end of the ice house (by the pool), with stadium-style seating for viewing the ice.

Artist’s conception of proposed new clubhouse:

New Clubhouse drawing

PEICA President Shirley Lank reported that a new three year rotation for events is being proposed when current rotation expires after next season. A proposal is being brought up at the PEICA AGM to grow the Scotties by introducing a “Future Scotties” event at same dates and same club for female curlers who have not participated in Scotties in last five years. Eight teams. Also looking at having the Scotties at one club for the three years of the rotation in an effort to promote it fully and increase numbers. PEICA AGM is May 27 at the Charlottetown Curling Club.

Scholarships and Capital Improvement grants available from Curl Atlantic. Application deadline is May 30.

National Scotties profits to be divided among all seven clubs and PEICA.

Sarah Fullerton and Whitney Young from the PEI Junior Women’s Championship team presented the Club with a team picture as a token of their appreciation for all the help the Club has provided to them over the years.

Thanks to everyone for helping out club member Paul Horne!

Reports are that over $19,000 was raised at last Friday’s fundraiser for Club member Paul Horne, held at the North Shore Community Centre. with a huge crowd, including a large number of Cornwall Curling Club members, in attendance. Paul suffered a cardiac attack on the ice at the Club on January 18th, and has required home renovations, and will need ongoing occupational therapy and trips off-Island during the long rehabilitation process. As a result of this incident, with the help of sponsors including Cornwall Physiotherapy, the Senior curlers, and the family of one of our club founders, the late Rodney Walsh, the Club has acquired an automated defibrillator (AED), and put on CPR and AED  training for over 20 Club members and staff.

If you missed the benefit, but would still like to help out, Paul’s mailing address is Winsloe RR#9, C1E 1Z2.

From our archives, here’s a picture of Paul when he played third on the Peter Buchanan rink, who scored an eight-ender back in October 2008:

Pictured left to right are Peter Buchanan (skip), Neil Smith (lead), Gordon Canfield (second), and Paul Horne (third).

Long-time Cornwall member Shirley Lank wins Curl Atlantic award

Russ Howard, Shirley Lank

Photo (L-R):  Russ Howard, Shirley Lank

Olympic and two-time World curling champion Russ Howard was the guest speaker at the banquet of the Curl Atlantic Curling Symposium, which took place this weekend at Mount Allison University in Sackville New Brunswick.   His speech included recollections on his Olympics competition in Torino in 2006 and of the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver where he worked as a  TSN commentator.  He challenged Atlantic Canada curlers to set up a curling excellence centre like the one in Edmonton, and to work at improving ice conditions in the region, which would improve the playing experience for both competitive and recreational curlers.  He also noted that the lack of experience on arena ice has a negative effect on Atlantic curling teams, who  need the first few games at national competitions to adjust to the unfamiliar ice conditions.

Howard  presented this year’s  Investors Group Sport Volunteer Administrator Award to PEI Curling Association President Shirley Lank, who was honoured by Curl Atlantic for her dedication and service to the sport, both in PEI and across the Atlantic region.

More on May 7 AGM

As was mentioned previously, the Cornwall Curling Club’s Annual General Meeting and Awards Night will take place at the Club on Friday May 7, beginning at 6 pm. All Club members are encouraged to attend.  There will be free munchies (cold cuts and buns and other things).

One by-law amendment has been submitted for approval at the meeting:

Cornwall Curling Club by-law amendment

Current by-law:

. 3.4.1(a) management of staff (other than ice maker)

Proposed amendment:
. Remove the words (other than ice maker)

Reason for change:

The current wording does not clearly state who the ice maker reports to.  In the absence of specific wording it is assumed the Board would be responsible.

Paul Horne benefit huge success!

A huge crowd is on hand tonight at the benefit for Cornwall Curling Club member Paul Horne at  the North Shore Community Centre.  Paul, who suffered a significant cardiac attack on the ice at the Club on Monday, January 18th, was released from hospital on April 9th, and was in attendance to greet everyone at the fundraiser. Besides a lot of occupational therapy, renovations were required to accommodate Paul at home, and he will need to travel off Island for further tests. At tonight’s benefit, Krista Affleck, who had performed CPR on Paul at the Club, was congratulated by Paul and his wife Eileen for her courageous assistance.

Fundraising activities tonight included a silent auction, a 50X50 draw, and a live auction for some of the “big ticket” items, including a Cornwall Curling Club membership, donated by the Club, and purchased by Paul Neima.  Cornwall Club member Scott Jeffrey, who donated his Movin’ and Groovin’ DJ service (peidj.com) for the night, is on stage now, spinning the disks for the dance. Thanks to everyone who helped make this night a huge success!

Town moves ahead with plan to replace curling clubhouse, ice plant

DAVE STEWART
The Guardian
CORNWALL — The town is moving ahead with plans to replace the aging 40-year-old Cornwall Civic Centre.
Council held its annual public monthly meeting Wednesday night and although there wasn’t a resolution to vote on per se, the topic was raised.
Mayor Patrick MacFadyen said engineering firm CBCL has come back to the town with drawings and those drawings have now been passed on to the four user groups for approval — 50-plus, Lions’ Club, curling club and the town itself.
“Council looked at it and made a couple of changes,’’ MacFadyen said. “It’s just sort of a conceptual drawing and now it’s going to the main user groups of the facility to take a look and get their input.’’
The centre, located at 29 Cornwall Rd., is also home to the town’s curling club, which is about 28 years old.

Neima and Taylor teams go undefeated in final round of Wed. Ladder League

The Wednesday evening Ladder League wrapped up another successful season last week, with two teams, skipped by Paul Neima in the A Pool, and Jeff Taylor in the B section, going undefeated in the final round (we thought we had the Taylor team the last night, but we missed our final shot!).  These  teams be getting prizes at the end of the year, along with A pool runner-up in the final round, the Bob Fowler foursome, with one loss.

The Bob MacWilliams team, winner of round one, and runner-up in round two, had three losses in the final round, behind the Angus Kennedy team, with two. The Hank Kamphuis rink were runners-up in the B pool, with just one loss.

Here are the prize winners for all three rounds:

Round One

A Pool Winners: Bob MacWilliams, John Berry, Roy Coffin, Jim Farquharson
A Pool Runners-Up: John DeLuca, Cindy Nicholson, Peter Buchanan, Danielle Girard

Round Two

A Pool Winner:  Bob Fowler,  Paul Durant, Jamie Ballem, Allan Acorn
A Pool Runner-Up:  Bob MacWilliams, John Berry, Roy Coffin, Jim Farquharson

Round Three

A Pool Winner:  Paul Neima, Angus Davies, Mike Lafontaine, Rob Young
A Pool Runner-up:  Bob Fowler,  Paul Durant, Jamie Ballem, Allan Acorn
B Pool Winner: Jeff Taylor, Alex Sutherland, Alex Jenkins, Jonathan Schut

By popular demand, we will be making a change next year, with both the A and B winners in each round taking home prizes, along with the A pool runner-up in the final round. This will be the same number of prizes this year, but will provide more incentive in the B pool.

Thanks to our prize sponsors:

Round One: Murphy’s Cornwall Pharmacy (1st place A pool), Howard Johnson Dutch Inn (2nd place A pool)
Round Two:  Cornwall Pizza Delight (1st and 2nd place A pool)
Round Three:  A Pool Winners- Don Lowther Snow Removal
A Pool Runners-Up  Clyde River Golf Links

Red rules as Countryview Closing Spiel wraps up Cornwall Curling Season

The red teams continued to be red hot on Saturday, winning the Countryview Golf Closing Spiel by the widest margin ever – a score of 153 to 118 points over their blue opponents, and gaining control of the prize table. Even the reverse draw for a free membership next year was won by a Red – Tom Dunn!  Blue has a whole year to rebuild, though, and will be looking for revenge next year!

Off the ice, Saturday activities included some serious foosball play,  burgers on the barbie with potato salad, and some great live music in the afternoon by Nathan Condon and Mike Johnston. Following the last round of curling, a fantastic meal consisting of roast pork loin, home made baked beans, baked potatoes with all the trimmings, and dessert of ice cream and cookies was enjoyed by everyone.

Check out the slideshow for day two photos:

Following the meal, and the trip to the prize table for the Reds (and some door prizes, too), organizers Barb and Ray Biagé thanked everyone who participated, and everyone who helped out at the event, along with our great sponsors Carl and Karen Currie from Countryview Golf course. Don’t forget, Countryview opened for the season yesterday, so head on out to route 19 in Fairview, and check out their Masters specials this weekend, with 25 to 50 percent off all in-stock merchandise. Call 675-2800 or email proshop@countryviewgolf.com to reserve a tee-time, and visit CountryviewGolf.com  to check out their great annual membership rates, starting at only $260 for one specified weekday (Mon-Fri) , plus taxes and applicable PEIGA fees.

Barb  also mentioned the upcoming benefit for Paul Horne on the 30th at the North Shore Community Centre. Scott Jeffrey (PEIDJ.com), who played the music for us on Friday night, is donating his services for that event, and Barb passed the hat to help him with expense money. Paul is out of the hospital, and doing well, following his heart incident at the Club in January, and is expected to eventually recover fully. However, expenses are being incurred for home adaptations, and out-of-province travel. If you are interested in donating an item for the Silent Auction or have any questions, please contact Steve or Teresa Horne @ 892-8896 or horne@eastlink.ca.  Barb urged everyone to attend the benefit, and “bring your cheque book”!

President John DeLuca wrapped up the event by thanking Barb and Ray and all their assistants, along with the attendees, sponsors, club staff, and entertainers for the great event, and thanked everyone for a very successful season at the Club. He also mentioned that Club renovations are still happening, and that the Town of Cornwall is supposed to have concept drawings available in the next week or so.

He also talked about the need for upwards of 200 volunteers for The Dominion National Curling Championship, happening Nov. 23-28 at the Charlottetown and Cornwall clubs, and made volunteer application forms available. Online volunteer registration is not working yet (I’ll let you know when they have it working), but you can also contact Kate Arkilander at The Dominion, email karkilander@thedominion.ca if you can help out in any way.

Thanks again for a great event and a great season! The juniors take to the ice today for their closing skating and curling event, with the ice plant shutting down later today. See you all at the Paul Horne Benefit on the 30th, the Awards Night and Annual General Meeting in early May (more on this later), and the annual 9-hole best-ball golf tournament at Countryview on June 19th (get in touch with Carl at Countryview, or Bob Fowler, to sign up).

Reds hot, hot, hot as Countryview Closing Spiel goes tropical!

It was a great day to be Red, following Friday play at the Cornwall Curling Club's Countryview Golf Closing Bonspiel. The opening draw saw two sheets in play, with Red winning one game and losing the other, to end up in a dead heat. It was also close after the second draw, but, by the end of the third round, Red had a firm hold on the lead, with a 49-41 score. Blue isn't ready to concede yet, however, and with today's draws getting underway at 9 am, with the last draw at 4, anything can happen (and usually does!).

Last night's activities took on a tropical theme, with the club decorated to the 9's with palm trees, hula girls, sombreros, a swimming pool, and just about every tropical cliché one could dream up! An authentic tropical meal of tacos and ice cream was served, and Scott Jeffrey of Moovin' and Groovin' (peidj.com)kept everybody dancing to the tropical tunes well into the night. A nice jacket from Countryview Golf(who, by the way, are opening today) and a bag big enough to hold a person were among the door prizes given out at the dance. Enough talking -- check out the slide show and see for yourself what fun we can have!

There's some live music in store on Saturday afternoon, and the barbecue will see action at noon as the fun and food continues on Saturday. Things will wind up with a dinner and awards ceremony with prizes for the winning colour. See you at the Club!

In stick curling there are two curlers per team, who deliver their rocks with delivery sticks, with each team member delivering from opposite ends. Sweeping is allowed only from the hog line to the back of the house at the playing end. Two curlers, one from each team, alternately deliver 6 stones each per end, while their teammate skips that end. The roles are then reversed, and the partners deliver the stones back. All games are six ends.

Next year’s Maritime Stick championship will be in New Brunswick.

This year’s event was run under the auspices of Stick Curl PEI, who would like to thank sponsors Ferguson Funeral Homes, Bob’s Stick, and Harold Brister, for their support to this event.

Men’s playoff round set, Lank/Walsh lead Ladies at Maritime Stick

Nova Scotia rinks finished in first place in both round robin pools at the Ferguson Funeral Homes Maritime Stick Curling Championship, which wraps up Thursday afternoon at the Cornwall Curling Club.  Three teams finished at 3-2 records in the first pool, with the Ted Lohnes/Ron Crowe duo from Nova Scotia grabbing first place after points were compared, followed by the Wayne Gorman/Ray Shillington twosome, also from NS. The New Brunswick rink of Ken Grattan and Al Gauvreau finished third. The other three teams in the pool, all from PEI, had 2-3 win-loss records.

In the second pool, the Nova Scotia team of Vince Clark and Kerry Gardner were first, with a 4-1 win-loss tally. Two PEI rinks, the Grant Laird/Vern Chowan duo from the host club, who were awarded second place, and the third place Bob Leard/Barry MacDonald team, were 3-2. Two teams went 2-3, with one at 1-4.

At 10 am Thursday, the second place team from one pool will play the third place team from the other, with Gorman/Shillington facing Leard/MacDonald, and Grattan/Gauvreau playing Laird/Chowan. The winners will then take on first place teams Lohnes/Crowe and Clark/Gardiner at 12 noon, with the winners of those two games playing in the 2 pm final, and the losers going to the consolation game at the same time.

With one round robin draw remaining, Thursday at noon,  in the four team women’s section, with all teams coming from PEI, the rink of Shirley Lank and Ruth Walsh from the Cornwall and Crapaud clubs have sewn up first place with a 4-1 win-loss record.  The other three teams are at 2-3. Maritime Stick Ch’ship starts this morning

Many of the best stick curlers in the three Maritime provinces will  be here at the Cornwall Curling Club Tuesday March 16 through Thursday the 18th for the second annual Maritime Stick Curling Championships, sponsored by Ferguson Funeral Homes. There are two men’s pools, with four Nova Scotia teams, one New Brunswick rink, and seven PEI duos. For the first time there is also a women’s pool, with all the women’s teams coming from PEI for this year. Defending men’s champions are the rink of Vince Clark and Lorne Breckon from the Truro Curling Club. Clark is back this year, with teammate Kerry Gardner.

Teams will play a round robin format, with the top three teams from each pool advancing to the men’s and women’s playoff round. Round robin draws are Tuesday and Wednesday at 10 and 11:15 am, and 12:45, 2 and 3:30 pm. The quarter-finals go Thursday at 10 am, with the semis at noon, and the women’s and men’s championships, and men’s consolation game Thursday at 2.

The Veronica Smith rink from the Cornwall Curling Club, which includes 3rd Katie Fullerton, 2nd Sabrina Smith, and lead Chloe McCloskey, with coaches Paul Smith and Sarah Fullerton, beat the Caroline Rose team from Montague by a 7-2 score this afternoon to win the girls division of the M&M Meat Shops Provincial Curling Championships, at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton. Other members of the runner-up Rose team are Sarah MacPhee, Jessica Chapman, and Leah Deveau, with coach Carolyn MacPhee.

Rose beat Fallon Arsenault of Summerside 14-1 in the final round robin draw this morning, while Smith defeated Emily Keen of Charlottetown 11-2. The Jenny McLean team from Summerside, who were tied with Smith and Rose at 3-1 going into the last round robin draw, lost 8-1 to Emma Cousins of the Maple Leaf.

Meanwhile, the combined Charlottetown/Maple Leaf rink of Kyle Hughes, Matthew MacLean, Marshall Smallman, and Jonathan Schut, with coach Shannon Smallman, beat the Alex Matters foursome from Charlottetown by a 7-2 score Saturday evening to win the boys division. MacLean and Smallman, from the Maple Leaf club in O’Leary, were on last year’s winning team, and also won the 17 and Under this year. As the rules permit no more than two players from a team winning a higher age division to be on one team, MacLean and Smallman teamed up with Charlottetown’s Hughes and Schut. Other members of the runner-up Alex Matters rink are Chris Gallant, Kyle Holland, and Andrew Cameron, with coaches Peter Gallant and Derrick Cameron. The third team entered in the boys section, skipped by Brandon MacNevin of the Silver Fox, did not manage to pick up a win in double round robin play, while Hughes and Matters both finished at 4-1, with Matters beating Hughes 7-5 in their first round robin encounter, and Hughes doubling Matters 4-2 in their second game.
