Coaching Super Series Session 1 with Craig Savill a-“peeling” success!

What. An. AWESOME. Day.

There are not many words to describe what a fantastic afternoon it was here at 29 Cornwall Road as we hosted the first session of our 2022 Coaching Super Series!!

Thirty young curlers participated in a “quick session “ lesson with two-time World Champion, two-time Brier Champion, and two-time World Junior Champion…Mr.Craig Savill!!

This group primarily consisted of our “Junior Practice” curlers, but included some Novice curlers (from the advanced group), and we also welcomed Junior curlers from our neighbouring clubs to join us!

These Coaching Super Series quick sessions are intended to provide a ‘bite’ of information and instruction for young curlers to work on during practice sessions to improve their games…but also to provide a little extra late-season education to continue to promote enthusiasm and love for the game!

Mr. Savill could not have been more compelling or engaged … and we are so grateful!
Craig’s session was all about the “Peel” and focused on “throwing the big weight accurately like the pros”!

Craig started the session with a mini-lecture on the main components of a good peel… he wants these young curlers to learn to throw it hard!

Craig referenced that many of those elite curlers who throw hard, including curlers like Rachel Homan and Emma Miskew, along with Mark Nichols and Kevin Koe, are able to make double and triple takeouts.

The group of young curlers then participated in some off-ice drills before heading into the ice! There were lots of smiles and curlers cheered each other on!

We were thrilled to have these curlers join us … and the ice shed was buzzing with young athletes~ with varying playing abilities and experience who were here to learn some new techniques and tips!

It was a whole curling ‘grow the game’ vibe.

Some of our talented club coaches participated and helped run the sheets…and another talented elite Curling Coach, Mr. Peter Gallant, was also on-site as he was providing a coaching session with one of our Junior teams following the clinic…

All curlers were welcomed with a lovely cup of hot chocolate sponsored by our friends at Anne of Green Gables Chocolates from COWS when they arrived for the ‘meet and greet’, and left with a fantastic fact sheet hand out prepared by Mr.Savill!

As a lead for many years Craig noted how many of his peers in the curling world have given him friendly jabs and teased him for a clinic on peels… given he was a lead for many years….! But we all know that Craig is an incredible instructor and he knows his game…and his disposition was passionate and articulate!

It was a great way to kick off the Coaching Super Series and we cannot wait until next Wednesday when one of the best elite sweepers on tour, PEI’s own Meaghan Hughes joins us for session two of the Super Series on “Sweeping”!

Thank you to our Junior Coordinator, Sarah Doak, for her time in organizing these awesome clinics…and her work with our special invited instructors to continue to …. #growthegame right here at the Cornwall Curling Club!
