PEI teams out in consolation round, O’Leary’s Emily Gray and Youth Olympics team win consolation round at OVCA SuperSpiel

(PEICA) The Sunday afternoon finals of the annual JSI OVCA Junior SuperSpiel in Ottawa were won by Scotland’s Hannah Fleming, 8-5 over Lynn Kreviazuk of Ontario, and Northern Ontario’s Brennan Wark, 8-6 over Stuart Thompson of Nova Scotia. PEI’s Sam Ramsay and Sarah Fullerton rinks, and the Halifax team skipped by PEI native Anita Casey all lost out in the consolation finals, with Casey losing 7-5  to Jeffrey Stewart pf Quebec, Ramsay falling 8-1 to Evie Fortier of Ontario, and Cornwall’s Fullerton losing 8-4 to the eventual consolation round winners, Canada’s Youth Olympics team, with O’Leary’s Emily Gray at lead. Note that men’s and women’s teams compete in the consolation round. The Youth Olympics team was the only mixed entry in the event. The Canadian Curling Association has more on the Youth Olympics Team consolation round win:

Youth Olympics Team wins Consolation Event at JSI OVCA Junior Superspiel (CCA)

After getting off to a slow start, Canada’s Youth Olympics curling team rattled off four straight wins to capture the Consolation Event at the John Shea Insurance OVCA Junior Superspiel in Ottawa this weekend.

The team, consisting of skip Thomas Scoffin of Whitehorse, third Corryn Brown of Kamloops BC, second Derek Oryniak of Winnipeg MB, and lead Emily Gray of O’Leary PEI, fought back from three losses on the first day of competition and battled their way through the consolation round.

The Youth Olympians notched up two wins on Saturday and another on Sunday morning against a tough Ottawa Curling Club team skipped by Melissa Gannon.

The teams exchanged single points and steals until an extra end, when Scoffin made an out-turn hit and stick for the point to win – sending Team Canada into the semi-finals.

In a rematch against Lyon-Hatcher (they battled in the second game of the event), Team Canada blanked one and scored their deuce in the second.

“It was a great game,” reports coach Helen Radford. “Both teams played well and the opposition made some nice run-backs.”

In a scary fourth end, skip Scoffin made a triple take-out followed by a perfect draw to score one point and save the end. A solid deuce in the sixth forced Lyon-Hatcher to blank the seventh. Team Canada took control, defending the eighth and running their opponents out of rocks for the 5-3 win.

In the final against Huntley’s Evie Fortier, Team Canada blanked the first, then traded singles until the fifth, where they scored a big three points to take a 5-2 lead into six.

Fortier battled back, but Team Canada was ready for them, snatching the win with a steal in eight, and another steal in the extra end.

Coach Helen Radford was proud of her young foursome. Scoffin, Brown, Oryniak and Gray were selected for Team Canada last March and have been training on and off the ice with Radford and other high-performance coaches in preparation for the 2012 Youth Olympic Games to be held in Innsbruck, Austria, this February. The JSI OVCA Junior Superspiel gave them their first opportunity to play in a competitive event against very accomplished teams.

“After starting the weekend at 0-3, the team gained momentum and rattled off four wins in a row,” she said. ”The team showed a lot of determination and worked really well together all weekend.”

Birt and Butler out in semis, but go home with over $1200 each at Rodd Classic

The Atlantic Curling Tour’s 10th anniversary Rodd Hotels and Resorts Curling Classic wrapped up this afternoon at the Charlottetown Curling Club, with two New Brunswick rinks, skipped by Mike Kennedy and Melissa Adams, going home with the $5000 men’s and $3000 women’s championship prizes, respectively. Kennedy was trailing 6-5 coming home with hammer in his final game against PEI’s Mike Gaudet foursome, and picked up a triple in the final end for an 8-6 win. Gaudet goes home with $3000 for his runner-up finish. Other members of the Kennedy rink are Chris Jeffrey, Scot Fox, and Dave Konefal. Tyler MacKenzie, Tyler Harris, and Sean Clarey round out the Gaudet foursome.

Adams was behind 4-1 after four ends in her game against Moncton’s Sylvie Robichaud, but rebounded quickly, keeping Robichaud off the scoreboard in the second half, taking two singles, a deuce, and another single to win 6-4. Robichaud, who is off to the Canadian Mixed next weekend, pocketed $2000 for her second place finish. The women’s rinks also received a $40 per win payout in the event. Rounding out Adams’ team are Jaclyn Crandall, Shannon Williams, and Emily MacRae. Robichaud’s team includes Danielle Nicholson,  Marie Richard,  Kendra Dickison, and fifth Denise Nowlan, with coach Ellery Robichaud. Note: all team rosters are unconfirmed – rosters were not provided for the event.

Kennedy beat PEI’s Brett Gallant rink by a 7-4 score in the quarter-finals, while Gaudet got by defending event champion Robert Campbell, from the host club, 4-3. Gaudet knocked out previously-unbeated Chad Stevens of Nova Scotia 4-3 in the semi-finals, while Kennedy blanked PEI’s Rob MacDonald foursome 7-0. Stevens and MacDonald pocket $1500 each, while Gallant and Campbell each go home with a grand.

Robichaud edged out PEI women’s champ Suzanne Birt 4-3 in an extra end in the semis, after Birt, who was runner-up in the women’s section last year, had tied the game with a triple in the eighth. In the other semi, Adams beat Cornwall’s Donna Butler foursome 7-4. Birt and Butler each go home with $1200, plus a $40 payout per win. Birt and Butler were both in Cornwall’s Tuesday night competititve league last season.

Round robin play wrapped up Saturday night, with the Birt rink finishing in first place in the 12 team women’s division with a perfect 5-0 win-loss record. Nova Scotia’s Stevens rink were undefeated on the 15 team men’s side, at 4-0, after handing PEI’s Brett Gallant foursome their first loss on Saturday evening, by a 6-1 score. Stevens put the game out of reach early with a stolen triple in the third end. Birt blanked Newfoundland/Labrador’s Heather Strong rink 7-0 in her last round robin game, grabbing a 5-0 lead after two ends, with a triple and a deuce. The  Butler team finished second in the women’s division, with a 4-1 win-loss record, their only loss being to Coralie Richard of NS on Friday.

Kennedy, and the four island men’s rinks, skipped by Gallant, Gaudet, Campbell and  MacDonald, all finished the round robin with 3-1 records.

Butler, Birt among championship round contenders at Rodd Curling Classic

The Atlantic Curling Tour’s 10th anniversary Rodd Hotels and Resorts Curling Classic concludes today at the Charlottetown Curling Club, with Island rinks making up six of the 10 teams who have advanced to the championship round. The Suzanne Birt and Donna Butler rinks, who curled in our Tuesday night competitive league last season, are among those teams.

Round robin play wrapped up Saturday night, with the Birt rink finishing in first place in the 12 team women’s division with a perfect 5-0 win-loss record. Nova Scotia’s Chad Stevens rink were undefeated on the 15 team men’s side, at 4-0, after handing PEI’s Brett Gallant foursome their first loss on Saturday evening, by a 6-1 score. Stevens put the game out of reach early with a stolen triple in the third end. Birt blanked Newfoundland/Labrador’s Heather Strong rink 7-0 in her last round robin game, grabbing a 5-0 lead after two ends, with a triple and a deuce. Cornwall’s Butler team finished second in the women’s division, with a 4-1 win-loss record, their only loss being to Coralie Richard of NS on Friday.

New Brunswick’s Mike Kennedy, and four island men’s rinks, skipped by Gallant, Mike Gaudet, Robert Campbell and Rod MacDonald, all finished with 3-1 records. Campbell faces Gaudet, while Kennedy takes on Gallant in the 9 am Sunday quarter-finals, with the winner of the Kennedy/Gallant game taking on MacDonald, and the Gaudet/Campbell victor battling Stevens, in the noon semis.

The women’s noon semi-final matchups see the Islanders play New Brunswick teams, with Birt taking on Lady Monctonian winner Sylvie Robichaud, who finished round robin play at 3-2, and Butler facing Melissa Adams, also 3-2.

The men’s and women’s finals go at 3 pm.

Cornwall’s Fullerton rink lose in consolation round to O’Leary’s Emily Gray and Canada’s Youth Olympics team at Ottawa SuperSpiel

(CCA) Canada’s Youth Olympics curling team came out swinging in their second day of competition at the John Shea Insurance OVCA Junior Superspiel taking place in Ottawa, Ontario, November 4-6.

Youth Olympics Team skip Thomas Scoffin watches the line as sweepers (left) Derek Oryniak and (right) Emily Gray go to work. (Photo Brennan Schnell)

Junior curlers Thomas Scoffin, Corryn Brown, Derek Oryniak and Emily Gray, playing in their first competitive event since being named to Team Canada last April, emerged from day one with three losses after three close games.

Coach Helen Radford says that the team – still new to each other in a game situation – continues to improve and develop.

“Team chemistry has been excellent,” she says, “and they are really starting to work together.”

Today, a determined Team Canada hit the ice at Carleton Heights against P.E.I.’s Team Fullerton, scoring one in the first end and a big three in the fourth to take a one-point lead into the second half.

Relying on good draw weight and the excellent sweeping of front end Oryniak and Gray, Team Canada held Fullerton to one in the fifth, took two in six and stole another two in seven, earning an 8-4 victory – and a match Sunday morning at 9 a.m. against Navy’s Team Gannon at Carleton Heights.

Click for full story at the CCA website.

(PEICA) PEI’s Sam Ramsay rink, which includes Matthew Nabuurs, Connor MacPhee, and Shawn Pitre, with coach Rob Robert, is still in the event, in the consolation round, where they play the Jennifer Armstrong rink from New Brunswick (the consolation round has both men’s and women’s rinks) at 10 am PEI time on Sunday, with the loser being eliminated from further play.

The Fullerton foursome were eliminated with their 8-4 consolation round loss to the Youth Olympics team on Saturday afternoon.

Seven Mile Bay’s Anita Casey, now living in Halifax, and skipping a Mayflower Curling Club team, was also eliminated in that consolation round draw, when the Jeffrey Stewart team from Valleyfield Quebec stole a deuce in the final end for a 7-5 win.

Teams qualifying for the championship round are (men) Brennan Wark of Northern Ontario and (women) Lynn Kreviazuk from Ontario out of the A side of the triple knockout, along with Stuart Thompson of Nova Scotia (men) and Hannah Fleming from Scotland (women) out of the B side. The C-event qualifiers (two men’s and two women’s teams) will be decided with the 10 am AST draw on Sunday.

The semis go at 1 pm PEI time, with the finals at 5.

Wark beat Kreviazuk $275 to $225 in Saturday afternoon’s Battle of the Sexes skins event.

We are pleased to announce that the 2011-2012 Cornwall Curling Club curling season will begin on Wednesday, November 9th, starting with the 10 am daytime curling draw, and continuing with the Wednesday evening Ladder League.  Although the clubhouse will not be completely finished, our insurance company has checked things out and given  the go-ahead.  Washrooms will, of course, be available, but the bar will not be open until further notice.  The “normal” curling club entrance at the East end will be used, with new sidewalks in place,  as the area with the new entrance is not yet finished. Thank you for your patience to-date, please bear with us during the final phases of clubhouse construction, and Good Curling!

The Dominion Team of the Week: Guess who!

(from The Dominion Curling Club Championship Facebook page)

The Women’s Prince Edward Island Team (Team Davies) for The Dominion Curling Club Championship [November 21-26 in Richmond BC] hails from the Cornwall Curling Club in Cornwall, P.E.I. It consists of Lorianne Davies, Skip; Melody Beck, Vice; Tracy MacDonald, Second; and Lynda Turnbull, Lead.

The four friends formed a team two years ago with the intention of having fun together both on and off the ice. Team Davies not only enjoyed each others’ company, but also found almost instant success as competitors. The team came incredibly close to playing in the 2010 Championship, but was defeated in last year’s provincial final. In 2011, the ladies came back with the goal of winning the Provincial Playdowns – and they did!

Not only have the four women won two club championships, but Lynda (Lead) and Lorianne (Skip) are three-time Cornwall Curling Club champions with back-to-back wins starting in 2009.

Before each match, the women have a pre-game powwow where they bump fists and say to each other “good game, girls”.

Individually, the team members are involved with a number of community organizations ranging from coaching curling, to local community theatre, environmental groups, chairing the board of a national historic site and helping out with the P.E.I. Special Olympics.

Last year, the whole team saw The Dominion Curling Club Championships from the volunteer side of the glass when the tournament was held in Charlottetown. They are eager to participate as players this year.

Team Davies is most looking forward to walking out on the ice at the opening ceremonies holding their P.E.I. flag and wearing the provincial jackets – a dream they thought might never come true.

“Before The Dominion Curling Club Championship was created, playing at a national was a dream we did not expect to realize.”

Best of luck to the Women’s Price Edward Island team at the

2011 The Dominion Curling Club Championship!

The Dominion will feature a championship team every week from now until the championship. Get to know your Canadian curling champions and their journey to the 2011 The Dominion Curling Club Championships!

Curling soon!

Dust off the brooms…game time will soon be here!  While we won’t be on the ice before the trick -or – treaters come knocking, we are getting closer every day!  Thanks to our dedicated icemaker, the ice is almost complete and the rings will be painted shortly.  Our official back-to-curling date has not been set in stone as we are still waiting for our insurance company to make final recommendations and to give us their approval to use the club for curling.  Our first few weeks back will be with a limited clubhouse as final touches are finished up, but it will be worth it to have ice under our feet again! Check CornwallCurling.com regularly for more updates on the progress at the clubhouse and information about our first official day of curling!

Caution – slippery surfaces!

The temporary door may be made of chipboard, the windows may be plastic sheeting, and we may be a little behind schedule, but the first flood has been done and our brand-new  state-of-the-art Berg Chilling Systems (click the link for info on how ice plants work)  ice plant, installed with the help of Lowther Refrigeration, is busy making state-of-the art ice! We’ll let you know when you can throw rocks at our houses – let’s hope this new machine makes fast ice, and makes it quickly!

Renovated Cornwall Curling Club taking shape (Guardian)

From today’s Guardian, page A3

GUARDIAN PHOTO
Bob MacWilliams, left, and club president Jamie Ballem check out the progress of renovations Thursday at the Cornwall Curling Club. The club has undergone a complete renovation from top to bottom over the summer and Ballem says curlers can expect to be on the ice by the week of Oct. 24, about a week later than usual. The new ice plant arrives next week and ice-making will start mid-October.

Post last modified: [last-modified]

Welcome, from the President!

Dear Members and Prospective Members:

Welcome to another curling season at our Cornwall Curling Club! On behalf of the Board of Directors I want to wish everyone a great year of curling and fun at our club.

This is going to be a very exciting year for us all as we move into our new club after construction is completed.

On that note there have been many rumours and much speculation about when the Club will reopen. A number of us met at the Club with the contractor and were briefed on the progress being made.  After a very slow start because of weather the construction is going well.

We do have some tentative dates for things to happen — our new ice plant is to arrive before the end of Sept. and will take about 10 days to install. This should allow Lance to start making ice about Oct 10. It usually takes 10-14 days to make ice so we are proposing a start date for curling the week of Oct 24th.  Last year we started league curling on the 17th so we are not far behind.  I want to point out these are the tentative dates. The club will not be completely finished at that time but we will have ice and keen curlers so we should be good to go. You will be provided with more updates on the website and email as we soon as we know.

We will be having registration for returning members on Wed Oct 12 at the Cornwall Town hall starting at 6:30 PM. We may not have access to credit card and Interac there so we ask that you please be prepared to pay with cash or cheque.

On Oct 19th we will have registration for new members and junior curlers again,  at the Cornwall Town Hall.

You will note there is a new schedule for memberships. We have separated the fees for our membership and those we collect for PEICA and CCA. The total cost for you will increase about $5 per person and this is all because of PEICA and CCA fee increases. Our membership has not changed.

On the curling side we will be hosting the Atlantic University Championships in January and will have the Provincial Men’s Tankard as well. There will be the usual club spiels and fun events.

As always this Club’s success is based on the members and volunteers who help out.  If you have any ideas to make things better please tell a board member and do not be afraid to lend a hand. We need you all.

Have a great year curling and remember to have fun!!

Jamie Ballem,  President.

Upcoming season – sneak peek

There will be more over the next week or two,  but here’s a sneak peek at what is happening at the Cornwall Curling Club for the upcoming season:

Clubhouse construction is continuing, and curling will commence without the clubhouse being completely finished, which will not happen until the Town takes possession of the new building on Nov. 26.

Returning members registration night:  Oct. 12, new members registration Oct. 19.  Locations to be determined.

Membership fees to be same as last year, except for a $5 increase to cover additional fees from the CCA and PEICA.

New junior coordinators and junior program volunteers will be required this year.  Looking at holding Little Rocks and Novice on Sunday afternoons from 1-3, with older Juniors playing on Thursday afternoon.

Major events:  this season we are hosting the Atlantic University Curling Championship January 13-15,  and the Labatt Tankard Provincial Men’s Curling Championship January 26-31. Clubhouse Construction Continues

Work is continuing on our new clubhouse. Here’s a photo from today:

After some initial delays to ensure that the new Cornwall Civic Centre was on a firm foundation, the outer shell is almost complete.  Recent reports  have things still on track to have the ice available sometime in October.

Cornwall’s Davies rink to represent PEI at The Dominion in BC in November

The Dominion Curling Club Championship is an annual event for men’s and women’s curling teams from all ten provinces and three territories, plus a separate entry from Northern Ontario, who have won their respective local club championships. Provincial/territorial champions advance to the Canadian Championship, which will take place this year from November 21-26. Last year’s event was held in Charlottetown and Cornwall PEI.

All funds made during the championship will be redirected to the Canadian Paraplegic Association (CPA) of BC. Last year, $30,000 was raised for CPA PEI.

The island will be represented at this year’s national championship by the Lorianne Davies rink from the Cornwall Curling Club, and the Donald Clarey team from Montague.

Adam McQuaid/Stanley Cup parade and festival day a big success!

Adam McQuaid

It was a great afternoon to be in Cornwall, with a huge crowd on hand for the big parade with Cornwall’s own Adam McQuaid and the Stanley Cup, followed by a festival on the APM Centre grounds. The event was organized to a “T”, and the rain held off until the festivities were almost over! Judging by the crowds, a lot of money was raised for groups and charities such as KidSport, Children’s Wish, North River minor hockey, Mikinduri Children of Hope, and Cornwall area schools breakfast programs!

In case you missed the fun, here are some pictures I took. We didn’t manage to win a photo with the Cup, so other (lucky) families are pictured instead.

Adam McQuaid Stanley Cup Festival today in Cornwall

As I am sure everyone knows, Adam McQuaid is bringing the Stanley Cup to Cornwall, PEI today (Sunday, August 28th). The details for the event are outlined below:

STANLEY CUP PARADE

The Parade route will begin at the Cornwall Esso on the Trans Canada Highway (TCH) at 1:00 PM, travel east to the traffic lights at the corner of the TCH and John Street, south on John Street and then East on Lowther Drive to the Town of Cornwall/APM Centre which will be the site of most of the planned festivities. Approximately one hour has been scheduled for the parade. Adam McQuaid and the Stanley Cup will then be on to the Town of Cornwall/APM site for approximately two hours from 2:00-4:00 PM.

STANLEY CUP FESTIVAL AT TOWN OF CORNWALL & APM CENTER GROUNDS

The other main public function could best be described as a Community Celebration where people will have the opportunity to pay tribute to Adam and the Stanley Cup. There will be games and activities on site for families to enjoy the experience and there will be entertainment on the special stage that will be set up. Kickin Country will play, along with Jacqueline & Alexia McQuaid, and a special band featuring lead singer Liam Corcoran of Two Hours Traffic will also be entertaining the guests on site.

A  number of lucky fans will be selected to have their family photo taken with Adam and the Stanley Cup. In the past, for an event of this nature, people had to decide whether to attend the parade, or to wait in a long lineup for a chance to possibly see the Cup. Organizers didn’t want people to have to do this…they want people to experience the whole event..With Adam’s Stanley Cup Festival, fans will have the chance to watch the parade and attend the community celebration, and some lucky fans will get their chance to meet Adam on stage and get their photo taken with Adam and the Cup!

ON-SITE CONTEST

After enjoying the Parade, fans are invited to attend the Stanley Cup Festival activities that will be taking place on the grounds of the Town of Cornwall/APM Centre. Each and every fan who attends the festival will be given a ballot for a chance to have their photo taken with Adam and the Stanley Cup. Upon arriving at the Town of Cornwall/APM Centre Grounds, fans will be able to visit one of two tent ballot stations to get their ballots. These tents will be prominently located on site. Winners will be announced throughout the day at the event for this truly unique opportunity! Between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM, they will coordinate as many photos as possible throughout the day! At the very end of the day, as a very special opportunity, fans will have the chance to win one of 54 special Adam McQuaid autographed t-shirts which will be drawn very close to 4:00 PM.

ROAD CLOSURES/DETOURS

Road Closures/Detours will be in place on the Trans Canada Highway (TCH) from 11:00 AM thru 3:00 PM to accommodate the Parade and to ensure the safety of visitors to the festival. One Traffic detour will be at the North River Rink and TCH (North on Warren Grove/Cornwall Road, South on York Point/Ferry Road) and another detour at the TCH/Ferry Road. Vehicle traffic will be restricted on some streets commencing at approximately 10:00 AM.

PARKING & SHUTTLES

The Parking Plan is to utilize two farm fields, both adjacent to the Trans Canada Highway (TCH), on both the east and west sides of the Community.

Both fields are approximately two Kilometres from the APM Centre. The East Field is located on the North side of the TCH across from the Dutch Inn. The West Field is located on the North side of the TCH across the road from the Terry Fox Complex.

Buses will be utilized to transport patrons to/from the APM site. Busing will commence at 9:00 AM making round trips until approximately ten minutes before the Parade is scheduled to commence at 1:00 PM. Buses will be available at APM throughout the event to transport early departees back to either the East or West Parking Lots. All buses will be available after 3:30 PM. Each bus will be identified as traveling to either the East or West parking lots.

HANDICAPPED PARKING

Vehicles carrying handicapped persons will be allowed to follow the bus routes into the APM site, drop off their passengers and then park in a designated area.

NO PARKING AREAS – SPECIAL NOTICE

Due to the expected large crowd and the increase in vehicle traffic attending this event, the Police and Highway Safety will be enforcing the parking regulations and/or having vehicles towed that are either parking in prohibited areas, are hindering/obstructing traffic or are a Public Safety concern. It is strongly recommended that the Public utilize the Parking fields and bus services provided by the Organizing Committee.

No Parking Signs will be installed prior to Saturday the 27th on:

A. On TCH and York Pt Rd near Flea market

B. On TCH both sides between Lorrie Drive and Ferry Rd

C. At both entrances to Parking lots (100m each way)

D. On Cornwall Rd both sides from TCH to Centennial

E. On Lowther Drive both sides from John St to APM back entrance

F. On Ferry Road both sides from TCH to beyond Community Centre

Event Benefactors

Adam also understands that it is extremely important to give back to the community of Prince Edward Island. For this very special event, Adam has selected a few charities and non-profit groups that will benefit from this event.

  • Special souvenir t-shirts will be available on site with all proceeds going to the KidSport Fund of PEI. These t-shirts will be available at Mark’s Work Wearhouse starting on Monday, August 22.
  • A raffle will be taking place for some Adam McQuaid memorabilia with all proceeds going to Children’s Wish Foundation of PEI.
  • North River Minor Hockey Association will be selling pop and water on site in support of their minor hockey programs.
  • St. Francis of Assisi Church will be providing some fantastic food options on site in support of Mikinduri Children of Hope.
  • A 50-50 draw will be held on site in support of the Breakfast Programs at Westwood Primary, Eliot River and East Wiltshire Schools.

People are reminded that there is no charge to attend the event. For the latest info, check out the Facebook page  by searching Adam McQuaid Stanley Cup Festival.

Renovations to Cornwall Civic Centre commence thanks to support from Federal and Provincial Governments (PEI Gov’t)

Ronnie and Barney onsite

Photo: Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Ron MacKinley and Cornwall Mayor Glen “Barney” Fullerton go over plans for the new Cornwall Civic Centre

CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI — The Town of Cornwall has begun construction of its new Cornwall Civic Centre thanks to investments made by the federal and provincial governments. The original facility was demolished this past June and will now be replaced with a 16,000 square foot, two-level facility.

“Our Government is pleased to support initiatives that enhance infrastructure and develop communities,” said Senator Mike Duffy. “Investments in projects like the Cornwall Civic Center generate employment during their construction phase and create valuable community infrastructure that families and local residents will benefit from for years to come. From swimming classes and curling to community meeting space this facility will add to the quality of life that the people of Cornwall enjoy.”

The additions being made to the Cornwall Civic Centre will complement the existing curling rink and adjacent outdoor swimming pool. The new building will focus on accessibility, sustainability and affordability for various age groups in the community.

“The construction of a new Cornwall Civic Centre shows our government is committed to improving the lives of residents from one end of the Island to the other,” said Prince Edward Island Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Ron MacKinley. “The civic centre is a community hub, and by making the new building accessible, affordable and sustainable we make it a facility everyone can enjoy.”

The Government of Canada, under the Building Canada Fund, the Government of Prince Edward Island, under Build PEI, and the Town of Cornwall made a combined investment of $2 million in these infrastructure improvements.

“The Town of Cornwall is pleased to partner with the Federal and Provincial Governments in this significant upgrade to the Cornwall Civic Centre,” notes Cornwall Mayor Glen ‘Barney’ Fullerton. “This investment ensures the Centre’s valuable contribution to the social fabric of the Town, being home to the Curling Club, Lions Club, 50 plus Club and many recreational programs/events.”

The Cornwall Curling Club recently underwent an upgrade to the curling rink, which included repairs to the roof and an overhaul of the ice plant. This was made possible through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program and the Island Community Fund. With the modernization of the civic centre in addition to the curling rink upgrades, the Cornwall Civic Centre is a strategic investment that will enhance the quality of life for local residents.

Clubhouse reconstruction should start Monday

Sources tell me that construction should get underway on Monday for the reconstruction of the Cornwall Civic Centre, which houses our Clubhouse. Fitzgerald and Snow of Summerside were the successful bidder on the approximately $2 million project, with the other bidder, MacLean Construction of Charlottetown, coming in a close second. Also coming will be a brand new ice plant, housed in a separate building, as well as pool area facilities. The $128,576 contract for the new ice plant was awarded to Berg Chilling Systems of Toronto  Ont., and Cornwall’s own Lowther Refrigeration.

Club, and members Fullerton and Taylor win Joyce Myers grant and scholarships

The trustees of the Joyce Myers Trust Fund, established under Curl Atlantic from profits from the 2003 Brier and the 2005 Roar of the Rings curling events in Atlantic Canada, have announced the 2011 recipients of its Student/Athlete Scholarships and Curling Club Capital Works and Curl Atlantic Member Association Program Initiatives grants.

The 2011 Scholarship recipients ($1500 per province) are –
Prince Edward Island ($500 each): Sarah Fullerton (Cornwall Curling Club), Amanda MacLean (Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary), and Jeffrey Taylor (Cornwall Curling Club)
Nova Scotia ($500 each): Michael Brophy, Amanda Colter, and Colten Steele
Newfoundland and Labrador ($500 each): Jennifer Cunningham, Amanda Rumboldt, and Colin Thomas
New Brunswick ($750 each): Andrew O’Dell and Spencer Watts.

The 2011 Capital Grant recipients are the Caribou Curling Club (NL), Cornwall Curling Club (PE), Middleton Curling Club (NS) and the Moncton Curlers’ Association (NB). Each club will receive $1500. On PEI, the Cornwall Curling Club’s aging clubhouse building and ice plant are being completely replaced over the summer months, and the club will therefore  have many opportunities to use the grant.

The 2011 Program Initiative grant will be used to license the “Rocks and Rings” elementary school program throughout Atlantic Canada. “This joint initiative between Curl Atlantic and the Canadian Curling Association (CCA) appears to fit well with the intent of junior curling development of the Joyce Myers Trust Fund and with Curl Atlantic”, said Roy Hodder, Chair of Curl Atlantic. “The Rocks and Rings program is a great way to introduce and bring curling to the school setting. The program has received much attention during the televising of the CCA’s championship events, and is hugely popular across the country and in great demand.”

Currie, Montgomery, MacDonald team win Golf Tourney

It turned out to be a perfect day for golf on Saturday, with a combination of sun and cloud, and enough wind to keep the bugs away, as 45 members of the Cornwall Curling Club took part in their annual golf tournament at beautiful Countryview Golf Course.

The golfers also had a tenth “hole” this year, with each player getting four chances at “washer toss” with each successful toss resulting in a reduction in the teams score.

Tenders close Friday on new Civic Centre (Guardian)

Demolished Civic Centre

Photo: Cornwall is demolishing the town’s old curling club. A new one will rise on the same site.

(by Dave Stewart )
CORNWALL — One of the town’s most recognizable structures is all but a memory.

The Cornwall Civic Centre, built in the late 1960s, has been completely demolished — with the exception of the curling club’s ice surface — but it will soon begin to rise again.

The town purchased the original civic centre from the Lion’s Club in 1978.

Tenders on a new civic centre close on Friday, June 17.

So far, the town has spent $37,000 to knock the old building down and another $125,000 on a new refrigeration unit for the curling club.

Since the tender process is still ongoing, it’s impossible to say how much it will cost to build but it has $2 million available through the Build Canada fund.

“We basically knocked down and demolished an aging structure that had exhausted its useful life,’’ said Kevin McCarville, the town’s chief administrative officer.

“We’re replacing it with a modern code-compliant facility.’’

The town is on an ambitious schedule considering the intent is to have the new building up and running in time for the start of the curling season on Oct. 1.

The annual ADL/Sport PEI Sport Achievement Awards ceremony was held this evening at the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club in Summerside, in conjunction with the PEI Curling Association’s Annual General Meeting. The awards honour the achievements of PEI curlers, coaches, officials, and volunteers during the past season, in eight categories, plus a President’s Award. Silver Fox Vice President Gerald Caissy was Master of Ceremonies for the awards. Here are this year’s winners, chosen from 53 nominations:

Junior Female ~ Emily Gray and Michelle McQuaid (tie)

Junior Male ~ Christopher Gallant.

Senior Female ~ Rebecca Jean MacDonald

Senior Male ~ Robert Campbell.

Coach ~ Dick St. John

Official ~ Kay Atkinson

Volunteer ~ Kim Dolan (accepted by Rebecca Jean MacDonald)

Team ~ Robert Campbell (Mixed)

President’s Award – Bob Laird

Click to view an album of photos from the event.

Brief biographies:

Junior Female

Emily Gray, from the Maple Leaf club in O’Leary, is one of only four curlers across Canada chosen to represent Canada at the World Youth Olympics in Austria next January. She was also on thie year’s Canada Games team, playing second stone.

Cornwall’s Michelle McQuaid played third on this year’s PEI Junior Women’s team. She is a former winner of the Joan Mead Legacy award and scholarship, presented annually at the national Juniors to a curler who best exemplifies leadership, excellence and fair play. She also played third on this year’s UPEI, who finished second at the Atlantic University Curling Championships in Wolfville NS.

Junior Male

The Charlottetown Curling Club’s Christopher Gallant, the newest competitor from the Gallant curling family, threw fourth stones for the Alex Matters rink, winners of the Atlantic Under 18, and PEI 17 and Under curling championships, and skipped the PEI Junior Mixed championship team.

Senior Female

Rebecca Jean MacDonald from the Charlottetown Curling Club had an extremely busy 2010 and 2011, getting married in October, and playing third on the PEI Mixed curling team, skipped by Robert Campbell, that won the Canadian Championship in Morris Manitoba in November. In January, she competed in the PEI Scotties women’s championship, an event she has won six times as either skip or third. She played third for Kim Dolan this time, and did not win the event, but teamed up with Dolan off the ice as host commitee co-chairs of this year’s very successful Canadian Scotties, held in Charlottetown in February. In March, she again played third for Robert Campbell in the PEI Mixed championship, but they did not repeat as Island champs, losing out to former Canadian Junior champ Brett Gallant by a single point in the final In April, she and Campbell represented Canada at the World Mixed Doubles championship in St. Paul Minnesota, finishing with an overall record of 5-4 after making it to the tiebreaker round in their first-ever experience playing the mixed doubles format.

Senior Male

Robert Campbell of Charlottetown skipped his team to his second Canadian Mixed curling championship (his first was in 1989), in November. With a 79% round robin shooting average, Campbell, was named all-star skip for the event, and is only the seventh skip to win the Mixed twice. In February, he competed in the PEI Tankard, which he won eight times previously, but didn’t make the winners circle this time. Teaming up with Rebecca Jean MacDonald, he represented Canada at the World Mixed Doubles championship in St. Paul Minnesota in April, finishing with an overall record of 5-4 and making it to the tiebreaker round. Campbell and his team also competed in this year’s provincial mixed championship, but lost out to the Brett Gallant foursome by a 5-4 score in the final.

Coach

Dick St. John from the Cornwall Curling Club is a long-time Special Olympics curling coach. The PEI curling teams competed in the New Brunswick winter games in February.

Official

Charlottetown’s Kay Atkinson is head official for the PEI Curling Association, and also served as Chief Umpire for the Scotties Tournament of Hearts Canadian Women’s Curling Championship, held in Charlottetown in February. It is very rare for a local person to be selected to supervise all officials at an event like this, especially in a small market such as PEI. She was involved in this past season’s national The Dominion Curling Club Championship in Charlottetown and Cornwall, and has officiated at many events in the past, including the senior nationals, two Briers, several national juniors and the Olympic trials in Halifax.

Volunteer

Kim Dolan of Charlottetown chaired this year’s national Scotties Tournament of Hearts. She was also named chair in 1999, but had to turn things over to another volunteer, as she ended up winning the PEI championship and playing in the event, along with Rebecca Jean MacPhee (now MacDonald), who is her co-chair this time. By all reports, the 2011 Scotties was a huge success, attracting record television audiences, and packing the house for many draws, and the HeartStop Lounge as well. Dolan also has eight PEI women’s championsbips to her credit, along with being the first woman to skip a team to a PEI mixed curling title.

Team

Charlottetown’s Robert Campbell Mixed team, which included Rebecca Jean MacDonald at third, second stone Robbie Doherty, and lead Jackie Reid skipped their PEI championship rink to a Canadian championship in Morris Manitoba in November. This was Campbell’s second Canadian Mixed title, but the first for his teammates. Campbell and MacDonald also represented Canada at the World Mixed Doubles championship in St. Paul Minnesota in April, finishing with an overall record of 5-4 and making it to the tiebreaker round. The rink also competed in this year’s provincial championship, but lost out to the Brett Gallant foursome by a 5-4 score in the final.

President’s Award

Bob Laird, from the Montague Curling Club, has been involved with Stick Curling for many years, as the president of Stick Curling PEI, as a delivery stick manufacturer with his company “Bob’s Stick” and as a sponsor of stick curling, donating sticks for provincial championships and stick curling bonspiels. He is a constant ambassador of the sport, and has arranged stick curling matches across the Island in order to promote the sport.

Clubhouse renovations main topic of Cornwall Curling Club AGM

AGM attendees

The Annual General Meeting of the Cornwall Curling Club was held tonight at the Cornwall Town Hall, with 38 members and guests in attendance.  The Board of Directors reported a very profitable year, with net earnings of $23,407, due to an increase in membership, extra bar, kitchen  and other revenue  from events such as the provincial Scotties, and the national The Dominion Curling Club Championship. Over $500 was realized in the TV raffle. It was noted that it was fortunate that the Club has such a good year, as money will be required for furniture and other things for the renovated clubhouse.  Three Board members – Carol Sweetapple, Chris Montigny, and John DeLuca  have either fulfilled their term, or left for other reasons. Three new members –   Chris Currie, Angus Kennedy and Mike Lafontaine, were acclaimed, along with Seniors representative Gloria Clarke. The new club Executive will be chosen at a mid-June meeting of the new Board.

The big topic of the night  was the upcoming renovations to the Cornwall Civic Centre, which houses the Cornwall Curling Club, the 50+ Club, the Lions Club, and some Recreation Department activities. Town Administrator Kevin MacCarville was on hand to provide details and answer questions. He told those present that the original plan, of  a brand new building at the other end of the ice house, was scrapped by the new Town Council, as it would have cost $4 million, while the new plan, to renovate the existing Civic Centre, is budgeted at $2 million, with $1.2 million coming from Federal Infrastructure money, and the Town covering the rest.  He admitted that timeframes are tight, with partial demolition tender closing May 20, and construction tender to go out May 30, with an award date of June 17, ice plant startup on October 1st, and a substantial completion date for the downstairs area by October 24, and for the upstairs (not on the critical path for curling startup) by Nov, 26. A new ice plant would be part of the deliverables, would be tendered separately,  and would be housed in a separate building by the pool. The Club building committee and Executive would be contacted next week to discuss the plans and obtain further input.

A copy of the  proposed floorplan was available for viewing. More detailed plans are due on Monday. Some highlights: new main entrance on the north side with stairs and a wheelchair lift to both levels. The Cornwall Road  entrance (East side) would be eliminated, while the West entrance would remain. The floor would be lowered in the clubhouse to allow a higher ceiling downstairs and the viewing area to extend down to ice level. There would be two access doors to the ice house — at the existing location and by sheet 4, with ice access both by stairs and wheelchair ramp. Upstairs there would be a main hall with additional  ice surface viewing windows, which could be covered for non-curling events, along with a 50+ Club room and a separate area for the Lions Club. Kitchen facilities would be suitable for small events only, as the facility would not be used as a major banquet facility. No additional parking space will be provided, but the current lot will be repaved.  Kevin noted that a new rental agreement would be put in place, including finding an equitable sharing formula for electricity for  all tenants, as there would be only one electrical meter for the complex. He also noted that, following the completion of this project, work still needs to be be done, such as work on sanding and painting the steel work in the ice house. He said that the Town and the Curling Club enjoy a good working relationship, and notes that he wants to get this project done, and “move on”.

The evening concluded with the awarding of prizes for the season’s curling draw winners, donated by the Club’s very generous sponsors. Thanks to President Karen Currie and the entire Board of Directors for a great meeting and a great year!

Fixing lagoon, Civic Centre, Cornwall’s top priorities (Guardian)

(by Dave Stewart)

CORNWALL — Fixing up the lagoon and the Civic Centre are among the priorities the town is prepared to tackle this year.

The Centre, located at 29 Cornwall Road, is home to the Cornwall Curling Club as well as numerous community organizations.

The roof leaks, there are concerns about mould and mildew, the rooms are too small and the build lacks kitchen facilities.

And the curling club does not have adequate space for spectators, to host bonspiels and to hold banquets.

The town has been approved for $2 million in funding through the Build Canada Fund. Those funds are cost-shared by the federal, provincial and municipal governments. That means Cornwall’s portion of the bill would be about $666,000.

But Mayor Glen Fullerton warned that $2 million would only cover a portion of the costs whether the town proceeds with renovations or replacement.

The attached curling club would not be replaced, but simply renovated. The curling club is about 28 years old.

Also on tap for the town is a new medical facility.

The Murphy’s  Pharmacy and  Health Centre will open later this year and will include a full service pharmacy, expanded front store and a multi-disciplinary health centre.

The health centre will be built on the Trans-Canada Highway between Sam’s Restaurant and the Imperial Oil gas station.
