The Cornwall Curling Club: Home of World Champion Lauren Lenentine!!

Wednesday was an INCREDIBLY exciting and emotional day here at 29 Cornwall Road-the Cornwall Civic Centre….the Cornwall Curling Club!!!

Our club, along with our partners in recreation the Town of Cornwall PEI, were so pleased to declare that we are…

“The Cornwall Curling Club~ Home of World Champion Lauren Lenentine’!!

While our club and the Town of Cornwall had hoped for a grand celebration that would welcome the entire community, and our membership, to celebrate this wonderful and special occasion… we were unable to do so during these unusual times.

Many …many….were missed, but given this project has been on hold since Lauren and Team Canada won the World Junior Championships in Russia in 2020, we felt it was time to celebrate as Lauren represents our club and our province on Manitoba’s Provincial Champions Team Zacharias as they prepare for the 2022 Scotties Tournament of Hearts!!

Lauren was incredibly touched as her special plaque was presented, and she offered her gratitude to so many people…it would be a challenge to note everyone here….but during an especially emotional moment, she noted how kind and generous the club and club members have been to her over the years, and it has helped to nurture the confidence and belief in herself and her dreams. And that she appreciates it so much …

Lauren noted that her love of curling was supported at her home club by the Junior Programming, and appreciated coaches and mentors that provided instruction and such enthusiasm. She thanked her amazing coaches over the years, particularly the very talented and incredible coach Mr. Pat Quilty. Lauren shared her love for the club and made special mention of former Club Manager Beverly McCormick and the entire membership, who always provide a welcoming space for Lauren so she could get on the ice and practice the game she loved! Lauren curled on ice created by Cornwall’s former Ice Maker Lance Lowther and she noted great reflections of practicing for many hours on the ice.

Lauren extended a heartfelt thank you to the Town of Cornwall for their partnership and commitment to curling as a part of the wonderful recreation programs in Cornwall. Lauren also noted that there have been many many talented curlers who have curled at the club and continue to curl at the club. She has been honoured to have some really talented and cherished teammates, and many exceptional mentors and former Champions in PEI. Lauren really took an extra pause and moment to acknowledge that our province has so many talented curlers, and she is honoured to be among them.

Lenentine family

Lauren’s family joined us of course, including Lauren’s Mom and Dad, Jennifer and Robbie Lenentine…Along with Lauren’s sister Ella (who is a talented and dedicated volunteer at the club!), Lauren’s grandparents, Club Members Hazen Lenentine and his wife Ann.
Hazen shared a special toast and raised a glass to both of his granddaughters Lauren and Ella~  sharing how proud he is of these young curlers. Hazen also thanked his fellow members for their support of Lauren and Ella, and for their camaraderie.

Also present was Lauren’s very special Auntie Barb….And it is, without doubt, we felt the presence of Lauren’s very cherished grandparents, the late Carolyn and Jim Molyneaux. Carolyn and Jim were a wonderful part of the community of Cornwall and of the Club. They were incredibly proud of their grandchildren.

Cory Stevenson

The Town of Cornwall was enthusiastically represented by Deputy Mayor Cory Stevenson and Counsellor Judy Herlihy. Deputy Mayor Stevenson congratulated Lauren, on behalf of the Town to Cornwall and the community,  on her exceptional accomplishments. He noted how proud the growing and thriving community is to be a part in such a successful club, and how proud the Town of Cornwall is of all of the recreation opportunities the town is able to offer~ thanks to special community spirit and wonderful employees and staff.

Chris

Past-President of the Cornwall Curling Club and Project Co-Chair, Chris MacDougall acted as a Master of Ceremony, while Club President Shauna McGill and Club Vice President Debbie Rhodenhizer also were in attendance.

Shauna

Shauna extended a big congratulations to Lauren on behalf of the membership and noted how proud we all are of Lauren. Shauna noted the history, special spirit, and club culture at the Cornwall Curling Club and how Lauren’s accomplishments are a wonderful part of that community culture.

The Cornwall Curling Club has always offered a club environment that is second to none. It is warm and welcoming and we offer such diversity in our programming. This is credit is to the deep history and commitment of many over the years….from those who have founded the club, such as Club Member (and Molyneaux and Lenentine family cherished friend) Mr. Roy Coffin, and all of those who have given their time and heart in providing a place where everyone can enjoy the benefits of recreation and community….

And some of those….
 can even pursue their dreams…

Congratulations Lauren on being a World Champion!!  We are cheering you on at the 2022 Scotties Tournament of Hearts!!

We are so honoured to be the HOME CLUB of World Champion ~ Lauren Lenentine !!
