Irving/Sanderson rink finish first in fun and food-filled Kenmac Energy Mixed Funspiel!
The annual Kenmac Energy Mixed Funspiel, with a roster of 16 teams, took place on Friday, Jan 22nd and Saturday, Jan 23rd this year. Although there were changes made to adapt to our current COVID-19 situation, a great weekend of curling was had by all!
Sam’s Pizza
Friday, each draw was treated to pizza from Sam’s Family Restaurant and trivia by Greg Lucas following their six end game. Prizes were donated by Kenmac Energy to the two winning trivia teams: Our drinking Team has a Curling Problem and Sticks and Stones (Gill/Gallant). In addition to the regular prizes, David Fullerton won the Friday night 50/50 draw of $108.
Saturday morning started with freshly-brewed coffee, muffins, and cookies supplied by Country Style. An amazing turkey dinner lunch was provided by Sam’s Family Restaurant in Cornwall, and the best part was that it was hand-delivered by none other than Fadi Rashed himself. We are very glad to have such an amazing local business as neighbours!

We are very fortunate to have Kenmac Energy as our sponsor for this annual event. Their ongoing support and generosity are very much appreciated by all who participate! Remember Kenmac for all your home energy needs-including oil, propane, and furnace service. Thanks Kenmac for another successful spiel!
In addition, we would like to thank Fadi Rashed, and his staff at Sam’s Family Restaurant in Cornwall, for providing the amazing service, food, and being a longtime supporter of the Cornwall Curling Club. Our food was amazing and was always delivered promptly and with a smile! Everyone was impressed, well-fed, and raved about all of the yummy food!
Be sure to check out our Facebook page for lots more pictures, including on-ice action!
As with all our events, we have many people to thank for their time and energy in helping us make this spiel a success. We would like to especially thank Bryan Sutherland for creating the draw. Additional thanks to our manager for all the behind the scenes work and setup for the event. We are very grateful to Brent Irving and his helper extraordinaire, Angela Sanderson, for maintaining the ice on another very tight schedule. We would not have had half as much fun without Kelley Farrar and Al MacCormac tending the bar and helping us keep things clean and sanitized. Many thanks to Derek MacEwen for posting all of our updates and photos to the club website for this spiel, and every other event! And last, but certainly not least, we would like to send a special shoutout to everyone who stepped up to help us out in any way over the weekend — there were many of you – THANK YOU!

Jamie Ballem rink wins 2012 Kenmac Energy Opening Spiel “A” division

The same team, but with Angus Kennedy as skip instead of Jamie, also won in 2010.

Kenmac Exclusive! Santa draws to the button
We’ll get to the results of the Kenmac Opening Spiel eventually, but we just received, direct from the North Pole, some exclusive shots of Santa, who made his curling debut on the weekend, attempting, and almost executing, a draw to the button, so we thought we’d get them to you before Bruce Rainnie does!
Here’s Santa stretching after a long sleigh ride before he goes out on the ice.
Here he is, cleaning the reindeer “byproducts” from his boots before going on to the ice,
Looks like he’s better at delivering presents than rocks!

Besides the curling, events included curling trivia, solving “Wordles”, a curler bingo game where you had to get signatures from fellow curlers who had accomplished certain things during their curling careers (e.g. scored and eight ender, or bought new shoes recently), a little bit of Karaoke, and a game of Deal or No Deal, with Matt Hanus and Betty Howatt going on stage in search of the $100 prize (one of them did get $40).
Saturday lunch included meat on a bun with salad, while supper included spaghetti, and caesar salad.
While the champions were on the ice for the final draw, the rest of us took part in an auction, with Angus Davies serving as auctioneer. Monopoly money earned from our prowess in solving the trivia, bingo and puzzles, and from our lack of prowess for losing our games was bid for mystery prizes, which included candles and glassware. The bidding was fast and furious, with Bob Fowler and Nucker Richards almost coming to blows over one item. The Club president was outbid for the final item, not knowing that money was being passed under the table to the opposing bidders from the event organizers.
For all the incriminating evidence, check out our slideshow (pics from Deal or No Deal will be along later).
Thanks to all the organizers, including Rob Young and Sherri Boutelier, Bob Fowler, Angus Davies, all the kitchen helpers, the ice staff, and everyone else involved.
Thanks as usual to our long-time sponsors Gordon Matthews and Kenmac Energy, your PEI distributors of Petro Canada products, including gas, heating oil, and propane. Be warned: the double-digit temperatures we enjoyed during the bonspiel will NOT continue all winter! Contact Kenmac today, and get your furnace serviced and fueled for the upcoming heating season.
2010 Kenmac Energy Opening Bonspiel Ready to Go!
The Kenmac will begin on Friday, Nov. 12th with draws at 6:30 pm and 8:00pm. Plan to join us after your game for Deal or No Deal and a chance to win $100.00. There will be plenty of fun events for your team throughout Friday and Saturday. Check back soon for more information.

Kenmac Spiel continues after scarey evening!
The monsters, aliens, and other creatures of the night were out in full force on Friday night, as the Kenmac Energy Opening Bonspiel got underway. Here’s a photo of some of those aforementioned creatures:
Following curling action, and great food, the costume judging was held, with Frankenstein and his bride (Rob/Sheri) winning best couple, O Christmas Tree (Lorianne) winning most original costume, and Bob Marley (Joe) winning for the funniest costume.
Click for a slideshow of the evening’s shenanigans.
