Blue shows their mussels & recovers title at dynamite Countryview Closing

Blue!

It was the DEMOLITION DERBY – and curlers came out in appropriate attire. There were hard hats, tool belts, and even a little dynamite on the ice. Facing off for the last time in our old club, Blue conquered the Red to win back the title! The Blue teams led going into Saturday’s contest by a margin of only 4 points, and after the second round, Red was ahead by 8, but Blue rallied in the end, and took control of the final round, and the WIN.

Off the ice, Friday night there was music by DJs Matt Hammond & Kyle Gallagher www.charlottetownrefinery.ca .mailto:recording@charlottetownrefinery.ca

A big Thank You goes out to Confederation Cove www.confederationcove.com, and two local mussel farmers (Karen and Paul MacInnis from Hampshire) who donated the mussels for the evening. The mussels were delicious, so be sure to check out their products for your next get-together.

Saturday activities included some off-ice games, burgers on the barbie with salads, and prizes all afternoon for the reverse draw for a 1-night membership for next year. Following the last round of curling, a fantastic meal consisting of roast pork loin, home made baked beans, mashed potatoes, salds, rolls, and dessert was enjoyed by everyone.

The draw for the TV was made during supper, with Clubmate Cindy Nicholson taking home the TV, second prize (Balance Plus broom) went to Debby Sigsworth. The reverse draw also came to a close, with Sherri Boutilier as the winner of a one-night membership for next year.

Many thanks once again to our wonderful sponsors – CountryView Golf Club www.countryviewgolf.com who have partnered with the curling club for over 10 years in the closing spiel, as well as the annual golf tournament which will be held at their beautiful course on June 18th. The Curries were well represented this year, with a couple of them taking home the hardware! Thanks to everyone who helped out in any way to make the weekend a success. It was a great ending to a very good year at the club, and we look forward to coming back in the fall to a newly renovated space, which can only make our curling experience better.

Lorianne Davies rink wins The Dominion!

The Donald Clarey rink from Montague and the Lorianne Davies foursome from the Cornwall Curling Club will get to play in the third annual national The Dominion Curling Club Championship, November 21-26 in Richmond BC, after winning the finals of the PEI championship this evening at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton. Clarey was the defending PEI men’s champions, while Davies was last year’s women’s runner-up. Larry Richards is playing third on the Clarey rink again this year, but there are two new players on front end – David Rice and Stephen MacLeod. The Davies rink is unchanged from last year, with Melody Beck at third, Tracy MacDonald at second stone, and Lynda Turnbull in the lead position. The Davies team’s home club was a co-host of the second annual national championship, held in November 2010.

Clarey edged the Barry Cameron rink from the Silver Fox 8-7 in the men’s final. He was leading 6-3 after six ends, but Cameron, and his team of Corey Montgomery, Roland Richard, and Jim Arsenault, pulled ahead with a four point seventh end. Clarey came back with a deuce in the final end for the win.

Davies’ game was not a close one. They scored a deuce with hammer in the opening end, and stole a single in the second. Their opposition, the Marie Ford rink from the Crapaud Community Curling Club, got on the board with a single point in the third end, but the Davies rink brought the game to an early conclusion with four points in the fourth, and a stolen deuce in the fifth. Final score: 9-1 Davies. Other members of the runner-up Ford team are Julie Mutch, Vivian Holm, and Heather MacRae.

Teams from all seven PEI curling clubs took part in the men’s event, while five clubs sent entries for the women’s division. Cameron finished atop the men’s round robin standings, with a a 5-1 win-loss record, to advance directly to today’s final. The Clarey rink, along with the Alan Inman foursome from Crapaud were next, at 4-2, and played off in the Sunday afternoon semi-finals between the second and third place teams, with Clarey scoring four points in the eighth end for a 9-5 win. Blaine Hutt from the host club, and Cornwall’s Brock Spence rink ended play at 3-3, while Clair Sweet of the Maple Leaf club in O’Leary, and Charlie Wilkinson from Charlottetown had one win and five losses.

Davies, and Kim Ellsworth of the host Western club, both had 3-1 records following women’s round robin play, but Davies edged the host club rink 8-7 in their round robin encounter, and was awarded first place and a bye to the final. Ellsworth lost 10-2 in the semi-final t0 Ford rink, who went 2-2 in the round robin. Nola Murphy of the Silver Fox, and Val MacLean of Charlottetown ended play at 1-3.

Club champions from all PEI curling clubs are invited to this annual event, which is designed to give regular club curlers across the country an opportunity to compete in provincial and national level competitions. Any profit generated from provincial or national Dominion Curling Club Championship events will be directed to charities including the Canadian Paraplegic Association, as well as developmental curling initiatives in communities across Canada.

The Charlottetown rink of Christopher Gallant, Emily Keen, Andrew Cameron, and Emma Matheson, with coaches Derrick Cameron and Peter Gallant edged the Tyler Smith foursome from the Charlottetown, Maple Leaf, and Silver Fox clubs by an 8-7 score to capture the PEI Junior Mixed championship, for curlers age 20 and Under, this afternoon at the Cornwall Curling Club. The 15 and Under division was not held this year due to insufficient numbers. Other members of the runner-up Smith rink are Jenny McLean, Eric Pidgeon, and Emily Gray, with coach Peter Pidgeon.

The Smith team got by the Cody Dixon rink from the Montague Curling Club, also by an 8-7 score, in the semi-final, earlier this afternoon, to advance to the final game against the Gallant foursome.

The eight teams in the event played a round robin, with two four-team pools. Gallant, Smith, and Shawn Pitre and his host Cornwall team were tied at 2-1 after round robin play in the A pool. Gallant was awarded first place through draw to the button results, while Pitre and Smith played off in a tiebreaker for second place, with Smith coming from behind to score a triple in the seventh end and win 5-4. In the B pool, both Dixon, and Marshall Smallman and his Cornwall/Maple Leaf rink, finished round robin play with 2-1 records. Dixon was awarded first place by virtue of his 7-2 victory over Smallman in the round robin.

The teams then played a modifed Page playoff format, with Gallant scoring a four-ender and a triple in a 10-2 win over Dixon in the match between the two first place teams, and Smith stealing a triple in the seventh in another come-from behind win, 7-6 over Smallman.

Gallant, the winner of the 1st place vs 1st place Page game, advanced directly to the final, while Dixon and Smith played off in the semi, with the loser eliminated and the winner advancing to the championship game.

The other teams in the event were the Carolyn Rose rink from Cornwall and Montague, and the Spencer Pitre team from Cornwall and Charlottetown, who both finished with 1-2 win-loss records, and the Matthew MacLean rink from the Cornwall and Maple Leaf clubs who ended play at 0-3.

Ch’ship round set at Junior Mixed, here at Cornwall

It will be the Cody Dixon rink from Montague against the Tyler Smith foursome from the Charlottetown, Silver Fox, and Maple Leaf clubs in this morning’s 11 am semi-final of the PEI Junior Mixed Curling Championships at the Cornwall Curling Club, with the winner facing Charlottetown’s Christopher Gallant team in the final, this afternoon at 3.

The eight teams in the event, for curlers age 20 and under (there were insufficient entries for a 15 and under event this year), played a round robin, with two four-team pools. Christopher Gallant rink undefeated after Junior Mixed Opening Day

The Christopher Gallant rink from the Charlottetown Curling Club are the only unbeaten rink after opening day play at the eight team PEI Junior Mixed Curling Championships, for curlers age 20 and under, being played at the Cornwall Curling Club. Gallant, with teammates Emily Keen, Andrew Cameron, and Emma Matheson, and coaches Derrick Cameron and Peter Gallant, doubled the Tyler Smith rink, which has members from the Charlottetown, Silver Fox, and Maple Leaf clubs, by a 6-3 score in the opening draw, and got by the Matthew MacLean foursome from the Maple Leaf and Cornwall clubs, 5-3 in the evening round. The Gallant squad won the 15 and Under division of this event last year. That division is not being held this year, due to insufficient numbers.

The eight teams in this year’s 20 and Under event are divided into two round robin pools of four teams. Gallant is 2-0 in the A pool, with Smith, and Shawn Pitre and his host club team both 1-1, while MacLean is 0-2. In the B pool, all four teams, skipped by Carolyn Rose (Cornwall/Montague), Spencer Pitre (Charlottetown/Cornwall), Marshall Smallman (Cornwall/Maple Leaf), and Cody Dixon (Montague) are knotted at 1-1.

The round robin wraps up with the 11 am Saturday draw. Tie breakers, if needed, go at 3 pm, and, if required, 7 pm. The Page game between the 1st place team in each pool goes at either 3 or 7 pm, while the Page game between the two second place teams will go at 3 pm Saturday if no tiebreakers, 7 pm if one tiebreaker round, or 8 am Sunday if two tiebreaker rounds are required.

The winner of the Page 1 vs 1 game advances directly to the 3 pm Sunday final, while the 2 vs 2 winner plays the loser of the 1 vs 1 game in the semi-final at 11 am Sunday, with the semi-final winner going to the final.

Games in this event are eight ends.

Attn: Wed. night B Pool curlers

Our opposition can’t make it on March 23, due to March Break commitments. We would like to play, and  are wondering if there are any other B Pool teams in the same boat, who have no game on the 23rd due to another team not being able to make it. If so, please get in touch with us, and we will play against you (I guess we could also play an A pool team in the same situation, but it might be hard to figure out where the points go).

Reception held for Bill Hope rink

Joining the Cornwall Curling Club’s Tuesday night Competitive League, in addition to a league at another club,  has proven advantageous for at least two teams this year. The Suzanne Birt rink from that league won the Scotties Tournament of Hearts provincial women’s title here at our club, while the Bill Hope rink took the Credit Unions of PEI senior men’s honours last month in O’Leary.  A reception for the Hope rink, who open play on Saturday against Nova Scotia’s Scott Saunders rink at the World Financial Group Canadian Seniors in Digby NS was held last night, with Club President Karen Currie on hand to present the team with a cheque to help  with their expenses.

Unfortunately, the two-time defending champion Shirley Berry rink, also from our club, lost in the women’s final this year, and the June Moyaert foursome from Montague are the Island women’s champions. They open against Scott Saunders’ wife, two time world women’s champion Colleen Jones, on Saturday.

Good luck to both PEI teams! Follow the action here:

“Habby” Birthday Ray!

A crowd of Club members, friends, and family were on hand last evening at the Club for a surprise 65th birthday party for Ray Biagé. Ray arrived at the Club from a birthday dinner in a hurry, as he was called there to cleanup a huge “flood”, but when he ran through the door, quickly discovered that there was no flood, just a surprise party! (By the way, his “real” birthdate is today).

Here is a photo of his “Habby Birthday” cake in honour of his beloved Montreal Canadiens.

Final round of Wed. night Ladder League set to go

Things got a little confusing in round two of the Wednesday night ladder league, sponsored by Cornwall Pizza Delight, due to storms, partial storms and the Scotties causing missed draws and some missed games.

It looks like the Karen Currie team, with only one loss, won the A pool, followed closely by the Bob MacWilliams rink, who won all their games, but have one not played, while the Currie rink had one loss (against MacWilliams) but have all games played. The rules state that points are used first and games played but lost receive a point, while games not played do not.

Three teams will drop down to the B pool. The Kelly Watts and Colleen Soltermann teams, newly promoted from the B pool, have only one win each, and will rejoin the B.

The Veronica Smith and Bob Fowler rinks both show three wins, but the scoreboard shows that Smith has one less point, due to one game not played, and, as well, lost to Fowler in their round robin encounter, so the Smith team will also be dropping down to B.

In the B pool, both the John DeLuca and Gord Peters rinks show 5 wins, but DeLuca has one game showing as not played, so the prize for top team in the round will go to Peters. Although DeLuca beat Peters in their round robin encounter, the rules state that we use the points first.

Both of these teams will be going back up the ladder to the A pool for the final round. They’ll be joined by the Joerg Soltermann rink, who had four wins. Also with four wins was the Joe MacKinnon rink, but they are showing a game not played and therefore have less points. MacKinnon did beat Soltermann in their game.

This round is sponsored by Clyde River Golf Links.
Here are the pools for the third and final round, which will run the month of March (5 weeks only).

FrancoFun spiel “un grand succès”!

Approximately 50 French-speaking curlers were at the Cornwall Curling Club on Saturday for the first annual “FrancoFun” spiel, which attracted curlers from around the Island, and even some from Quebec. The tournament started with some instruction for the “débutants”, and, following the official opening, where the teams were piped onto the ice, proceeded with two four end games per team, red teams vs blue. A traditional Acadian meal was served, featuring chicken fricot (stew), mussel stew, rapure (a grated potato pie) with molasses, and apple and raisin pie for dessert.  The day concluded with prizes for the winning red side, other door prizes, and the grand prize of a round trip for two persons and an automobile on the CTMA ferry from Souris to the Magdalen Islands, which was won by Mitch Freeman (Mitch is currently finishing up French language training with the federal government).

Special guest stars at the event included former World Junior curling champion Stefanie (Richard) Clark, who wished all the participants “bon curling” before they went on the ice, and  Quebec curling coach Marc Pelletier.

Berry loses Seniors final to Moyaert

The June Moyaert rink from the Montague Curling Club unseated the two-time defending champion Shirley Berry foursome from the Cornwall and Charlottetown  curling clubs to become the new Credit Unions of PEI provincial women’s curling champions this evening at the Crapaud Community Curling Club. Moyaert, and her team of third Sherren Morrison, second Terri Thompson, and lead Kathy Clarey came out shooting in the sudden death final, following an opening end triple with steals of two, four, and three points to lead 12-0 after four ends. Berry, and her team of Sandy Hope, Shelley Ebbett, and Arleen Harris, with coaches Butch McGee and newly-crowned Senior Men’s champion skip Bill Hope, came back with a deuce and two single steals, but it was handshake time in the eighth end, with a final score of 12-4.

Moyaert, a 1988 provincial women’s champion, who won the B and C sections of the triple knockout competition, both over Berry, while Berry won the A (over Karen Anne MacDonald of Charlottetown) , could have won the championship with a win in either of the two championship round games today, but Berry forced this evening’s game with a  7-3 win this afternoon.

The winning Moyaert rink will join the Senior Men’s champions, the Bill Hope foursome, who went undefeated in their event,  at the World Financial Group Canadian Seniors, March 19-26 in Digby NS. Eight men’s and an equal number of women’s teams took part in this year’s PEI Seniors championships, for curlers age 50 and over.  The men’s event was held at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary.

Cornwall’s Bill Hope rink wins Senior Men’s; Shirley Berry foursome in women’s ch’ship round on Monday

Credit Unions of PEI

The Charlottetown and Cornwall Curling Club rink of Bill Hope, Craig Mackie, John Mullin, and David Murphy swept all three triple-knockout section finals, all against the Bob Matheson rink from the host Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary, to capture the 2011 Credit Unions of PEI provincial men’s curling championships. This afternoon’s C final was a low scoring one, with Hope winning 4-3, and, by sweeping all three sections, eliminating the need for a championship round on Monday. Other members of the runner-up Matheson rink are Muncey Harris, Glen Betts, and Wayne Arsenault. Matheson stepped up to skip the rink when the original skip, Clair Sweet, had to drop out, due to the passing of his wife.

The Hope rink advanced to the C final with a 7-5 win over the Dale Cannon foursome from the Silver Fox, while the Matheson team downed Grant Somers from the Fox 8-2.

The Hope foursome now advance to the World Financial Group Canadian Seniors, March 19-26 in Digby NS. Eight teams took part in the PEI Seniors Championship.

Meanwhile, the Credit Unions of PEI provincial women’s championship at the Crapaud Community Curling Club  is down to the championship round, scheduled for 1 and 6 pm on Monday. The June Moyaert foursome from the Montague Curling Club has won both the B and C sections of the eight team triple knockout event, and will win the championship if they take either game, while A section winner and two-time defending champion Shirley Berry and her combined Cornwall and Charlottetown curling club rink would have to win both matches. Playing with Moyaert are Sherren MacKinnon, Terri Thompson, and Kathy Clarey. Rounding out the Berry foursome are Sandy Hope, Shelley Ebbett, and Arleen Harris.

Moyaert won this afternoon’s C final against Berry in convincing fashion, following a first end single with a stolen triple and a single in the next two ends, and a triple in the fifth. Berry’s two single points were in the fourth and sixth ends.  A Moyaert double in the seventh brought the game to an early conclusion with a 10-2 final score.

Berry edged Cornwall clubmate Debbie Rhodenhizer 9-8 this morning to advance to the C final. Rhodenhizer got off to a quick start in that game with a four point first end, but Berry recovered quickly, to lead 6-4 at the half. Moyaert was trailing Summerside’s Nola Murphy 6-4 after seven ends in her C semi-final this morning, but pulled ahead with five points in the eighth. Murphy came back with one in the ninth and tied the game with a 10th end deuce. Moyaert scored a single point with hammer in the extra end to win 10-9.

The winning rink from Monday’s championship round will advance to the World Financial Group Canadian Seniors, March 19-26 in Digby NS.

Cornwall’s Shirley Berry and Bill Hope rinks win PEI Seniors A finals

Credit Unions of PEI

The Bill Hope and Shirley Berry rinks, who both play out of the Cornwall and the Charlottetown curling clubs, won the A finals of the triple knockout Credit Unions of PEI Provincial  Seniors Curling Championships tonight, with the men’s event being played  at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary, and the women’s  taking place at the Crapaud Community Curling Club. Winning the A final gives them each a berth in the two game championship round on Monday.

In the eight team men’s section, Hope, and his team of Craig Mackie, John Mullin, and David Murphy beat the Grant Somers rink of Summerside by a 7-3 score this afternoon in the A semi-final, and went on to double the Bob Matheson rink from the host club 6-3 in the A final. Matheson advanced with an 9-5 win over Rod MacDonald, and his defending champion rink (three out of the four players are back, with Tom Fetterly replacing Peter MacDonald, and Rod moving up to skip) from the Charlottetown and Silver Fox clubs in the A semi-final.

Defending women’s champion Shirley Berry and her rink of Sandy Hope, Shelley Ebbett, and Arleen Harris got off to a good start in their afternoon game against June Moyaert and her Montague team, taking five points in the first end, but Moyaert took singles in the next three ends and fought her way back to tie the game in the ninth end. Berry had hammer coming home, and scored a single point for a 10-9 win. In the A final this evening, Berry trailed 6-4 after seven ends, but took a triple in the eighth and stole a single in the ninth to pull ahead and win 8-6 over Karen Anne MacDonald and her Charlottetown Curling Club rink. MacDonald got by Cornwall’s Debbie Rhodenhizer rink by a 10-8 score in the afternoon A semi.

In other men’s games this evening, Dale Cannon beat Silver Fox clubmate Grant Somers 8-2, while Rod MacDonald downed Mel Bernard of Summerside 9-5. Matheson takes on Cannon and Hope plays MacDonald Saturday morning at 11, with the winners advancing to the B section final at 4 pm. Facing elimination with their next loss are four Silver Fox rinks, skipped by John Holmes, Bernard, Barry Cameron and Somers.

In other games this evening in the eight team women’s section,  Nola Murphy of Summerside took a triple in an extra end to beat Cornwall’s Rhodenhizer 10-7, and Montague’s Moyaert beat Cornwall’s Currie in a 13-7 shootout.  MacDonald and Moyaert, and Berry and Murphy play off at 11 am on Saturday, with the winners advancing to the 4 pm B finals. Sheila Compton of Summerside plays Rhodenhizer and Summerside’s  Paula Baglole plays Currie Saturday morning, with the losers knocked out of further competition, and the winners continuing play in the C division.

Sunday draws are also at 11 am and four pm, with the winners of all three sections advancing to the two game championship rounds on Monday at 1 and 6 pm. The men’s and women’s winners will advance to the World Financial Group Canadian Seniors, March 19-26 in Digby NS.

Other members of the runner-up Taylor team are Alex Sutherland, Alex Jenkins, and Jonathan Schut, with coaches Alan (AJ) Campbell and Bryan Sutherland.

PEI’s Canada Games women’s team of Amanda MacLean, Kassinda Bulger, Emily Gray, and Aleya Quilty, with coaches Glen MacLean and Shelley Gray, from the host Maple Leaf Curling Club, who had already won the A and B sections, beat Cornwall’s Veronica Smith team this morning by a 10-3 score, aided by a 5 point fourth end, to capture the C final, and become the Sylvan Learning 17 and Under women’s champions, without the need to play the two game championship round. As for the playoff format to finish out the remaining three weeks (provided we have no storm dates), we have in the past divided into pools.  Because there are 18 teams there will be byes.  Before I go ahead and make the pools, I would like to know if there are any teams not available to field teams for the period of March 15, 22, and 29th.  And also, if anyone had a good suggestion as to how to finish the three weeks, I am open to options.  If you could respond by February 22, it would be much appreciated.  Email karen@countryviewgolf.com  or phone 675-2563.  Thanks,

Taylor team forces sudden death final; Smith squad loses to MacLean rink

Cornwall’s Jeffrey Taylor rink, which includes Alex Sutherland, Alex Jenkins, and Jonathan Schut defeated the Alex Matters rink by a 4-1 score this afternoon, to force a sudden death game later this afternoon in the men’s section of the Sylvan Learning 17 and Under curling championships at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary.  As the Matters team, from the Charlottetown Curling Club, won two of the three triple knockout sections in the event, a win would have given them the title, but it now comes down to a sudden death game for the championship. Other members of the Matters rink are  Chris Gallant, Kyle Holland, and Andrew Cameron.

PEI’s Canada Games women’s team of Amanda MacLean, Kassinda Bulger, Emily Gray, and Aleya Quilty, from the host Maple Leaf Curling Club, who had already won the A and B sections, beat Cornwall’s Veronica Smith team this morning by a 10-3 score, aided by a 5 point fourth end, to capture the C final, and become the Sylvan Learning 17 and Under women’s champions, without the need to play the two game championship round.

The men’s and women’s 17 and Under champions will advance to the Sylvan Learning Atlantic 17 and Under. April 15-17 at the Charlottetown Curling Club. As PEI is hosting this year, it is expected that the runners-up will also be invited, as the host team.

Smith to play in C final, Taylor has won B at 17 and Under (Journal)

(by Eric McCarthy)

O’LEARY – Teams skipped by a brother and sister duo from the host Maple Leaf Curling Club will play in the C section finals of the Sylvan Learning provincial 17-and-under curling championships today at 9 a.m.

Amanda MacLean, this year’s P.E.I. Canada Games female curling team, can win the title with a win this morning over the Veronica Smith rink from Cornwall. She and her team of Kassinda Bulger, Emily Gray and Aleya Quilty already won the A and B finals of the triple-knockout championship. Smith was her opponent both times.

A snowstorm delayed the start of Sunday’s action until 5 p.m. Both C finals were originally scheduled for 5 p.m. Sunday, which was to have been the third draw of the day. Only two were held.

In games Sunday, Smith advanced to the C final with a 10-2 victory over Charlottetown’s Megan Davies, and MacLean advanced with a 7-6 extra-end victory over Montague’s Carolyn Rose. Rose had scored four in the eighth end to earn extra playing time.

Matthew MacLean and his team of Marshall Smallman, Kevin Gallant and Allan MacLean is the defending provincial 17-and-under champion. They started off this year’s championship with two losses before storming back with a pair of wins.

Sunday, they were 6-5 winners over Cornwall’s Jeffrey Taylor rink. It was Taylor who handed MacLean an extra-end loss in the first draw of the competition.

MacLean plays Alex Matters in today’s C final. Matters got there with a 10-1 victory over Daniel McCarthy’s Western/Charlottetown rink.

Matters goes into the C final with only one loss – that coming to Taylor in the B final. He defeated Taylor in the A final.

Taylor, who now has two losses, awaits the winner of this morning’s MacLean/Matters game. A MacLean win would put himself, Matters and Taylor into a two-game championship round.

If Matters emerges the victor this morning, MacLean would be out and Matters would face Taylor in the championship round, and would have to be beaten twice to be denied the provincial title.
